PostHeaderIcon President Donald Trump’s New Presidential Cadillac Limo “Beast” is Finally in Service

The new presidential limousine, loosely similar in appearance to the Cadillac CT6, is finally in service and was first seen in public in New York earlier this week where the UN General Assembly gathered. It is the first new presidential limousine in almost a decade.

No other president’s means of transportation is as famous as that of the president of the United States. Commonly known as ’The Beast’. The introduction of the automobile as the president’s means of transportation didn’t happen right away, though, the first president to have a fleet being William Howard Taft in the early part of the last century.

As time went by, the limousines grew in both size and weight when it was decided that bulletproof glass and bodywork is a necessity. Nowadays, the presidential limousines, codenamed ’Stagecoach’, run on truck underpinnings and their specifications are secret.

The fact that President Donald Trump was getting a new limousine was, though, an open secret with the car having been seen testing in camouflage back in April. The previous state car, which debuted back in 2009 under President Barack Obama, was also a Cadillac-badged vehicle.

PostHeaderIcon CTS-V and ATS-V are Axed to Make Way for the 2019 Cadillac CT6-V

Cadillac has announced it will reposition the recently revealed CT6 V-Sport as an actual V-branded model. That’s all well and good, but it apparently entails waving goodbye to the excellent ATS-V and CTS-V performance sedans. Both will be taken out of production by the spring of 2019, and in their place will be the CT6-V, once more performance bits are added on.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac CT6 V-Sport

Introduced in 2015 as a spiritual successor to the Cadillac Fleetwood, the CT6 slots above the XTS and is the company’s largest sedan on offer. Designed to go against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8, the CT6 is available with four different drivetrains, including a plug-in hybrid model. Come 2018 and Cadillac finally decided it’s time to offer a high-performance version of the sedan under the V-Sport badge. The new trim joins similar versions of the CTS and XTS in the brand’s V-Sport lineup, but benefits from a more powerful, brand-new V-8 engine.

Revealed alongside the facelifted version of the standard CT6, the V-Sport gets all the new design features, some of which are borrowed from the Escala concept, plus a few extras for added sportiness on top. The new V-8 engine is arguably the main highlight of the CT6 V-Sport, as it produces more output than any other Cadillac engine to date, except for the supercharged V-8 in the CTS-V, and enables the sedan to compete against the Mercedes-AMG S63 and the BMW M760Li xDrive. Let’s find out more about it in the review below.

PostHeaderIcon The Cadillac CT6 V-Sport Gives the Mercedes-AMG S65 Something to Worry About

Launched in 2016, the Cadillac CT6 is one of the company’s newest vehicles. Despite its relatively young age, it just received a facelift at the 2018 New York Auto Show. The bigger news is that Cadillac also introduced a V-Sport version of the sedan, making the CT6 the first flagship Caddy to feature a performance trim.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 Cadillac CT6 Gets Super Cruise Hands-Free Driving System

cadillac super cruise

Every car maker has a different approach to the concept of autonomous driving. Some have chosen to focus on long-term, more ambitious goals such as full autonomy, while others like Cadillac decided to work on more immediate solutions to enhance the practicality of their current models. That’s why they came up with the Super Cruise system, now available for the 2018 Cadillac CT6.

Pitched as the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology for the highway, Cadillac Super Cruise is a semi-autonomous system that uses two currently available and widely-used technologies, driver attention system and precision LiDAR map data, to keep the 2018 Cadillac CT6 between the white lines on the freeway. You can think of it as an advanced cruise control.

The Super Cruise system on the 2018 Cadillac CT6 makes long-distance driving a lot more comfortable. In addition, its hands-free capability and driver attention system help the driver safely complete common tasks in the car, such as using the navigation system, adjusting the audio system or taking a phone call.

What sets the Super Cruise apart from similar systems though is that unlike those systems which only rely upon steering wheel input and warning messages to request driver attention, this one uses driver attention system with inputs from uses a small camera located on the top of the steering column which monitors the driver’s face. The SC also benefits from precision LiDAR map data in addition to real-time cameras, sensors and GPS. This system seems like a good base on which Cadillac can develop their future, fully autonomous platform.

The post 2018 Cadillac CT6 Gets Super Cruise Hands-Free Driving System appeared first on Motorward.

PostHeaderIcon Hands-Free, Semi-Autonomous Driving from… Cadillac??

Self-driving cars are coming. There’s no way around it, and come 2018, you’ll be able to get a Cadillac that lets you go truly hands-free. This new technology is being called “Super Cruise” and uses lidar map data along with onboard radar sensors, cameras, and GPS to navigate most limited-access highways in the U.S. and Canada. When activated on a road that is determined to be safe for use, drivers of the 2018 Cadillac CT6 Prestige will be able to take their hands off of the wheel, and the car will navigate the highway on its own – just like Tesla does. But, there’s a twist.

See, while Tesla’s AutoPilot system uses steering wheel feedback to determine if the driver is paying attention, GM took another big step towards the big-brother mindset. You won’t need to keep your hands on the wheel because the car will keep tabs on you via a small camera built into the top of the steering wheel. To be more specific, the camera system, which uses infrared light, will monitor the driver’s head position to determine when the driver is looking while the system is activated. This is what makes Super Cruise “more technologically advanced” than other systems currently available.

Should the system determine that the driver isn’t paying attention, it will issue a mild prompt to tell the driver to pay attention. If that doesn’t work, there are other visual alerts (light bar on the steering wheel and instrument cluster) and tactile alerts from the driver’s seat. If that doesn’t get your eyes back on the road, the CT6 will bring the car to a controlled stop and even contact OnStar so that it can alert first responders, if necessary.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid

A few years ago, GM decided that Cadillac needs a makeover and brought new staff to the brand, which devised a new strategy that included several new models. One of them if the CT6, which arrived in early 2016 as Cadillac’s flagship vehicle. Placed above the XTS in the lineup, the CT6 is somewhat of a successor to the Fleetwood, which was phased out in 1999. The new sedan is pretty innovative for Cadillac, using a lightweight platfrom and construction that makes the base model weigh as little as 3,657 pounds. On top of that, it is loaded with an impressive amount of convenience features, as well as enough state-of-the-art tech to give the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series a run for their money. For 2017, Cadillac also unveiled a hybrid version of the full-size sedan.

Introduced at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, the CT6 Plug-In Hybrid grants Cadillac access to a tiny niche of full-size sedans using a gasoline and electric drivetrain. Essentially an answer to the Mercedes-Benz S550e Plug-In Hybrid, the CT6 will also compete against the BMW 740e iPerformance, and in some markets the Lexus LS 600h L. Using the same underpinnings and construction as the gasoline CT6, the hybrid arrives as one of the most versatile full-size four-doors, bringing together stout performance, range-topping technology, and unrivaled fuel economy.

“The CT6 is a technological showcase throughout, and by far the lightest car in its class, making it an ideal platform for electrification,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “In the CT6, Cadillac presents a new formula for prestige luxury. The advanced Plug-In Hybrid system is a key addition, providing a combination of exceptional fuel economy, crisp acceleration and strong electric-driving range.”

De Nysschen’s statement may sound like yet another dose of solid PR, but it’s not. There’s a lot of truth in there, and I’ll explain why in the review below.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac Plans To Offer Full Range Of Cars In Europe

Cadillac is launching a new assault in Europe that will include an expanded model lineup, right-hand drive, new diesel engines and a new flagship sedan that will sit above the 2016 Cadillac CT6. GM president Dan Ammann confirmed the new strategy to Autocar and said the new approach in Europe will take advantage of its current position as a niche brand in the continent and will include “exceptional service.”

General Motors’ luxury arm has been pretty much phoning it in to Europe over the last few years, and currently only offers the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe and 2014 Cadillac ATS Sedan, 2015 Cadillac CTS, 2014 Cadillac SRX and the 2015 Cadillac Escalade, which couldn’t be less appropriate for narrow European streets. What’s more, Cadillac only offers left-hand-drive cars in the U.K., where cars on lots have reportedly been collecting dust. Cadillac is banking that a new right-hand-drive option, expanded lineup and improved service network will help move a few more units in Europe.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac Prepares More Surprises For The Future

Between 2015 and 2020, Cadillac has some major plans – plans it hopes will help it compete better with German automakers. Cadillac looks to redesign most of its lineup and add some new models along the way. It all started this year with the launch of the third-generation 2016 Cadillac CTS-V, and the push to start production of the 2016 Cadillac CT6 by the end of the year. This may not be too exciting for fans of the brand, but there is much more to come as we creep up on the end of the decade.

Let’s talk Crossovers and SUVs for a minute. Currently Cadillac has the 2014 Cadillac SRX crossover – soon to be redesigned and named the 2017 Cadillac XT5 – and the 2015 Cadillac Escalade. By 2017, expect to see the release of a compact crossover and a full-sized crossover. They will likely be named the 2018 Cadillac XT3 and the XT6, respectively. Eventually, by the end of the decade, Cadillac will launch a subcompact crossover that will probably answer to the name of XT1. There are no plans to discontinue the Escalade anytime soon, as it will be re-engineered by 2018 and will continue to serve as the only SUV in the lineup.

There appears to be at least two new sedans coming by 2020 also. A small, entry-level sedan, which we suspect will be named the 2017 Cadillac CT2, is currently on the drawing board. It should compete with the 2015 Audi A3 Sedan and the 2014-2015 Mercedes CLA, but unlike either, it will have rear-wheel drive. Expect to see this baby sometime in 2018. The biggest edition to the lineup will come in the form of another large sedan – called the CT7 – that will be the flagship and finally allow Caddy to compete with BMW’s 7-series and the Mercedes S-Class.

Along with the list of new models to come, Cadillac expects to release not only a hybrid version of the CT6 but a diesel version as well. Eventually, the ATS will be refreshed, and a convertible version will be available shortly thereafter.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac CT6 PHEV

There have been rumors and reports of a plug-in hybrid version of the upcoming CT6, but they remained unconfirmed until now. Today, at the Shanghai Auto Show, Cadillac confirmed that there will indeed be a plug-in version of its upcoming flagship.

When Cadillac first unveiled the 2016 CT6 at the 2015 New York Auto Show, it arrived with a trio of engine options. The smallest of the group was a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pumped out 265 horsepower. The two optional engines were both V-6s, but one was a 3.6-liter that produced 335 horsepower, while the other was a twin-turbo 3.0-liter with 400 ponies.

As of 2015, it appears as if the CT6 PHEV will only have to butt heads with the Mercedes S550 Plug-In Hybrid, as neither Audi nor BMW have released range-topping plug-in hybrid sedans. With the hybrid flagship market still in its very early stages, can this thrifty but expensive sedan thrive?

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac Working On New "Mega Powerful" V-8 Engine

While most mainstream manufacturers are moving toward downsizing and electrification, Cadillac will introduce a new V-8 powerplant, despite the new luxury CT6 having been launched with four-cylinder and V-6 engines. That’s the word from Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen, who described the upcoming mill as “mega powerful” and “highly efficient.”

De Nysschen revealed the big news on Facebook, in a response to a well-researched article that argues that the era of the Cadillac V-8 is over now that the flagship CT6 arrived with only four- and six-cylinder engines. In his reply to the author, de Nysschen said “there absolutely will be another state-of-the-art mega powerful highly efficient new 8-cylinder from Cadillac, besides the CTS-V engine.”

He then went on to add that the new powerplant will be specifically developed for Cadillac, thus not borrowed from other GM vehicles. “The V-8 Cadillac is alive and well today, and will be in even better shape tomorrow,” he stressed, without providing additional details.

Cadillac currently sells just two vehicles with V-8 engines, the 2016 CTS-V and the Escalade. The high-performance sedan uses a supercharged, 6.2-liter rated at 640 horsepower and pound-feet of twist, while the full-size SUV employs a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 with 420 horses and 455 pound-feet on tap.

PostHeaderIcon First Cadillac CT6 Will Be Auctioned For Charity

General Motors has made a habit of offering first production cars of various nameplates for charity. Recent notable auctions saw cars such as the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the 2014 Camaro Z/28 raise money for charity, and the 2015 COPO Camaro is set to go under the hammer to benefit the needy as well. Now, GM has just announced that the first 2016 Cadillac CT6 to roll off the assembly line is also headed to the auction block. The innovative full-size sedan will raise money for the Karmanos Cancer Institute, a research center dedicated to the prevention, early detection, treatment, and eventual eradication of cancer. It will be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Palm Beach, scheduled April 17th to 19th.

There’s no estimate as to how much the CT6 will raise, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it fetch in excess of $700,000, or more than ten times its rumored sticker.

The Caddy will share the stage with the first 2015 COPO Camaro, as well as handful of bespoke GM cars. A custom Tony Stewart “Smoke” Edition 396 Chevelle will benefit the Darrell Gwynn Foundation, while a 1969 Camaro Z/28 restomod built by Torque Sports and Performance will raise funds for the SJO Foundation For Hope. A modified 1996 GMC Sierra Custom Pickup was privately donated, with proceeds to benefit the Boy Scouts of America.

PostHeaderIcon Mark Reuss Talks About GM's Direction

GM executive vice president Mark Reuss recently discussed some of automaker’s plans for the future, including Cadillac’s focus, Chevrolet’s outlook, and even the future of the Buick Avenir.

In a discussion with reporters at the NYAS, Ruess said he didn’t want Cadillac to try to “out-German the Germans,” but rather concentrate on reaching a younger generation. “There’s an opportunity there for those people to drive something different than what their parents did.”

What makes Cadillac different? Reuss thinks it’s “…probably different value equation, probably different powertrain equation, probably different styling equation, that’s very American. And not syrupy retro.”

“We’ve got an ATS-V that’s going to flame the M3 and M4,” Reuss continued, “and then we’ve got a CTS-V that’s a 200-mile-an-hour hammer. Those are credibility punctuations.”

Reuss also said he was open to a Cadillac sports car, but that GM was “…trying to fill in as a priority the Cadillac entries that we don’t have in the marketplace on a volume and profit basis first.”

Regarding the new Chevy Volt, Reuss said that the toned-down exterior aesthetic was a response to market demands, adding that the last model didn’t sell due to a design that looked a bit like a “science experiment.”

Reuss was also supportive of a production version of the Buick Avenir concept, if vaguely: “It was such a hit, what would it look like in production, what would it cost to do it. So that’s where we’re at.”

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac CT6 Hybrid to Debut in Shanghai and V-Series Under Consideration

The 2016 CT6 made its much-anticipated debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show to a pile of fanfare, but this isn’t the only trick Cadillac has up its sleeve with its new flagship sedan. There have been rumors floating around about a hybrid version of the CT6, and reports claimed that Mark Reuss, GM’s product chief, confirmed the model during an investors meeting in the fall of 2014. In New York, Auto Blog caught up to Reuss and got him to all but confirm the model’s debut at the Shanghai Auto Show, which kicks off on April 22, 2015.

According to the report, when Auto Blog queried Reuss about the CT6 Hybrid, he said “We’ve really got to wait until we finish rounding out the portfolio,” then followed that up with “The Shanghai show is where you should look for all of it. So stay tuned.”

If that’s not a confirmation of the hybrid CT6, then I don’t know what it is.

The details surrounding the hybrid powertrain are still unknown, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see it take some technology from the 2016 Chevy Volt. It won’t be a range-extended EV like the Volt, but rather a plug-in hybrid with a short electric-only range.

The report also discusses the V-Series version of the CT6, which Reuss seemed less confident about. He did make it clear that Caddy is tossing the idea around, but it is still trying to determine if it makes business sense.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac CT6

After years of leaks, spy shots, and endless rumors about its feasibility, the Cadillac CT6 has finally become a reality, in time to make its debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show. Don’t think of it as a long-awaited answer to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series though, because Cadillac wants the CT6 to battle smaller German models as well, with a larger CT8 to be positioned directly against the aforementioned trio.

Even so, the odd positioning strategy makes the CT6 similar in size to any European luxury car, as its length and wheelbase are on par with those of a BMW 7 Series short-wheelbase. On the other hand, thanks to an aluminum-intensive platform, the model weighs about as much as the smaller CTS, which is lighter than a 5 Series. Whether Cadillac’s strategy will work in the long run remains to be seen, but the CT6 seems to tick a lot of right boxes.

Update 06/14/2016: Cadillac has announced two additions to the CT6’s bevy of technology. First, new HDMI and USB ports allow rear passengers to use video streaming devices like Google Chromecast though the cars’ on-board Wi-Fi connection in combination with a paired smart phone or tablet. Second is a video recording system that operates off four exterior cameras, allowing the driver to preserve the video footage. The system can also begin recording should the vehicle’s security system becomes armed, catching criminals or hit-and-run drivers in the act.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac Announces New 3.0-liter V-6 Turbo Engine Will Debut In CT6

Cadillac will introduce a new 3.0-liter V-6 with the upcoming luxury CT6 sedan, the firm announced Friday. The turbocharged unit is part of a new generation of V-6 engines that will eventually make it into various General Motors vehicles. Peak output for the twin-turbo V-6 that will debut in the CT6 model is estimated at 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, making it one of the most power-dense V-6 engines on the market, at 133 horsepower per liter.

The engine isn’t just about horsepower and torque though. To help it save fuel, GM built it with both cylinder deactivation and stop/start features, making it the first six-cylinder engine to combine turbocharging and these fuel-saving technologies. Cadillac estimated the 3.0-liter will be six percent more efficient than GM’s turbo 3.6-liter V-6.

As usual, Cadillac went ahead and compare its new engine to similar powerplants offered by its German rivals. Specifically, Caddy says the 3.0-liter’s 133 horsepower per liter is 27 percent greater than the BMW 740Li’s 3.0L twin-turbo V-6 (rated at 315 horses) and 29 percent more than the Audi A7’s 3.0L supercharged V-6 (rated at 310 horses). What’s more, the firm claims its new engine will deliver “exceptional quietness and smoothness” and be up to 5 dB quieter than the Audi 3.0-liter TFSI engine.

In the CT6, the new powerplant will mate to GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90, eight-speed automatic transmission. However, this combo won’t be the CT6’s based drivetrain, as Cadillac also wants a turbo-four in the sedan.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac CT6 Wil Use Mixed-Material Structure

Back in January, Cadillac revealed the new manufacturing process that would be used at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant to build the 2016 Cadillac CT6, and now it is releasing a few more details about what its all-new flagship sedan is made of. As shown in the image provided by Cadillac, most of the CT6’s passenger compartment is made of steel, while the engine compartment, trunk, roof and rocker panels are aluminum. In total, this “aluminum intensive” structure will be composed of 64 percent aluminum.

Bonding the aluminum and high-strength steel together is what requires Cadillac’s patented manufacturing process, and it will include welding, rivets and adhesives. While more challenging, this process helps make the 2016 Cadillac CT6 lighter, quieter and more rigid. These are all elements that the CT6 will be required to possess if Cadillac plans on making any real run at the full-size luxury sedan segment.

Cadillac revealed a teaser of the 2016 Cadillac CT6 in a commercial for the Oscars last month, but the new sedan will be officially unveiled on March 31 at the New York International Auto Show ushering in a new naming convention for Cadillac as well as a new level of luxury and quality.

PostHeaderIcon Cadillac CT6 Could Get a New Twin-Turbo V-8

We’ve already seen the CT6 make an appearance in a commercial during the Oscars, but there is still much left unknown about Caddy’s upcoming flagship sedan. One mystery is what engines will it have available to it. Well, Cadillac boss, Johan de Nysschen, took some time out to talk to the readers at Jalopnik, and they were wise enough to ask the typically candid executive about what it’ll have under its hood.

De Nysschen was first asked about the potential competitors for the CT6, and he was quoted “The lightweight body construction allows us to push the envelope when it comes to powertrain in a way we know that the rest of the industry will follow. This includes a very wide mix of engines, starting with a 2-liter turbo, up to, eventually, a high-performance advanced V-8 turbo. You tell me who this car competes with?”

As if that wasn’t enough, he followed that up with this response in regards to the type of performer the CT6 will be: “The lightweight body structure allows us to achieve formidable performance even with a twin-turbo V-6. Imagine how this car would perform with a twin-turbo V-8.”

Those quotes both point to the virtual certainty that Cadillac has intentions to compete with the upper echelon of Mercedes’ and BMW’s lineups. Specifically the S63 AMG and the Alpina B7.
