PostHeaderIcon How Would You Like to Have a Kitchen From Bentley?

There are automakers that have become so big in their own way that labeling them strictly as a “car company” doesn’t sound right anymore. Just about every auto brand has its own clothing line these days. A company like Ferrari has even branched out to other ventures, including having its own theme park in Abu Dhabi. Then there’s Bentley. The British automaker prides itself on being one of the finest luxury car makers in the world. Not many people know, though, that it’s also into home design now. At the 2018 Salone Internazionale de Mobile, Bentley was in attendance to showcase its newest creation: the Buxton kitchen.

PostHeaderIcon Caving Under Pressure: The Detroit Auto Show May, In Fact, Move to October

The Detroit Auto Show is on the cusp of a long-overdue decision that will effectively move the show out of the winter doldrums of January into a later month with a far more inviting climate. Nothing is official yet, but there’s growing momentum that America’s most esteemed auto show will be moved from January to October beginning in 2020. A decision is expected to be made in the coming weeks as the Detroit Auto Dealers Association is scheduled to vote on uprooting the show from its winter roots and moving it to the fall.

PostHeaderIcon Porsche’s Mission E Platform is Being Tossed Around Like a Dirty Diaper — Even Bentley Will Use it for an EV

Word has it that Bentley has given a four-door EV the green light for development and production, and it will serve as the brand’s flagship model once it finally arrives. The caveat to this statement is that the brand aims for it to be undeniably a Bentley at first glance and it must be a standalone model that isn’t based on any other model or concept produced by the brand thus far. That means it won’t be based on the EXP 12 Speed 6E Concept or the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Coupe. Of course, Bentley is a member of the dirty VAG, so you can bet that it will ride on the J1 platform, the same guts that will power models like the Porsche Mission E and the Audi E-Tron GT that we informed you up just a couple of weeks ago.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Bentayga Now Comes with a Built-In Safe

If you can afford to drive around in a car worth more than 200 grand, chances are you also have lots of other expensive stuff on you all the time. This is a cause of great distress to the rich folk when they have business to do in a bad part of the town and have to leave that stuff in the car. But not anymore, thanks to the new biometric storage option for the Bentley Bentayga.

The super deluxe SUV can now be specified with a secure storage box in the center console, featuring a capacitive fingerprint scanner. Granted, a determined thief can probably pry this thing open with a trusty crowbar or something. But at the very least it’s going to take them longer, in which time someone might come along and stop them.

The biometric safe in the Bentley Bentayga is not a very sizable one, though. It is only good for sunglasses, watches, or not so big smartphones. With two USB ports and an auxiliary socket, it can also be used for connecting and charging mobile devices both inside and outside of the unit. Bentley also makes a point of reminding us this safe is especially handy when utilizing valet parking services… which some may think is a racist statement.

Uday Senapati, Mulliner’s Head of Technical Operations, said: “The Mulliner Biometric Secure Stowage unit is hidden from view. We are incorporating the familiar capacitive fingerprint sensor technology from smartphones that can store multiple fingerprints, allowing the user to control who accesses their valuables.”

PostHeaderIcon 2019 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid Offers Efficient Luxury

Following the example of Range Rover, Bentley too is now going hybrid with their top dog SUV. The 2019 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is a remarkable achievement in the sense that it manages to blend unrivaled luxury with astonishing economy for a car of this caliber.

It has to be said though, Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is a bit paradoxical. The traditional Bentayga customer base are the kind that cherish excess and extravagance. Even the W12 engine is not enough for them and they have it tuned. And as for the sophisticated, environmentally conscious millionaires who might be interested in such a thing, well, those guys usually go for something less ostentatious. So it is hard to see who this car is aimed it.

At any rate, Bentley Bentayga Hybrid comes with a V6-hybrid powertrain which on paper seems to be an engineering marvel. Performance figures have not been released yet, but it does offer up to 31 miles (50 km) of pure electric driving, and emits only 75 g/km of CO2 which is amazing. What’s more, it’s a plug-in system with charging time of 2.5 hours on a fast charger and 7.5 hours on a household socket.

The Bentayag Hybrid puts as much emphasis on technology as it does on luxury. It comes with an intelligent navigation system that chooses the most efficient route to save juice, Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, Park Assist, Electronic Night Vision, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and 8 inch infotainment plus Connected Car ‘MyBentley3’ services, including Remote Battery Charging, Remote Heating & Cooling, and Vehicle Status Report, operated via a smartphone app. The SUV also features a bespoke Power Dock designed by Philippe Starck.

PostHeaderIcon One-Off Bentley Bentayga Mulliner for The Jockey Club

The British people are really fond of clubs and consider them the very height of society in any given sport or activity. So when it adds a lot to the prestige of the Bentley Bentayga Mulliner when the inspiration for a one-off edition of it is The Jockey Club. According to Bentley, this car celebrates “British luxury and racing heritage.”

As for the evidence of equestrian influence on this one-of-a-kind Bentley Bentayga Mulliner, we have the Spruce exterior color which is a modern take on British Racing Green, Blackline Spec exterior package, and 21” diamond-turned and black painted wheels. But to be honest you wouldn’t notice at first glance any of these feature and certainly won’t recognize them as special. For that you need to step inside.

Inside the Bentley Bentayga Mulliner for The Jockey Club you are greeted by Cumbrian Green and Saddle leather and some really cool tweed work. The twwed is accented with a light blue contrast stitch to the door and seat quilting and complemented with Burr Walnut wood veneer finished with a straight grained ‘picture frame’ cross-banding, just like the antique furniture in The Jockey Club’s private rooms. Last but not least, the veneer is adorned on the passenger side with a gold horse graphic. Lovely!

Uday Senapati, Mulliner’s Head of Technical Operations, comments: “The Cheltenham Festival is widely recognised as one of the finest horseracing events in the world, and The Festival’s unique sense of occasion is a perfect showcase for the world’s most exclusive SUV, the Bentayga. The Mulliner team has been deeply inspired by the equestrian lifestyle, and this has encouraged us to use new materials and techniques for the first time on a Bentley in developing this one-off commission.”

PostHeaderIcon Bentley to Unveil “Exciting” New Model at the Geneva Motor Show

British automaker Bentley just revealed its lineup for the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, and it seems we will be seeing a new model make its global debut in March. The firm had nothing to say about this “exciting new model,” but it did mention that it will be showcased alongside the recently introduced Continental GT, Bentayga V8, and new leathers and veneers from the Mulliner division. So what could it be?

Don’t Expect Anything Spectacular

“I'm positive that it will be new version of an existing model, most likely from the Continental GT or the Bentayga family”

With no hints whatsoever, there are many possibilities to consider. Although Bentley describes this model as “exciting” and “new,” it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be a brand-new car. I’m pretty positive that it will be a new version of an existing model, most likely from the Continental GT or the Bentayga family.

The GTC sounds like a good option. The third-generation Continental GT arrived at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it’s quite common for automakers to launch the convertible version some six months later. Another GT-based version could be the Flying Spur sedan. The four-door was spotted testing many times recently, and an official unveiling isn’t out of the question. On the other hand, the current Flying Spur is only five years old, and the consensus is that it should be around for a couple more years. But maybe Bentley wants to shorten the life cycle of its models, which would move it closer to more mainstream carmakers.

Another option would be to see the much-anticipated hybrid version of the Bentley Bentayga or the Mulsanne-based Grand Convertible that Bentley confirmed for limited production series in late 2017. Finally, Bentley could unveil a production version of the sleek Speed 6 sports car concept, but this isn’t very likely if you ask me.

What Else Will We See?

2018 Bentley Continental GT - image 728790

The Bentley booth will have four models in addition to the new release. The Brits will showcase a pair of Continental GT coupes, one of which will most likely feature some Mulliner goodies. The third car will be the new Bentayga V8, while the fourth will be the current Flying Spur sedan. However, the four-door won’t be a mundane model, as Bentley will use it to introduce a few new features from the Mulliner division. The W12 model will have new aniline leather with unique Golden Oak hide with a “distinct texture and natural grain” for enhanced comfort. It will also include new open-pore Walnut veneer with three thin, hand-applied layers of lacquer.

PostHeaderIcon Is There Room in the World for a Bentley Bentayga Pickup?

The days of automakers touting their purist roots are now over. The was a time when companies like Bentley and Lamborghini laughed at the thought of launching their own SUVs. Now, the Bentayga and Urus are out on the market. The shift in ideologies has given rise to models that we never thought would exist. Using that newfound rationale, what do you think is the likelihood that Bentley greenlights its own pickup?

2017 Bentley Bentayga - image 645145
“Can you imagine a Bentley Bentayga pickup that’s dripping in luxury in an off-road setting, getting down and dirty with little regard for vanity the way pickups are supposed to do?”

There are bridges that certain companies should not, under any circumstances, cross. For Bentley, this is one of them. I can’t even begin to imagine how Bentley can package a pickup and still give it the luxury juices that the company is known for. It’s one thing to do it on an SUV because the market has embraced it. But a pickup? That’s going too far, right?

I will cop to one thing: the rendering of the Bentayga pickup looks spot on. If I had to picture what a Bentayga pickup would look like, it would be like this. But, even if the allure is there, even if the intrigue and the interest are there, I cannot find any justification for Bentley to make this move unless somebody within the company loses his mind.

Can you imagine a Bentley Bentayga pickup that’s dripping in luxury in an off-road setting, getting down and dirty with little regard for vanity the way pickups are supposed to do? It’s a thought that has entered my mind for a fleeting second. Then it disappears just as quickly because it’s absolutely bat-dung crazy.
Who knows, somebody from the aftermarket world might think it’s a good idea and will decide to chop up a Bentayga in an effort to reinvent it as a pickup. I’d be onboard with that because the tuning world builds these kinds of crazy mashups all the time.

But Bentley? Forget about it. I’d bet my dilapidated Honda Civic that it never happens.

PostHeaderIcon Prior Design Bentley Bentayga PDXR Wide Body

So far most of the aftermarket kits we have seen for Bentley super deluxe SUV came from big-time, super deluxe tuners like Mansory. Now comes the Prior Design Bentley Bentayga PDXR with a fairly blue-collar treatment, and it is instantly the coolest body kit for this car yet. The beauty of this thing is in its simplicity.

Styling packages like that of Mansory are always too busy and ornamented with all sorts of unnecessary garnish. Prior Design Bentley Bentayga PDXR, on the other hand, adds only a few styling elements without getting carried away with carbon bits and snorkels and what have you. It is this subtlety that makes their product, in out opinion, superior to that of other tuners. Granted, when you get a custom Bentayga you want to show it off and so you may prefer something more flamboyant. But if you want to look cool, this is the package for you.

Photo Album:

The simple ingredients of Prior Design Bentley Bentayga PDXR wide body styling package include an add on front spoiler that sits on the stock bumper like it was always meant to be there, a rear diffuser with small and dignified fins, and the signature PDXR front and rear fender extensions. Upon request, Prior can also hook you up with a custom interior treatment, sport exhaust systems, suspension kits, and of course suitable wheels for your widened SUV. The only thing we don’t like about this particular car shown here is the color, which is a bit soulless.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Bentayga to Tackle Pikes Peak This Year

Pikes Peak hill climb event in Colorado is not exactly a stomping ground for the Bentley type of people. But even so, the British luxury car maker has decided to enter a racing edition of Bentley Bentayga SUV in this year’s edition of the event. And they are sending the top dog version.

As you know, Bentley Bentayga has a W12, a diesel and a new V8 petrol variants engine-wise. The one being prepared by Bentley’s motorsport arm for the hill climb event is the 600 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque W12 version. It’ll be interesting to see what this engine can do fitted to a lightened, toughened, and stiffened iteration of this car.

The Pikes Peak Bentley Bentayga will retain the production car’s intelligent all-wheel-drive and state-of-the-art air suspension together with Bentley’s pioneering 48-volt active anti-roll system. So even if the car doesn’t manage to set a good time climbing the 12.42-mile Colorado Springs hill with its 156 corners, the even will still buy it a lot of street cred with the offroad crowd… even though most of Pikes Peak course is asphalt these days.

Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Brian Gush, comments: “Since its launch, the Bentayga has set the luxury SUV benchmark with its unique combination of bespoke British craftsmanship, performance and grand touring ability. We hope to set another benchmark at the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb by conquering the most demanding mountain road course in the world.”

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Adds More Flavor To Its Lineup With A V-8 Bentayga

Lovers of the opulent, over-the-top Bentley Bentayga have reason to get excited, as the British automaker just announced it would expand the nameplate’s offerings with a new V-8 model. While slightly down on power compared to the previous 12-cylinder variant, the new Bentayga V8 still comes brimming with luxury, technology, and impressive speed.

Continue reading for the full story.

The Full Story

“The V-8 also manages up to 25 combined mpg thanks to start/stop tech and cylinder deactivation that turns the 'eight into a four-banger, a vast improvement compared to the W-12 model's 15 mpg combined.”

When Bentley initially announced its intentions to create its very first SUV, it hoped to do it right by offering customers the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive SUV in the world. The end result is a luxury box on wheels with a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W-12 engine, 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, an eight-speed automatic transmission, AWD, advanced air suspension, a 0-to-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, and a top speed of 187 mph. Pricing starts at over $200,000.

All told, Bentley frames the Bentayga as “the ultimate Grand Touring experience unrestricted by landscape or conditions.” Impressive stuff, no doubt about it, but obviously any time you create the “ultimate” of anything, you leave the door open for the creation of something, well, slightly less ultimate.

Enter the V-8 model, which arrives with a VW-sourced 4.0-liter V-8 powerplant, once again packing in the air thanks to two turbochargers. Standout features include 32 valves and a hot-vee placement for the twin-scroll turbos. Peak output is rated at 542 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, while the top speed clocks in at 180 mph and the 0-to-60 mph sprint is achieved in 4.4 seconds. The V-8 also manages up to 25 combined mpg thanks to start/stop tech and cylinder deactivation that turns the ’eight into a four-banger, a vast improvement compared to the W-12 model’s 15 mpg combined.

“Peak output is rated at 542 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, while the top speed clocks in at 180 mph and the 0-to-60 mph sprint is achieved in 4.4 seconds.”

Bentley claims that this new V-8 model assumes the nameplate’s “most sporting guise to date,” but considering the numbers in play here, we can’t help but question that statement. After all, the V-8 isn’t as powerful and the model isn’t nearly as fast as the ’12, while the rest of the equipment looks more or less unchanged.

Drivetrain Specifications

Bentley Bentayga V-8 Bentley Bentayga W-12

But maybe Bentley is referring to the brakes, as the V-8 Bentayga also comes with the option for carbon ceramic stoppers. This motorsport-inspired system is a first for the model, and Bentley brags its the largest front brake system available on any production car on the market, measuring in with
enormous 440 mm (17.3-inch) diameter discs and 10-pot calipers. Meanwhile, the rear gets 370 mm (14.6-inch) diameter brake discs.

Keeping it shiny side up is a multi-mode suspension system, with Bentley Drive Dynamics offering a variety of settings that adjust the SUV’s attitude to better suit either comfort or sportiness. The V-8 Bentayga also continues with standard off-roading settings for the Drive Dynamics system, and includes a variety of variable for the ride height.

“Bentley brags the optional carbon brakes are the largest front brakea available on any production car on the market, measuring in with enormous 440 mm (17.3-inch) diameter discs and 10-pot calipers.”

In terms of aesthetics, the V-8 Bentayga offers buyers 11 individual wheel design options, including a new 22-inch five-spoke design painted in polished black. Overall though, the V-8 model looks quite similar to the older W-12 model, with only minor visual cues added as indication of the new engine under the hood. That includes a black chrome grille up front and twin-quad exhaust tips in back.

Inside, the V-8 Bentayga continues the theme of superlative luxury, and now gets new wood trim and hide on the steering wheel, plus a new carbon fiber panel in high-gloss finish for extra sporting cred. A high-end stereo is also on the options list, offering 1,950 watts of power routed through 18 speakers. An 8-inch touchscreen takes its place in front, and there’s a removable 10.2-inch Android tablet in back, plus onboard WiFi support. Rounding out the tech suite is a variety of driver assists, such as adaptive cruise control, traffic assist, park assist, night vision, traffic sign recognition, and the like.

“Pricing for the V-8 Bentayga has not yet been announced, but we expect it to be well below that of the W-12 model.”

Pricing for the V-8 Bentayga has not yet been announced, but we expect it to be well below that of the W-12 model.

For reference, the new Bentayga will go up against competitors like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged.

The Merc is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 making around 415 horsepower and comes packing with some very impressive off-roading chops, and the whole package is expected to see a solid upgrade with the up-and-coming 2019 model year. Pricing starts at $123,600.

Meanwhile, the Range Rover gets 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque thanks to a blown 5.0-liter V-8, and while it’s definitely designed primary for paved-road duty, it’s got the goods for a jaunt in the rough stuff as well. Pricing starts at $104,890.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 Bentley Bentayga V8 Announced with 550 PS

It is no longer cool, at least among the sophisticated well-to-do people, to have the biggest, largest and most extravagant. That is why luxury car makers have adopted  downsizing routine this past few years, although downsizing for them is replacing a V12, or W12, engine with a V8. That is the case with the 2018 Bentley Bentayga V8.

Powered by a sweet-sounding 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine, the 2018 Bentley Bentayga V8is the ‘sensible’ version of this super deluxe SUV with 550 horsepower and 568 lb.ft. (770 Nm) of torque. That power is what makes the W12 version look utterly and completely pointless. It propels the road yacht from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds), on to a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h). Do you really need a faster SUV? A faster car?

The V8 Bentayga is even cooler and more fun than the W12. Whereas the W12 sounds like a huge vacuum cleaner at high revs, 2018 Bentley Bentayga V8, thanks to its quad exhaust system, has a nice burble throughout the rev range. Other notable highlights include optional carbon-ceramic brakes, a wood and hide steering wheel and the introduction of a high-gloss carbon-fibre interior panel finish.

What’s more, 2018 Bentley Bentayga V8 features Stop-Start technology, which can activate at ‘near-to-stop’ speeds, also contributes to the emissions figure.Speaking of which, the V8 averages 24.8 mpg / 11.4 l/100 km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 260 g/km. The SUV has a decent range of 64 miles (746 km) on one tank.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Continental GT First Edition

In keeping with its new tradition of rolling out First Edition models — the Bentayga SUV and the Mulsanne each got one — Bentley is rolling out the red carpet for the Continental GT First Edition. Described as the “ultimate expression of the legendary grand tourer,” the Continental GT First Edition gets plenty of exclusive appointments that help earn its status as a true first-off-the-line model.

Since this is Bentley we’re talking about, the phrase “exclusive appointments” take on a far more exclusive and opulent meaning. The features included in the Continental GT First Edition include fancy rotating displays, veneer options, and model-specific cosmetic identifiers that firmly establishes its special edition status. Basically, the Continental GT First Edition is a more exclusive version of an already exclusive luxury coupe.

Bentley didn’t say how many Continental GT First Edition units it plans to roll out, but given its status as a First Edition model, don’t expect it to be available in large quantities. The Bentayga First Edition, for example, was limited to just 608 examples, while the Mulsanne First Edition was even rarer with only 50 units made across its entire three-model range. My best guess is that the Continental GT First Edition will have a volume of around 100 units with each unit priced at around $300,000.

What makes the Bentley Continental GT First Edition special

2018 Bentley Continental GT First Edition - image 748820
“The specific color Bentley used to showcase the Continental GT First Edition is called “Orange Flame.””

The Bentley Continental GT First Edition is a lot of things. “Special” is one of them. There’s something to be said about the visual presentation of the car, beginning with its body color. If you must know, the specific color Bentley used to showcase the Continental GT First Edition is called “Orange Flame.” There was no mention on whether the special edition Continental GT only comes in an Orange Flame body, but a quick look at the car’s online configurator reveals a total of 13 different colors to choose from. There’s Rubino Red, Sequin Blue, Peacock, and Damson, to name a few.

In keeping with its British tradition, the body of the Continental GT First Edition gets Union Jack accents on the front fenders, just behind the front wheel arches.

“The first order of business is Bentley’s new Rotating Display, a central feature of the Continental GT First Edition that lets you switch through three different fascia panels depending on your mood”

The car looks provocative from the outside, but it’s really inside where it sets itself apart from other Continental GTs. The first order of business is Bentley’s new Rotating Display, a central feature of the Continental GT First Edition that lets you switch through three different fascia panels depending on your mood. A 12.3-display is the go-to configuration, but you can also switch to a more classic look with three analog dials or a veneer-only fascia that appears only when the car is not running.

Since we’re talking about veneers, the Continental GT First Edition has four different Dual Veneer versions to choose from: Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus, Dark Stained Madrona, Liquid Amber, and Tamo Ash. I don’t have the words to properly describe the look of each of these four veneers, but I trust that Bentley created them to look as fancy as their names sound. Regardless which wood option you get, Bentley will combine them with a Grand Black option that’s exclusive to the Continental GT First Edition. That means that no other special edition model will get this kind of option.

2018 Bentley Continental GT First Edition - image 748823
“A unique contrast stitch is also included, and is only available on the First Edition”

Speaking of features that are limited to the First Edition, the Continental GT also gets diamond-in-diamond quilt stitching on the seats, door panels, and rear quarter panels. A unique contrast stitch is also included, and is only available on the First Edition. A choice of three different audio systems are also on the table. A 650W audio system comes as standard, but there is an option to upgrade to either a 1500W Bang & Olufsen system or a range-topping 2200W Naim audio system.

It wouldn’t be a special edition Bentley Continental GT without Mulliner’s influence, would it? It’s a good thing that Bentley’s own personalization division is involved through its Mulliner Driving Specification. This package adds another layer of exclusivity to the special edition Continental. Drilled alloy foot pedals, jewel-finish oil and filler caps, and a set of 22-inch wheels are all included in the Mulliner Driving Specification. The wheels are also available in bright paint, black, hand polished, or full polish finishes.

“Needless to say, a car as loaded as the Continental GT First Edition does not come cheap”

Last but certainly not least are the Specification and Touring Specification packages. If you really want your Continental GT First Editions to be filled to the brim with features, the packages add goodies like hands-free trunk opening, pedestrian warning, traffic sign recognition, city braking, adaptive cruise, a heads-up display, and night vision with an infrared camera.

Needless to say, a car as loaded as the Continental GT First Edition does not come cheap. I mentioned that Bentley hasn’t identified a price for the units it plans to sell, but it’s safe to say that you’re looking at a car that could fetch somewhere around $300,000.

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Continental GT First Edition Details Announced

As great as the new Continental GT is in standard form, there are those who will nag Bentley through the ordering process about how it’s not special enough. To shut these guys up, at least for a while, they have come up with the Bentley Continental GT First Edition which is a more extravagant version of the grand tourer produced in limited numbers.

Bentley wanted this model to not only present extremely high levels of luxury to the discerning customers, but also to wow them with technological highlights. So Bentley Continental GT First Edition comes as standard with the Bentley Rotating Display 12.3 inch touchscreen display. This allows you to seamlessly switch between three different fascia panels to suit the mood of the cabin. But if you are more classically inclined you can swap this for a traditional instrument display with analogue dials.

Exquisite woodwork has always been a feature of the British brand, and 2018 Bentley Continental GT First Edition is no exception. You can choose from one of four unique Dual Veneers for the dashboard fascia, including amo Ash, Liquid Amber, Dark Stained Madrona and Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus. Whichever you go for, it’s complemented in the First Edition with Grand Black accents and mood lighting and illuminated sills emblazoned with ‘Bentley’. Other highlights of the cabin include  diamond-in-diamond quilt pattern on seats, door panels and rear quarter panels, contrast stitching, and such equipment as park assist, pedestrian warning and traffic sign recognition and available Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Boasting drilled alloy foot pedals, jewel-finish oil and filler caps, and unique, 22” wheels, and available in exclusive exterior colors, the Bentley Continental GT First Edition is powered by the high-end 6.0-litre, twin turbocharged W12 TSI engine. It produces 635 PS (626 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.) of torque, and accelerates the new Continental GT to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds), and on to a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph).

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Continental GTC

Introduced in 2003, the Bentley Continental GT has become a big hit for the British firm and its German parent company, Volkswagen AG, and the 2011 redesign made it even more popular. However, the update wasn’t as extensive as you’d expect from such a high-profile car, and the second-gen Conti became a bit long in the tooth after years. This is why Bentley launched a completely overhauled version for the 2018 model year. With the new Continental GT almost in dealerships, a convertible model is just around the corner.

Spotted testing on public roads since mid-2016, the new Continental GTC has yet to show itself without camouflage. However, that’s not to say we’re dealing with a mystery since most convertible are identical to the their coupe counterparts below the waist. Expect the new GTC to feel as modern as the recently unveiled Continental GT and boasts the same luxurious cabin with state-of-the-art technology. All of this will be complemented by the infinite headroom that comes with every cabriolet out there.

Update 11/24/2017: Our spy photographers caught the upcoming Bentley Continental GTC out for a new testing session, but this time during cold winter conditions.

Exterior

2018 Bentley Continental GTC - image 681739
“Unlike the second-gen Continental GT, the third-generation coupe is a bit more exciting to look at, as the redesigned exterior feels sportier, more modern, and actually pretty gorgeous”

Unlike the second-gen Continental GT, the third-generation coupe is a bit more exciting to look at, as the redesigned exterior feels sportier, more modern, and actually pretty gorgeous. Sure, it’s not as extreme as the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept, which had a supercarish stance, but it’s great to see something completely fresh on this grand tourer after almost 15 years. And the good news is that every single cool design feature of the Continental GT will find its way on the GTC model.

Look for the front fascia to include the same EXP 10-inspire grille, which is significantly wider and sits lower, the quad headlamps with the tiny units toward the corners, and the three-piece intake section in the bumper. The LEX Matrix lights with the unique design inspired by the finest cut-crystal glasses should be there too.

The longer and lower stance of the Conti GT’s profile will also carry over to the GTC, likely enhanced when the roof is wrapped in the trunk. With the soft-top up, the GTC should sport a similar profile, although the roof shape won’t be as sexy as on the coupe. The taillights shaped into ellipses, the similar exhaust pipes, the wider trunk lid and the beefier rear bumper should round off the new look.

Interior

2018 Bentley Continental GT - image 728810

Note: Bentley Continental GT interior pictured here.

“Having already seen the GT, it's safe to assume that the GTC will feel like a road yacht when the soft-top is folded flat”

The cabin of the new Continental GT provides every hint we need to unlock the features of the GTC. Remove the fancy talk and this means that the cabriolet will be identical to the coupe on inside. Except that it won’t have a metal roof obviously.

Having already seen the GT, it’s safe to assume that the GTC will feel like a road yacht when the soft-top is folded flat. Just look at that massive slab of wood that extends from the dashboard onto the door panels, the huge display, the modern controls, and the high-sheen center console. Speaking of which, customers will have access to loads of new veneers, including Koa, a wood that’s rarely used in cars, and a dual-veneer option.

Of course, almost every inch of the cabin is wrapped in fine leather highlighted by contrast stitching, and new quilt technique called “diamond in diamond.” Other fancy features will include 20-way adjustable seats with heating, cooling, and massage function, a big instrument cluster with 3D LED lights, and a 10-speaker, 650-watt sound system. The latter is just the standard unit, as options include a 16-speaker, 1,500-watt Bang & Olufsen system and an 18-speaker, 2,000-watt system by Naim.

2018 Bentley Continental GT - image 728816

Note: Bentley Continental GT interior pictured here.

“Of course, almost every inch of the cabin is wrapped in fine leather highlighted by contrast stitching”

But Arguably the most interesting feature of the upcoming Continental GTC will be Bentley’s new infotainment display. Called the Bentley Rotating Display and introduced with the Continental GT, the 12.3-inch touchscreen is housed in a three-sided unit that revolves in the center stack. When the ignition is off, the screen is hidden in the dashboard, with the wood veneer flowing uninterrupted from the passenger side to the instrument cluster. When the engine start button is pressed, however, the veneer in the center stack glides forward and rotates to reveal the big screen. The third side of the Rotating Display reveals three analogue dials displaying outside temperature, a compass, and chronometer. Opting for the latter gives you an elegant, old school-style dash that works great with the massive wood veneer.

Of course, another interesting feature will be the possibility to drive with an open top, which provides access not only to unlimited headroom, but also to a summer’s warm breeze, and the engine high-displacement roar.

Drivetrain

2018 Bentley Continental GTC - image 747165
“The third-generation Continental GT remained faithful to Bentley's already traditional 6.0-liter W-12 engine”

The third-generation Continental GT remained faithful to Bentley’s already traditional 6.0-liter W-12 engine. However, the British firm is now using a brand-new twin-turbo unit, which was developed before the Bentayga SUV was introduced.

The powerplant, which is shared with some Audi models, generates a massive 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. That’s an extra 44-horsepower and 133-pound-feet compared to the previous model. The significant extra oomph is also aided by the lighter architecture that shaves around 200 pounds lighter off the previous model. The transmission is a dual-clutch eight-speed automatic.

“The powerplant generates a massive 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque”

Performance-wise, the Conti GT needs 3.6 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standing start, a half-second quicker than the outgoing model. As it the case with most convertibles, the GTC will probably be a tenth-second slower, but a 3.7-second sprint is pretty impressive given the size and weight of this car. Top speed should increase, but don’t expect the GTC to be as fast as the coupe, which is good for 207 mph. However, it’s safe to assume that the drop-top will do at least 200 mph.

A new all-wheel-drive system will transfer the power to all four wheels. While the previous unit had a 40:60 power delivery split between front and rear wheels, the new AWD system varies the front-to-rear torque split based on driving conditions. But the Bentley Continental GTC will be mostly a rear-wheel-drive cars during normal driving.

Prices

With pricing information for the new Continental GT not yet available, estimating a precise sticker for the GTC model is almost impossible right now. However, with the third-generation coupe likely to retail from around $220,000, the Continental GTC could cost around $240,000 before options. A more affordable alternative could become available in 2018, when Bentley plans to roll out V-8 versions of the Continental GT. Assuming that the GTC will also get one, pricing should sit at just under $200,000.

Competition

Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante

2018 Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante - image 703676

When it comes to fast and luxurious British grand tourers, you can’t go wrong with the Vanquish Volante. Introduced in 2013, one year after Aston Martin revived the Vanquish name from its five-year hiatus, the Vanquish Volante sports a significantly more aggressive design and a powerful V-12 engine under its long hood. The mild 2018 update, likely the last of the current-generation car, added a new aerodynamic package including many carbon-fiber parts, new graphics on the outside and new materials and finishes on the inside. The output of the 5.9-liter V-12 engine was increased to 592 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, which enables the drop-top to hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is rated at 197 mph. Pricing starts from $312,950, which makes it significantly more expensive than the Bentley Continental GTC.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet

2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet - image 729446

The first convertible to wear the “S-Class” badge and Mercedes’ first open-top luxury four-seater since the early 1970s, the S-Class Cabriolet is one of the very few vehicles that can give the Continental GTC a run for its money. Sporty but elegant and fitted with Mercedes’ latest technology, it also comes with semi-autonomous drive and a powerful V-8 engine under the hood. The twin-turbo, 4.0-liter cranks out 463 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of twist, enabling the massive drop-top to hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. For those looking for an alternative to the W-12 GTC, Mercedes offers the AMG S63, which uses a more powerful V-8 rated at 612 horses. This version hits 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, which should be quicker than the upcoming W-12 GTC. Finally, the AMG S65 Cabriolet comes with a 6.0-liter V-12 that delivers 630 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. However, this model is RWD only and needs 4.1 seconds to reach 60 mph. Pricing is also on the Merc’s side. The standard model retails from $131,400, while the AMG fetches $176,400 before options. On the other hand, the AMG S65 costs a whopping $247,900.

Conclusion

2018 Bentley Continental GTC - image 735044

Arguably one of the most impressive luxury convertibles available on the market, the Continental GTC is about to get even better with the third-generation model. The new platform will solve the Continental’s weight problems, while access to hybrid drivetrains will enable Bentley to offer a more fuel-efficient model and improve the nameplate’s carbon footprint. The EXP 10 Speed 6-inspired design will also give the GTC a sportier stance that’s closer to the Vanquish, leaving the Continental Flying Spur sedan to parade as the more elegant proposition in the lineup.

  • Leave it
    • Expensive compared to the S-Class
    • Likely still slower than competition

PostHeaderIcon Bentley Bentayga Field Sports by Mulliner Belongs to a Bygone Era

It is delightful that in this climate of downsizing and extreme efficiency there are still those who care only for refinement and luxury. But their efforts are not in tune with the times and therefore could seem quite ridiculous to some. Such is the deal with the Bentley Bentayga Field Sports by Mulliner.

Built to be the “ultimate luxury SUV for field sports enthusiasts,” the Bentley Bentayga Field Sports by Mulliner is the result of a joint project between Bentley and luxury gun maker Purdey. The kind of person they had mind when designing this car, it appears, is the archetypal British aristocrat, perhaps a Duke or a high-caliber Lord, in need of a deluxe SUV to take on hunting trips around his huge estate. This sort of clientele is all but extinct, of course, which is why the Bentayga Field Sports is a one-off.

It is quite an exquisite thing though, this Bentley Bentayga Field Sports by Mulliner. There aren’t too many clues on the outside to give away the inner excellence of this car. For that you need to open the tailgate and marvel at the twin-compartment sliding stowage unit featuring tailored sections for the transportation of cartridges, binoculars and protective wear. The handcrafted kit also includes a beautifully made humidor and is lockable for extra security. Your Purdey shotguns, up to two of them, go in an exquisite, leather-trimmed stowage case between the rear seats. And of course there is a cabinet for spirits.

Bentley on Purdey shotguns: When placing an order for a new Purdey, the customer begins a process of hand-crafting that takes up to two years to complete. Barrel tubes are machined to within four thousandths of an inch and each tube is then filed by hand. Such attention to detail – and eye for quality design – makes Purdey the perfect match for Bentley.

2018 Bentley Continental GT3

Bentley has just introduced the third-generation Continental GT, which rides on a new platform (shared with the Porsche Panamera), uses a new W-12 engine, and employs design cues from the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car. Just like its predecessor, the new Conti GT is set to gain a range of versions, including a V-8-powered and higher performance Speed and Supersports variants. But while these are still under development, the new Continental GT has already made its public debut in motorsport clothes. Meet the second-generation Continental GT3, developed to replace the first-gen race car after four successful years on the race track.

Slated to hit the motorsport scene for the 2018 season, the new Continental GT3 uses the aluminum structure of the road car and most of its design cues. But much like its predecessor, its lighter, tipping the scales at “significantly less” than 2,866 pounds, and features a more aerodynamic body. The new Conti GT3 has big shoes to fill — the first-gen car scored 120 podiums and 45 wins across 528 races — and will attempt to do so starting with the opening round of the 2018 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup at Monza in April. Meanwhile, let’s have a closer look at what it brings to the table.

Continue reading to learn more about the Bentley Continental GT3.

What makes the Bentley Continental GT3 special

  • Based on production model
  • Aggressive bumper with race-spec aero
  • Vented engine hood
  • Wider fender flares
  • Side sill extensions
  • Massive rear wing
  • Race-spec diffuser
  • Lighter than street model
  • FIA-aprroved seats and roll-cage
  • Twin-turbo V-8 engine
  • 550 horsepower

2018 Bentley Continental GT3 - image 743814
“The new GT3 benefits from the coupe's redesigned body lines”

Obviously based on the third-generation Continental GT, the new GT3 benefits from the coupe’s redesigned body lines. Sportier, decidedly more modern, the new Conti GT is a more production friendly version of the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car and its new styling cues work well with the aerodynamic package of the race car. Up front, the GT3 looks like a Conti GT on steroids. However, the beefed-up elements retain the basic form of the production parts. The bumper for instance, has the same three-piece layout with the wide, trapezoidal vent in the middle. Granted, it’s far more aggressive than the stock bumper, but it’s nice to see that Bentley made efforts to keep the race car as closely related to the production model as possible.

But while the bumper finds its roots in the production car, there are several race-spec features that set it apart, such as the large splitter, the side-mounted canards, and an additional center element finished in green. Speaking of which, the main grille and the sides of the bumper also sport green accents. What’s more, most of the new aero elements in the bumper are made from exposed carbon-fiber. The wider fenders and the vented hood with quick-release pins rounds off the race-ready front fascia.

2018 Bentley Continental GT3 - image 743816
“Onto the sides, the GT3 is a more significant departure from the standard model”

Onto the sides, the GT3 is a more significant departure from the standard model. Not only the fenders are significantly wider, but the side skirts also gained big extensions and extra vents. There’s a big intake in the front fender, as well as additional vents atop the wheels. The standard mirrors have been replaced by thinner, aero-optimized elements. The quarter windows have also been covered and now host the fueling caps.

Around back, the Conti GT3 is a beautiful display. If you’re a fan of GT3-spec racing that is. The upper fascia is the only feature borrowed from the road car, including the new oval taillights. Above, the deck lid has a new hump with a vent toward the rear glass, but the real highlight is the massive wing. The posts are mounted on the rear fenders, while the actual wing sits pretty high above the deck lid, even when compared to other GT3 cars. Below, a massive twin diffuser with big vertical fins replaces the production bumper. Just like the front end, the rear fascia is highlighted by bright green details on the dark gray and black paint.

2018 Bentley Continental GT3 - image 743817
“Under the hood, the massive 6.0-liter W-12 in the road cars has been replaced by a new development of the 4.0-liter V-8”

As usual, there are no photos or information about the interior, but it’s safe to assume that the layout is based on the production model, but enhanced by motorsport-specific features. While the dashboard likely retains the production shape, all luxury amenities like leather and aluminum trim are gone. Race-spec features should include an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, FIA-approved seats, lightweight door panels from carbon-fiber, and a full roll-cage.

Under the hood, the massive 6.0-liter W-12 in the road cars has been replaced by a new development of the 4.0-liter V-8 in the previous Continental GT3. The unit sports a redesigned dry sump, intake, and exhaust systems. Bentley says that unrestricted power is “in excess of 550 horsepower,” but the final output will depending on the weight of the race-prepped vehicle.

The race car has already started a six-month test program ahead of the 2018 season and will complete test sessions in the United Kingdom, France, and Portugal. Upcoming development work also includes full 24-hour endurance race simulations.
