When you line up the number of tuning firms who specialize on BMWs, you’ll inevitably come across Alpina, which technically started as an aftermarket company before turning into a manufacturer of its own after years of close ties with BMW. In fact, Alpina and BMW have become partners of sorts since most of the former’s models are integrated into the latter’s production lines, including the Alpina B7, which rolls from the same facility as the BMW 7 Series. That’s how far this relationship has come, and the German Ministry of Transport even recognizes it as such, designating Alpina as an automaker instead of an aftermarket specialist.

History lesson aside, Alpina is headed to the 2017 Geneva Motor Show with a number of its latest creations, one of which is the B4 S Biturbo, an interpretation of the 4 Series according to the specifications of Alpina. Like most models to come out of Alpina, the B4 S Biturbo is technically a 4 Series, and the process by which Alpina uses to create the car isn’t too different from what expert BMW tuners like AC Schnitzer do. So while it is technically an automaker, Alpina’s methods are still closer to AC Schnitzer than it is to BMW, hence the approach we’ve taken here.

The car itself is what you’d come to expect from Alpina. Like the B7 before it, the B4 S Biturbo is loaded with upgrades on all sections of the car, right down to the aerodynamic body kit and the engine upgrade that puts the B4 S Turbo’s power right up there with the BMW M4.

All told, the B4 S Biturbo is a car that’s worth our attention, not only because it’s an Alpina-badged model that’s based on the BMW 4 Series, but more importantly, because it checks off a lot of boxes on what we’d like to see the aftermarket world do to the 4 Series in the first place.

Continue after the jump to read more about the Alpina B4 S Biturbo.

Chestnut Bronze Alpina B7-0

What you are looking at here might appear a disturbingly brown 7 Series Bimmer to an uninterested eye, but an aficionado will be quick to realize this thing is quite possibly the rarest, coolest, most richly adorned car luxury saloon in the world. This is a fully-loaded Alpina B7 bi-turbo in Chestnut Bronze complete with BMW Individual options.

This car is the only Alpina B7 in this configuration, and yes, like any other one-off BMW it is a resident of the Abu Dhabi showroom. The exclusive paint job on this bad boy is complemented not just with the Alpina’s subtle body kit, but also with the tuner’s classic wheels and graphics in gold which is a nice complement for the color. The car also has a matching interior loaded with every conceivable creature comfort and connectivity and entertainment equipment. This thing really is a brown palace on wheels.

As for the technical stuff, the BMW Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo ALLRAD 038, to give its full name, boasts a 608 horsepower 4.4 liter 8-cylinder engine with twin-turbo charging, gasoline direct injection and Valvetronic. With the help of the all-wheel-drive the car accelerates in just 3.6 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and can reach a top speed of up to 193 mph. But the B7 is not just about speed and acceleration but also exquisite comfort, thanks mainly to the 2-axle air suspension system combined with Dynamic Damper Control and Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview.

PostHeaderIcon Alpina B5

BMW just released the new, seventh-generation 5 Series, a.k.a. the G30, and with its arrival comes the expectation of a new Alpina B5. Essentially a BMW-approved tuner-special variant of the stock Bavarian mid-size luxury sedan, the new B5 is a viable alternative to the inevitable M-badged 5 Series, offering sleek, subtle styling enhancements, a classy, uber-comfortable cabin packed with technology, and a heady dose of turbocharged adrenaline under the hood.

It’s an intoxicating combination if you want more excitement from the 5 Series, but don’t want to go with the standard issue M5, or a hodgepodge of parts thrown together by any old speed shop. Alpina stands apart as a badge laden with OEM quality and high-end performance, and for the past 50 years or so, the company has been putting together race cars and street cars that take BMW’s best to new heights.

Unfortunately, it’s rare to find Alpina’s offerings here in the states, which makes the recently spied B5 test mule pictured here a forbidden fruit. Regardless, spotting the new B5 in its native habitat incites a little speculation on our part. Read on for our predictions as to what it’ll offer.

PostHeaderIcon Alpina B5 Touring

It wasn’t all that long ago that we heard rumors about a BMW M5 Wagon being in the works, but so far we have yet to see an official example. But, not all is lost, as sneaky cameramen have managed to catch what we believe to be the Alpina B5 Touring putting in some beautiful work on the Nürburgring. For now, the Audi RS6 Avant and the AMG E63 Wagon have been dominating this specific segment, but this B5 Touring mule tells us that an M5 Touring is certainly on its way. For those of you who haven’t been keeping track, BMW hasn’t had an M5 Touring since the E61 Touring that was produced from 2007 to 2010, and even then it never made it to the U.S.

According to our camera crew, the B5 Touring you see here was actually making some rather quick laps on the ‘Ring, but that doesn’t mean it will get to us any quicker. It would be blasphemy for Alpina to drop the B5 Touring before the BMW-branded M5 hit the streets. The M5 should be revealed around this time next year, so you can expect the Alpina B5 and D5 – it’s diesel-drinking, torque-producing cousin – to be officially revealed sometime after that.

So, with that said, let’s take a good look at the spy shots we have here today and talk a little more about the Alpina B5 Touring.

BMW Alpina B7-0

Much to the delight of BMW M fans who never got an M7, Alpina revealed their own high-performance 7 Series variant in form of the 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive. The car is sort of an all-in-one luxury performance saloon with a lot of style and a huge turn of speed.

The heart of BMW Alpina B7 is the familiar 4.4 liter 8-cylinder bi-turbo engine used in BMW M products, tuned by Alpina to 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. It gives the car a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 193 mph which is one the par with most serious super sedans in the market. Among the highlights of the engine there are Alpina air intake system, indirect intercooler system, NGK spark plugs, and stainless steel Alpina sport exhaust system.

BMW Alpina B7 xDrive is also a work of art in terms of dynamics. A lot of work has gone into retuning the 7 Series chassis and suspension for top handling. The package features four-wheel-drive, 2-axle air suspension, Dynamic Damper Control and Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview, Active Roll Stabilization  Integral Active Steering system, and Electronic Damper Control. The car also comes with 20-spoke ALPINA CLASSIC and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires as well as blue painted 4-piston fixed calipers on the front axle.

But regardless of all the technical stuff, the main reason for buying the BMW Alpina B7 is the way it looks. The car features all the lovely, yummy Alpina design features we all know and love, and they all fit the 7er really well. You get a subtle aero kit, Alpina wheels and stripes, two elliptical twin tailpipes, and exclusive Alpina colors including metallic blue and green. The same goes for the classically beautiful interior where you find Nappa leather and ceramic inserts.

In the world of performance, sport, and luxury, cars are always changing, with facelifts, redesigns, and new models debuting all the time. Today, it’s the all new, 2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive – the third generation Alpina based off of the BMW 7 Series. As with all Alpina models, it brings things like luxury, performance, and comfort together in one package.

The new B7 adds to the good looks of the 7 Series with more aerodynamic qualities in the front and rear and brings a new generation, 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that is sure to pack plenty of horsepower and torque. In addition to those goodies, add in the all-wheel drive system, adjustable suspension, and numerous driving modes, and you have luxurious performance at its finest. That’s what is so great about Alpina. It takes all the good from standard BMW models, and in turn, makes the car that much better. Who can really argue with that?

The new Alpina B7 xDrive is scheduled to hit dealerships in September of this year, but BMW of North America has already released detailed information and a plethora of pictures to go along with it. So, now that the beans have been spilled, let’s dive in and take a look at the new Alpina xDrive.

Updated 03/22/2016: BMW announced that the all-new Alpina B7 xDrive will be making its North American debut at the 2016 New York Auto Show and will arrive in U.S. showrooms in September 2016. Prices will be announced at a later date.

PostHeaderIcon BMW Alpina B7 Officially Teased

alpina-b7

If you are one of those who people who are at BMW for not making an M7, you can now rest a tad easier as they are going to soon unveil a car that is practically an M7, but is called the new Alpina B7. They have released a teaser video introducing the forthcoming arrival.

As is often the case with these teaser, details are very scarce. But those with a trained eye for Alpina products will be quick to spot the chunky front spoiler lip, distinctive LED lights, and other aero parts exclusive to these cars. We can’t say for sure Alpina B7 will be a looker, but it will certainly look incredibly cool. All Alpinas do.

As for the powertrain, again, official details are not available at this moment. But it doesn’t take a genius to tell Alpina B7 will get a tuned version of BMW’s 4.4 liter bi-turbo V8 engine. They are not going to put a straight-six in this huge car, and a V12 is also out of the question on account of it not making much sense in a sports sedan. If we were to has it a guess what kind of horsepower that engine will produce in the B7, we’d say about the same as an M5, which is 560 hp.

Until BMW musters up the courage to introduce the M7, enthusiasts will have to keep looking to Alpina if they want a sporty version of the 7 Series. In the case of the new 2016 BMW 7 Series, it doesn’t look like they’ll have to wait very long. New spy shots seem to show BMW testing the 2016 Alpina B7, and while details are non-existent, it’s a welcome sign that this sport-tuned version is being tested so soon after the sixth-gen 7 Series was released just last month.

Like the U.S.-bound 2016 7 Series, this B7 was spotted in the long-wheelbase configuration, and it would seem that this powerful offering could be ready soon after this fall’s launch of the standard 7 Series lineup. From the rumors that are starting to swirl about this latest Alpina-tuned BMW, this is going to be one impressive way to mark 50 years of Alpina performance cars.

PostHeaderIcon Alpina B6 Bi-Turbo Edition 50

Half a century ago, Alpina was founded in the German city of Kaufbeuren. Originally a producer of typewriters, the company transitioned into the infinitely more interesting business of making fast BMWs, tweaking carburetors and cylinder heads instead of stringing ink ribbons. In the years that followed, Alpina would produce more than a few successful race cars, eventually moving on to concentrate primarily on street cars in the late ’80s.

To help celebrate its long history of hotrod Bimmers, Alpina has introduced the B6 Bi-Turbo Edition 50. Based on the BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible, Alpina laid its hands on just about every aspect of the stock car, with upgrades applied to the exterior styling, interior equipment, and of course, all those mechanical bits under the skin.

Only 50 examples will be built. As a showcase of Alpina’s tuning prowess, the B6 Edition 50 is sure to provide more than a few incentives for those looking for a Bavarian rocket ship that still comes with an original factory warranty.

Imagine James Bond had a long-lost brother. The two started out with the same genes, had many of the same habits — but instead of a devil-may-care ladies’ man and secret agent, Brother Bond got his kicks playing the stock market and taking his socialite wife to drink wine at dinner parties. That’s Alpina. It’s M Sport’s more civilized brother. But don’t let the day job fool you — beneath Alpina’s respectable business jacket hides a weapon to make 007 swoon.

Like Mr. Bond, the Alpina B5 Edition 50 started out with pretty good DNA, in the form of a 550i sedan chassis. At the BMW factory, they install an engine built by Alpina, and then ship the car back to them to install the finishing touches. The result is a car built equally by both manufacturers, but wears the Alpina badge. That badge lays atop a car wholly distinct from its sibling in terms of character — but don’t take that to mean there isn’t some deadly rivalry involved.

These are the Bond twins we’re talking about here.

PostHeaderIcon Alpina B6 3.5

Back in the 1980s, the German luxury car scene was still taking shape, and M and AMG hadn’t quite gained their footing with retail customers yet. That said, BMW tuner extraordinaire, Alpina, which is actually registered as an official automaker in Germany, was in full swing modifying Bimmers and selling them under its own nameplate. One said machine was the 1986 Alpina B6 3.5, which was a BMW 325i body and chassis with a 3.5-liter engine, tons of performance goodies, and suspension system that was great for the era.

With one of these icons of the German performance world for sale on Ebay, I decided to take a look back at the 1986 Alpina B6 3.5 and give you a rundown of just how amazing it was. I also took a look at how it compared to its main rival, the Brabus 190E 3.6.

PostHeaderIcon BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe

German-based car manufacturer Alpina has been making fast Bimmers since the 60s. It takes some of the best that BMW can offer and turns out performance-oriented, tuned-up vehicles laden with go-faster parts and extra luxury. Ctizens of the U.S., however, have had few opportunities for ownership.

It appears as though that’s gradually starting to change. The B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is Alpina’s take on the 6 Series Gran Coupe, BMW’s four-door styled as a two-door. This AWD rocket was first seen on American soil last year at the 2014 New York Auto Show, joining the 7 Series-based B7 for Alpina’s two American offerings.

Designated as an exclusive, special-order, limited-production vehicle, the B6 costs a small fortune, but comes with new features and exterior distinctions, not to mention a healthy amount of extra power.

It’s an alternative to an M car, with everything you’d expect from BMW, plus a little more. But is it worth the price?

PostHeaderIcon BMW Alpina XD3 Bi-Turbo

While the BMW X3 has been around since 2004, Alpina’s version of it, the XD3 Bi-Turbo, has been only been around since 2014. Like all other Alpina models, the XD3 is based on the production Bimmer, but with a handful of exterior and interior updates, and a nice power bump as well. For the 2015 model year, the XD3 inherits all of the styling updates of the 2015 X3.

Some people mistakenly consider Alpina a BMW tuner, when in fact it is its own automaker as recognized by the German Ministry of Transport. Additionally, Alpina and BMW actually work closely with one another, and many of Alpina’s manufacturing processes are built directly into BMW’s production line. How many tuners can you think of who work that closely with a major automaker? I can’t think of a single one.

So, how does the XD3 stack up against the big boys of the luxury SUV world?
