PostHeaderIcon BMW Recalling 1 Million Cars in the U.S. over Fire Risk

BMW is recalling a whopping one million vehicles in North America over two separate issues involving fire risks. Both recalls include cars produced from 2006 to the 2011 model years. One recall covers 670,000 3 Series models from 2006 to 2011 model years, while the second recall is issued for 740,000 cars from 2007 to 2011 model years. The latter includes the 128i, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and Z4 models. Although these figures amount to more than 1.4 million units, BMW says the recalls overlap and cover about one million examples. Nearly all cars have been sold in the United States, while about 15,000 are from Canada. The recalls may expand to other countries in the future, but no specific announcement has been made as of this writing.

The first recall for the 3 Series models only will address a wiring issue for heating and air conditioning system. According to the company’s report for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the systems may overheat and could increase the risk of a fire in the car. BMW has reportedly been monitoring the issue since 2008 and has made some improvements in 2011, but some incidents from 2015 and 2016, which led to injuries, prompted a mass recall. The second recall is about a valve heater issue that may cause damage to the engine compartment. No injuries or crashes related to this problem have been reported so far. All cars involved will have their wiring harnesses and valve heaters replaced at BMW dealers, free of charge.

Why it matters?

Recalls have become an important part of the auto industry in recent decades and, unfortunately, some issues have caused serious crashes, injuries, and even fatalities. So it’s not surprising that the German brand has been monitoring these problems for quite a few years a now and decided to have a big recall before more incidents and injuries are reported. If you own a 128i, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5 or Z4 vehicle built for the 2006 to 2011 model years, make sure you check with the NHTSA and your local dealer for a checkup and fix. Lives may be at stake here, so don’t take any risks.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X5 M

The current BMW X5 is four years old as of 2017 and, according to the company’s lifecycle plan, it will be around for a couple more. However, the fourth-generation SUV has already been spotted testing on public roads, and as a result, we’ve already created a rendering based on the camouflaged prototype. Now, BMW has begun testing the beefed-up M version near the Nurburgring at it’s time to have a closer look at the range-topping version of the SUV.

Likely to break cover toward the end of 2018, the upcoming X5 M will ride on the same CLAR platform as the new 5 Series sedan and the next-generation X5 it will be based on. Of course, the M-badged SUV will get unique chassis tuning as well as a wild V-8 with massive output. Interestingly enough, the new X5 M will arrive just in time for the redesigned Mercedes-AMG GLE63, also due to break cover in 2018. Find out all you need to know about the upcoming X5 M in my speculative review below.

PostHeaderIcon BMW Releases Black Fire Editions For The X6 M And The X5 M

If there were ever two models that served as pioneers of their kind in their respective markets, the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 are as good examples as you can find. The X5 was introduced in 1999, becoming one of the first premium SUVs to hit the modern automotive market. 10 years later, the X6 followed suit, ushering in a new sub-segment that has come to be known as the coupe-SUVs. Today, both the X5 and X6 are still soldiering on, and BMW is doing its part to keep models fresh with the release of the X5 M and X6 M Black Fire Editions.

Developed specifically for the high-performance M versions of both models, the Black Fire Editions provide a more menacing visual profile for both the X5 M and X6 M. The upgrades included are more cosmetic in nature than anything else, highlighted by the use of a Sapphire Black Metallic paint finish on the SUVs’ bodywork. The black treatment is actually spread throughout, covering significant spaces in both the exterior and interior. The end result certainly speaks to how Bimmer intended these two SUVs to turn out as both special edition models look about as sinister as anything we’ve seen from either of them in the past.

BMW X5 Spyshots - Fourth Testing Session

It wasn’t until 2000 that BMW stepped into the SUV segment with the BMW X5, and after 16 years, that single SUV has spawned four other crossovers, with three slotted in the lineup below it and one above it. Since the X5’s release, it has been through three different generational changes. The first happened in 2006 when the E70 X5 was born for the 2007 model year. That model lasted until 2013 when we were blessed with the current F15 generation of the X5. Notice that trend between the generational shifts of the X5? Every six years or so, BMW releases a redesigned model. And, that probably explains why we’re looking at these spy shots of what appears to be a very early iteration of the next BMW X5.

The SUV in the pictures is in what I like to call “bare-bones testing,” meaning it is covered in camo and missing most of its identifiable features. Even that kidney bean grille has been left at the shop for this trip. Since it is in the very early stages of testing, there isn’t a whole lot we can say about the next generation of the X5, but we can speculate some. Should BMW follow its current trend, we should see the fourth-generation X5 unveiled in 2018. Until then, let’s take a look at what is going on in these pictures.

Update 11/07/2017: The BMW X5 was caught in the wild yet again, but this time it wasn’t on the Nurburgring, and it has changed its clothes as well. Check out the spy shots section below to see the latest developments on the upcoming BMW X5.

November 7, 2017 – The Emperor Gets New Clothes

2018 BMW X5 - image 742852

2018 BMW X5 - image 742856

This far along in the testing phase, there isn’t a whole lot left for BMW change up, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there isn’t a lot new to talk about. It also shouldn’t come as a surprise that we’re getting our first look at the M Performance model as well. In short, the biggest notable change is that the old swirly camo is gone and has since been replaced by something more stylish and glossy. It has helped to emphasize the muscularity of the hood. There also appears to be a little more aggressiveness at the bottom of the front fascia, and the radiator grille has also received the black chrome treatment. Larger, M Sport wheels have been added to the mix as have the blue M Sport brake calipers. Outside of this the only other noticeable item is the LED units the headlights that are still angular but remain only at the bottom of the laser elements and the fact that the exhaust outlets still feature the dual round outlets inside the chrome rectangular fittings. The next time we see the X5, we should see the official taillights and a finished exhaust system as well as a serious shred of this new glossy camo. Check back in the near future for updates.

8/14/2017 – Fourth Testing Session; Third Outing at the ‘Ring

2018 BMW X5 - image 726414

2018 BMW X5 - image 726419

So far, we’ve seen the X5 on three different occasions. The first time, it was playing in the snow back in January of last year. The other two times, it has been seen being put through the paces and the Nurburgring. The X5 likes the ring – we should all aspire to be like it. Okay, maybe I took it a little too far, but the point is, it was caught for a third time on the ‘Ring today and, while it didn’t drop any serious amounts of camo, it is sporting a few changes. First off, there has been some camo removed from the front grille, ultimately exposing a larger pair of kidney grilles. With the grilles being tested fully open like the BMW will be able to know for sure that there’s ample airflow making its way to the radiator. We can now make out two horizontal louvers in the small air dam below, and the corner vents are now taking shape, losing the weird bubbled look at the ends shown on the last mule. The little openings above the corner vents have now been opened up more, also exposing more horizontal louvers that we couldn’t make out before.

More importantly, however, are the official production headlights. As you can see, the projector/halogen units of the last mule have been replaced by a pair of official laser headlights, a feature that is identifiable by those blue lines right in the middle of the headlights. The X5 will also get those new angular LED strips around each laser projector which isn’t only stylish but will also improve your visibility to oncoming traffic in certain situations. All told, it’s shaping up pretty nicely and should be just about ready for production. It should be making its debut in the early months of 2018 and is expected to borrow its drivetrain options from the 5 and 7 Series lineups. To add to this, there is also a hybrid model in the works as well as an official M version too. Obviously, things are shaping up quite nicely for the next-gen X5.

“Looking at the sides, we can make out a body line along the doors and fenders that is similar to the current model.”

As previously mentioned, there isn’t a whole lot worth talking about when it comes to these spy shots. The vehicle is clearly a BMW X5, but it has no side skirts, a minimal front fascia, and some headlights that look like they were borrowed from a 2000 BMW X5. The front fascia may be the skeleton of what the next X5’s will look like, but at this point, even that is speculation. If that hood is what we’ll see on the production model, it will be significantly toned down from the current model, but chances are, it is just a decoy used on this early test mule.

2018 BMW X5 - image 697143

2018 BMW X5 - image 697154

Looking at the sides, we can make out a body line along the doors and fenders that is similar to the current model. Since there is also lower body lines, it’s possible these doors will make it onto the next production model. To the rear, there is a rather bland fascia that will likely be styled completely differently by the time we see the next go around at testing. I don’t even know what to say about the taillights. If they are part of the new design, they will be a huge departure from the current model. It is important to keep in mind, however, that these are likely makeshift lights, used to make the test mule road legal, of new units under very heavy camo.

Current BMW X5 vs. The upcoming BMW X5

Interior

2014 BMW X5 - image 508524

Note: current BMW X5 pictured here.

We don’t have a clear view of the interior, but even if we did, you can bet it falls under the “bare bones” category too. We’re expecting the new model to be more comfortable and come with an advancement in tech features. This means we can expect softer leather, with better padding and a more visually pleasing cabin. I expect to see a different instrument cluster layout up front – maybe even moving over to a TFT display as opposed to the traditional needle gauges.

The infotainment screen will probably be of a thinner nature, and come with a slightly larger display. We’ll see small changes to the dash and center console, but nothing too extreme. With any luck, we’ll see the next generation X5 come with the gesture control seen in the 7 Series. Furthermore, now that BMW has been approved to include remote parking on models built for the U.S., they feature may make it into the U.S.-bound X5 as well.

Drivetrain

2018 BMW X5 - image 662529

At this point, it is probably way too early to be talking about the drivetrain, but something is pushing that X5 in the spy shots through the snow. In current form, the X5 comes with a gasoline-burning, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that puts out 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, or a diesel-burning, 3.0-liter I-6 that puts out 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. Moving up to the X5 xDrive50i brings a 4.4-liter V-8 with 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque.

If Bimmer continues with its current drivetrain configurations, I suspect the engines will, at least, be modified to provide a bump in power and fuel economy. Then again, to see a mule on the road this early is a suggestion that BMW may be testing some new drivetrain components. Until we get the official word, however, your guess is as good as ours.

Prices

The current X5 starts out at $54,700 in its most basic form – the sDrive 35i – and moves all the way up to $71,599 for the range-topping xDrive 50i. That is a huge range of pricing, but there are three trim levels in the middle. The xDrive 35i comes in at $57,000, the xDrive 35d comes in at $57,700 and the xDrive 40e commands $62,100.

Considering the next X5 will come with some new features, and potentially some changes to the drivetrain, it’s possible that there will be a bump up in pricing. I wouldn’t expect much, and it’s pure speculation at this point, but pricing could jump up by close to $2,000 if BMW adds to the X5 like I hope it will.

Audi Q7

2017 - 2018 Audi Q7 - image 585694

The Q7 arrived to the party a little late in comparison to the X5. It initially debuted in 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor show, but didn’t hit the North American market until the 2007 model year. Ten years later, and the Q7 edged into a new generation for the 2017 model year. Sporting a whole new design, the Q7 is currently available in three trim levels – the Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. All trim levels come standard with Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, and a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 that puts out 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The Q7, with its lighter design, can hit 60 mph in 5.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 130 mph. The Q7 starts out at $54,800 and moves up to $64,300 for the premium prestige.

Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE - image 710343

Launched all the way back in 1997 as the M-Class, the Mercedes GLE is the oldest SUV in the midsize luxury segment. Redesigned most recently in 2011, the hauler received a new mid-cycle facelift in 2015, when it was also renamed the GLE-Class. The German SUV is available with a variety of gasoline engines, including both V-6 and V-8 units, with output ranging from 302 to 436 for non-AMG versions. Opt for the AMG GLE63 and output jumps to 550 horsepower, while the GLE63 S comes with 577 horsepower on top. Much like the X5, this SUV is also scheduled for a redesign, with the fourth-generation model likely to arrive in 2018. Pricing starts from $52,200 in 2017, but expect an increase with the update.

Read our speculative review of the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class.

Conclusion

2018 BMW X5 - image 662534

It is hard to really draw a conclusion on a model that is so heavily camouflaged, and lacking so many production-ready features. What I can say is that based on how well the X5 evolved from the first generation to the second, that BMW isn’t likely to disappoint when this model is finally spotted in full production form. I was already a big fan of the X5 in its current form, so I’m hoping that Bimmer doesn’t go overboard with trying to improve the model. I’m looking forward to seeing the next shots we get of the future X5.

  • Leave it
    • Very little revealed from spy shots
    • Will probably be more expensive

PostHeaderIcon BMW X5 M Typhoon by G-Power

A little over a month ago, BMW tuner extraordinaire G-Power presented a new engine upgrade for the BMW X5 M. It was noticeably missing the “Typhoon” moniker since it lacked any of the visual upgrades that the name comes from. Well, better late than never, right? Because the new Typhoon kit for the high-performance luxury SUV has arrived and it packs the same amount of power upgrades – 750 horsepower and 723 pound-feet of torque – as the the previous kit to go along with an extensive body kit.

The cosmetic upgrades are the big difference here and they make a ridiculous difference in both the X5 M’s stance and appearance. It also makes for a lighter SUV, which should pay dividends when the vehicle is blowing through the highways of the world. I’m holding off on calling it a visual upgrade because not everybody may find it appetizing to the eyes. But for those who appreciate a jacked-looking BMW X5 M with matching performance credentials, this new Typhoon kit is a feast for the senses.

Be prepared to spend, though, because G-Power’s programs don’t come cheap. That’s especially true for the Typhoon program because the wide body kit alone will cost you the equivalent of a hot hatchback

Ask any BMW X5M owner and not one of them will tell you they wished the car had more power. But in case some of them get bored with the standard 575 horsepower the standard engine offers, Mcchip-DKR has come up with an ECU kit that boosts that output up to 628 horsepower.

It is a huge gain considering the ingredients of the package are a few lines of codes and it only takes Mcchip technicians 4 to 6 hours to have it up and running on your BMW X5M. They even dyno test it for you and provide proof of their work. When they are done with the X5M, the 4.4 liter bi-turbo V8 in it will churn out 628 horsepower and 864 Nm of torque (standard 575 PS and 750 Nm).

Fortunately, BMW X5M comes with a good enough chassis along with high-performance brakes and suspension so it can handle the extra oomph with ease. The car features an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and Dynamic Performance Control systems, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), double-wishbone front suspension, Dynamic Damper Control with electronically adjustable dampers, M Servotronic steering with individual adjustment, and 20-inch wheels.

DS-Hamann BMW X5 M50d-0

DS Automobile and Autowerke GmbH has come up with yet another fine Hamann product, this time based on one of the best SUVs in BMW’s lineup. The Hamann BMW X5 M50d DS has put together strikes the right balance between power, style, performance and economy.

Belonging to the “super diesel” M50 family, the base for this project a powerful X5 that offers monstrous amounts of torque as standard. Even so, DS has gone ahead and upgraded the engine’s software, so their Hamann BMW X5 M50d would have more oomph to play with – 462 PS and 890Nm to be precise.

As for the styling, a host of Hamann goodies are installed on this X5 M50d, and although they look somewhat subtle and understated, they do their part to give the big SUV a sportier look. The car gets front spoiler, side skirts and vents, fender flares, rear diffuser and rear wing, plus black-out tailpipes. But the main highlight of the exterior is a set of Hamann Anniversary Evo rims in size11 x 23 inch 315 section tires all around.

Those black tailpipes on Hamann BMW X5 M50d are connected to a sport exhaust system with Active Sound system. So not only does this super SUV offer a good deal of power, it also sounds sporty to match the performance.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X5M Looks Interesting in Pine Green

BMW X5M Pine Green-0

One of the benefits for wrapping your car – besides the normal stuff like cost, fast installation, and the ability to have a new color every month – is that if you have a good taste, you can end turn your ordinary looking car into a head-tuning work of art. That, we believe, has been the case with this BMW X5M.

The owner of this BMW X5M obviously appreciates the performance and the capabilities of the 560 horsepower super SUV because, well, he bought the thing. But he evidently found the looks of the car somewhat boring and not really on the part with what it offers in terms of mechanical sex appeal.

So he sent the car to the expert wrappers at Print Tech with instructions to change the color into something unique, cool, and interesting. The wrappers went with a satin Pine Green color which sounds controversial when you hear it, but looks stunning when you see it on the car.

Pine Green is a fantastic color for any car, and it works especially fine on the BMW X5M. We would probably have those chrome bits like the front and side grilles, and also the wheels, blacked out. But hey, the X5 is already looking a lot more interesting. And it has room for improvement should the owner got bored again!

A.R.T. Tuning GmbH released pictures and details of their wide body styling package for the new BMW X5. Dubbed xHawk5, the kit designed for A.R.T BMW X5 is so thorough and rich in details, it almost looks like a coach-build project.

The tuner has given the X5 an extreme makeover in this program, boosting the car’s showiest features and make them borderline vulgar. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, because people who buy heavily-modified SVUs like this sort of design. In fact, the more complex the looks, the happier they are with the kit.

The extremely complex A.R.T BMW X5 comes with new bumpers designed specifically to work with the custom fenders and aero parts on this car, custom kidney grilles, front and rear fender extensions, side sills, rear diffuser unit, and quad 100mm tailpipe arrangement. Add to that a set of fog lights at the front and a sport vented bonnet.

Other highlights of A.R.T BMW X5 xHawk5 include a set of 22-inch 295/30 tires and a revised interior in which leather and Alcantara are generously used to give the cabin an aura of sportiness. The tuner has not reported any performance upgrades for the time being, but stay tuned.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X5 xDrive40e

The X5 first hit American shores in the 2000 model year as BMW’s first-ever journey into the realm of SUVs. The German automaker followed it up with the X3, and now as we near the 2016 model year, BMW has grown a healthy selection of SUVs to choose from. A new addition to the X5 lineup is coming for 2016, in the form of the X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid, as BMW tries to stay ahead of the times with this fuel-sipping people-hauler.

Combining a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to create over 300 horsepower seems like a wonderful plan on paper. However, with a performance hybrid like the 2015 Cayenne S E-Hybrid already on the market, and the 2016 Audi Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI set to deliver insane hybrid diesel mileage and performance to Europe, is the X5 xDrive40e too little too late?

PostHeaderIcon Video: Watch This Frightening Attempted Carjacking of a BMW X5 in South Africa

Two people driving a BMW X5 in South Africa are very fortunate to be alive after a botched carjacking by a group of men posing as police officers. Rekord East, the local newspaper for Pretoria East, reports that the white BMW 1 Series hatchback was equipped with blue lights and the men were wearing jackets, bulletproof vests and had weapons that made the couple believe they were police officers, and most of the terrifying incident was caught on video by an eyewitness.

By the time the video starts, the male passenger had already been placed in the back seat of the 1 Series, and the woman was attempting to get away from two of the men. Initially, the eyewitnesses thought the carjackers/kidnappers were legitimately the police and commented that woman shouldn’t try to get away. It soon became clear that the situation was more serious than they had imagined.

At some point, the woman from the X5 realizes the men are not police officers, and she tries to run away before being dragged back to her vehicle, punched and then thrown in the back seat. The women recording the video then realize something is wrong when the two cars just begin to drive off and the man jumps from the moving hatchback. This creates a diversion and the woman escapes from the back seat of the X5 and she runs toward the women, who are now on the phone with the real police.

The car speeds off with all the men in the car, and the X5 and its occupants left behind. The report goes on to say that two shots were fired in this incident, but there were no injuries reported. Police later found the 1 Series abandoned with all of the weapons and police equipment still inside. It doesn’t sound like any of the men have been caught.

PostHeaderIcon BMW X5 M

The high-performance BMW X5 M was launched for the 2010 model year, four years into the SUV’s second-generation model and 10 years since the midsize, luxury SUV made its global debut. Compared to its less insane sibling, the X5 M received a more aggressive exterior, a host of bespoke interior features a more powerful engine. While the X5’s 4.4-liter V-8 was rated at 400 ponies, the X5 M’s delivered an astounding 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, making it one of the most powerful SUVs in production. The X5 M was impressively fast, needing only 4.5 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standing start. As we venture into the 2015 model year, the X5 M is receiving the same exterior and interior updates as the facelifted X5, plus a few additional ponies to its tried-and-true eight-banger.

The revised X5 M is set to make its global debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show in November, where it will be displayed alongside its sportier brother, the X6 M. Read on to find out what’s new for the X5 M.

Updated 11/21/2014: We are live at the LA Auto Show, and we snapped a ton of images of the new X5 M. You can see the key images after the jump and more in our gallery.
