PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG ONE Is the Name for Production Project ONE

Perhaps because ‘Project’ is not a particularly sexy name, Mercedes-AMG decided to drop it from the name of their new hyper car. So the AMG Project ONE is henceforth called simply the Mercedes-AMG ONE. It’s succinct, it’s cool, and it’s memorable.

And it’s also a hint at all the Formula One technologies used in the making of the Mercedes-AMG ONE. The hybrid electric hypercar has a powertrain that closely resembles that of a F1 car. Looks-wise, too, the ONE is about the most dramatic and eye-catching car Mercedes has ever built. It even has a multi-part, two-stage extendable rear wing for Race mode which brings to mind Formula One’s DRS system.

Those lucky enough to be able to afford a Mercedes-AMG ONE get some special treats. AMG has created mobile showrooms with coffee bar, lounge and various information elements, such as touch screen animations, material samples and colour examples. The custom-built trailer with extendable sides also feature the car, obviously, and they get to check it out up close and see all the functions. The 1,000 horsepower beast with its 350+ km/h top speed is set to become the world’s top dog hypercar, though it faces some stiff competition from the likes of McLaren, Bugatti, and Koenigsegg.

“Motorsport is not an end in itself for us. Faced with intense competition, we develop technologies from which our production vehicles also subsequently benefit. We are drawing on our experiences and successes from three constructors’ and drivers’ world championships to bring Formula 1 technology to the road for the first time: in Mercedes-AMG Project ONE”, says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG Project ONE Begins Road Testing

A long while after its motor show debut, the amazing Mercedes-AMG Project ONE finally hits the road as a production prototype. This ultra-dream car comes in very limited numbers and all of them are pre-sold probably. But still, we can’t wait to see it on the road and check it out in action.

We are particularly keen to see how the revolutionary powertrain in this car stacks up against the rivals. Mercedes-AMG Project ONE, as I;m sure you know, boasts a F1 hybrid system. It consists of 1.6-litre V6 hybrid petrol engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging, plus electric motors on the front axle. At 11,000 rpm, the system develops more than 1,000 horsepower. And that gives the Project ONE a top speed of over 350 km/h.

Because it is so innovative and complex, Mercedes-AMG Project ONE presented the engineers with huge challenges. They had to develop a whole new approach with Virtual Engineering for this car. With that phase done, they went to test the whole powertrain including all hybrid components at the race track and on the high-performance dyno tests of HPP’s engine specialists in Brixworth. Now they have fitted the powertrain to the first prototypes and sent them out of the lab for some real world testing.

“The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is the first Formula 1 car with MOT approval. Our highly efficient hybrid assembly stems from motor racing and the electrically powered front axle generates a fascinating mixture of performance and efficiency. With a system output of over 1,000 hp and a top speed beyond 350 km/h this hypercar handles exactly as it looks: it takes your breath away”, Ola Källenius says, Member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

PostHeaderIcon Will Mercedes-AMG Take on the Porsche Cayman with a Stand-Alone Compact Sports Car?

Mercedes-AMG has stepped into something big with the release of the AMG GT. After all, that car has spawned a handful of different models including the most recent GT 4-door Coupe. Now, it looks like Mercedes may have the Porsche Cayman in its sights, and it’ll take it on with a stand-alone small sports car.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG GLS63

Introduced in 2006 as the company’s first full-size SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GL developed from a longer version of the ML into a model of its own with unique features and an AMG version. Just like the ML, which became the GLE, the GL was renamed to GLS in 2016. Part of the brand’s revised nomenclature, the GLS badge signals that this vehicle is the SUV equivalent to the S-Class. On the market since 2012 in its second-generation, the GLS is about to get a big overhaul for the 2019 model year. Alongside the redesigned SUV, Mercedes will also launch a brand-new version of the AMG GLS63. Already spotted on public roads, the performance SUV will arrive sometime in 2019.

While the standard GLS has plenty of competition to go against, including the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Lexus LX, and the Land Rover Range Rover, the AMG version is almost alone on the market. The Range Rover is the only SUV available with a high-performance drivetrain, and it will remain the only option until BMW launches the X7 and its M version. From this standpoint, the AMG GLS63 will remain a unique full-size SUV on the market and will enable Mercedes-Benz to dominate the niche in the high-performance realm. Let’s see what the upcoming AMG GLS63 might have in store for us.

PostHeaderIcon Turns Out, The Mercedes-AMG SL 65 Isn’t The Only Thing We Need To Say Goodbye To as V-12s Are Not Long in Mercedes-AMG’s World

More than a few tears were shed when it was recently reported that Mercedes-AMG is considering killing off the potent SL 65 drop top. Well, prepare for the dam to break because it looks like the SL 65 isn’t the only thing that Mercedes-AMG is planning to get rid off in the near future. A new report, this time from Car and Driver, is shining the spotlight on Mercedes-AMG’s 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged, V-12 engine, and that light, as far as its application on future Mercedes-AMG models, is about to be turned off completely soon.

If you’re looking for classy entry-level luxury with a three-pointed star on the nose, look no further than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Initially making the scene in 2007, the C-Class got its first AMG model variant in 2008. These days, the C-Class is the brand’s top-selling nameplate, with the AMG versions bolstering sales numbers as a more accessible gateway to the high-performance Mercedes lifestyle. Like a sports car draped in a luxury suit, the AMG C 63 brings the heat without breaking a sweat, and now, there’s an updated version headed to dealers offering tweaked exterior style, the latest cabin tech, and a little extra under the hood.

PostHeaderIcon 2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe arrives with 510-hp

It is quite refreshing to see that in this climate of downsizing and hybridization AMG is still holding the fort for the big V8s. The new 2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe they have unveiled at the New York Auto Show packs a 510 horsepower 4.0 liter V8 engine from the AMG GT

And that makes this little coupe one of the most interesting cars to be launched in the course of 2018. A compact two-door coupe with AMG-tuned chassis and suspension and that V8 hanging off the front, the new C63 Coupe is not a car for getting you from A to B. In fact, you’d be sad when you eventually get to B because the driving experience has been too fun. Just like its predecessors the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe drifts and shimmies around like a ballet dancer, giving you an enormous grin and quite possibly an erection in the process!

Besides the hot 2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe there is also a non-S version available with 476 horsepower. But the good news is, all models feature AMG RIDE CONTROL steel suspension with adaptive damping adjustment and electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential as standard, plus the AMG body kit with carbon accents, big wheels, and aero parts as well as super sport interior featuring  optional fully digital cockpit with unmistakable AMG displays and the new generation of AMG steering wheels.

“The AMG C-Class is our best-selling model series and therefore a key cornerstone of our company’s success of recent years. We have therefore increasingly expanded our C-Class offer: customers can now choose between twelve models from the C-Class family. As part of the latest facelift, we have upgraded all variants of the model series even more substantially,” says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “This relates to the 43-series models and especially, of course, to the AMG C 63. The perfected driving dynamics and expressive design underscore the powerful, muscular character of the rear-wheel drive icon.”

PostHeaderIcon Official: 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe

So finally today at the Geneva Motor Show the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe went official, revealing what can be described as a CLS on steroids. The so-called Panamera-killer comes wiht a lineup of six and eight cylinder engines, plwnty of style, and a bad boy attitude most evident in the 63 S version.

That means the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, like any old AMG, comes in a bunch of flavors. The basic AMG GT 53 4-Door is like the Panamera S, boasting a 3.0-liter Inline-6 turbo engine with EQ boost. The innovative engine with additional electric charge-air compressor (eZV) and exhaust air turbocharger develops 492 horsepower. One level above this we have the 4.0 liter V8 with basic tune, meaning it has 577 horsepower. The fomer does o to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and the latter in 3.3 seconds. Top Speed is 174 mpg for the 53 and 193 for the non-S 63.

The AMG GT 4-Door Coupe you want, though, is the 63 S variant which has a full 630 horsepower. This one does 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds and keep accelerating to 195 mph. This one is going to give the Panamera Turbo a good run for its money. 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe also has the most expressive design features and the most track-ready underpinnings and electronics including a RACE button. AMG is boasting a lot about the driving dynamics of the 4-Door. So we hope that doesn’t mean they have compromised on ride comfort. After all, this is a luxury saloon.

Other notable highlights of the 4-Door AMG GT include a performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive with electronically controlled locking differential at the rear axle, active rear axle steering which is standard on the V8 models, speed sensitive steering, active aerodynamics, high performance brakes, and optional aero package.

PostHeaderIcon Official: 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 with 390 Horsepower

Today Mercedes-Benz announced the launch of a diet C63 AMG for those who find the full-fat model a bit much. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43, available in saloon and estate body styles, is the perfect compromise between performance and efficiency, with a 3.0 liter bi-turbo V6 engine.

This engine averages around 9 liters per 100 km which is far from brilliant, until you realize it also makes 390 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque. With a rear-biased AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system supporting the operation of AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, that engine takes the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 sedan from 0 to 100 kmh in 4.7 seconds, and the Estate in 4.8 seconds. Both are limited to 155 mph or 250 km/h.

2019 Mercedes-AMG C43 also has very understated looks with just the right touches of sportiness in the right places. That’s what makes a performance saloon cool: not shouting about its inner strength. You get a pair of sporty bumpers, front and rear spoilers, diffuser, skirts, and quad tailpipes. And that’s about it. Of course, the AMG grille and chrome accents and emblems, along with AMG wheels with five twin spokes painted in tremolite grey are also standard issue.

The interior is also “tricked-out” so to speak, with ARTICO man-made leather / DINAMICA microfibre, optional AMG performance seats, a host of displays showing various information, three-spoke steering, aluminium sports pedals with black studs, and designo individual options. 2019 C43 also benefits form some of Mercedes’ latest technology options, such as ENERGIZING comfort control, COMAND online and AMG TRACK PACE.

PostHeaderIcon Four-Door Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe Leaked Ahead of Geneva Debut

Tomorrow at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show we will get to see the all-new Four-Door Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe in full official glory. But unauthorized early looks are always more fun, so here’s your first glimpse of the new Mercedes gran turismo.

The car is officially called the Four-Door Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe, which is a bit self-contradictory. But in any case, the four-door version of the AMG GT supercar is designed to tap into the market currently dominated by the Porsche Panamera. It is decidedly less dramatic than the concept version we saw at Frankfurt Auto Show last year, but still looks pretty cool for what is essentially a family saloon.

The main characteristics of the Four-Door Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe include an aggressive front apron with large air intakes, chin spoiler and the all-important Panamericana grille, slimmer headlights than the two-door version, muscular bonnet, wider hips, a round rear-end and a fixed rear spoiler which to be honest is a tad unsightly. If you are wondering what is the point of a four-door AMG GT when Mercedes already has the CLS63 AMG, well, how’s more power as a conversation starter? Whereas the most powerful AMG V8 currently churns out just over 600 horsepower, the 4-door AMG Coupe could have as much as 800 horses!

Whether that’s true or just a wild internet rumor, we shall soon find out. Stay tuned for more on this civilized beast over the coming hours…

PostHeaderIcon AMG-Inspired Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE Boat Unveiled

From today the 2018 Miami International Boat Show will see the debut of the Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE, a performance boat inspired by upcoming AMG Project One hypercar. This product marks the 11th year of partnership between AMG and Cigarette Racing with a technological tour de force.

Claiming to a sea-faring equivalent to the AMG Project One, the Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE features a lot of carbon fiber. It features a composite structure consisting of carbon-fiber, Kevlar and E-glass. The deck too is constructed completely of carbon fiber, as is the inner structural laminate of the hull, forward bulkheads, cabin liner, engine hatch, consoles and storage hatches. This is not jut for the sake of sounding cool in the brochure, but also to lower the weight and having a lower center of gravity.

Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE is 51′ 5″ in length and features an increased beam of 9′ 6″. It seats up to 6 passengers in comfort, enabling them to enjoy a top speed of 140 mph. Can’t imagine doing that kind of speed on water should be very comfy, but it sure is very cool and exciting. Powering the 515 is a pair of Mercury Racing 1,350/1,550 QC4v (Quad Cam 4 Valve) engines and M8 stern drives, delivering up to 3,100 hp.

“For 11 years, Cigarette Racing has been our trusted partner that has allowed us to extend our likeminded core performance principles from the land to the water,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes AMG GmbH. “By directly translating Formula 1 technology from the track to the street, the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is our most ambitious and awe- inspiring vehicle yet. It is incredible to see our vision reimagined for the water in such an impressive and highly compelling form.”

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG Debuts 2019 G63 With 577 horsepower!

Mercedes has just unveiled the long-awaited 2019 AMG G63 – the go-fast version of its all-new 2019 G-Class, which is still hot off the auto show stage. Its official name is the Mercedes-AMG G63, and it’s better in every measurable way over the outgoing model. Not only does the G63 benefit from the G-Class’ new appearance, swanky interior, wider stance, and updated suspension system, it also boasts a slew of AMG parts that push this SUV into sports car territory.

A New G-Wagen For a New Age

“Mercedes finally decided to ditch the G’s military-spec underpinnings and revamp its halo SUV”

The previous G-Wagen was extremely impressive, but its 40-year old bones were holding it back. Mercedes finally decided to ditch the G’s military-spec underpinnings and revamp its halo SUV.
Not surprisingly, the G is so much better for it.

Of course, with this being the AMG model, the headlining feature is the engine. Mercedes didn’t disappoint thanks to a hand-built 4.0-liter, biturbo, V-8 making an impressive 577 horsepower and a stump-pulling 627 pound-feet of torque.

Like other AMG engines, the 4.0-liter uses a hot-V design, mounting its twin turbos in the valley between the cylinder heads. The engine uses a reverse-flow intake and exhaust system with clean air coming from the outside of the cylinder heads and exiting into the twin-scroll turbos perched atop the engine. The result is nearly instant boost.

Mercedes-AMG Debuts 2019 G63 With 577 horsepower!
- image 767704
“Despite its weight, the burly SUV will hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and reach 137 mph.”

Power is sent through AMG’s SpeedShift nine-speed automatic transmission and through the G-Class’ new full-time 4WD system with its rear-biased 40/60 torque split. Despite its weight, the burly SUV will hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and reach 137 mph. Pay extra for the AMG Driver’s Package and the top speed is adjusted to 149 mph.

Naturally, the AMG G63 will sound amazing during its acceleration run thanks to AMG-tuned dual exhaust with the variable exhaust flap. Simply press a button on the center console and flaps inside the pipes open to allow more V-8 rumble, blats, and crackles past the mufflers. And in traditional AMG G-Class style, the G63 has dual exhaust tips under the rear doors on each side.

Mercedes made sure to retain the AMG G-Class’ duality, too. Not only is it a horsepower monster, but it will settle down into a relaxing family hauler. Five on-road drive modes change the G63’s character at the push of a button. The modes include Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. That last mode is customizable by the driver to suit his or her wants. They can choose a sporty throttle response with a soft ride and firm steering.

Mercedes-AMG Debuts 2019 G63 With 577 horsepower!

“The body-on-frame SUV boasts 9.5 inches of ground clearance and four-wheel independent suspension with adaptive dampers”

Mercedes didn’t abandon the G-Wagon’s off-road capabilities, either. The body-on-frame SUV boasts 9.5 inches of ground clearance and four-wheel independent suspension with adaptive dampers. And in addition to the five on-road driving modes, Mercedes includes three off-road modes – Sand, Trail, and Rock.

Much of the G-Wagen’s off-road prowess comes from its full-time 4WD system and locking differentials. While the outgoing G-Wagen had a 50/50 torque split, the updated transfer case provides that 40/60 torque split for a rear-drive bias during on-road driving. When it comes to off-roading, the transfer case uses a multi-plate clutch to enter a 50/50 torque split with a 100-percent lockup.

Impressively, Mercedes designed the transfer case to enter its low-range gearing at speeds up to 25 mph. Most 4WD systems require the vehicle be fully stopped with the transmission in neutral. What’s more, the switch from low range back to high range can happen at speeds up to 44 mph. That’s made all the more impressive considering Mercedes lowered the crawl ratio from 2.1:1 to 2.93:1.

“With the center transfer case locked in a 50/50 split, the electromechanically controlled rear differential can be locked”

With the center transfer case locked in a 50/50 split, the electromechanically controlled rear differential can be locked. Doing so provides equal torque distribution between the two rear wheels. In extreme off-road situations where traction is at a minimum, the front differential can be locked. Using the same electromechanically connection, the driver simply presses a button on the dash. At this point, all four wheels spin at the same speed – both front to back and side to side. That means if one wheel loses traction, it will continue to spin at the same speed rather than power being diverted toward the path of least resistance. That’s what happens without differential locks. Unfortunately for those lesser vehicles, it means getting stuck.

Visual Cues

“AMG added a new, more aggressive front grille and bumper, along with flared wheel arches”

Of course, Mercedes-AMG wasn’t about to let the G63’s visual appeal go unchanged. AMG added a new, more aggressive front grille and bumper, along with flared wheel arches. The protective side strips are high-gloss black with a silver AMG emblem. The spare tire gets a stainless steel cover with a 3D Mercedes star. Other badging includes a “V8 BITURBO” emblem on the front fenders and an AMG G63 logo on the rear door.

The trim work around the front air inlets are painted in matte iridium silver and the massive brake calipers are painted red. The G63 comes standard with 21-inch wheels, but 22s can be ordered.

“Mercedes-AMG will bring the 2019 G63 to the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show on March 6”

There’s also an optional appearance package called the AMG Night Package. It adds smoked glass over the exterior lighting and deeply tented windows. Furthermore, the side mirrors are painted in Obsidian Black to contrast the body color. The ring around the spare tire cover and the trim on the bumpers get the same blacked-out look.

Mercedes-AMG will bring the 2019 G63 to the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show on March 6. It will arrive in showrooms closer toward 2019. Pricing has not been announced, and we don’t expect to hear anything until closer to its on-sale date.

As for what the future holds, we also expect Mercedes-AMG to launch an even more powerful AMG G-Class model. We reported on Mercedes trademarking the G73 nameplate, so that’s what we’re expecting. As for the powertrain, we’ve heard rumors of the same 4.0-liter, Biturbo, V-8 but paired with a powerful hybrid electric system for a combined horsepower close to 800.

We’ll keep you up to date here at TopSpeed.com, so stay tuned to more.

PostHeaderIcon Production Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe Set for Geneva Debut

So a year after making its debut as a concept, the four-door Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is coming to Geneva Motor Show, this time in full production trim. Taking on the likes of Porsche Panamera and Maserati Quattroporte, the four-door GT is one of the hottest cars to be launched this year.

Following last year’s debut the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe was dispatched around the world in form of development cars to undergo a number of vigorous tests. IF this GT wishes to beat the Panamera at its own game, it needs to be a quality product. It won’t be enough just looking better and going faster. This class of vehicles has to be an altogether uncompromising specimen, equally at home on Monte Carlo’s streets as it is at Silverstone.

That is a tall order, but if anyone can do it, it’s those mental engineers at AMG. The production Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe should not differ much from the concept design-wise, although some changes would be inevitable. But even if the finished product is toned down a bit, the thing would still be a looker. The EQ Power+ hybrid powertrain will be featured in the four-door GT, but their final specs are yet to be revealed. There is going to be different power outputs and different packages for customization.

“With the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept we are giving a preview of our third completely autonomously developed sports car. And extending the attractive AMG GT family to include a four-door variant. Plus the GT Concept – like the AMG Hypercar, which we are presenting at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt – illustrates how we are defining performance of the future at AMG. Impressive driving dynamics coupled with high efficiency, resulting from an innovative drive system and tailored to the vehicle segment in question – that is Future Performance made by AMG. With our AMG GT Concept that means a combination of an ultramodern V8 petrol engine and a high-performance electric motor. Both intelligently networked and with a modular battery concept with a combination of extremely powerful yet light batteries. This performance hybrid powertrain offers an impressive electric range and the opportunity to generate a system output of up to 600 kW in its last level of development. It covers the sprint from 0-100 in less than three seconds – which corresponds to a super sports car level” says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

PostHeaderIcon AMG Teases Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE Speedboat

The partnership between Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing is legendary. Every time AMG comes up with a new supercar the boat makers release a special model celebrating that car. And so now it is time for a speedboat version of the AMG Project One, and it’s called Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE.

Right now we only have a teaser drawing of this magnificent thing to drool over, but the wait is not going to be long since Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE will be revealed next week at the Miami Boat Show (February 15, 2018). Judging by what we can see, the boat tries to replicate the unique look of the hypercar with a special paint work featuring a silver base and black accents. As the sea-faring equivalent of the Project one, is also going to be fast. Like, really fast. And just like the car, it is going to be the privilege of a select few to enjoy its looks and performance.

Just to recap, the Mercedes AMG Project One hypercar is the ultimate effort at making a Formula One car for the road. It literally uses F1 powertrain technology with a 1.6-litre V6 hybrid petrol engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging that revs up to 11,000 rpm! The unit generates more than 1,000 hp and has a top speed beyond 350 km/h, which are the hypercar norms these days. There will also be two further 120 kW electric motors at the front axle, making the One four-wheel-drive. It remains to be seen if the boat is as much of a techno-feast as the car.

PostHeaderIcon Major Influx of AMG Models Coming Our Way By 2019

Enhanced fuel economy

2017 has been a landmark year for Mercedes-AMG in the US. This year alone, sales of AMG models in America jumped 50 percent to 30,116 models. That impressive spike in sales is largely credited to the success of the new entry-level AMG 43 line, which AMG just finished rolling out this year. Don’t look now, but it appears that Mercedes-AMG isn’t about to slow down on expanding its performance line. On the contrary, Automotive News is reporting that the AMG line will see another big expansion by 2019. This expansion will include, among other models, a new line of AMG 53 models.

“The performance division is preparing a significant number of new models to add to the brand’s growing portfolio.”

Word of Mercedes-AMG’s plans come directly from Tobias Moers, the brand’s head honcho. According to Moers, the performance division is preparing a significant number of new models to add to the brand’s growing portfolio. He didn’t specify the exact number of new models, but he did mention the family of AMG 53 models as being the next-in-line to join the family. First up will be a CLS variant that’s on the calendar for a 2018 release. That will be followed by more versions, including for the E-Class coupe and convertible, as well as the GLE midsize crossover.

In addition, there’s also talk that a four-door AMG GT model is in the pipeline. The model will be based on the AMG GT Concept that we first saw at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and is scheduled to hit the U.S. market sometime in 2019.

“The automaker has also asked select dealerships to invest in dedicated showroom space to accommodate the influx of these new model”

The planned expansion of AMG isn’t just limited to adding more models to the brand. The automaker has also asked select dealerships to invest in dedicated showroom space to accommodate the influx of these new models. Likewise, AMG is also requesting more people to receive training for its AMG performance centers. Since opening in 2015, Mercedes-AMG has around 60 of these centers open to date. The plan, according to a Mercedes spokesperson, is to bring that number up to 90 centers for its U.S. retail network.

“It’s not just about having an AMG performance center,” Dietmar Exler, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, told Automotive News. “It’s also making sure — and many dealers did this already before they opened the center — that there is enough focus and attention on the opportunity that AMG models provide for us in the market.”

All of these plans are part of a bigger goal for Mercedes-AMG. The performance brand is already on the cusp of representing 10 percent of Mercedes USA’s sales volume. With the arrival of these new models and the expansion of these dealer networks, you can be sure that it’s only a matter of time before the AMG line becomes an even bigger force in the U.S. than it already is.

PostHeaderIcon AMG Emblem LED Projector Now Available for Most Mercs

AMG fans always mock those in the BMW M camp for their love of silly accessories and show-offy garnish M cars are famous for. That’s something they cannot do anymore, thanks to this new AMG Emblem LED Projector. If you think this features is cool, you need to take a long look at your life choices.

We’re sorry, maybe we should explain what AMG Emblem LED Projector is before dissing it. It’s a projector in the bottom of the doors that shines a 3D AMG emblem on the floor when you open them. There probably isn’t a more surefire way to announce publicly you are a complete and utter dork, most likely with a comic book fixation and superhero underwear. It appears Mercedes-Benz sponsorship of the Justice League movie has affected them deeply.

Features like AMG Emblem LED Projector are not natural for a Mercedes-Benz, much less for an AMG. And they wouldn’t have come up with it had it not been for the success of the Illuminated Mercedes Star, another embarrassingly vulgar feature which actually appealed to a lot of their younger customers. So, you know, if there is money to be made, MB is willing to put on a geeky face for a while. They are offering the emblem projector for most production models know, from A to GLS class, and it’s an easy upgrade to do as well. They just replace the factory-installed entrance lighting at the bottom of the front doors.

So yes, it can get more embarrassing. As bad as this thing is on a real AMG, it’s hilariously terrible to have it on an A-Class diesel.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition

With almost 40 years of history now in the books, it’s time for the Merc G-Wagen to get a substantial update. But before that happens (the new-gen is expected to show at the Detroit Motor Show next year), the German automaker is releasing a new, glossier, limited production run dubbed the G 65 Final Edition. Bearing the same AMG-branded bones as the standard G 65, the Final Edition adds a host of aesthetic enhancements to help it stand out from the crowd. Outside, you’ll find large wheels, specialized trim pieces, and black and bronze coloring, while the interior comes decked out in nappa leather, carbon fiber, and unique badging, all set in the traditional top-shelf G-Wagen luxury.

Merc says over a third of its G-Class vehicle sales are the AMG variants, so it makes total sense to release this spruced-up special edition before we wave goodbye. With only 65 units slated for production, Mercedes is banking on exclusivity to move this thing, because they certainly won’t come cheap. Pricing starts at a whopping 310,233 Euros, which is around $368,000 at current exchange rates (10/19/2017). And in case you’re keeping track, that’s about $150,000 more than the standard AMG G 65. Seriously. So what the hell makes it worth all that extra outlay? Read on for the details.

What Makes The Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition Special?

What’s It Got Under The Hood?

2013 Mercedes G65 AMG - image 450391

Note: standard Mercedes-AMG G 65 pictured here.

“The V-12 gets a double-dose of turbocharging to produce 630 horsepower, plus 738 pound-feet of torque between 2,300 and 4,300 rpm”

Take a peek behind that three-pointed star on the grille, and you’ll find the same AMG-tuned 6.0-liter V-12 engine that you’d get in the standard model. Once again, the V-12 gets a double-dose of turbocharging to produce 630 horsepower, plus 1,000 Nm (738 pound-feet) of torque between 2,300 and 4,300 rpm. Lighting the fire is a multi-spark ignition system, with 12 individual twin-sparking ignition units. Adding some underhood glitz is a carbon fiber and aluminum engine cover.

That’s a lot of go, and although the AMG G 65 weighs in at a ground-pounding 3 tons (6,050 pounds), it’s got the right stuff to hit 62 mph in 5.3 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited at 230 km/h (143 mph).

“Top speed is electronically limited at 230 km/h (143 mph).”

Routing the muscle is an AMG-tuned seven-speed automatic transmission, which feeds a standard AWD system. The Final Edition also gets the same off-roading chops as the standard models, rocking high-travel suspension that enables slope climbing up to 80 percent, the ability to wade through water 60 cm (24 inches) deep, stability while driving at 28 degrees, a 27-degree angle of approach and departure, and a 22-degree breakover angle.

Sounds Pretty Standard, So Why Is It So Expensive?

2017 Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition - image 739732
“It comes equipped with new 21-inch wheels, complete with a five twin-spoke design, alloy construction, and bronzed color finish”

For starters, it comes equipped with new 21-inch wheels, complete with a five twin-spoke design, alloy construction, and bronzed color finish. Under the plus-sized rollers, you’ll find calipers finished in silver, while AMG Sport trim strips were added to the flanks. Additional matte bronze detailing was added to the skid plates, bumper trim, and side view mirrors housings. The radiator grille gets a black mesh insert and matte bronze surround, while high-gloss black was added to the protective strips. In the rear, the spare wheel cover is covered in glossy obsidian black paint, while matte black was added to the running boards and exhaust tips.

What About The Interior?

2017 Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition - image 739560
“The Final Edition adds stuff inside as well, tossing in the design Exclusive Package and adding nappa leather to the seats, plus carbon fiber to the seat side bolsters”

The Final Edition adds stuff inside as well, tossing in the design Exclusive Package and adding nappa leather to the seats, plus carbon fiber to the seat side bolsters. Light brown stitching is prevalent everywhere. Additional carbon fiber was added for the trim, while further bronze stitching adds a little more color. The grab handles get the Edition lettering milled right into them, while the floor mats get light brown leather edging. There’s also a flat-bottom AMG Performance steering wheel, which comes covered in black nappa leather, as well as the Seat Comfort package with “climatised” seats.

Conclusion

2017 Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition - image 739561

Granted, only European pricing has been announced at this point, but even then, the price tag on this thing is rather ridiculous. When you break it down, you’re basically paying an extra six-figures for some wheels, black and bronze trim, and the bragging rights to say you own one of 65 limited edition G-Wagens. But to be frank, that’s more than enough for Merc’s customers in this segment. Expect it to sell out fast.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG Project ONE Officially Unveiled

So finally, after what seemed like ages, Daimler finally unveiled the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE rather unceremoniously at the IAA 2017. Well, they brought out Lewis Hamilton who ridiculous new pair of glasses, but other than that the 1000+ horsepower hyper machine didn’t get much special treatment.

This Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is still a showcar and the final customer version may differ slightly. But the specs are confirmed, and boy are they amazing. The ONE gets a high-performance plug-in hybrid drive system with a 1.6-liter V6 single turbo engine and a couple of electric motors. They work in extremely complicated ways, but enable the engine to rev up to 11,000 rpm. The F1-based system has an output of more than 1,000 horsepower while remaining very, very fuel efficient.

Unveiling Ceremony:

The job of propelling the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE forward is trusted to Variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with hybrid-drive rear axle, electrically driven front axle and torque vectoring, coupled with an Automated AMG SPEEDSHIFT 8-speed manual transmission. Together they give the car a 0 to 200 km/h (yes, 200) sprint time of (in Race Start mode) under 6 seconds! Top speed is limited to 350 km/h, but you get 25 km of pure electric range.

Photo Album:

Being an F1-wannabe for the road, Mercedes-AMG Project ONE features a tonne of carbon fiber in its construction – even in the wheels – and benefits from racing-grade chassis and suspension systems. And of course, it looks the part with a spaceship-like exterior and F1-like interior complete with a racing steering wheel. But because it’s a Mercedes you also get air conditioning system, power windows and COMAND infotainment. Pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed.

PostHeaderIcon Selective Breeding Brings About an Ugly Supercar – The Mercedes-AMG Project One

The Mercedes-AMG Project One is here, and the first thing that comes to mind for me is that Mercedes really needs to quit playing with people’s emotions. Under the metal, you’ll find a 1.6-liter V-6 that features a unique setup straight from Formula One. It features a single turbo charger that is assisted by an electric motor to go with another electric motor in the crankcase and two motors at the front axle. The motor inside the turbocharger (not sure how that’s going to stand up to the excessive heat of the exhaust) spools up the turbo while the electric motor attached to the crankshaft via a spur gear. It delivers as much as 120 kW of power while the turbo charger is spooled by a 90kW motor. The engine sits in the middle of the vehicle, just ahead of the rear axle, and can handle speeds as high as 11,000 rpm. This is made possible by pneumatic valve springs instead of the typical mechanical springs. Meanwhile, the motors on the front wheels drive each wheel individually and can reach speeds as high as 50,000 rpm – 30,000 more than cure “state of the art technology.” All told, the Project One promises a system output of over 1,000 horsepower and a top speed “beyond” 217 mph all from that tiny engine and four electric motors.

The battery system itself is an 800-volt system, so that’s double the usual voltage associated with plug-in hybrids, is stored in the floorboard just behind the front axle. The actual capacity of the battery is unknown at this time, but Mercedes promises that maximum acceleration will get you up to 112 mph in “under six seconds” thanks to the electric motors and V-6 engine. Shifting duties are handled by an automated, eight-speed manual transmission that is said to have been developed from scratch for the Project one. It can shift itself or be shifted by the paddles ahead of the steering wheel. So, with that in mind, it’s basically an automatic transmission so don’t let the previous wording fool you – there’s no clutch pedal here. The onboard electrics are powered by that massive lithium-ion battery as well, but it is done by a converter that’s built into the battery system to prevent oversupply by the high-voltage system. There’s a lot more to this car than power output and performance, though, so let’s talk a little more about the exterior and interior design below.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG S63-S65

The S-Class is an old nameplate for Mercedes, dating all the way back to the ‘50s. Back then, Merc called it the Sonderklasse (“Special Class” in its native German), adopting the current “S-Class” badge in the early ‘70s. These days, you can get a variety of S-Class variants, but the quickest of the bunch tout the letters “AMG” on the trunk lid. Tuned by the automaker’s independent performance division, these titans of European motoring offer all the traditional comfort and luxury you’d expect, but add a dollop of furious DTM-themed performance on top, creating one serious slice of automobile as a result. Available in several different body styles, two-door variants include a coupe and a cabriolet, with either the twin-turbo V-8-powered S63 or the twin-turbo V-12-powerd S65 rounding out the powertrain options. Keeping things fresh, Merc just announced updates for the 2018 model year, including tweaked styling and a new V-8 for the S63, once again continuing the tradition established over six decades in the past.

However, this latest refresh brings with it a few questions, the most pressing of which pertains to the S63’s new engine. While the eight gets a displacement downgrade, power is up, challenging the twelve in terms of peak output and straight up trouncing the S65 in terms of acceleration numbers. Which begs the question – why get the S65 when the S63 is arguably the better buy? Read on to find out, plus learn about all the updates for 2018.
