PostHeaderIcon Official: Mercedes-AMG GT4 Customer Racing Car

mercedes-amg_gt4_1

They may have become businessmen in recent years, the masters of the luxury segment and the makers of some of the most lavishly equipped super saloons, but AMG engineers are still racing guys at heart. That’s why they just went ahead and made a new customer racing car in form of Mercedes-AMG GT4, even though no one really asked for it!

AMG basically saw the success of the GT3 model and decided what the hell, let’s make a GT4 version too for those who are into this category. The Mercedes-AMG GT4 is based on the production GT R and uses the same basic engine, but it’s been lightened and tuned and fitted with racing paraphernalia to meet the requirements and regulations of the international GT4 racing series.

And it’s because of those regulations that the R-based GT4 makes the same kind of power as a GT S, 375 kW (510 hp) and a maximum torque of over 600 Nm. The motor is mated to a sequential six-speed competition gearbox (transaxle) from the GT3 version, and a differential that is adjustable from the outside is employed for competition. Safety features include rollcage of high-strength steel, screwed onto the aluminium spaceframe, carbon driver safety cell compatible with the HANS (Head And Neck Support), extrication hatch in the roof and a powerful fire extinguishing system.

Mercedes-AMG GT4 customer racing car will be handed over to the buyers at the end of 2017.

V8-Powered DB11_08

Taking their relationship with Mercedes-AMG to the next level, Aston Martin is releasing a new version of the DB11 super GT with the V8 engine out of the AMG GT. The 2018 Aston Martin DB11 V8 bi-turbo expands the model’s range and should attract new buyers with its blend of performance and efficiency.

They haven’t even modified the AMG engine for use in the Aston Martin DB11 V8. It makes the same 510 horsepower as in the Mercedes. It is lighter than the V12 though (a saving of 115kg) and so it is still capable of decent performance with a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 187 mph. Meanwhile this big Grand Tourer returns CO2 emissions of 230g/km and an EU Combined fuel economy figure of 28.5mpg.

Aston Martin DB11 V8 is re-tuned to make use of its lighter weight compared to the V12 version. It comes with revised suspension bushing, geometry, anti-roll bars, springs, dampers and ESP software, all of which should give it a more sports car-like feel. Visual distinctions include a unique alloy wheel finish, dark headlamp bezels and a pair of bonnet vents instead of the quartet featured on the V12. The interior design and options are the same as the V12 model.

Prices for the V8-powered DB11 star from £144.900 in the UK, €184,000 in Germany and $198,995 in the US.

50 Jahre Mercedes-AMG Feier im Rahmen des 24-Stunden-Rennen am Nürburgring

Daimler has planned many celebratory events for the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG, the Affalterbach-tuner which was incorporated into the company half a century ago and since then has become the byword for high-quality performance driving. And they are kicking things off with a handy video highlighting the best products of the past 50 years.

Mercedes-AMG will also mark the 50th anniversary of the brand with a number of limited editions and collector’s version of current models such as AMG GT3 Edition 50 with only five copies featuring bespoke exterior and interior appointments.

“Our strategic expansion of the product range has put us on course for success around the world. With more than 400 Performance Centres, we have also continued our expansion at the point of sales. The 63 series models still constitute our core model series, and delight car enthusiasts around the world. In addition, our sports car series, which was developed entirely in-house, is now available as a broad-based family, to which we will add a four-door variant next year, once more demonstrating our competence as a sports car brand. We will further expand our broad product range with a new product line in the compact segment. In this way we have set the course for continued sustainable growth. It is up to us to not only celebrate the success story of Mercedes-AMG now, but to help shape the performance of the future during one of the most exciting periods of automotive history,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

AMG began meddling with the C-Class in 1995 — one year after the C-Class debuted — when it released the C36 AMG and its 268-horsepower V-6. The 1998 model year brought about the release of the C43 AMG, which featured a larger V-8 engine rated at 302 ponies. AMG then followed that up with the 349-horsepower C32 AMG in 2002, and then with the 362-horsepower C55 AMG in 2005. Finally, in 2008, the C63 AMG sent the sedan into 450-horsepower territory with a huge 6.2-liter V-8 tweaked to generate 451 horses. With the standard 2015 C-Class having arrived in dealerships in early 2014, Mercedes-Benz is rolling out a brand-new iteration of the AMG-prepped C63.This time around dubbed Mercedes-AMG C63, with the Germans dropping the Benz moniker from the official name, the new-generation vehicle marks the beginning of a new era for the sedan.

Much like its predecessor did in 2008, the 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 gets a brand-new engine in the form of a biturbo, 4.0-liter V-8. The unit is identical with the one previously launched in the AMG GT sports car and comes not with just more horsepower, but with improved fuel efficiency as well. Read on for the full details surrounding AMG’s new high-performance compact.

Update 5/26/2017:The Mercedes C-Class is up for a mid-cycle update, and now we’re finally getting the first look at the facelifted version of the C63. The spy shots still show some camo, but give us an idea of what to expect later this year when the updated C-Class makes its debut. Check out the spy shots section below to hear about what we know so far.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG S 63 And S 65 Updated In Shanghai; Still Silly Fast

Merc’s flagship four-door just got a buncha upgrades at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show, and while the German automaker puts fuel efficiency and a cylinder deactivation system at the top of its list, fear not – both models are still crazy fast. Tweaks were applied to the engine, transmission, and AWD system, not to mention the exterior styling and interior design, and the result is a mighty slab of Teutonic speed and luxury that’s every inch worthy of bearing the Mercedes torch.

Let’s jump straight into the greasy bits, starting with the S 63 4Matic+. This thing gets a new 4.0-liter turbo V-8, ditching the old 5.5-liter turbo V-8 and replacing the lost displacement with more boost. Final output figures come to 612 horsepower, which is 27 horses more than the old 5.5-liter lump. The 4.0-liter also makes an impressive 554 pound-feet of torque starting at just 2,750 rpm. Apply all that power, and you’ll go 0-to-62 mph in 3.5 seconds.

Cog swaps are handled by a 9-seed automatic gearbox, which replaces the old 7-speed box. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, although the optional Driver’s Package raises the limit to 186 mph.

Meanwhile, the even-faster S 65 gets the same 6.0-liter turbo V-12 as before, producing a very mighty 630 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is also a carryover, with a 7–speed automatic onboard to route the muscle.

PostHeaderIcon It's Time To Weep For The Sold Out Mercedes-AMG Project One Hypercar

Are those sniffles we’re hearing? Do you need some tissue to wipe those tears away? It’s unfortunate, but we do understand how you’re feeling in this particular case. Sure, it was probably a pipe dream from the very beginning, but all those hopes and dreams of owning a Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar will remain in the state of longing. Sadly, it’s not going to happen anymore – not here in the U.S. at least – now that Mercedes-AMG has closed down applications for the hypercar.

News of Mercedes-AMG’s decision to stop compiling a list of prospective U.S. customers was on the rumor mill for quite some time, but one of the hypercar’s project managers, Melissa Witek, essentially confirmed the rumors at the New York Auto Show. This effectively shut the door on prospective customers who have yet to make their reservations for the multi-million dollar machine. Worse, a customer isn’t guaranteed a car even if he or she managed to squeeze into making a reservation for the car. The Project One’s limited volume means that only a handful of these customers will be lucky enough to buy one of the 275 units that Mercedes-AMG will be building. Considering that 275 is the total number of units of the Project One hypercar, expect America’s allocation to be significantly lower than that, possibly around 50 or so units, or maybe even less.

That makes the Project One hypercar all the more desirable, which largely explains why a lot of people are going stir-crazy over it, even at the cost of paying $2.4 million for the yet-to-be-officially-named performance machine. It’s a lot of money for a car that will end up costing at least two times that of the first trinity of hypercars. What’s that? The Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder, of course. If the car lives up to the hype Mercedes-AMG is building up on it, then expect more people to start reaching for the tissues if they don’t end up getting their hands on one.

PostHeaderIcon Ford Poised For AMG Buyout, German-Tuned Mustang Possibly In The Works

Last October, German officials took steps to ban the production of new internal combustion-powered cars by the year 2030. Although mounting pressure to create ever more efficient green vehicles is expected over the next few decades, an outright ICE ban is considered an extreme measure that could pose a huge challenge to the established German automakers. As such, AMG, the performance engineering firm best known for churning out high-spec Mercedes vehicles, might head stateside to circumvent the looming ban. Ford has been tapped as one possible buyer, prompting rumors that the Blue Oval’s next pony car could see a high-performance AMG iteration sometime in the near future.

According to insiders, Ford is eager to pick up AMG to help bolster its line of sports cars, and in particular the Mustang. “The Mustang is a global product now,” a source familiar with the matter told TopSpeed. “It’s important that Ford gives customers the sense they are buying something sporty, but also of the highest quality. An AMG badge would help monumentally in that regard.”

Whether or not Ford will go through with the purchase remains to be seen. There still remains a possibility that a rival like General Motors could pick up the wayward tuning company instead, but it’s unlikely given Ford’s reported interest in the deal.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Wagon

Practicality, comfort, and speed. It’s a difficult combination to achieve, especially in the U.S., where customers are usually only offered two of these characteristics, but not the third. Compounding the problem is the fact that on these shores, practicality is almost always equated with a crossover or SUV body style, which is obviously less than ideal when it comes to performance duties. Mercifully, Mercedes-AMG has a whopper of a solution. It’s called the E 63 S Wagon, and it’s based off the four-door rocket sedan of the same name. Merc first introduced the E-Class in 1993, with the latest fifth-gen model ushered in for the 2017 model year, and incredibly, the brand has decided to continue to offer the E-Class Wagon in the U.S. Even more amazing is the fact that stateside high-speed thrill seekers can get their fix with the E 63 S Wagon iteration, which gets all the opulence, interior tech, exterior style, and over-powered performance as the E 63 S sedan, but with extra space in the hatch to boot.

But let’s just jump right into the specs that matter most, shall we? Under the hood of the AMG E 63 S Wagon is a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 gas burner, pumping out an astonishing 603 horsepower. Routing output to the ground is a nine-speed automatic transmission. It’s enough muscle to push this wagon to 60 mph in as little as 3.4 seconds, while the upgraded performance suspension system keeps it all in control. Step inside, and you get a familiar look and layout, infotainment system, and the usual premium features.

Sounds amazing, if you ask us. But the wagon body style can still be a tough sell in the U.S., even with just over 600 ponies on tap, which begs the question – what’s this thing really bring to the table?

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG CLA45 By Schmidt Revolution

A lot of people love the Mercedes-AMG CLA45. At the same time, a lot of other people don’t like it (hate’s a strong word, isn’t it?). Whichever side of the fence you’re on, there’s no denying that the AMG CLA45 is a car that’s ripe for an aftermarket program. Schmidt Revolution isn’t the biggest tuning name in the business, but it has developed a few humdingers over the years. Safe to say, the tuner knows what it’s doing, and that’s all coming to play with its new program for the AMG CLA45 that’s highlighted by an engine upgrade that gives the sedan a stout 400 horsepower.

The program as a whole is simple yet refined. That’s a good mix for a car that suffers from its own identity crisis, albeit through no fault of its own. Schmidt smartly went against overdoing the modifications in lieu of a more purposeful upgrade that gave the AMG CLA45 a consistent look to go with improved performance credentials.

The kit isn’t going to set any speed records, but with the changes in place, it helps turn the AMG CLA45 become the kind of high-performance sedan that can live up to its AMG name.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG E43 4Matic Estate

Mercedes has finally released the estate version of its tenth-generation E-Class, and to go with it, the AMG E43 4Matic variant. In typical Mercedes fashion, the new E43 Estate features a more aggressive front end with the standard AMG grille, a set of stylish wheels on the side, and a nice diffuser element with revised exhaust outlets in the rear. Inside, you’ll find a black interior with red accents, sport seats, lots of leather, and a multifunction configurable double color display that features its own AMG graphics. Under the hood, you’ll find AMG’s 3.0-liter Biturbo engine with a significant increase in horsepower and torque over the standard model, plus a nine-speed automatic transmission that feeds power to all four wheels.

Tobias Moers, the Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said, “In recent months we have considerably expanded our model range for performance-oriented customers with our new 43 models, creating numerous new ways of entering the world of Mercedes-AMG. The new E43 4Matic Estate adds a particularly versatile alternative for business and recreation to this portfolio.”

It’s no secret that the station wagon segment has seen better days, with the current market only offering a handful of wagon or estate models to choose from. Be that as it may, brands like Audi, Subaru, and in this case, Mercedes, have all managed to continuously give a breath of life into the estate market. The announcement of the E-Class wagon was a pretty big deal, bringing yet another model to the E-Class lineup, but now that Mercedes has also announced the E43 Estate, the lineup gets even better with a new performance wagon for a pretty bland market. So, let’s take a good look at the new Mercedes-AMG E43 Wagon and how it breathes new life into the market.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG Considering Adding Another AMG Model

The success of the Mercedes-AMG GT coupe is giving the German automaker reason to believe that another dedicated AMG model could be offered, one that would sit above the popular sports car. AMG boss Tobias Moers touched on that possibility in a recent conversation with Autocar, hinting that if the model does hit production, it would take up the slot vacated by the SLS AMG.

If the model does get the approval of Mercedes management, Moers indicated that AMG could go in a number of different directions on how it wants to model to come out. The common belief though, in addition to it sitting above the AMG GT, is that it could be packaged as a mid-engine hybrid supercar that would draw technologies from both the automaker’s current crop of road cars and its Formula One operation. A lightweight construction and electrical power are believed to be the most important elements of the car and taking into account the circumstances, such a proposal wouldn’t be difficult to execute considering that Mercedes already has the resources and the technology to make it work.

The model’s status is still be in its infancy and there are still a lot of things that could happen on how the model will be shaped. But according to Moers, don’t expect it to veer into the direction of a limited-edition hypercar like the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1, or Ferrari LaFerrari. That’s a non-starter, according to the AMG chief, largely because Mercedes-AMG isn’t planning to enter that ultra exclusive market anytime soon.

So with that avenue out of the question, the likely scenario for this model would be as tech-loaded rival to the McLaren 650S and the Ferrari 488 GTB. It’s worth noting that the SLS AMG served as direct rivals to the 650S and the 488 GTB’s predecessors, the McLaren 12C and the Ferrari 458 Italia, respectively.

In the event the project is approved, there is a scenario that it could be offered in a number of different variants. This could include coupe, convertible, and special edition models, similar to the strategy being employed by its rivals. There’s no production timetable for the supercar, but if Mercedes-AMG is as serious about it as Moers appears to be, expect an announcement to arrive sometime within 2016.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG Looking To Add "At Least" 10 New Models By Year's End

Mercedes is cooking up some big plans for its high-performance division and if the fruits come to bear, we could be in line for at least 10 new models bearing the AMG nameplate. This exciting development came from no less than Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers, who spoke to Automotive News and elaborated on plans to beef up the AMG lineup in light of the division’s growing sales volume.

Moers didn’t specify which existing AMG variants will receive new members to their families, but he did say that at least 10 will be added before 2016 ends. What’s clear is that the big wigs over at Daimler are toasting the peaking popularity of AMG. In 2015 alone, sales of AMG models reached 68,875 units, an impressive increase of 40 percent from its sales numbers the year before.

Demand is definitely on the uptick and Mercedes is smart to take advantage of maximizing that potential. Adding more models to its lineup will go a long way in addressing that, but the German automaker is also exploring other ways to leverage AMG’s popularity to reach more audiences.

According to Moers, one way of doing that is increasing the profile of AMG among its massive Mercedes dealership network. Dedicated AMG showroom areas are increasing and Mercedes itself is considering setting up stand-alone AMG showrooms. One is already scheduled to open in Japan and another one could follow in Australia, if it’s determined feasible for that market.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate "Rottweiler" by Piecha

It doesn’t take someone of high intellect to understand that wagons aren’t as sexy as sports cars. That’s never been the case and that’ll never be the case unless automakers completely reinvent the way we look at these cars. But, just because they don’t look sporty in the traditional sense, that doesn’t mean they can’t perform like a sports car. Take the case of the 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate. On the surface, you won’t mistake it for its two-door brother. But, pop open the hood, and it becomes a different story.

Now take that story and add another chapter to it in the form of Piecha Design. The German tuner knows Mercedes models like the back of its hand and that disposition has led it to create some of the fiercest programs for Affalterbach’s finest. This time, it’s set its sights on the aforementioned AMG C63 S Estate, the kind of car that runs like a sports car, despite its grocery-getter body.

The kit, appropriately dubbed the “Rottweiler,” is comprehensive. It’s got an aerodynamic kit, a new set of wheels, and most importantly, an engine upgrade that gives it enough power to shame some of the industry’s finest sports cars. That’s saying a lot for an estate, but the proof is in the pudding. Go check it out and see how angry this Piecha-tuned AMG C63 S Estate can be.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet

Mercedes is debuting a ton of AMG products in New York this year, including the GLC43, E43, and CLA45. The latest addition to the roster is the new C63 Cabriolet, which follows hot on the heels of the C-Class Cabriolet and C43 Cabriolet that dropped in Geneva earlier this month. The C63 Cab adds the usual high-performance AMG’d bits and pieces, like an aggressive exterior package and an upgraded interior. The biggest news, however, is what’s making the go, as this range-topper replaces the C43’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with a twin-turbo V-8.

Buyers can choose between two levels of C63 Cab – the standard version, or the even-crazier C63 S. Both are fire-breathing tire-shredders with a zeal for velocity, very much in line with the established AMG go-faster philosophy. But does the open-top design dilute the formula?

Updated 03/23/2016: The 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 was officially revealed in New York! Read on for all the details.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG CLA45 Shooting Brake

In recent years, Mercedes-Benz made huge steps toward expanding its vehicle lineup. Its new products not only gave the Germans access to previously unexplored markets, but also helped create completely new segments. One such model was the CLA. Introduced in 2013 as a smaller and affordable proposition to the sleek CLS, the CLA was a huge success in both Europe and the U.S. in its first two years on the market. In 2014, Mercedes added a wagon to the CLA lineup, calling it the Shooting Brake.

Also a smaller version of the CLS Shooting Brake, the coupe-styled compact wagon received an AMG version in 2015, powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder used in the A45 AMG. For 2016, the CLA Shooting Brake received the more powerful engine from the facelifted hot-hatch. Only a year has passed since then, and Mercedes has prepared yet another upgrade for the Shooting Brake.

Unveiled alongside its standard sibling and sedan versions, the AMG CLA45 Shooting Brake receives its first mid-cycle facelift. Not surprisingly, modifications are mild and include revised bumper sections, new wheels, and new trim for the interior. Unfortunately, there is no word whether the Shooting Brake will finally come to the U.S. or not. Given that most automakers have quit selling wagons Stateside, chances are this sleek grocery getter won’t cross the pond to the U.S. for many years to come. Still, the CLA45 Shooting Brake is a unique vehicle worth checking out and that’s exactly what we’ll do in the review below.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG C63 Black Series

A few years back, Mercedes replaced the CLC with a real C-Class Coupe. In 2016, we finally got the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe – the replacement for the W204-based 2015 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe. The new C63 Coupe took on Mercedes new design language and a new 4.0-liter V-8 that has become common in AMG-based vehicles. There was a 2013 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe, so it is only fitting that there will eventually be a Mercedes-AMG C63 Black Series that boasts the new styling and engine from the new C63.

That said, we decided to have our resident artist create a rendering of the C63 Black Series ahead of time, and we were excited to see what he came up with. Obviously, it will look quite similar to the C63, but it will have all the goodies normally associated with a track-focused black series, including some more aggressive body styling and some black accenting to give it that darker appearance that stands out among other models in the crowd.

We’ve been excited to take a deeper look at the C63 Black Series, and now that we have a predictive rendering, we’re going to do just that. Join us as we look over the rendering and make some predictions about the C63 Black Series.
