PostHeaderIcon Audi Q2 e-tron

Audi is in the advanced stages of testing an all-electric version of its Q2 crossover, the smallest high riding vehicle it currently sells. The Q2 e-Tron (which is what it will most likely be called) will complete the Q2 lineup that also includes the SQ2 performance model, as well as an extended wheelbase Q2 destined for the Chinese market. The Q2 EV won’t differ much visually from other models in the range, but with a careful look, you will be able to spot that it is the battery powered model. The camouflaged prototype snagged by our spies has no exhaust pipe, for instance, and it’s bound to have additional small exterior giveaways as to what it is. It’s also been suggested that the Q2 e-Tron might use the lengthened platform of the Chinese-market model, but at the moment we really cannot make a definitive judgment on that based solely on this batch of spy shots. Furthermore, the Q2 e-Tron may only be sold in China, although there is a good chance it will reach Europe as well – this would represent the first sale of a long-wheelbase Chinese-market Audi model in Europe.

PostHeaderIcon Audi Q2 by ABT

How do you make a car special when it’s basically a substitute for your other models? As for the looks, the Q2 has it in its DNA, and the interior can put models twice its price to shame. So, what do you do? Simple – Make it more powerful. But doesn’t that leave you with the option of buying the Q3 instead? It does, but not when it’s retuned by ABT Sportsline company. ABT has reworked on the Q2’s most powerful petrol and diesel engines to give us a true road-runner.

PostHeaderIcon Is China Getting a Longer Q2 EV?

We already know that the Audi Q2 is here because it was launched in 2017. We also know that a long-wheelbase version of the Q2, dubbed the Q2 L, will go on sale in China in 2019. Now it seems that the small crossover family is getting another member in the form of an all-electric Q2 L that’s tipped to make its debut in the next few years.

“The model will reportedly carry a driving range of around 310 miles.”

Word of the all-electric Q2 L’s existence comes by way of Indian Autos Blog, which claims that the pure electric variant of the Q2 carries the internal codename “Audi X55 BEV,” a nod to the Q2’s own “X55” codename. Details are scarce at this point, but the report indicated that the model will use the same MQB platform that currently underpins a number of Audi models, including the Q2. The model will reportedly carry a driving range of around 310 miles.

Beyond these details, there’s very little information to go by as far as the all-electric Q2 L is concerned. While there is a distinct possibility that it could arrive, it’s hard to assume that’s going to happen when non-electric Q2 hasn’t even arrived yet. From what we know, the Q2 L is expected to arrive in China in 2019 as a 2018 model. That much was revealed through images from an Audi product planning presentation that the German automaker had in China last year. There have also been reports that the Q2 L will go to India, though that’s also contingent on how much Audi plans to spend to develop an RHD variant of the Q2 L.

“The Q2 L is expected to arrive in China in 2019 as a 2018 model”

An all-electric Audi Q2 L sounds good on paper, but there are plenty of reasonable questions to ask regarding the feasibility of the variant, including the kind of weight it’s carrying and how that translates to its efficiency. The setup of the chassis and suspension will also have to be reconfigured to fit electric motors instead of a traditional engine.

Given the world we live in, it’s possible that Audi does have an all-electric Q2 L on the table. But, until more details are revealed, we’re taking this report with a handful of salt.

audi q2 awd-1

If you gloss over the fact that there is an inherent paradox with the Audi Q2 All-Wheel-Drive – those who want a small crossover don’t need AWD, and those who need AWD don’t want a small crossover – you can sort of make sense of this car. After all, if you are having the looks of a SUV on your hatchback you might as well get some of its capabilities.

And capable 2018 Audi Q2 All-Wheel-Drive (£31,760 to £36,750) sure is. What you got here is a plucky little thing that can deal with a variety of situations and will rarely let you down. The car comes with a couple of good engines too, 150PS 2.0 TDI quattro and 190PS 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic. The latter sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 141 mph. Trim wise you get  S line and Edition #1 specification, and as for fuel economy the former does 44.8mpg combined and 144g/km and the latter 44.1mpg combined and 146g/km.

The quattro system on Audi Q2 All-Wheel-Drive is a pretty sophisticated one. Ensuring optimal traction and handling under any road conditions, the quattro system’s electrohydraulically actuated multi-plate clutch distributes torque continuously between the axles. Its seven-speed S tronic incorporates a freewheeling mode when the standard Audi drive select handling system is set to “efficiency” mode, and with the start-stop function, the engine already shuts off when speed drops to 4.3mph.

audi q2 awd-2

As for the specs, standard kit on the S-Line include LED headlights, an LED interior lighting pack, S line interior and exterior styling cues, 18-inch alloy wheels, C-pillar blades in matt Titanium grey and front sports seats, plus Audi Smartphone Interface, SD card-based MMI Navigation and Audi connect infotainment service package, light and rain sensors and Audi drive select. The unique Edition #1 gets 19-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels and Quantum grey paint, which is used exclusively here, a black styling pack and Manhattan grey contrast bumpers, wheel arch trims, side skirts and bumper inserts, plus sports seats in Granite grey Fine Nappa leather with Amaretto brown contrast stripes and stitching, a multi-coloured LED interior lighting pack.

PostHeaderIcon Audi Q2 Edition #1

Launched for the 2017 model year, the Q2 is the latest Audi nameplate to hit the market and the company’s smallest crossover yet. Underpinned by Volkswagen’s MQB platform that is shared with the Golf and the Audi TT among other cars, the Q2 was designed by Marc Lichte and shares styling cues with the larger Q3 and Q5 SUVs. Available with a selection of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines, the Q2 enables Audi to compete in a new niche. At 4.2 meters (165 inches) long, the Q2 is about the size of the Mini Countryman, which makes it just the second vehicle to join this premium class.

With no competition from Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the foreseeable future, the Q2 will most likely take a significant bite into the Countryman’s sales over the next years thanks to its more rugged design and luxurious interior. With the small crossover having just arrived in dealerships, Audi is launching a limited-edition model to sit at the top of the range. It’s called the Q2 Edition #1 and for the time being it is available in the United Kingdom only.

Essentially an S Line model with additional features, the Edition #1 sports a bespoke paint job and handful of custom interior features. On top of that, it comes with extra standard equipment to justify the more expensive price tag. But, more about that in our short review below.

Audi Q2 Convertible

Many people are still looking at the Range Rover Evoque Convertible with one raised eyebrow, not sure how they feel about this open-top SUV and questioning the whole idea. It remains to be seen how the public reacts to the Evoque Cabrio, but rest assured, if it turns out to be a hit then everybody will be making a convertible crossover.

That’s where this comes is, a speculative rendering of Audi Q2 Convertible. The new compact crossover, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, seems like a good candidate for the head chopping treatment. The smallest member of Audi’s Q family does look rather interesting sans the roof. We say interesting because it would be a big leap calling this – or any topless SUV, for that matter – good looking. They are just too controversial.

And just in case this imaginary Audi Q2 Convertible became a real thing someday, let’s remind ourselves what sort of engines the car can be had with. That hardtop launches in a few months with three TFSI and three TDI engines, including a new 1.0 liter three-cylinder unit with 116 hp. There’s also a 1.4 liter with 150 hp and 2.0 TFSI with 190 hp. Diesel choices include a 1.6 liter with 116 hp and a 2.0 liter with either 150 or 190 hp.

PostHeaderIcon Audi Q2 Revealed at Geneva Motor Show

Audi Q2-0

Let’s take a break from big and fancy stuff and checkout one of 2016 Geneva Motor Show’s smallest, yet most significant cars. It’s the all-new Audi Q2 we’re talking about, the fourth member of Audi Q family and that offers all the goodness of this series in a more compact package.

To give you an idea just how compact Audi Q2 really is, the car has a length of 4.19, a width of 1.79 meters, and height of 1.51 meters. It’s the perfect size for a city crossover, but it’s designed to have a presence way above its pay grade. The Q2 features a high-mounted Singleframe grille and C-pillars with color offset blades.

Audi engineers have also packed the small crossover full of comfort and safety technologies, including head-up display, Audi pre sense front with auto brake, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, traffic jam assist, the lane-departure warning system Audi side assist, the lane-keeping assistant Audi active lane assist, traffic sign recognition and rear cross-traffic assist.

Engine-wise, the 2017 Audi Q2 (going on sale in November this year) launches in Europe with five powertrains, including a 1.0-litre three-cylinder TFSI, two four-cylinder petrol with 1.4 and 2.0 litres displacement, and two four-cylinder diesel engines in 1.6 and 2.0 litres capacities. You can choose between a six-speed manual or a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission, but quattro AWD depends on the engine you pick.

PostHeaderIcon Audi Successfully Negotiates With FCA Over Q2 And Q4 Names

Audi’s alphanumeric “Q#” nomenclature is finally complete after the company announced that it had successfully negotiated with Fiat Chrysler over the rights to the Q2 and Q4 names. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler made the announcement, saying that the two sides have reached an agreement that allowed Audi to take ownership of the two names.

Stadler didn’t dive into the specifics of the transaction, but he did hint that Audi had to give up some of its trademarks to FCA in exchange. In the purest sense, it was a trade that both sides agreed on, ending years of Audi’s relentless pursuit in completing its alphanumeric “Q#” lineup.

With the Q2 and Q4 names now in its possession, the German automaker is expected to waste little time putting the two names to use. The Q2, in particular, will be used on a sub-compact crossover that’s being tipped to make its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. The model will be available in the same choice of engines as the A1 and will use Volkswagen’s MQB platform.

Meanwhile, the Q4 will likely be used on a coupe-like variant of the next-generation Audi Q3. Once it’s released, it would be slotted right smack in the middle of a segment that’s currently inhabited by its two biggest rivals, the BMW X4 and the Mercedes GLE-Class.

As for FCA, there’s no word on what it received from Audi as compensation for letting go of the Q2 and Q4. Back when it those two names were owned by FCA, Q2 was used as the name of its limited slip differential technology while Q4 was the designation for the all-wheel drive variants of the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte.

According to Stadler, no amount of the money was part of the deal so it points to the possibility that this trade could’ve been a simple trademark-for-trademark transaction.

PostHeaderIcon Audi Q2

Audi has finally put to bed the rumors of an addition to its Q lineup of SUVs. Introduced at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the 2017 Audi Q2 expands the automaker’s reach into the entry-level category of luxury crossovers.

Looking more like a high-riding hot hatch, the Q2 is a lightweight five door that helps usher in Audi’s new design styling. The front grille wears a new polygon shape while the C-pillar sports a “color blade” that can be customized, much like the first-generation R8. Six available engines, two transmissions, a bevy of safety equipment and driver aids, and Audi’s new glass gauge cluster make the Q2 perhaps the most tech-savvy option in the current crop of crossovers.

The technology extends into the unseen, as well. The Q2 is built from form-hardened steels that increase strength without adding excessive weight. Its size is fairly diminutive at only 13.7 feet long with a wheelbase of 8.5 feet. Its width is also tidy at 5.9 feet. Not only should this make the Q2 an outstanding performer in crash testing, but with a curb weight of only 2,656 pounds, the crossover should be a blast to drive.

Those passing judgment based on horsepower numbers shouldn’t be fooled – Audi says its engine lineup has been “right-sized” to provide the best power to weight optimization. The top performer of the bunch is the 2.0-liter TFSI gasoline mill that cranks out 190 horsepower. For turbodiesel fans, the 2.0-liter TDI is offered in two power levels, with the horsepower peaking at 190, matching the TFSI. Audi has not announced torque figures.

The Q2 is blazing new trails for Audi in the compact crossover segment, but with its light weight, tech-filled cabin, wide range of powertrains, and striking looks, it’s easy to foresee Audi’s domination over the competition.

Update 03/01/2016: Audi has officially debuted the 2017 Q2 crossover at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
