The next-gen BMW M3 is already in the works with a debut planned to happen sometime around the turn of the decade. That means there’s only a couple more years to enjoy the current M3 and more intense M3 CS. That CS essentially stands for weight loss, new exhaust, and new wheels, among other things. It’s not just the addition of carbon fiber and the shedding of a few pounds that makes the CS stand out, though. It’s the extra power output too, which accounts for an extra 28 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque. That brings total output figures up to 453 ponies and 443 pound-feet of torque; enough for a sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 174 mph. Of course, there’s no choice but to flick some paddles for shifting purposes as a real manual transmission has been left off the options list.

Be that as it may, the M3 CS is one mean, light, carbon-fiber-toting machine and it’s more than worthy of some screen time on your home or office computer. BMW is having to end production of the mighty M3 performance sedan due to emissions regulations that take effect in June of 2018. The new regulations set forth by the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure, require a gasoline particulate filter be installed on all new vehicles after the June deadline. Unfortunately for the M3, its underbelly doesn’t have the room needed for the large device. Rather than spending the money to rework the M3’s floor pan, BMW is simply ending production of the 425-horsepower legend.

It’s not all bad news, however, the two-door coupe version of the M3, the M4 will continue production and come with the new particulate filter, officially known as the Otto Particulate Filter. Collateral changes to the M4 include the discontinuation of its lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft in favor of a steel driveshaft with a smaller diameter.

While it is rather unfortunate the F80 generation M3 will cease production before June 1, 2018, BMW is already deep in development on its successor. Known as the G20 generation, the new M3 (and then M4) will ride on BMW’s new Cluster Rear Architecture that already underpins the new 5 Series. Not only will the new G20 produce (or at least better control) exhaust emissions, the new model should be better by about every measurable metric. Non-M models are reportedly coming with a reworked version of the current inline four- and six-cylinder turbocharged engines.

Better still, BMW is said to have a slew of new M and M-Performance models on the way, both for the new G20 chassis and for several other vehicles is its stable. In fact, the numbers are pegged at 11 new M models and 15 new M-Performance variants – all by 2020.

In the meantime, that means the current F80 M3 will see its value skyrocket. Those wanting the car will have to act quickly, while those looking for a pre-owned model will see resale values remaining high. That’s great news for current owners who want to unload their F80 M3, but bad news for someone looking to purchase. It seems both time and money are in short supply.

Of course, prices will undoubtedly drop once the new G20 M3 and M4 hit the market sometime around 2020. BMW has been rather quiet on specifics regarding the G20 M3’s performance, but we can expect at least marginal improvements from the current F80 car.

In its current form, the 2018 M3 uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder making as much as 444 horsepower in the DCT Competition Package edition. Torque is rated at 406 pound-feet. A seven-speed dual-clutch sends power to the rear wheels and helps the 3,600-pound sedan hit 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. Car & Driver recorded 0.98 g on their 300-foot skid pad, showing just how capable the sedan is at holding the road. Prices for such performance start around $64,500 for the DCT Competition Package and can crest near $90,000.

With Christmas literally being a few days away, automakers have started rolling out their holiday greetings for the masses. BMW’s M Division is the latest to do so with a holiday-themed ad that features a vehicle that was never sold to the public. We’ve seen it a handful of times over the years, but this is probably the first time Bimmer is using the pickup version of the BMW M3 E30 for any of its promotional videos. Consider it a treat then that BMW is doing it for the holidays. Merry Christmas, indeed!

If you’re not familiar with the BMW M3 E30 pickup, it’s because the German automaker never put it up in the market. History points to this particular vehicle as a skunkworks project created by BMW M all the way back in 1986 to serve a variety of purposes, including transporting parts and other work equipment. Unbelievably, BMW M continue to use the M3 pickup until 2012 before retiring it for good.

Five years later, the performance brand dusted off the M3-based model to serve as the start of this Christmas-themed commercial. The ad itself is pretty straight-forward. It starts with a mother and a daughter making final preparations for their Christmas decorations. The father is noticeably absent because he’s bringing home the Christmas three, all wrapped up in the M3 pickup’s bed. It turns out; dear ‘ol daddy had far too much fun power sliding the M3 pickup that he forgot about the tree at the back. Once he gets home, beaming with pride over his road exploits, he turns to see what was left of the Christmas tree. It wasn’t a pretty sight, and his daughter’s face has “disappointed” written all over it.

The vehicle started its life using a 2.0-liter engine sourced from the 320iS before being replaced by the 2.3-liter unit powering the M3 E30. The latter was capable of producing 200 horsepower, so it’s understandable for the dad to go a little crazy with it in the snow. If only he remembered there was a Christmas tree in the back…

PostHeaderIcon Bad News for BMW purists: Next M3 and M4 Could Go AWD

First introduced in 1985, the BMW M3 quickly became known as “the ultimate driving machine.” The German brand exploited the term for more than three decades now, but a lot of BMW enthusiasts agree that the newer M3 and M4 are no longer the driver’s car that the first generation cars used to be, mostly due to being loaded with too much technology and driver aids. Whether this is true or not is a matter of how you look at modern sports cars, but old-school gearheads won’t be happy to learn that the next-generation M3 and M4 could go all-wheel-drive.

The news comes from Car Magazine, which claims that the M3 is set to take the same path as the M5, which was recently unveiled with standard all-wheel-drive. Since the M3 and M4 share the same underpinnings, the two-door coupe will also distribute power to all corners. As BMW pointed it out a few months back, the new-generation M5 was first engineered as a traditional, RWD sedan. But the company soon realized that the M5 didn’t handle longitudinal acceleration, and it decided to go with an all-wheel-drive layout. With the next-generation M3 looking to push the envelope well beyond that of the current model, AWD is likely to become a viable option for the compact too.

No Need to Panic Yet

Although nearly all reports suggest that the M3 could go AWD, the switch might not be as radical as the M5’s. While the latter comes standard with all-wheel-drive, the M3 could get xDrive as an option. Which should keep diehard enthusiasts happy. However, with Audi offering standard Quattro systems in the RS4 and RS5, it wouldn’t be completely shocking for the M3 and M4 to become AWD-only cars. On the flipside, this move would leave the Mercedes-AMG C63 as the only high-performance, German-made premium compact with rear-wheel-drive. It’s definitely a tough decision. An AWD M3 will bring superior performance and handling but would put an end to three decades of rear-wheel-drive tradition. And needless to say, it would upset BMW purists.

The next-generation M3 and M4 are expected to carry on with a new version of the twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which could develop close to 500 horsepower. The eight-speed automatic could become the only transmission option if the compact switches to AWD. At the same time, if RWD remains an option, it could be restricted to a manual transmission.

The new M3 is expected to launch sometime in 2020. The next-generation 3 Series will probably arrive by the end of 2018.

Introduced in 2014, the latest-generation BMW M3 set new benchmarks in the premium compact sedan segment. However, things changed when Mercedes-Benz launched the AMG C63, which unlike the Bimmer still had a V-8 engine and arrived in dealerships with significantly more power. And while the M3 fell behind the competition in terms of performance, the M4 was enabled to keep up and even raise above its rivals thanks to the GTS and CS limited-edition models. Fortunately, the M3 also received the attention it deserves in 2017 with the CS package, a club sport-style upgrade that makes it more suitable for track use, but without taking it over the top with the extreme rear wing of the GTS.

Essentially an M4 CS with the extra door and the longer rear roof, the M3 CS is a slightly more practical proposition in the CS lineup. Not only it misses the roll-cage available with the coupe, it also provides seating for up to five people, which maintains it in the family car market. Of course, no one will really buy it as a family car, but it doesn’t force customers to use it a two-seater only. More good news comes from the availability department, as the M3 CS is slated to come to the United States. On the other, production will be limited to a little over 1,000 units, with less than half set to cross the pond to North America. And much like the M4 CS, it will be significantly more expensive than the the standard M3. But more about that in the review below.

Not surprisingly, the M3 CS is identical to the M4 CS, save for the 3 Series-specific features such as the extra rear doors and the longer roof. The fact that the presentation model is finished in Lime Rock Grey Metallic, the same color as the M4 CS introduction car, makes the similarities between the two Bimmers that much more evident. So we’re looking at the similar CS updates, which are heavily based on those on seen on the M4 GTS.

Up front, the sedan’s looks and aerodynamics were enhanced by means of a front splitter made from exposed carbon-fiber and a revised apron with larger intakes that improve engine and braking system cooling. The standard engine hood was ditched in favor of a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic unit with a massive bulge in the middle and additional vents. On top of looking more aggressive, it’s also around 25 percent lighter than that of the regular M3. The CS look is rounded off by black trim instead of chrome, which comes with the standard Shadow Line package.

Onto the sides, the CS retains the usual M3 design elements, but the same Shadow Line package adds black window trim, lower mirror caps and door handles. In addition, it rides on special forged, light-alloy wheels with a ten-spoke design borrowed from the M4 DTM race car. Finished in Orbit Grey Matt, they blend almost seamlessly with the exterior paint and probably provide a great contrast with the other color options.

Around back, there’s a Gurney lid spoiler made from carbon-fiber. The aerodynamic element, which helps reduce rear axle lift, is taken from the M4 CS. Although not as aggressive as the big wing seen on the M4 GTS, it’s better suited for the sedan’s classier, Club Sport look. The CS also shares the OLED taillights, the rear diffuser, and the carbon-fiber-reinforced (CFRP) diffuser with its coupe counterpart. The four exhaust pipes are made from stainless-steel.

As far as paint options go, the M3 CS is finished in Alpine White as standard. However, customers can also opt for either San Marino Blue Metallic, Lime Rock Grey Metallic (pictured), Frozen Dark Blue II Metallic or Black Sapphire Metallic.

All told, the M3 CS is nearly as aggressive as the bonkers M4 GTS, missing only the race-inspired rear wing. It’s by far the most aggressive iteration of the current 3 Series and it’s definitely more menacing to look at than the already iconic M3 CSL.

The interior of the M4 CS was transferred inside the sedan with all of its exclusive features. The cabin is almost entirely black, draped in Merino leather and Alcantara. The upper dash if wrapped in black leather with grey stitching, but the area above and around the center stack is dressed in Alcantara. Light gray “CS” lettering adds exclusivity to the dashboard. More light gray stitching is found around the glove compartment and trickles down into the center console, which features a good amount of Alcantara. The seats are the only features that aren’t completely black. Here, the black side bolsters are complemented by Silverstone center sections. That’s light grey with a dash of silver.

The seats are M sports units and are borrowed from the M3 Competition Package. The steering wheel is of the same variety and features exclusive, anthracite-colored Alcantara and a silver stripe at the 12 o’clock position. The door sills feature special strips with “M3 CS” lettering. Despite being a track-oriented model, the sedan is equipped with a full range of convenience features, including automatic climate control, a navigation system, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system. Unlike the M4 CS, the sedan doesn’t have a roll cage fitted in the back. So you get a bit more everyday practicality.

Just like the M4 CS, the M3 CS gets its juice from a beefed-up version of the twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six engine found in the standard sedan. Output was increased to 453 horsepower (460 PS) and 443 pound-feet of torque, which accounts for an extra 28 horses and 37 pound-feet over the regular M3. All that oomph goes to the wheels through the proven, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and enables the sedan to hit 60 mph from a standing start in 3.7 seconds, two tenths quicker than the stock model. Top speed increased from the standard 155-mph rating to 174 mph thanks to the M Driver’s Package, which comes standard with the CS badge.

The six-cylinder engine features BMW latest drivetrain technology, including high-precision direct injection, Valvetronic variable valve lift, and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing control. As a result, it has a maximum engine speed rated at 7,600, close to GT-spec race cars. The oil supply system is another technical highlight, having been designed with input from motorsport engineers. The magnesium oil pump keeps the engine lubricated under longitudinal and lateral forces of up to 1.4 g, enabling the M3 CS to tackle extreme driving maneuvers at the race track. The new exhaust pipe provides lower back-pressure for enhanced power, while a new system of flaps provide optimum feedback on the engine’s load state for a sporty exhaust note.

Just like the M4 CS, the sedan comes standard with the Adaptive M Suspension. This puts three modes at the driver’s disposal – Comfort, Sport, and Sport + — each using different damper and steering settings. There’s also an Active M Differential, a limited-slip unit that further enhances stability and traction. It’s pretty obvious that the M3 CS is largely an M3 Competition Package underneath, but there are a few extras to consider, including more rigid axles and revised double-joint front spring struts and five-link rear axle.

The forged wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires for increased grip, while stopping power is provided by BMW M compound brakes with four-piston calipers at the front and two-piston units to the rear. However, these can be updated to BMW M Carbon Ceramic brakes, which feature six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear.

There’s no word yet on whether the M3 CS completed blistering Nurburgring lap – the M4 CS did it in 7:38 minutes, but it’s safe to assume that the sedan was also tested on the German track. And I’m sure it would be almost as quick, which would put it on par with cars like the Lexus LFA and the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.

Pricing information for the M3 CS is not yet available, but BMW did say that order books will open starting May 2018. The German carmaker also said that production will be limited to approximately 1,200 units worldwide, with “approximately 550 units coming to the U.S.” It’s a bit awkward that production numbers aren’t specific at this point, but hey, I’m not here to comment on BMW’s marketing strategy. Expect the sedan to retail from around $100,000 before options, a hefty increase compared to the standard M3, which retails from $65,500.

Unlike BMW, Mercedes didn’t bother to make limited-edition versions of the AMG C63. At least not the kind that brings more power and improved aerodynamics to the table. However, because the C63 is available with two power outputs, one of which is significantly more powerful than the M3 CS, the Stuttgart-designed sedan qualifies as a solid competitor for this Bimmer. More specifically, while the standard C63 uses a 4.0-liter V-8 rated at 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, which is still more than the M3 CS, the C63 S has it engine uprated to 503 horses and 516 pound-feet of twist. The extra horsepower makes up for the lack of motorsport-style aerodynamic as they push the Merc to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, a tenth-second slower, but top speed is rated at 155 mph. But while you don’t get the performance and the extra features of the M3 CS, you do get an aggressive looking sedan with a fancy interior and state-of-the-art tech. What’s more, the AMG C63 S is significantly more affordable, retailing from $73,700.

Conclusion

With the M4 having already spawned GTS and CS versions, it was a bit surprising that the M3 didn’t get a limited-edition variant in all these years on the market. But BMW finally did the right thing and gave the sedan the higher performance treatment. It’s a bit late to the party, but at least the German firm didn’t completely ignore the nameplate. Granted, most higher performance upgrades are associated with the coupe version of the previous M3 generations, but the sedan is just as important and ignoring it won’t be good for business. The fact that the Mercedes-AMG C63 significantly more powerful than the stock M3 in both trim shouldn’t have been enough to motivate BMW to act in this direction, more so with Audi still not offering a sedan version of the RS4. But, as I said, better late than never. I’m still a bit disappointed that there’s no M3 GTS to talk about, but I can understand that a high winged sedan isn’t a priority for BMW right now. What matters is that the M3 CS is more exclusive and more track oriented than any of its competitors. And this should keep enthusiasts happy.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 BMW M3 CS Unveiled

BMW just unveiled its latest special edition for the M3. Dubbed the CS, the new German rocket seeks to combine everyday driveability and luxury with even greater performance potential courtesy of its M Division boffins.

Kicking it off is more muscle from the 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six-cylinder. Peak output is now rated at 453 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 443 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm, an increase of 28 ponies and 37 pound-feet respectively. Redline is set at 7,600 rpm. All told, the CS is both quicker and faster than the standard M3, doing the 0-to-60 mph shimmy in 3.7 seconds and topping out at an electronically limited 174 mph. Making the good noises is an M Sports exhaust system with special sound tuning exclusive to the CS model. Routing the muscle to the rear is a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox with launch control and paddle shifters.

Outside, you’ll find a generous helping of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), which was added to the roof, front splitter, rear diffuser, and Gurney flap, cutting as much as 110 pounds from the car’s curb weight. That makes it sprightly, especially with the unique tuning for the springs and dampers. Standard spec includes Adaptive M Suspension components, which offer a variety of driving modes ranging between Comfort and Sport. An Active M Differential was added as well. The wheel design was inspired by DTM racers, and come staggered at 20 inches in back and 19 inches in front. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires make the traction, while optional carbon ceramic brakes haul it down.

There’s new stuff inside as well, with Alacantara upholstery and two-tone Merino leather in Silverstone and black. M Sport seats, automatic climate control, and a Harman Kardon stereo keep it civil.

The 2018 BMW M3 CS will be offered globally, but is limited at 1,200 units total, only 550 of which will come stateside. Order books open May of 2018. Pricing is thus far unannounced.

1987 was a special year for BMW fans here in the US. That was the year the M3 first came to our shores. Since then, Bimmer’s resident performance sedan has carved up a legacy that’s without peer, so much so that we’re all getting a treat from BMW with the presentation of the super exclusive M3 30 Years America Edition at the 2017 SEMA Auto Show. It really doesn’t get as exclusive as this one because, quite literally, there will only be one of its kind in the world.

The M3 30 Years America Edition actually starts its life as a standard manual-transmission M3 that’s dressed up in BMW’s Competition Package. But, that’s where any semblance to a standard M3 ends. Everything else about it is exclusive to the theme of the car, which is to say that it received plenty of red, white, and blue treatment in both the exterior and interior. This is as all-American as a BMW M3 can get, at least to the point that bald eagle badges wouldn’t have been out of place in it. It’s unclear at this point how much BMW plans to sell the M3 30 Years America Edition for, though it did say that it will be available once the SEMA Auto Show ends. My money’s on it being auctioned off with the proceeds going to a charity here in the U.S., but don’t be surprised if Bimmer feels generous enough to simply raffle the sedan off. The latter would be an ideal scenario for folks like me because if it’s auctioned off, expect the bids to come hot and heavy, maybe even reach six figures under the best of conditions.

There are a lot of things to like about the BMW M3 30 Years America Edition, including the theme and how BMW went about it implementing it. The exterior is striking with the Frozen Red II Metallic shade. The inclusion of “II” in its nomenclature is intended to convey the paint’s exclusivity, which came to life at the hands of the talented people over at BMW Group Designworks. In addition, the M3 30 Years America Edition also gets a carbon fiber reinforced polymer roof, which also features the same Frozen Red Metallic II paint. More cosmetic goodies come in the form of a 30th Anniversary graphic located on the rear sunshade of the sedan. This particular addition is important to enhance the sedan’s one-off exclusivity and separate itself from every other M3 in the world today. Speaking of exclusivity, the one-off M3’s wheels are also of the super limited variety. The alloy wheels measure 19 inches in the front and 20 inches in the rear and are finished in an exclusive touch of gold. It’s the only set of wheels that will get this kind of treatment, so it’s in good company with the equally rare red paint finish on the body.

On the aerodynamic side of the upgrades, we get a good number of M Performance parts, none more prominent than the carbon fiber rear wing at the back. M Performance side skirts are also included, as are functional bits like the new exhaust system, titanium rear silencer, and on the suspension side of things, a completely new adjustable sports suspension until that feature red coil springs.

The exterior carries with it an extensive list of upgrades, but as good as that section got it from BMW, the M3’s interior is the real star of this show. If you’re digging the all-American theme of the M3, you’re going to dig the interior. Quite literally, there’s enough red, white, and blue surfaces in it to make Uncle Sam weep with pride.

Take the seats, for example. The feature a base Opal White surface, but instead of keeping it just that way, BMW added Mugello Red Merino stripes and Fjord Blue Merino sections to really bring out the patriotic theme of the interior. A 30th Anniversary graphic on the headrests is another nice touch and completing the whole setup are a few black leather appointments scattered throughout the cabin.

There are no significant engine upgrades on the M3 30 Years America Edition but with the car sporting the Competition Package, that means that the M3’s 3.0-liter inline-six engine gets an extra 14 horsepower from the standard unit, resulting in an output of 444 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

We’ll know soon enough exactly how much this one-off BMW M3 30 Years America Edition is going to cost, but for those who are looking to get a baseline amount, the standard M3 fitted with a Competition Package sells for $71,200. Considering its status as a one-off and the theme behind it, it’s almost a certainty that we’re looking at a price here that will exceed $100,000. Whatever it is, those who are interested will need to have their checkbooks in hand.

Drift cars are probably some of the most abused race machines out there (rally cars are pretty close, though). Between living at the rev limiter and bouncing off the barriers, these slideways stars are usually held together with little more than zip ties and dreams. Indeed, dents and bruises are marks of honor in the drift tribe – garage queens need no apply. And that’s why it makes sense to see this charred E36 Bimmer coming back from the dead for a little opposite lock glory, complete with a brand new charcoal exterior finish.

Apparently, this particular E36 was stuck in a garage fire, which singed the exterior and interior to a crisp. But hey, who needs flashy paint and silly carpets in a race car, right? Now, the Bimmer is back in the action, getting tail happy and making a little smoke of its own. Hilariously, the owner decided to keep the charred exterior as is. Maybe this is the new trend everyone will follow instead of the typical flat black rattle can jobs you see everywhere nowadays. Ditch the spray paint, and grab the blow torch. All we gotta say is – well done.

Earlier in 2017, we saw BMW launch a new limited-edition M4. It’s called the CS and slots between the standard M4 and the track-ready GTS. Essentially a GTS without the massive wing, the CS also marked the return of the famous badge that BMW used in the 1960s and 1970s. Not surprisingly, the M4 CS was very popular with BMW enthusiasts, which is why the German brand is also considering a sedan version. Naturally, it will be called the M3 CS.

The beefed-up M3 is not yet official, but the folks over at German outlet Bimmer Today claim that the four-door CS will arrive sometime in 2018. The source also says that the M3 CS will share underpinnings with its M4 counterpart, meaning that it will hit the street with the upgraded twin-turbo, six-cylinder engine rated at 460 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. This output will make the CS the most powerful M3 ever, placing it above the legendary E92-generation M3 GTS, which had 444 horses on tap. What’s more, it should be a tad quicker than the standard M3 with a 0-to-62 sprint of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 174 mph.

All things considered, I’d argue the 2017 New York International Auto Show turned out to be pretty decent. The list of debuts ended up including stuff that’s fast, stuff that’s fancy, and a few things that are actually kinda weird. Nevertheless, a few of the automakers in attendance didn’t really bring their A-game for 2017, including BMW. You see, the only new stuff propped up at the Bimmer booth this year was a couple sets of upgraded wheels.

That said, they are pretty nice wheels. First up are large multi-spoke rollers finished in silver and fitted to a BMW M4 Convertible. The silver color is nicely complemented by the drop-top’s Yas Marina Blue exterior, filling the flared fenders with purpose. Get them as part of the optional Competition Package.

Then there are dark, split five-spoke wheels shown on a scorching Austin Yellow M3. Finished in black, these rollers look awesome alongside the dark-colored trim on the sporty four-door, and come offered in a variety of sizes between 19 and 20 inches in diameter. The Bavarians call them 763M, and they come direct from the brand’s M tuning division.

As the calendar year draws to an end, the Essen Motor Show comes to conclude the year of European motor shows with numerous tuning, motorsport, and track-race production models. The organizers expect more than 300,000 visitors to come to the exhibition halls at Essen’s Grugapark, which will have a wide array of cars and aftermarket products on display, including many from BMW.

The German automaker will bring its latest M Performance parts to Essen, as well as eight vehicles, including the M240i Convertible and the M2 Safety Car. The public will also be able to demonstrate their racing talent at the “DTM M4 Driving Simulator” by following in the tracks of Marco Wittmann, the newly crowned DTM champion.

As for the actual performance parts, BMW will introduce a handful of upgrades for the M3 and M4. First up, there’s carbon rear wing made entirely of carbon-fiber with the struts sporting M motorsport stripes in blue, red, and violet, and “Performance” lettering on the sides of the blade. The coupe and sedan will also get an M Performance suspension that will enable drivers to adjust ride height between five and 20 mm (0.2 and 0.8 inches) via a spring plate on the front and rear spring struts. The coil springs are painted red for a motorsport-inspired look. Both the carbon wing and the suspension system will be offered starting summer 2017.

The M3 and M4 will also get something new under the hood. Unfortunately, I’m not talking about power upgrades, but the new carbon engine cover should make a few enthusiasts happy. Made from hand-crafted, high-quality carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, it will give the M3 and M4 a race-inspired look under the lid.

The BMW booth will also showcase the brand’s new M Performance Accessories, including an Alcantara steering wheel with carbon trim and race display, gear selector lever and carbon handbrake grip with Alcantara bellows, 19-inch, double-spoke 405 M Bicolour alloy wheels, black matt rear diffuser, and carbon tailpipe trims. All these parts will be exhibited on an upgraded M240i Convertible model.

PostHeaderIcon A New Round Of Recalls Are Coming For Certain BMW M Models

Recalls are a hassle, but when one recall leads to another recall, that’s when things get annoying. Unfortunately, that’s the predicament certain owners of the BMW M2 Coupe, M3 Sedan, M4 Coupe, and M4 Convertible are now facing after BMW North America announced a new round of recalls for 2015 to 2017 model years of the aforementioned models, all because BMW dealerships messed up on a repair involving the rear differential during a previous recall last January 2016.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW dealers used the same rear sub-frame bolts to replace the rear differential on the M cars. The problem with that is that these bolts were designed to be used only as one-time-use fasteners, as per the automaker’s own vehicle assembly process. If they’re used more than once, there’s a good chance that the “clamp force may not be achieved when torquing down the bolts,” resulting in the possibility of them loosening as they wear out. When that happens, the car’s handling and control could be compromised, which could then lead to the possibility of a crash taking place.

All told, 66 units are potentially affected by the new recall, including five M2 Coupe made from May 31 to June 20, 2016; 32 M3 Sedans manufactured from June 17, 2014 to June 13, 2016; 26 M4 Coupes built from May 2, 2014 to June 14, 2016; and three M4 Convertibles assembled from May 29, 2015 to May 27, 2016. Fortunately, no incidents have been reported concerning the condition of the affected models.

It must be said though that the NHTSA has absolved BMW dealerships of any blame for the fresh round of recalls. Apparently, BMW didn’t give specific instructions to use new rear sub-frame bolts, which could’ve led to dealership engineers using the same bolts to replace the differential.

The recall is expected to begin on October 24, 2016. In the days leading up to it, BMW will be notifying affected owners and certain dealerships of the impending recall. The latter is expected to replace the affected rear sub-frame bolts with new bolts without owners incurring any costs.

BMW released detailed specs of the new M3 and M4 Competition Package, tarted up version of the standard sports saloon and coupe which come with a little bit more power and a whole lot more M goodness. The Competition Pack models get 450 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque.

But extra power is only a small part of what you get from BMW M3 and M4 Competition Package. Other highlights include a revised Adaptive M Suspension featuring new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, along with reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+), re-tuned Active M Differential on the rear axle and DSC Dynamic Stability Control, and 20-inch M alloy wheels with exclusive multi-spoke M styling shod with 265/30 R20front and 285/30 R20 rear tires.

As for the visual features, the M3 and M4 Competition Package models come with  M sports exhaust system with black chrome tailpipes, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim, BMW kidney grille, side gills and model badge on the tail. These are complemented inside with special lightweight M sports seats and seatbelts with woven-in BMW M stripes cap off an extremely sporty interior ambience. BMW M fans love this kind of little details.

Prices for these upgraded cars start from (UK) £59,595 for the M3 Saloon, £60,055 for the M4 Coupe, and £63,350 for the M4 Convertible.

In 2013, BMW introduced the F80 M3, the fifth-generation of its most iconic sports coupe. For the first time, the compact M car was split into two models wearing distinct badges. While the sedan continued to wear the M3 tag, the two-door ditched the M3 Coupe moniker in favor of the M4.

But, that wasn’t the only important change that came with the new generation.

The Germans also put an end to the V-8-powered M3, opting to replace the naturally aspirated unit with a twin-turbo, inline-six in the new M3 and M4. The switch was made in order to improve fuel economy and alleviated by lighter cars. As it is always the case with such radical changes, the downsizing was received with mixed feelings. Not surprisingly, most M3 enthusiasts criticized the move, claiming that the nameplate has been stripped of its heritage.

Nearly three years have passed since the new M3/M4 entered production, and both the coupe and sedan have already received their mid-cycle facelifts. BMW is already working on the next-generation model, but until the sixth-generation arrives, Munich has put together a four-minute video that looks back on the challenges it had to overcome in developing the fifth-gen cars. The brand also talks about the M3/M4’s successful DTM campaign, as well as the more recently introduced M4 GTS. If you’re a BMW fan, this is a video you shouldn’t miss!
