PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne Design Series by Mulliner

At this point, it’s reasonable to expect that whenever Mulliner and Bentley get together, something special is usually in the works. We’ve seen it time and time again, and now we can look forward to seeing two more Bentleys getting the full-scale Mulliner treatment. One of these models is the Bentley Mulsanne, and it’s headed to the Frankfurt Motor Show as the Mulsanne Design Series by Mulliner.

I know what some of you are thinking; another Mulsanne project by Mulliner? Does this ever end? Well, it’s unlikely that it will, but there’s no reason why it should end given the string of incredible projects undertaken by Bentley’s own personalization division. The Frankfurt-bound Mulsanne Design Series by Mulliner follows on the same path with its own set of upgrades and individualized design touches, though it is worth pointing out that as far as this particular example is concerned, there is something that’s, well, lacking. Maybe it’s the fact that we’ve all gotten used to Mulliner’s penchant for stringing along one exceptional program after another, but at some point, there will be a bump in the road, or to be more specific, something that doesn’t quite measure up to the obscenely high standards that Mulliner has created for itself. This is, in a lot of ways, one of the problems with Mulliner. Expectations always call for something exceptional, and yet, what happens when a program falls a tad short of that? Well, see for yourselves.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Wants More One-Off Models In The Future

Just when it started to feel like we’d never run out of limited edition and one-off Bentley models, no less than the company’s own design chief Stefan Sielaff has come out saying that we should prepare ourselves for such a future. Apparently, “exploring more one-off, bespoke vehicles” is one of Sielaff’s primary goals now that he’s been named the man in charge of Bentley’s Mulliner division. In his own words, Sielaff said that he wants to “explore” more of these models, where the “only limitation is the imagination of the customer.”

Those who love them some limited-edition and one-off Bentleys should be thrilled about this declaration, in part because of how Mulliner has legitimately positioned itself as one of the best personalization divisions of any automaker in the business today. Recent releases like its collaboration with Bamford show what Mulliner is capable of, even though it has rarely ventured into the world of complete stand-alone one-off models the way brands like Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, and most notably, Lamborghini have in the past. But there’s still time to change that narrative and it appears that time has come for Bentley. We’ve seen what Mulliner can do by stamping its identity on existing Bentley models. Now we’re about to see what it’s made of when it’s given a blank slate and the opportunity to create something entirely unique from it.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne by Mansory

You’d be hard-pressed to find a tuner that has embraced the outlandish more times than Mansory. Run down its catalog of past of works and they’re all there for you to see. There are the Siracusa kits for the Ferraris, the Carbonado kits for the Lamborghinis, and while I’m at it, remember the Bentley Continental Vitesse Rose from 2009? Yikes. As colorful as Mansory’s tuning history is, we can all agree that it makes the kind of statements that very few of its peers in the tuning game are able to do. Which is why it is a bit disappointing to find out that its latest program – one for the Bentley Mulsanne – came with a headline that begins with “subtle modifications.”

The words “Mansory” and “subtle” should be mentioned in the same sentence about as often as the words “Reliant Robin” and “reliable” are. And yet, here we are, presenting a Mansory program for Bentley’s luxury limousine that doesn’t quite feel like something that the German tuner worked on its tuning laboratory. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of fancy carbon fiber bits and pieces here and there. It even has a notable power upgrade, which is rare in the aftermarket scene for a car as massive as the Mulsanne. But since this is Mansory we’re talking about, there’s a level of audacious expectation that has to be met, one that I this program wasn’t able to reach. I don’t think it’s a sign that the tuner is slowing down on the imagination aspect of the game, so it does make me wonder if this is Mansory’s way of showing a side of itself that we rarely get to see.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne Gets Mild Upgrades from Mansory and Startech

mansory-mulsanne-0

A car of Bentley Mulsanne‘s class and prestige does not really need modifications and upgrades, mainly because it’s like getting a Cartier watch and then spray painting the bezel. But for those who aren’t satisfied with the car in standard guise, there are now some mild upgrades available from some big time tuners.

These package are offered by Mansory and Startech, and while visually they are fairly similar – after all, there is only so much you can do to this car’s unique appearance without ruining it – the Mansory one is a much more through job in that it also gets a power upgrade kit and even an interior treatment.

Mansory Bentley Mulsanne comes with carbon fiber front lip and air inlet covers as well as side skirts, a rear spoiler lip, and diffuser insert. These are complemented with a set of 10 x 22″ “M8″ rims wrapped with ultra-high-performance 285/35ZR22 tyres for the front and rear axles. Performance-wise, Mansory Mulsanne gets a boost from 512 hp to 585 hp with 1,100 Nm of torque for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h. As for the interior, you can choose brushed aluminium, carbon, burled or high-gloss piano for trims, and special floor mats.

The strictly visual Startech Bentley Mulsanne gets the some sort of cosmetic upgrades with front and rear apron modifications featuring lip spoiler, side skirts, and diffusers, but somehow it looks more serious than Mansory’s car. It is almost good enough for us to ignore the performance and interior upgrades on the former offering. Almost!

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne Hallmark Series by Mulliner

Introduced in 2010 as a replacement for the 11-year-old Arnage, the Mulsanne is currently Bentley’s range-topping sedan, sitting above the Continental Flying Spur in the lineup. The limousine received an equipment update in 2013 and various special-edition versions, including a performance-oriented Speed model until 2016, when a mid-cycle facelift was launched. Come 2017 and Bentley introduced the Mulsanne Hallmark Series by Mulliner, arguably the most exquisite limited-edition based on the full-size sedan yet.

Described as a highly exclusive model “inspired by the finest precious metals and luxury materials used by the very best jewellers,” the Hallmark Series is available across the entire Mulsanne range, meaning it can be ordered for the extended wheelbase model too. Marketed as the “ultimate statement of luxury” in the Bentley family, the limited-edition model is quite the flamboyant proposition, being available in two-tone paint finishes and with either silver or gold highlights. A bit too flashy if you ask me, but I’m sure this model will be extremely popular in the Middle East where silver an gold emblems are a big thing.

The Mulsanne Hallmark Series by Mulliner makes its official debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, so make sure you stick around for photos from the event.

PostHeaderIcon Bamford X Bentley Mulliner Mulsanne Speed

It’s safe to say that Mulliner, Bentley’s in-house bespoke personalization division, has established a reputation for being a purveyor of some of the most unique Bentleys we’ve seen in a long time. That’s what happens when you’re responsible for building one-off to limited edition models for the British auto brand. You’re afforded the freedom to be creative with your work and as far as recent examples are concerned – the Mulsanne Sinjari Edition being one of them – that’s exactly what Mulliner has done. Now, it’s at it again with another creation: a one-off Mulsanne Speed built specifically for George Bamford, the man behind Bamford Watch Department, regarded by many as the U.K.’s premier bespoke timepiece personalization company.

The one-off Mulsanne is formally called the Bamford X Bentley Mulliner and if you’re sensitive to cars that have been turned upside their heads, you might want to look away for this one. But if you can take the proverbial heat, then feast your eyes on this enthralling work by Mulliner.

Like most of the bespoke division’s past works, the Bamford X Bentley Mulliner is more than just an expression of extreme personalization. There’s a story behind the work that Mulliner put into this Mulsanne to make it a true and legitimate one-off piece. Specific materials and methods were used to represent the identity of the BWD brand, and like a true craftsman whose name and reputation are worth the land he’s standing on, Mulliner went over and above it’s own capabilities to create a bespoke Mulsanne that’s unlikely to be replicated anytime soon.

“This is personalization. This is how you do personalization.” This is what George Bamford himself said when he saw the Bamford X Bentley Mulliner.

Wiser words have never been spoken.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne Convertible

Launched in 2010, the current Bentley Mulsanne replaced the dated Arnage in the company’s lineup and revived a nameplate the brand previously used between 1980 and 1992. At 5,575 mm (219.5 inches) in length, the Mulsanne is currently Bentley’s largest sedan, sitting above the Flying Spur. The most interesting fact about the Mulsanne is that it received a styling language of its own, being the only Bentley that’s not based on the Continental. Updated in 2013, the full-size sedan spawned several special edition models, as well as a performance-oriented Speed model.

Scheduled to remain on sale for at least three more years, the Mulsanne could soon receive a two-door convertible version. Such a model has been in the rumor mill since 2012 and gained more traction in 2014 when the Brits showcased the Grand Convertible concept. The much-anticipated production model was canceled in 2015 when Wolfgang Durheimer was replaced by Wolfgang Schreiber as Bentley CEO, but now that the former has return to the helm of the brand, the Mulsanne cabriolet is back on the drawing board.

Bentley has yet to make an official statement about it, but Durheimer recently told CarAndDriver that the Grand Convertible concept could be turned into a production car in Mulliner’s workshop. The luxury drop-top would be built in a limited batch and sold with a huge sticker compared to the sedan. Should that happen, Bentley will offer its first full-size convertible since the 2009, when the Arnage-based Azure was discontinued.

There’s no specific timetable for the Mulsanne convertible, but this gives us just enough time to take guesses upon what it may bring to the table. We also created a rendering to go with our speculative review below. Check it out and stay tuned for updates.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Prepares To Bring The 6.75-Liter V-8 Engine To An End

It seems hard to believe, but Bentley’s famed 6.75-liter V-8 engine has been around for 57 years. Over the years, the engine has been upgraded to comply with ever-increasing emissions and fuel economy standards that brought the aging power plant into the world of fuel injection, camshaft phasing, and stronger internal components. The engine hasn’t exactly exceeded its life expectancy yet, as Bentley could bring things like direct fuel injection of cam-in-cam technology, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen.

Despite the fact that Bentley could continue to upgrade and morph the 6.75-liter to continue complying with current standards, Car and Driver reports that Bentley has chosen not to continue dumping money into the constantly aging engine. Apparently, Wolfgang Durheimer – the CEO of Bentley – said that the V-8 has found its “final home” and indicated that Bentley’s next flagship model will be powered by a 12-cylinder engine.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering that BMW tried to kill off the L-Series engine in the late 90s when it introduced the 4.4-liter V-8. Of course, shortly after that Volkswagen took over and reintroduced the L-Series engine. Since then, the engine has been continuously upgraded, but as it goes in life – all good things eventually come to an end. Keep in mind that the 6.75-liter will still be around for at least a few years. Durheimer didn’t supply any timetable as to when it will unleash what is sure to be a beast of a 12-cylinder, and the Mulsanne was just updated for 2017, so Bentley has some time to develop its big power plant.

PostHeaderIcon Mulliner Could Build A Limited-Edition Bentley Mulsanne Convertible

In 2012, Bentley showcased a teaser of a Mulsanne-based convertible at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, getting everyone excited about a successor to the stately and elegant Azure. Originally slated for low-volume production, the drop-top was cancelled a year later, when Wolfgang Durheimer was replaced by Wolfgang Schreiber as Bentley CEO. The model came back into focus at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, where Bentley introduced the Grand Convertible concept, but Bentley declined rumors to turn it into a production model.

Come 2016 and a Mulsanne-based drop-top is again a possibility. That’s the word from Car and Driver, which claims that Durheimer’s return at the helm of the British brand will finally spawn a Bentley-badged competitor for the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. According to the source, the CEO is currently studying the possibility of having the Mulliner division built a small batch of only 20 convertibles that will be sold “to absolute connoisseurs at a very high price.”

The publication goes on to speculate that the Mulsanne cabriolet will hit the market by 2018 and cost somewhere around £1 million, which converts to nearly $1.5 million. There’s no word as to what nameplate it will carry, but Azure seems to be the obvious choice if Bentley wants to make use of its rich heritage.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne First Edition

At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Bentley Mulsanne finally received its mid-cycle facelift after more than five years in production. The update brought a new front grille and bumper, revised headlamps, new B-shaped wings on the front fenders, and new taillights on the outside, along with new wood veneers and a new infotainment system on the inside. The same upgrade was transferred onto the Speed model and the longer, Extended Wheelbase version. At the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, Bentley unveiled the First Edition, a limited-edition package that makes the Mulsanne a more exclusive vehicle.

Available for all three models, the First Edition is mostly about interior add-ons and does very little to change the sedan’s appearance. However, the interior comes with new features such as a luxury silver vanity kit and rare wood veneer, which are more than enough to turn the standard Mulsanne into a bespoke Mulliner vehicle. Bentley plans to build only 50 examples of the First Edition across the new three-model family. Not exactly a lot compared to other mainstream manufacturers, but it’s quite a lot judging by the numerous luxury features and the expensive sticker these sedans are expected to carry.

Bentley had nothing to say about pricing, but if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne Speed

The Geneva Motor Show is one of the biggest auto shows in the world, so it is only fitting that just about every manufacturer – at least all the ones that matter anyway – bring their latest and greatest models to the show. You better believe Bentley is there, and this year it has debuted its refreshed Mulsanne. It didn’t bring just one model to the show, though; it brought two other models – the Mulsanne long wheelbase and the Mulsanne Speed. The latter is what I’m here to talk about today.

When you think about Bentley, it’s easy to imagine just relaxing in the back of one while some driver chauffeurs you from place to place. If that’s it what you want, you’ll be more interested in the long wheelbase Mulsanne. The Mulsanne Speed is meant to be driven, and fast, too. It’s a real driver’s car with a focus on unparalleled luxury. It’s suitable to be driven around in, but with a car like this, you’ll enjoy it a lot more if you’re the one at the helm.

If you’ve already seen the pictures of the new Mulsanne, and expected the Mulsanne Speed to host significant changes in appearance, you’re going to be disappointed. In classic Bentley style, the Mulsanne Speed does have some unique exterior styling cues, but the most important thing is what is going on in the drivetrain department. I’m covering all the details of the Mulsanne Speed right here, so sit back and click past the jump. Let’s get up close and personal with the Mulsanne Speed.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne By Mulliner

Bentley is known for producing some of the most posh and opulent vehicles on the road today. Only the finest interior materials are used by the craftsman who hand-assemble each car. But Bentley doesn’t offer a vehicle with seating for six – especially one configured with rear-facing seats. Not many automakers these days do. But when a customer approached Bentley’s customization department known as Mulliner, the company jumped at the chance to create something bespoke.

That’s just what happened here. This one-off customized Mulsanne is a full three feet longer than a standard Mulsanne, and offers seating for four in its rear cabin. A divider separates the driver and front passenger from the rear, complete with “smart glass” that changes from clear to opaque with a simple switch.

“The Mulsanne Grand Limousine showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of our in-house coachbuilder, Mulliner and exemplifies the way in which our experts consult with a customer to turn their vision into an extraordinary reality,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley’s chairman and chief executive. “The attention to detail, quality, creativity and skill applied to every Mulliner commission is truly unique in the automotive world.”

It takes a second for the mind to wrap around the idea. A customer wanted a Mulsanne limousine, so Bentley built it. Talk about service. Unlike other luxury automakers’ customization departments, Mulliner doesn’t stop with bespoke paint colors or specialty-dyed leathers. Mulliner literally created a limo version – presumably by chopping the Mulsanne apart and adding length – for a single customer. While it’s hard to imagine the costs and labor involved, Bentley’s Grand Limousine is assuredly not cheap – not by a long shot.

Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine-0

A few days after announcing the launch of a new Mulsanne, Bentley has now revealed at the Geneva Motor Show a limo version of the car. Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine is pitched as “the ultimate expression of bespoke automotive luxury, craftsmanship, individualisation and refinement.”

Built by Mulliner division, Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine is a full meter longer and 79 mm taller than the regular Mulsanne, and features a “private-aviation-style” cabin environment with features like electrochromic or ‘smart glass’, four individual seats with two of them rear-facing, a new HVAC system, Apple charging and docking stations, and the usual luxury goods such as veneered fold-out tables, a bottle cooler with frosted glass and crystal flutes, and a soft drink cabinet with bespoke tumblers.

The Mulliner touch has also resulted in a unique look for Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine. The paint job is a bespoke two-tone Silver Frost and Moroccan Blue, the wheels are unique 21 inch rims colour-matched to the exterior finish, and the Flying ‘B’ mascot is engraved with the words ‘Coachbuilt by Mulliner’. The car also comes with re-engineered chassis and suspension tuned for utmost comfort and safety of the, presumably, very important rear passengers. By the way, these guys get an intercom system to communicate with the driver.

PostHeaderIcon Official: 2017 Bentley Mulsanne Facelift

2017 Bentley Mulsanne-0

Just in time for the Geneva Motor Show Bentley revealed a new face-lifted version of its Mulsanne flagship saloon. Boasting new looks, technologies and features, the 2017 Bentley Mulsanne facelift is out for Maybach blood.

The new super deluxe super saloon launches in three guises of Mulsanne, Mulsanne Speed and Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase models. They all share the same 6¾-litre V8 engine with 512 PS (505 bhp / 377 kW) and 1,020 Nm (752 lb.ft) of torque which now has cylinder de-activation and variable cam phasing, but still not what you call efficient. Performance figures for this engine include 5.1 seconds to 60 mph and a top speed of 184 mph (296 km/h), except for the 537 PS Speed version which takes 4.8 seconds to reach 60 and can hit 190 mph.

As for the looks, the 2017 Bentley Mulsanne gets a complete makeover with new fenders, bonnet, radiator shell, grilles, lights and front and rear bumpers. Just like the old model, it’s hardly a beautiful look, but it has presence like nothing else. Inside the cabin the new stuff include redesigned seats, new door trims and armrests, unique glass switchgear and an industry-leading palette of 24 exquisite hide colours, in addition to the existing handcrafted wood, leather and metal fittings.

It may look somewhat retro, but 2017 Bentley Mulsanne packs a lot of technology features, such as a completely new infotainment system and navigation with an 8” display and 60GB hard drive, Blind Spot Warning system, Advanced Automatic Stability Control, Android tablets for the rear passenger, Airline seats in the long wheelbase models, air suspension system with Continuous Damping Control (CDC), and…

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne Beluga Edition by Mulliner

Bentley Mulsanne Beluga Edition-0

The latest model from “Mulliner Limited Editions” series boasting exclusive visual features and equipment is the Bentley Mulsanne Beluga Edition. This model is designed for those who enjoy a dark theme and also appreciate subtlety, because the Mulliner elements on this car are rather obscure.

The biggest highlight of Bentley Mulsanne Beluga Edition is the black paint work that is complemented with dark tinted Flying B with subtle laser-etched ‘Beluga Edition’ engraving, black painted lower brightware as well as gloss black painted Mulsanne Speed 21” directional wheels. All these dark elements give the car a cool and aggressive look, but as mentioned you have to look really close to notice the Mulliner touch.

Based on the Speed version, Bentley Mulsanne Beluga Edition also comes with exclusive steel sill plates showcasing the car’s official titles in an elaborate manner. Being a Speed means this Mulsanne features a 530bhp and 1,000 Nm version of the firm’s 6.75 liter bi-turbo V8 engine which enables it to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (0?100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) and on to a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h).

Bentley didn’t mention how many of these Beluga models they’re making, but they said this about Mulliner Limited Editions: “desired by many but driven only by a fortunate few.”

Launched in 2010 as a replacement for the Bentley Arnage, the Bentley Mulsanne has finally received its mid-cycle update. After months of speculation and camouflaged prototypes spotted as early as October 2015, we finally have confirmation that an updated sedan will arrive in dealerships in time for the 2017 model year.

Not surprisingly, Bentley didn’t meddle much with the Mulsanne’s design. The British brand is known for keeping a product around for more than a decade and throw in a few updates from time to time. This is exactly what happened with the Mulsanne, but to Bentley’s credit, the facelift brings more modifications to the exterior than expected. Maybe it’s all because Bentley has a new SUV in dealerships, which will most likely bite into Mulsanne and Flying Spur sales. With the Bentayga around to offer the same levels of luxury and a roomy interior, the Mulsanne needed a more comprehensive makeover in order to remain attractive.

Alongside the standard sedan, Bentley also unveiled the Extended Wheelbase and Speed versions of the Mulsanne. As the name suggests, the former comes with a longer wheelbase for enhanced rear-seat legroom, while the latter features a more powerful drivetrain among Speed-specific styling cues. All three cars will be showcased at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show between March 1st and 13th.

Bentley Mulsanne Wagon

This is what happens when there are no rules! Rain Prisk Design recently decided to let his mind roam free for a while, trying to imagine what a wagon version of a high-end luxury car would look like. This awesome Bentley Mulsanne Wagon is the result of this moment of madness.

In turning the Mulsanne into a station wagon, the designer took many liberties with the car, changing the front as well as the back end, coming up with his own headlight and fascia design for it, and lowering and widening the vehicle. These changes have added up to make Bentley Mulsanne Wagon a seriously cool and aggressive machine.

We’re not sure about the new headlights, but we are really digging the flared wheel arches and how the car is slammed on a set big black wheels on this Bentley Mulsanne Wagon. The dichotomy between the character of the Bentley as a prestigious British super deluxe saloon and the gangsta look it achieves through the use of all these features is what makes this virtual car an interesting proposition.

We can only imagine what sort of powertrain the designer would recommend for this beast. It’ll be probably something with at least 12 cylinders, a couple of turbochargers, and a super loud exhaust system!

PostHeaderIcon XCAR Reviews Bentley Mulsanne Speed: Video

In the world of high-end automobiles, there are usually two paths to take: the first is draped in finery, an extravagant experience for the passenger who is whisked away in the back seat in the utmost luxury, at ease and relaxed. The other is a realm of speed and tire smoke, where technology is in place not to coddle, but to render space-time as something pliable, ready to be molded under the furrowed brow of a driver in his element. These two spaces are seemingly at odds with one another, but that hasn’t kept automakers from attempting to stitch them together, just as Bentley tried to do with the Mulsanne Speed. Did it work? XCAR decided to find out with this video.

According to the review, part of this dichotomy is represented by Bentley’s current position, which is seen as pushing towards a performance-oriented future while honoring its luxury past. On one side are cars like the Continental GT and the EXP Speed 6 concept. On the other is the marque’s legacy, where attributes like comfort and stature were the primary concerns.

“People will sometimes oversimplify the difference between Bentley and Rolls-Royce by saying ‘you drive a Bentley, you’re driven in a Rolls-Royce.’ But that’s simply just not the case. You don’t buy a Rolls-Royce Wraith to be driven in it,” the narrator says. The Mulsanne, on the other hand, was definitely designed with the back seat passenger prioritized.

But there’s a problem. The Speed adds power and a sporting edge to a car that wasn’t necessarily meant to be a performer to begin with. So where does that leave it?

Press play to find out.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Mulsanne Speed Vs. Mercedes Maybach: Video

Have you ever had a difficult time deciding whether to buy a Bentley Mulsanne or a Mercedes-Benz S-Class? Of course you have, it’s something we all struggle with almost daily. Motor Trend did a video comparison of the Mulsanne and the S65 AMG a while back, but now there is an S600 Maybach and a Mulsanne Speed, making the previous video worthless as a means of easing our anxiety over the decision of which car to buy. But just in time to keep us from spiraling into a serious depression over it, Motor Trend has released a new video.

Since this is a comparison of two limousines, the reviewer only gives a brief impression of what the cars are like from behind the wheel, and the majority of the review takes place from the back seat. The level of comfort, quality of the materials and ease of access to champaign are all factored into this review, but it obviously mostly boils down to a matter of taste, as both are pretty exceptional vehicles.
