PostHeaderIcon Best Used 2016 SUV for Fuel Economy

The market trend is quickly shifting from sedans to crossovers and SUVs. However, SUVs have two major cons when compared to their segment counterparts – high retail price and poor fuel economy. Even though they are a practical choice thanks to additional cabin and cargo space, it’s a little difficult for everyone to afford an SUV. So why not go for a used SUV instead? You don’t take the depreciation hit that first owner does, and since SUVs are built to last a lifetime, you can get an almost-new SUV at half the original price.

Now that we’ve planted this seed in your head, let’s have a look at the best used SUVs from 2016 with high fuel efficiency.

PostHeaderIcon 10 Best Handling Crossovers on the Market

Crossovers are vehicles designed to look like they can go off-road, but really be at their best on the road. Sure, some can do light off-roading, but realistically you won’t want to stray too far from the blacktop or the occasional bumpy gravel backroad.

To this end it’s not trivial to know which of these 4×4-aping high riders are best out on the open (and sometimes twisty) road, since it’s where they will spend most of their time. But don’t go thinking that they are on par with more conventional car shapes, because their higher center of gravity and usually higher mass will affect handling.

Safety is at the top of buyers’ lists these days, but what many don’t think about when browsing lists of cars rated with safety stars is that good, predictable road manners and sharp handling are one of the biggest safety features a car can have, since they allow the driver to avoid crashing in the first place.

And while crossovers may give occupants a feeling of extra safety when they’re on board, their poor road manners bring this into question.

Here’s a list of the 10 best handling high-riding vehicles ever made.

PostHeaderIcon Alpina XD3

Noted BMW tuner Alpina has unveiled its latest creation, the Alpina XD3. The program is based on the BMW X3 crossover, and in true Alpina fashion, it offers all-encompassing upgrades that cover all important bases for Bimmer’s popular crossover. The result is a vehicle that can give some of today’s more powerful SUVs a serious run for their money.

PostHeaderIcon The iX3 Concept Previews BMW’s EV Technology of the Future

BMW has been promising to expand its electric car lineup for quite a few years now, but the Germans are still offering just one model, the i3. But things will change in 2018 when BMW introduces the iX3, its first all-electric SUV. Based on the X3, the EV was unveiled as a concept car at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show and will go into production under the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture in Shenyang, China.

PostHeaderIcon Report: BMW To offer the BMW X3 M With a Competition Package

The next-generation BMW X3 M is coming, and it’s coming with a lot of surprises in tow. One of these surprises comes in the form of a Competition Package for the performance SUV, making the X3 M the first M Division SUV to get the Competition Package treatment. Details are still sketchy on the contents of the package, but according to a report from Motor.es, it will come with more power and sharper handling for the X3 M. That’s not much to go by, sure, but if those two elements are part of the equation, this package immediately becomes something that we can all look forward to.

PostHeaderIcon One Minute News: BMW Teases the iX3 Concept and It Doesn’t Have the X3’s Grille

The BMW iX3 is BMW’s first pure electric EV that’s built around the brand’s “fifth-generation electric powertrain.” The concept is said to have extended range, or at least 200 miles (guess that’s extended to the Germans) and has officially been teased for the first time. We thought we had seen in all its glory in spy shots previously but thanks to this teaser we can at least say that the grille is new compared to anything we’ve seen so far. It should still be heavily based on the X3 SUV with some minor changes here and there. It will be followed by the i4, the I Vision Dynamics, and the iNext crossover.

PostHeaderIcon We Could See the BMW iX3 at the Beijing Motor Show

BMW has been far from quiet about its plans to electrify damn near anything with four wheels and a BMW badge, with models like the BMW iNEXT, i4 (based on the i Vision Dynamics,) and the iX3 planned to show their production-ready faces this year. As it turns out, the iX3 could very well be the first of the three that we get to see and it could happen at the Beijing Auto Show in China.

PostHeaderIcon Alpina Works Over the BMW X3 In All the Right Ways!

As is the case every year, Alpina is headed to the Geneva Motor Show with a fresh tune of a new BMW model. This year, the new X3 gets the honor of the German tuner’s time, and once again, Alpina didn’t disappoint. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Alpina XD3. It’s a handful in more ways than one, which is typically the case when it’s Alpina we’re talking about. After all, this is the same tuner that gave us the B4 Biturbo, the B7 xDrive, and most recently, the B6 xDrive Gran Coupe BMW CCA Edition.

“A big part of this program is the aerodynamic body kit that includes a new front bumper that also happens to have the word “Alpina” on the front lip”

As you might expect, Alpina put in some work to give the X3 a new look. A big part of this program is the aerodynamic body kit that includes a new front bumper that also happens to have the word “Alpina” on the front lip. There’s something to be said for bumpers and lip spoilers that help give a car a sportier and more aggressive look. That’s the case here. The rear bumper is also new. It’s not as prominent as its counterpart in the front, but it does provide a good aesthetic balance with the X3’s quad exhaust setup. A new set of 22-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels complete the exterior upgrades. The interior also gets its share of upgrades, none more prominent than the Alpina steering wheel that’s now sitting in front of the driver.

“The interior also gets its share of upgrades, none more prominent than the Alpina steering wheel that’s now sitting in front of the driver.”

It goes without saying that engine upgrades sit at the heart of every Alpina program for a BMW. The tuner didn’t veer away from tradition with the XD3 as the crossover benefits from a hearty slice of engine tuning that results in an output of 338 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque coming out of right-hand versions of the X3’s 3.0-liter six-cylinder bi-turbo engine. This version allows the XD3 to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds, making it 1.4 seconds quicker than the Porsche Macan Diesel S. Customers can also opt for the left-hand drive variant and its more powerful 3.0-liter quad-turbo diesel unit. In this case, the output increases to 384 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel the XD3 from an idle position to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 165 mph.

“The output increases to 384 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel the XD3 from an idle position to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds”

All these components paint a picture of what Alpina is capable of. What’s more impressive is that the X3, on its own, is already an impressive piece of machinery. It’s engaging to drive and has one of the best chassis of any SUV in its segment. It says a lot of Alpina’s capability as a BMW tuner when it can turn what is already a great car and turn it into something better.

PostHeaderIcon Watch this BMW X3 M40i Hit Top Speed on the Autobahn!

If you’re wondering about the capabilities of the 2018 BMW X3 M40i, you’re going to need to watch this video. It’s not often for us here in the U.S. to see a car like the X3 M40i go all-out on the German Autobahn so when there’s an opportunity to watch what it’s like, we’re going to take advantage of it.

The video, which was posted by AutoTopNL, shows the X3 M40i in a standstill position before the driver pushes the pedal to the metal. Just like that, the X3 bursts out of the gate — notice the driver’s head go back? — and before you can even comprehend what’s going on, the crossover is already pushing 100 kmh (62 mph). The speed rapidly increases to 112 kmh (69 mph), 152 kmh (94 mph), and 183 kmh (114 mph) in a matter of seconds. Eventually, the X3 M40i hits a top speed of 260 kmh (161.557 mph) before oncoming traffic forced the driver to ease up on the pedal. A few minutes later, he goes on another blast and once again, he hits 260 kmh before eventually deciding to slow it down.

The video tells us a few things about the X3 M40i. One, it’s fast. Two, it’s really fast. Three, it’s fast enough to actually eclipse the electronically limited top speed of 250 kmh (155 mph). Now, this likely means that the X3 M40i in the video had its top speed limiter removed, which allowed it to hit the 260 kmh. Still, the run is impressive for a crossover that “only” has 360 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque coming out of its 3.0-liter straight-six engine.

Kind of makes you wonder what an X3 M is going to pull off if the M Performance version — the X3 M40i — is already capable of giving us goosebumps.

PostHeaderIcon BMW Recalling 1 Million Cars in the U.S. over Fire Risk

BMW is recalling a whopping one million vehicles in North America over two separate issues involving fire risks. Both recalls include cars produced from 2006 to the 2011 model years. One recall covers 670,000 3 Series models from 2006 to 2011 model years, while the second recall is issued for 740,000 cars from 2007 to 2011 model years. The latter includes the 128i, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and Z4 models. Although these figures amount to more than 1.4 million units, BMW says the recalls overlap and cover about one million examples. Nearly all cars have been sold in the United States, while about 15,000 are from Canada. The recalls may expand to other countries in the future, but no specific announcement has been made as of this writing.

The first recall for the 3 Series models only will address a wiring issue for heating and air conditioning system. According to the company’s report for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the systems may overheat and could increase the risk of a fire in the car. BMW has reportedly been monitoring the issue since 2008 and has made some improvements in 2011, but some incidents from 2015 and 2016, which led to injuries, prompted a mass recall. The second recall is about a valve heater issue that may cause damage to the engine compartment. No injuries or crashes related to this problem have been reported so far. All cars involved will have their wiring harnesses and valve heaters replaced at BMW dealers, free of charge.

Continue reading for the full story.

Why it matters?

Recalls have become an important part of the auto industry in recent decades and, unfortunately, some issues have caused serious crashes, injuries, and even fatalities. So it’s not surprising that the German brand has been monitoring these problems for quite a few years a now and decided to have a big recall before more incidents and injuries are reported. If you own a 128i, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5 or Z4 vehicle built for the 2006 to 2011 model years, make sure you check with the NHTSA and your local dealer for a checkup and fix. Lives may be at stake here, so don’t take any risks.

PostHeaderIcon TopSpeed’s Top 5 Physics-Defying Performance Crossovers And SUVs

Technology has a very strange habit of turning the impossible (or at the very least, the improbable) into reality. This is especially true in the automotive world, where seemingly contradictory attributes manage to find a happy middle ground with surprising regularity. Case in point – the performance crossover and SUV segment. Once a body style relegated to utility, the modern tall-bodied, cargo-tastic crossover or SUV can now be had with a heavy dose of speed as well, apparently defying the laws of physics with mammoth grip and absurd levels of power. These days, it doesn’t matter if a model is heavy and huge – add the right parts, and it’ll be quick as well.

It’s a combination that seems to be growing in popularity, with a nice assortment of options available across the market. As such, we’ve collected five of the best right here for your perusal. Each offers a decent amount of cargo space, high levels of luxury, and the option for performance as well, all for a price tag around $70,000 (give or take). Our picks look like this – BMW X3 M, Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, Mercedes-AMG GLC63, Porsche Macan Turbo, and Land Rover Range Rover Sport. We’ve got the lowdown on each right here, so read on for more info. And don’t forget to post your favorite in the comments section below!

PostHeaderIcon TopSpeed’s Top 5 Luxury Compact Crossovers

When it comes to the U.S. automotive market, compact crossovers are cleaning up. The segment continues to see unprecedented growth, even with a huge variety of options already on offer. The appeal of the luxury compact crossover is multifaceted, mixing a “go anywhere, do anything” attitude with comfort and inherent driveability. Luxury compact crossovers are practical and spacious, without going overboard in terms of exterior dimensions, improving fuel efficiency and maneuverability over larger SUVs. Inside, there are amenities aplenty without breaking the bank, while the high seating position provides ample views of the road ahead. And while better suited for mall crawling rather than rock crawling, luxury compact crossovers still get that “off-roader” style, plus AWD when the weather turns sour. And of course, the extra room in the rear supports a range of lifestyles, whether its kid hauling for a family, or gear running for active outdoorsy activities. There are even performance options, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Boil it down, and the philosophy goes something like this – mix equal parts practicality, comfort, and road presence, then spread evenly on a tall-bodied package. But where to start? To help you navigate this seemingly bottomless sea of possibilities, we’ve collected facts and figures from five of the best entries in the segment, including the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Jaguar F-Pace, and Mercedes-Benz GLC Class. Read on for the lowdown.

PostHeaderIcon Like the BMW X3? We’ve Got Your Wallpapers Right Here!

The X3 has been on the market for 14 years as of 2018, and in its first two generations, its saw amazing success. 2018, however, brings about the third-gen model and BMW has somehow managed to make the X3 even better, with clear intentions to add greatly to the current 1.5 million X3 registrations on record. And, that’s saying a lot considering it has to compete against some pretty tough models. The Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC class aren’t exactly models to sneeze at, but the X3 is coming to the party with more under its belt than ever, including a 355-horsepower, 369 pound-food monster of an inline-six that can be found exclusively in the M40i. As such, the competition has a lot to worry about, and we’re mighty impressed.

Even in base form, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder offers up a decent 248 ponies and 258 pound-feet, enough to get it to 60 mph in six second flat while topping out at 130 mph. Meanwhile, it’s better-equipped brother hits the same benchmark in 4.6 seconds – that’s 0.2 seconds faster than the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 and 1.4-seconds faster than the 3.0-liter-equipped Audi Q5. On top of that, it has the modern looks necessary to stand out (no more round fog lights, either) and a pretty plush interior if you ignore the cheapish aluminum trim. Of course, a real man would opt for the ambient lighting package, but don’t worry we won’t judge 😉 With that said, we’ve put together a few of our favorite shots that will make perfect wallpapers for all of you X3 fans out there!

PostHeaderIcon How Does The New BMW X3 Stack Up Against The Competition?

One of the pioneers of the compact luxury SUV space has returned with a new look and new performance credentials. Yes, 14 years after breaking into the SUV landscape, the BMW X3 is back with a vengeance, armed with a new exterior, a redesigned interior, plenty of powertrain options to choose from. Most importantly the X3 shows confidence in its ability to stand toe-to-toe with notable rivals like the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes GLC-Class, as well as upstart hotshots like the Jaguar F-Pace and the Range Rover Evoque.

Despite tracing its roots back to 2003, the X3 remains one of the most popular entry-level premium SUVs in the market today. The model doesn’t reach that status without selling over 1.5 million units over the span of two generations. So expectations are high that the all-new X3 will be able to live up to its predecessors, maybe even exceed it if turns up aces in the minds of its customers. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to have an easy time at it anymore. Competitors are banging on the door, ready to stake their claim to the compact SUV title that the X3 has held at some points in its past. Now that the all-new model is out, it’s time to find out if BMW can reclaim its place atop the compact luxury SUV food chain.

Continue after the jump to read the full story.

PostHeaderIcon The new BMW X3 is Good and All, but It’s not All Peaches and Cream

So, BMW recently dropped full details on its third-generation X3 SAV and right way we praised it for its overall packaging, looks, and that awesome power output improvement for the M40i trim level. With more than 1.5 million X3’s registered since the vehicle was first introduced, it goes without saying that the X3 is a hot item. And, with pricing expected to start somewhere around $40,000 to $42,000, it’s not exactly a bank-breaker, either. And, even though I recently wrote a very favorable review about the X3 not that long ago, I have to point out that I do have a few gripes as well.

For starters, I love that the front end of the new X3 is more aggressive than ever, and it’s amazing that BMW finally ditched those round foglights. But, what the hell is with the big fake vents? Aesthetics aside, there is no point and why not use them to channel air to the brakes or to improve aerodynamic efficiency? And then, there’s the interior. Sure; the dash looks a lot better than it used to, and the steering wheel is sleeker, but what is with that aluminum trim? That’s a little Toyota Camry-ish to me. Anything with this price point and a BMW badge should at least come standard with wood trim. And, what’s with the M-Sport seats? They are no different than the standard seats in the X-Line, with the exception of the black leather and contrast stitching – where’s the extra support M cars are supposed to have? But, what about those engine choices? Sigh…

PostHeaderIcon BMW X3 M

BMW launched the X3 back in 2003 as its second SUV and the market’s first compact luxury crossover. Updated in 2010, the X3 ditched its weird-looking front fascia in favor of a nose that resembled the X5’s. The second-gen crossover also saw production move from Graz, Austria, to BMW’s U.S. factory in Greer, South Carolina. As a result, the X3 entered the North American market as a locally built vehicle with a more affordable sticker. After six successful years on the market, the second-gen X3 was replaced by a brand-new model for 2018. The big news here is that the crossover will finally get a proper M version.

With Mercedes-Benz already offering two AMG versions of the GLC and Audi reportedly working on a beefed-up version of Q5 models, BMW is finally considering green-lighting a high-performance version of the X3 for the third-generation model. Likely to arrive sometime in 2018, the X3 M has been somewhat confirmed by BMW M chief Frank van Meel at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, who also revealed that the X4 is scheduled to receive an M version as well. While the X3 M is being kept under wraps as of June 2017, we put together a speculative piece on what the crossover might have to offer once it arrives. Read on for the details.

PostHeaderIcon Official: 2018 BMW X3

2018 bmw x3

So here it is, following a massive leak we now get our first complete look at the new 2018 BMW X3. The American-built German SUV, which an important milestone for BMW operations in the U.S. at the Spartanburg plant, comes with a heavily refreshed exterior and interior as well, for the first time, an M Performance variant. But it’s still not a very desirable proposition.

Poor X3, it seems like there is something wrong with this car’s genes because while every new generation is certainly different than the one before, they are just not good looking cars. So yes, 2018 BMW X3 does get new lights and sporty bumpers – especially in the case of the M40i model – but it’s still really ugly and that’s the truth. Not that unsavory looks are going to affect its sales. The new X3 will fly out of the showrooms because, well, BMW buyers! Need I say more?

At any rate, ugly though it sure is, 2018 BMW X3 is a damn good SUV. The new version gets some tasty options chief among which the new range-topping BMW X3 M40i variant with a 360 horsepower engine and a 0 to 100 sprint time of 4.6 seconds. You also get three petrol and two diesel engine with the weakest one developing 184 horsepower. The car is lighter too and tuned more for sporty handling than off road capability.

The coolest thing about the new X3 though is all its fancy technology features. The 10.2 inch infotainment iDrive system hosts an operating system with optional gesture control and Intelligent Voice Assistant, and there is a BMW Display Key which allows you to operate the air con remotely. Then there is all the BMW CoPilot options, featuring Active Cruise Control and Driving Assistant Plus safety package with Steering and lane control assistant, Lane Change Assistant and Lane keeping assistant with side collision protection paving the way for (semi-)automated driving.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X3

The BMW X3 has always been a popular all-rounder for everyday life. Combining versatility, efficiency, luxury, and BMW driving dynamics, it’s no wonder that it sells so well, with more than 1.5 million registrations from the first two generations alone. Now, for 2018, an all-new X3 is set to roll into showrooms, and the bar has officially been raised. Offered in three different model lines – xLine, Luxury Line, and M Sport – the new X3 brings new looks with standard acoustic glass up front to go with new LED headlights, LED fog lamps, new wheels, a sloped roof, and striking body lines. The redesigned interior is more luxurious than ever and offers an improvement in comfort and functionality while three engine options will bring anywhere between 184 and 360 horsepower of people hauling goodness to your beck and call. And, to top it all off, it’s also the first BMW SAV to be offered with a trailer hitch from the factory.

All told, the new X3 is faster, lighter, and more efficient than ever, with its coefficient of drag rated at just 0.29. It’s also offered with BMW’s CoPilot, which brings things like active cruise control, lane control assist, lane keep assist, and lane change assistant, all being offered as optional equipment. It’s set to go on sale in November of 2017, so let’s dive in and take a good look at what we can expect. After all; it does have to fight for supremacy among competitors like the Mercedes GLC, Audi Q5, and Range Rover Evoque.

Update 6/26/2017: BMW has dropped official specs and images for the new BMW X3. Check out the details below as we continue to update this review throughout the day.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 BMW X3 Revealed in Leaked Footage

2018 BMW X3-leak-0

The new 2018 BMW X3 SUV gets an early reveal before its official debut thanks to some leaked material. The available footage is enough for anybody to decided whether they like or hate the new X3, although there are some mechanical highlights that might make you overlook the design issues.

The X3 has never been a looker and this new one is no exception. There is nothing wrong with it really, but the design of this car just fails to grab you. It just looks like a big fridge with a kidney grille and a BMW badge stuck to its front. There are some new lines on the 2018 BMW X3 and fresh head and taillights, but it’s the same story as before. The X3 looks as broccoli tastes: there isn’t much to cherish here.

Now, the mechanical highlights we mentioned above includes the launch of a M40i version from the get go featuring a nice and sporty M body kit, larger M wheels, special colors, a really cool interior, and above all a 360 horsepower engine out of the M2 mated to xDrive all-wheel-drive and an 8-speed transmission that enables the car to make 100 km/h from nought in 4.8 seconds. That is the kind of performance that makes you forgive meh looks and big price tags.

Stay tuned for more on the 2018 BMW X3 over the coming hours as the car goes official.

PostHeaderIcon BMW Issues the Smallest Recall Ever; One BMW X3 Affected

Normally when we announce recalls here at TopSpeed, there’s a good reason for it. Usually, it involves something major and should be taken care of immediately. It also normally accounts for a wide range of models or, at the very least, a significant number of vehicles from one model line. Well, today things are a little different, and the sheer intriguing nature of the recall was enough to convince me to tell you all about it. So, what’s so special about this recall? Well, it only affects a single example of the 2017 BMW X3. Yes; you read that correctly, it’s a single model. More specifically, it’s a 2017 BMW X3 xDrive 28i that was manufactured on July 7, 2016.

According to the NHTSA, the vehicle in question is equipped with electronic power steering (commonly abbreviated as EPS.) Apparently, the contact pins on the EPS control unit may not have been welded correctly, which could lead to increased electrical resistance in the connection that could lead to a fire. According to the NHTSA, the risk of fire is there even when the vehicle is parked, and the ignition is turned off. As always, BMW will notify the owner and will make the repair free of charge. If the build date and specific model happens to matche your X3, you can plug in your car’s VIN here to see if you happen to be that one lucky owner.

On a side note, if you happen to be that one person with a faulty EPS unit, reach out to us here. We would love to hear your story and your experience with the dealer that rectifies the situation.
