2018 Audi A8-0

Yep, here it is, one of the most highly teased cars in recent memory, the all-new 2018 Audi A8. For all the hype that surrounded this car’s debut it sure doesn’t look all that exciting, does it? But that is not really the point with the A8. This luxury sedan is designed to set new standards of luxury and technology in this segment, stuff that is traditionally the S-Class‘s job.

So design-wise the new 2018 Audi A8 is very Audi-ish with mostly straight lines and sharp angels. If you dig that, great. If you don’t, well, you still have the BMW 7 Series with all those curves. The interior design of the new A8 is a much neater job. The cabin just looks high-class, and as for the features, it is packed with stuff you didn’t know you needed. The car has Matrix LED reading lights and a foot massage feature. The rear seat remote, with its OLED display as large as a smartphone, is a removable unit housed in the center armrest.

In terms of engines and powertrain, the 2018 Audi A8 launches in Europe with a 3.0 TDI and a 3.0 TFSI. The diesel develops 210 kW (286 hp), and the gasoline version 250 kW (340 hp). Two eight-cylinder versions – a 4.0 TDI with 320 kW (435 hp) and a 4.0 TFSI with 338 kW (460 hp) – will follow slightly later. These all come with the Mild Hybrid system which consists of a belt alternator starter (BAS) with a 48 volt electrical system. There is also a plug-in hybrid available with the long-wheelbase A8 L e-tron boasting 330 kW (449 hp) of system power and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of system torque out of a 3.0 liter V6 mated to an electric motor. It offers 50 km of zero-emission driving.

But perhaps the coolest thing about the 2018 Audi A8 is its AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology features. The list includes traffic jam pilot which takes charge of driving in slow-moving traffic at up to 60 km/h (37.3 mph),  Audi AI remote parking pilot and the Audi AI remote garage pilot which autonomously steer the A8 into and out of a parking space or a garage, self-learning navigation, Audi AI active suspension, and Audi Wireless Charging, a pad in the garage floor that transfers the power inductively to a receiver coil in the automobile with a power output of 3.6 kW.

Prices for the new Audi A8 luxury sedan start at EUR 90,600 for the A8, and EUR 94,100 for the A8L. The first production units will hit the market in late fall 2017.

PostHeaderIcon New Audi A8 Will Launch Company’s New Dashboard Technology

The long-awaited debut of the Audi A8 happens today, and if the hype surrounding the company’s new flagship model is any indication, we could be in store for a few treats. One particular aspect about the new A8 that’s getting a lot of attention is its dashboard, and just in time for the sedan’s debut, Audi Design boss Marc Lichte is throwing more wood on that fire by hinting at what could very well be the latest innovation to come out of Ingolstadt.

In an interview released by Audi itself, Lichte explained that the A8 will hardly feature any buttons or switches in the interior. In their place will be a new touchscreen display integrated into the dashboard, essentially serving as the brain and command center. Lichte’s comments aren’t exactly ground-breaking; we’ve already seen Audi’s new virtual dashboard, albeit in concept guise when it was introduced with the E-tron Quattro Concept back at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s unclear how much of the virtual dashboard from the concept is going to be used in the A8, but remember, that dashboard featured not one, but three different digital displays that were responsible for all of the vehicle’s operations. All signs, including Lichte’s comments, seem to point to the new A8 getting a production version of this virtual dash. How close the production version is to the concept will only be answered when Audi finally pulls the covers off of the new A8. Good thing then that it’s happening today.

While the Audi A8 has always seemed to wear an understated tuxedo with its sleek looks and undeniable style, the third-generation model has been in circulation for the last seven years. It’s one of the last few models to still sport Audi’s tall, square grille and it’s time for a serious revamp. So, it was no surprise when we started seeing prototypes hitting the streets and the Nürburgring, and now – after a quick peak at the Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere, Audi has laid it all out on the table. As is the usual case with Audi, overall design changes are somewhat minimal, but it does get the new, wide grille, a pair of sexy headlight units, and repositioned body lines that make it even more appealing than ever before. Inside, there’s a completely redesigned dashboard with new technology, updated user interface controls, and it finally gets Audi’s new piloted driving system which allows remote parking and semi-autonomous driving in highway traffic. To go along with this, the A8 gets a revises suspension system that includes all-wheel steering and active suspension. Topping off the new generation is a pair of reengineered, turbocharged V-6 engines that will eventually be joined by a pair of V-8 powerplants and a 6.0-liter W-12 for the range-topping model.

So, with all that in mind, one can’t help but wonder how the new A8 will stand up against the new Mercedes S-Class and the new BMW 7 Series. It’s obviously going to be a tough call as to which is better, but Audi is coming to the party prepared to throw down. So, let’s dive on in and take a better look at the new Audi A8 – there are lots of details to cover.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 Audi A8 Preview

2018 audi a8-0

We now have an official date and place for the debut of the all-new 2018 Audi A8: July 11 at Audi Summit in Barcelona. So it is probably a good time to go through the ‘preview’ information we have on the grandest Audi of them all, especially as this bad boy seems quite serious about wanting a bigger piece of the luxury segment pie.

In order to do that the 2018 Audi A8 needs to be more luxurious and more technologically advanced than Mercedes S-Class, and better to drive than BMW 7 Series. The luxury and driving part are yet to be evaluated, but even from the teaser material you can tell in terms of technology the new A8 is going to be at the top of its game. The car benefits from extensive use of Artificial Intelligence in systems as various as automated parking to traffic jam assist.

As for the powertrain, 2018 Audi A8 will introduce the firm’s latest electrification technologies with its mild-hybrid drive vehicles (MHEVs). All model regardless of the engine will boast this system with the A8 getting a beefy 48-volt version. This not only helps with the fuel efficiency, it’ll also enhance the performance of the car.

Audi A8 is also one of the lightest vehicles in its class thanks mainly to a sophisticated spaceframe made from a mix of material. For the next generation of the Audi A8, an intelligent mix of four materials is being used for the first time in the weight-bearing body structure – more materials than in any of the brand’s previous production models. The luxury sedan is thus once again rightfully claiming its role as an innovation driver in automotive lightweight design: Its low weight and impressive rigidity offer greater performance, efficiency and safety.

Before its official debut in Barcelona, the all-new Audi A8 will appear on the silver screen making a guest appearance in the blockbuster ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ in theaters worldwide in July.

It was just a month ago that Audi confirmed that a new Audi A8 would grace showrooms for the 2018 model year. Now, the brand with four rings has been caught testing that next-gen A8 at the Nürburgring, and it looks like there is going to be at least one dramatic change. The car itself looks to retain the same size and overall shape of the current model, but the new model will have an emphasis on its look of overall width – especially with the evolution of Audi’s “Singleframe” grille that is now much wider and stretched out compared to anything we’ve seen in Audi’s current lineup. At first, it seems kind of goofy, but after taking a closer look, a wider, more pronounced grille is actually beneficial to the A8.

The new A8 is still sports some pretty heavy camo, so there is only so much we can make out of these spy shots. We do know that the new A8 will ride on the new MLB Evo platform that also underpins the Audi Q7, so there should be a significant drop in weight to go with the potential for alternative powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid model. With that said, I still think Audi has some suspension tuning to do, as the A8 in these pictures seems to be experiencing excessive body roll on the corners as it maneuvers around the Nürburgring.

Now that we’ve talked a little about it, let’s grab the wheel and take a closer look at what the next A8 might bring to the table when it makes its debut later this year.

Updated 04/11/2017: Our spy photographers caught the upcoming Audi A8 out for a new testing session and wearing less camouflage than previous times. The new A8 will be making its official debut in July.

PostHeaderIcon Audi Confirms New A8 For 2017, One Electric Model A Year Starting 2018

It’s no secret that Audi has been performing quite well lately. Despite all the setbacks, the brand delivered a total of 1.8 million cars last year and now aims to do even better this year. So far, between January and April, the brand sold 620,100 Audi models, representing an increase of 4.9 percent over the previous year. To keep things going at such a strong pace, Audi is on a mission to launch new or upgraded models as quickly as possible. These models include the next Audi A8, the Audi Q7 e-Tron Quattro, and a new all-electric SUV.

All three models I’ve mentioned are a pretty big deal for the four rings, but each one represents a benchmark for the brand. The Audi A8 will be the first production model from Audi that is capable of piloted driving at up to 37 mph with what Audi is calling “traffic-jam pilot.” So, the A8 will help the brand transition from partial to highly automated driving, with the expectation of fully automated driving by 2025.

Moving onto Audi’s electrification strategy, there are two big things coming our way. First is the Audi Q7 e-Tron Quattro. It will be the brand’s second plug-in hybrid and is said to achieve better than 117 mpg on the U.S. scale or two liters per 100 km on the European scale. Furthermore, it will be capable of all-electric travel for up to 56 km, or about 35 miles. More importantly, however, is the all-electric SUV that will launch in 2018. It will be Audi’s first fully electric large-series vehicle and, according to Audi, will have a range of 310 miles. It will be produced in Brussels along with the batteries that will power it.

PostHeaderIcon Audi A8L Extended

In early 2016 our paparazzi spotted a longer-than-usual Audi A8 somewhere in snowy Sweden. The limousine had six doors instead of four and looked awfully similar to the vehicle that was delivered to Harald V, the King of Norway, earlier last month, but the German license plate suggested the car in question was a test vehicle. Three months have passed since then and Audi confirmed that it has began producing a six-door variant of its full-size sedan.

Dubbed A8L Extended, the ultra-long, luxury model was conceived as a special one-off for an unnamed “European customer” and development took almost a year. Having received further requests for the custom sedan, Audi is launching the A8L Extended as a bespoke, limited-edition model that will rival offerings from Mercedes-Maybach.

Details about the six-door A8 and its availability are still scant, but Audi has provided just enough details and photos to learn more about the brand’s first venture into the ultra-luxury market. Have a look at our in-depth review below and stay tuned for information on pricing and options that will be made available for the XXL sedan.

Updated 04/11/2016: Audi dropped the official details on the A8L Extended.

PostHeaderIcon Spotlight: Magnolia Audi A8 L Exclusive

Magnolia Audi A8-L-0

Audi Forum Neckarsulm is introducing us to yet another superbly specced model, a Magnolia Audi A8 Long Wheelbase garnished with options from the Exclusive department. On the paint job alone this car deserves recognition, but the options are what truly set this A8 apart.

The paint work on the Magnolia Audi A8 L Exclusive is complemented with 7-spoke sport design wheels and fancy aluminum accents on the bumpers and grilles. Interestingly, the mirrors that are usually chromed on Exclusive Audis are finished in body color on this particular model.

Vavona bronze wood is the dominant feature of the interior, picked straight from the Exclusive catalog, paired with Valcona brown leather complete with ornamental stitching and inlays. Together they give the cabin a warm and fuzzy feeling. The best part of Magnolia Audi A8 L Exclusive is the rear passenger compartment where you find the bespoke Rear Seat Entertainment package with headrest monitors and console controls. The two-tone leather also covers the dashboard, consoles, and door cards, but the pillars and headliners are wrapped in Alcantara.

The Long Audi A8 is a 4.2 TDI V8 model powered by a diesel engine developing 385 hp and 850 Nm (626.93 lb-ft) of torque, good for a 0-100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds.

PostHeaderIcon Official: Audi A8 L 4.0T Sport

Audi A8 L Sport-0

It is usually England where most of Audi’s special models end up. But this time it’s the American market that is being treated to such a thing in form of the 2016 Audi A8 L 4.0T Sport. The 450 horsepower sports sedan hits the market bearing a price tag of $90,500.

Now, as for what could possibly persuade you to pay that kind of money for a big Audi, there isn’t much on the outside that could grab your attention. Well, there are lowered bumpers to give the car a sportier look and you get two additional 20’’ wheel options, but that’s about it. The main highlight of Audi A8 L 4.0T Sport is the amount of extra comfort and luxury amenities you get.

Audi A8 L Sport-1

The Sport A8, sort of against what its name stands for, comes with standard Executive and Luxury packages. What you get from these include 22-way Comfort front seats with Valcona leather and a sporty diamond pattern stitching plus seat ventilation and massage functions, Alcantara headliner, panoramic sunroof and acoustic glazing on the windows, Audi side assist with pre sense rear, Audi head-up display with navigation information, and Audi adaptive cruise control with stop & go, although this last one is optional.

So there you have it, the 2016 Audi A8 L 4.0T Sport for 90 grand. Sounds like good value if what you want is some seriously comfy seats.

PostHeaderIcon Audi A8 Edition 21 Announced for UK

Audi A8 Edition 21-0

Celebrating the 21th anniversary of the launch of the Audi A8, the UK branch of the German automaker announced the launch of a limited edition model. Called Audi A8 Edition 21, this model will be available in standard and Long Wheelbase but is limited to just 121 units.

Set to hit the roads in November, Audi A8 Edition 21 is quite possibly the most finely specced version of the car that’s ever been produced, boasting sport S8 front and rear bumpers, 20-inch double spoke alloy wheels with a titanium-look finish, Daytona grey pearl paint, Adaptive Audi Matrix LED headlights, and…

Inside the cabin you have the choice of cognac brown with black contrasting stitching or black leather with red contrasting stitching plus 22-way adjustability and integrated pneumatic lumbar and side bolster support, black cloth headlining and three-spoke multi-function steering wheel. Needless to say, you also get a number of ‘Edition 21’ badges.

Engine-wise, Audi A8 Edition 21 is a bit less glamorous than one would expect reading about its options. The car is powered by the base 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine which produces 262PS and 580Nm, connected to an 8-speed tiptronic transmission linked to quattro permanent all-wheel drive. It’s a great engine for the UK market, offering a good compromise between performance and fuel efficiency. Prices for the Edition 21 start at £72,525.

PostHeaderIcon Audi A8 – Driven

Sometimes I just don’t get along with a car. The Audi A8 L arrived in my driveway and it didn’t seem to be looking for trouble. Audi’s technobarge flagship wears its sheet metal like an understated tuxedo, exuding confidence and high quality with every curve of its Phantom Black pearl-effect sheet metal. Yet, by the end of my week with it I was muttering under my breath at just about every single thing it did, annoyed by the prospect of taking it out on the streets yet again.

Which is a shame, because the Audi A8 is a fine automobile. It’s just that sometimes you and your partner don’t quite mesh. No matter how well trained, personality conflicts can ruin any situation.

PostHeaderIcon Next Generation Audi A8 Will Get E-Turbo And Gesture Control

Compared with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Audi A8 has always been the underappreciated full-size German luxury car. Despite playing the plutocrat transportation game rather well and being a more absorbing drive than its rivals, it has always lagged behind in sales. But now Audi is throwing everything it has learned in the years since at the next-generation A8, including electric turbocharging, gesture controls and limited autonomous driving abilities.

The next A8 is expected to arrive in 2017 as the new flagship, and will pave the way in terms of styling (it will take a page from the Prologue Concept introduced at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show), engines and technology for the subsequent Audis. “The A8 will be the next generation of the every successful vehicle model for Audi, so what we are doing is looking at which future technologies make sense for our customers, what do they expect and how can we surprise out customers,” Audi technology boss Ulrich Hackenberg told Auto Express. “The next level of sophisticated technology will be in the A8.”

PostHeaderIcon Audi Produces Its First Batch Of e-diesel

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, carbon dioxide levels are at an 800,000-year high, but what if we could pluck CO2 particles out of thin air to use as a raw material for a carbon-neutral fuel? It’s not a pipe dream, because it’s exactly what Audi is doing at a research facility in Dresden, Germany. Called e-diesel, the fuel is currently being produced (following an incredibly rapid commissioning phase of just four months) and already powering an A8 3.0 TDI.

Researched and produced in partnership with Dresden-based energy company Sunfire, the only raw materials needed to make e-diesel are CO2 and water. The method works using the power-to-liquid principle and primarily uses CO2 supplied by a biogas company. The secondary source of CO2 is even more impressive: Another Audi partner, Climeworks in Zurich, has developed a way to capture CO2 particles from ambient air. That means CO2 emitted from e-diesel cars (and anything else that emits CO2, including humans) can potentially be recaptured and reused as fuel, making it a carbon neutral energy source.

PostHeaderIcon Next-Generation Audi A8 Will be Fully Autonomous

Coming soon to a dealer near you, fully autonomous Audis.

Audi is apparently planning for its next A8 sedan to be a better driver than you. Yep, Audi’s Head of Product and Technology Communications Stefan Moser told Motoring the upcoming 2017 Audi A8 will be fully autonomous, capable of driving completely on its own.

“If we have a proper system it will always be better than human beings,” he said. “They are not phoning, not looking at pretty girls, no distractions.”

Moser also commented on Audi’s commitment to being the first automaker to bring such a comprehensive system to the marketplace. Now it is just a matter of letting the legislation catch up with the technology, he continues.

Besides changing the laws on the books, Audi must ensure its autonomous driving systems will work in every situation and every weather condition. “The camera system is not able to always do everything. We have also lasers; we will have more sensors too. With a laser you can see in fog, for instance,” Moser told Motoring.

Audi has already made history with the recent lapping of Hockenheim racetrack with a driver-free RS 7. The public demonstration went perfectly to plan, showcasing Audi’s self-driving technology.

Currently, cars in Germany are restricted by law to only allow roughly 10 seconds of autonomous driving at a time, requiring input from the driver at each interval. Now thanks to some states in the U.S., Audi will have the chance to bring self-driving cars to market without hindrance. As time progresses, laws limiting self-driving cars will surely change and the restrictions will fall.
