The second-generation BMW X1 stormed into our lives only two years ago, but the German automaker is already preparing an updated model, as recent spy shots of a test mule X1 have shown. The prototype crossover is heavily wrapped in swirly camouflage, but we can still make out familiar elements of the model. The lack of meaningful updates lends credence to the belief that the updated front-wheel-drive-based crossover is in line for nothing more than a few nips here and a few tucks there.

PostHeaderIcon A Chinese Property Developer is Offering a BMW If You Buy Its Property

A Chinese property developer is offering a BMW 3 Series or a BMW X1 to anyone who buys a three-bedroom unit or townhouse at its development property in Shanghai. The developer, China Merchants Shekou Industrial Zone Holdings Co., is pulling out all the stops to lure buyers in the wake of lending curbs and funding constraints that have squeezed their finances. The giveaway is just one example of the lengths Chinese property developers are going to for the sake of boosting sales.

PostHeaderIcon Wallpaper of the Day: 2016 BMW X1

When BMW introduced the X1 compact crossover, it forced Audi to create the Q3 and Mercedes the GLA. When BMW introduced the second-gen model for 2016, it forced both automakers to revamp their respective contenders as well. Needless to say, the X1 is the leader of this luxury segment, and that’s why we’ve decided to make it the wallpaper of the day. Built on a controversial FWD architecture, It’s offered with a 2.0-liter inline-four that’s good for just 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It’s nothing to write home about, but it does deliver a 60-mph sprint in 6.3 seconds, which isn’t bad. With that said, we’ve handpicked our favorite wallpaper and included a gallery at the bottom of the page. Take all the wallpapers you want – they’re all free to use as long as you’d like!

PostHeaderIcon BMW X1 By Dahler

The BMW X1 was never meant to be a record-breaking speed freak, but as is the case with most tuners, there’s never a bad time to turn it into one. Swiss tuner Dahler knows this better than anybody else. It’s been around for 30 years and has a long list of tuning products for Bavaria’s finest, and its most recent tuning project is for the aforementioned X1. The program comes with a range of upgrades for the crossover’s exterior, interior, and engine. It’s a relatively simple program, but the desired results are there for the taking.

Exterior Enhancements

“There are plenty of aero part to choose from”

It doesn’t take a lot to drive up the sporty styling of the BMW X1. The crossover already appeals in that regard, but Dahler is determined to squeeze every ounce of sportiness out of the X1. The tuner’s upgrades to the exterior are a good example of that. There are plenty of aero part to choose from. A front spoiler is available, as is a rear wing. There’s also a roof spoiler, a rear diffuser, side skirts, and exterior mirrors that can be optioned of to get a carbon look. You don’t have to get all of these options for your X1, but the fact that you can choose which ones you like should create some variety on how the crossover will look with the chosen aero bits in place.

Interior Enhancements

2015 - 2018 BMW X1 By Dahler - image 764407
“Likewise, the interior options available for the X1 focuses on individualization above everything else”

Likewise, the interior options available for the X1 focuses on individualization above everything else. If you want the cabin of your crossover to drown in leather, Dahler can do that for you. If you want it in Alcantara, it can do that too. There are also special sports leather steering wheels to choose from. You can even order a side of carbon inlays on the steering wheel to go with more carbon interior trim and parts, shift knobs, high-quality aluminum pedals, and a choice of seats, be it the bucket type or the more performance-oriented race version. There is no shortage of options to choose from, at least as far as Dahler is concerned.

Drivetrain Enhancements

2015 - 2018 BMW X1 By Dahler - image 764418
“In true Dahler fashion, the Swiss tuner’s engine upgrade program for the X1 covers all engine options available to the crossover”

Once you’ve settled in on the kind of exterior and interior upgrades that you want, you can turn your focus on the kit’s main event: the engine upgrades. In true Dahler fashion, the Swiss tuner’s engine upgrade program for the X1 covers all engine options available to the crossover. Gas-powered versions like the sDrive and xDrive 18i, for example, has a kit that can increase the engine’s output from 140 horsepower to 158 horsepower.

If you own an xDrive 20i or sDrive, you can get as much as 223 horsepower, a 31-horsepower increase from the standard version’s output of 192 horsepower. There’s also a program available for the xDrive25i, one that pushes the engine’s output to 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

Diesel versions of the X1 aren’t left in the cold. The X1 16d, for example, gets an increase in output to 135 horsepower, 19 more horses than the standard version. The 150-horsepower xDrive 18d gets an extra 24 horses to bring its total output up to 174 horsepower. Then there’s the xDrive20d, which happens to be the best-selling model of the entire range. If you own one, you can go to Dahler and raise its output up to 226 horsepower, up from the standard output of 190 horsepower. Last but certainly not least is the range-topping xDrive25d bi-turbo diesel unit. Think 231 horsepower in this version is enough? Dahler can raise it up to 260 horsepower.

The upgrades on all the engines are accomplished through software remapping. That means that you won’t have to worry about some losing components of your engines. Everything is done through the power of computers and the results, well, they certainly speak for themselves.

Beyond these major upgrades, the Swiss tuner is also offering an in-house braking system, transmission options that include a limited slip differential with a shorter axle ratio, and a few exhaust options that are tailored specifically for the X1.

Final Thoughts

2015 - 2018 BMW X1 By Dahler - image 764406

There’s no word yet on how much a full-blown tuning kit costs, but history suggests that if you want to get one, you’re going to need to prepare a little more than $10,000 to give your X1 the full Dahler tuning treatment.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X1 LWB

BMW’s recent move toward mass appeal has struck again. The German automaker has announced at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show a long wheelbase version of its all-new X1 crossover. The X1 LWB, as it’s called, grows by 3.1 inches to accommodate more rear-seat legroom – something blazingly popular in the Chinese culture. And yes, the X1 LWB is built exclusively for the Chinese and within a Chinese factory.

This compiles atop BMW’s move to redefine the X1. For the 2016 model year, the X1 was completely redesigned with a new architecture, drivetrain layout, and aesthetic design details. The crossover moves from its original rear-wheel drive, longitudinally oriented drivetrain and platform borrowed from the 1 Series sedan to the FWD platform borrowed from the 2 Series Active Tourer.

While we could harp on BMW’s decision to adopt FWD architectures all day, the automaker seems to be confident average consumers won’t (and don’t) know the difference. That will probably hold the truest in this lengthened crossover built for comfort rather than spirited driving. Wealthy Chinese drivers, after all, are smitten with the living room-like qualities of long vehicles. That’s clearly evident by the number of long wheelbase vehicles debuting at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show.

The X1 LWB will be built by BMW’s China partner, BMW Brilliance’s Tiexi plant in Shenyang. That plant is already familiar with the X1, as it built roughly 140,000 examples for the first-generation X1. For those outside China actually curious about the X1 LWB, don’t get too excited. The stretched crossover is only available within the People’s Republic. If you still want all the details on BMW’s newest crossover, keep reading.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X1 Hybrid

BMW has been busy revamping its lineup, and back in September of last year, we finally got details of the second-generation BMW X1. The X1 joined other front-wheel drive models like the 2 Series Active Tourer and the 2 Series Grand Tourer in BMW’s Lineup. We’ve been expecting to see a plug-in hybrid variant of the new BMW X1, and finally, we have received some spy shots what we believe to be just that doing some cold-weather testing.

The interesting thing about these spy shots is that the car is still sporting a little bit of camo, despite the fact that it should be nearly identical to the standard BMW X1. We expect the new plug-in version to go by the xDrive30e moniker, and it should share the same drivetrain as the 2 Series Active Tourer Hybrid. This means that the gasoline engine will power the front wheels at all times, while a small motor is available to power the rear axle.

Given the current state of camo on this plug-in, we expect it to officially debut sometime in the very near future. Until then, however, let’s take a closer look at the pictures we have today. Who knows, maybe we’ll spot a few differences compared to the non-hybrid model that is already on sale.

BMW X2 Render

Just a hint from BMW that they might be working on a small crossover called the X2 was enough reason for designer X-Tomi to break out his best version of Photoshop and render the car you see here. The BMW X2 he’s come up with uses the 2016 X1 as the base and combines it with the Sport Activity look of the X4/X6 series.

While the idea of a coupe-like compact crossover is intriguing, we have to say a smaller X4 is not something that makes much sense. If you are into this Sport Activity thing and you want a big car, you get the X6. If you like that bodystyle in a more compact package, you go and buy the X4.

A smaller X2 model would be like a less practical X4 with no apparent advantage in terms of efficiency that would justify it. That said, BMW is confident that they can keep introducing new niches and people will buy what they have to offer regardless of how pointless, or how ugly, that offering might be. It will sell in huge numbers just because it’s a new BMW.

So to sum up, what you get with the BMW X2 is an X1 with almost no headroom at all in the back, a tiny boot, and probably a harsh ride because it is supposed to be “sporty”.

BMW X1 M

Following the recent debut of the 2016 BMW X1, independent designer X-Tomi took it upon himself to render an M version of the car, even though BMW has no immediate plans for such a thing. Tomi’s BMW X1 M looks pretty interesting though. It should definitely be considered by BMW’s top brass.

The idea of an X1 M is not at all outlandish. Even before the 2016 BMW X1 actually launches into the market, there are talks about a hot, 300bhp version with M Sport kit, M wheels and suspension, and M’d up interior. BMW needs only to take one step further than this and they will have an X1 M, boasting something like 360 horsepower and a bespoke body kit rather than just some M Sport body components. It’s not difficult really.

The question is though, is there a market big enough for a hotted-up X1 to justify the cost of development and marketing. For that BMW can study the market performance of Mercedes-Benz’ GLA 45 AMG. If after a few more years they haven’t dropped the car yet then the Bavarians can safely go ahead and make the X1 M. The rendering of the car sure does look good enough to warrant at least some research.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X1 M

BMW just introduced the 2016 BMW X1 this week, and while the next-gen crossover will surely bring a bump in sales, it hardly does anything to draw in enthusiasts that have always flocked to the German brand. Because we’re betting that it’s coming, we conjured up a rendering of a sportier version of BMW’s new baby crossover, the BMW X1 M. At this point, there aren’t any solid rumors suggesting that an X1 M could become a reality, but with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG and Audi RS Q3 out there, such a model would definitely make sense in the BMW lineup.

With that being said, this is all just pure speculation using common design cues associated with the BMW M brand. If (and that’s a big if) BMW is planning on building the X1 M, it probably wouldn’t enter into production until late 2016 at the soonest, considering that M models usually show up about a year after the standard model and the X1 goes on sale this fall. For now, though, at least we have something to dream about.

PostHeaderIcon BMW Releases Details On Second-Gen X1

BMW has just dropped cover on the second generation of its X1 crossover, and it promises to deliver a roomier interior, a more efficient drivetrain, and lots of innovative technology.

For its U.S. launch, the X1 xDrive28i will be the exclusive model on offer, featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque routed to all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. A sprint to 60 mph will take 6.3 seconds. An M Sport package will be offered later this year, and will come with a new steering wheel, sport suspension, and sport seats.

On the outside, you’ll find a restyled aesthetic with a taller, more rugged stance. The seating position is also raised, giving the X1 a more traditional SUV feel.

Inside, things have been redesigned as well, offering greater head- and legroom, not to mention more space for cargo. Technology is enhanced via an optional 8.8-inch control display with a touchpad controller that integrates BMW Online, BMW Apps, Remote Services, and Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information. There is also an available 6.5-inch screen.

Other options include full-LED adaptive headlights and the latest BMW heads-up display, as well as a slew of safety-oriented driver’s aides like Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beams, Frontal Collision Warning, and Speed Limit Info.

Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Look for our full write-up soon.

It’s been six years since BMW stormed the mini SUV segment with the X1, and the German automaker has just launched the second-generation version of the car that made Audi and Mercedes-Benz create the Q3 and GLA, respectively.

Introduced in 2009 as the brand’s smallest crossover and fourth SUV after the X3, X5, and X6, the X1 was praised for its powerful engines, sedan-like dynamics, and good fuel economy. A commercial success with more than 700,000 units sold globally through 2014, the second-gen X1 has pretty big shoes to fill and it’s looking to try and best its predecessor with a new exterior design, a revamped interior, and updated drivetrains.

More importantly, the X1 has just become the first BMW-badged SUV to use a front-wheel-drive architecture, borrowing the UKL platform from the Mini Cooper. The X1 joins the 2 Series Active Tourer and 2 Series Gran Tourer to form BMW’s new family of FWD vehicles, which will expand to other nameplates in the future as well.

We’re still a few months away from seeing the 2016 X1 on auto show and dealership floors, but BMW released just enough information on its brand-new crossover. Keep reading to find out more about the second-generation X1.

Updated 05/27/2016: The BMW X1 was named as a Top Safety Pick+ but the IIHS. Check out the Safety section below for all the details.

PostHeaderIcon 2016 BMW X1 Gets Tested Everywhere: Spy Shots

With the second-generation X1 less than a year away from its official unveiling, BMW is hard at work testing pre-production prototypes of the car in various locations around the world. In fact, two similarly camouflaged X1s were shot by spy photographers on the same day – one doing cold weather testing in Northern Sweden and the other one being thrashed around a sunny Nurburgring Nordschleife.

As most of you know, the 2016 X1 is BMW’s second FWD-based car, after the 2 Series Active Tourer (and Gran Tourer, more recently). Don’t think that all versions will be FWD though, as the U.S. is expected to only get xDrive all-wheel-drive models, and top of the range versions will be AWD regardless of the market. That said, the new all-wheel-drive system will still behave primarily like a FWD system, with power being diverted toward the rear axle only during hard acceleration or when the rear tires begin to lose traction. The 2016 X1 is likely to use a classic Haldex differential to handle the output going to the rear wheels, so expect the model to handle pretty much like a larger Mini Countryman, to which it’s related anyway.

Though not officially confirmed, BMW could be also working on a “five-door-coupe” version of the X1, to be named either X2 or Urban Cross, depending on which source you believe. More on that when and if BMW starts testing the model on public roads.
