Chevrolet Unveils 2017 Bolt EV at CES

While other car makers used the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to showcase their latest tech features, Chevrolet decided to go ahead and unveil a brand-new car, all of it. The model in question is the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, a fully-electric hatchback that is pitched as a game-changer in this segment.

While technical details of Chevrolet Bolt EV are yet to be released, the company is quick to mention the 200-mile range of the car as its party piece. It’s not that great a range by, say, Tesla’s standards, but pretty good for a small, city hatchback. The Bolt should be able to handle your daily driving routines without any issues, justifying its $30K price tag.

Chevrolet Bolt EV looks rather good, too. The Bolt features an aero kit with pronounced front and rear spoilers, sculpted head and taillights, and a new interpretation of Chevy’s corporate look. It also boasts a well designed interior which according to Chevy is packed with connectivity and infotainment technologies including smartphone integration and a 10” infotainment display.

“The Bolt EV truly embodies the ingenuity that is at the core of everything we do at Chevrolet,” said Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America and head of Global Chevrolet. “The technologies and the engineering expertise behind the Bolt EV are tremendous examples of the kind of innovation we intend to offer our customers, across an array of products at a tremendous value – something only Chevrolet can deliver.”

Bentley Continental GT Monster01

Bentley too wants a piece of the media frenzy that is the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas. They have teamed up with electronic giant Monster for this purpose and presented at the show the Bentley Continental GT Monster by Mulliner, featuring a kickass audio system.

This is not a concept or a show piece. Bentley Continental GT Monster is a limited edition production model they say is designed to appeal to young professional athletes and musicians – presumably because only those guys can afford it. The bespoke custom sound system in this car features 16 hand selected Monster speakers, personally tuned by Head Monster Noel Lee, with a 3,400-watt output.

Bentley Continental GT Monster02

But it’s just the sound that makes the Bentley Continental GT Monster an interesting proposition. Mulliner has made sure the car also looks and feels exclusive on other levels other than acoustical. Based on the V8 S model, the vehicle comes with red and black interior featuring Beluga hide and steering rim, a unique 3D laser-etched fascia panel designed inspired by Monster logo, unique headrest embroidery, and a pair of Monster’s Newest 24K gold wireless headphone. The exterior is finished in Onyx black and gets Hotspur accents including a unique body kit and radiator shell bezel.

Bentley Continental GT Monster03

Head Monster Noel Lee noted: “Monster is proud to collaborate with Bentley on bringing the sound and look of a Monster ride to those who want something bold and different.  With our Pure Monster Sound system, the drive will be truly incredible and brings a new level of excitement to the driving experience. That’s why this collaboration for the Continental GT V8 S is such a perfect fit. Our Monster motto ‘Always Lead Never Follow’ has never been more appropriately applied than in association with this impeccably designed automobile.”

PostHeaderIcon McLaren 675LT JVCKenwood Unveiled at CES

McLaren 675LT JVCKenwood-1

We didn’t expect to see a brand like McLaren at the CES 2016, but turns out they actually have one of the coolest features of the show. The car they unveiled in Las Vegas is McLaren 675LT JVCKenwood concept, featuring the tech company’s CAROPTRONICS systems.

What has been done with the McLaren 675LT JVCKenwood concept is taking the minimalist interior of the super car to the next level. You notice on the exterior the side mirrors are gone and replaced by a pair of camera blades, as is the rear view mirror. The goal here was to reduce weight and increase the driver’s field of view.

McLaren 675LT JVCKenwood-2

McLaren 675LT JVCKenwood has a black exterior garnished with JVCKENWOOD silver racing stripes and Paladium Grey accents, and an interior with Carbon Black Nappa Leather dashboard, Geometric Black Technical Fabric with a waxy grained finish, and Calypso Orange Nappa Leather on the racing seats. It also features a steering wheel from McLaren P1 GTR.

McLaren 675LT JVCKenwood-3

The technological highlights of this concept, provided by JVCKenwood include Digital Rear View Monitor (DRVM), HUD system that replaces the conventional instrument cluster, and ADAS system which detects the presence of vehicles and communicates information collected to drivers. McLaren is not going to use any of these gizmos in production cars. This 675 concept is designed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Formula 1 partnership with JVC.

PostHeaderIcon BMW i Vision Future Interaction Is Not an i8 Spyder

BMW i Vision Future Interaction-0

If you’ve been waiting for BMW to reveal a production version of the i8 Spyder at CES 2016, you can stop now. It’s not happening. The drop-top i8 they brought to CES turned out to be the BMW i Vision Future Interaction, a door-less, roof-less autonomous-ready vehicle for the distant future.

The car does come with a number of really interesting technology features, however. BMW i Vision Future Interaction utilizes the company’s latest achievements in gesture control technology, which they call AirTouch, to take hands-free control in cars to a whole new level. It features function control with gestures, touch-sensitive surfaces and voice control, and comes with large displays whose content adjust to match the situation.

The main highlights of BMW i Vision Future Interaction interior include a 21-inch panorama display, instrument cluster with three-dimensional display, and AirTouch with sensors that recognise movements made with the hand and also depth movements. It’s like touchscreen, only you touch the air. Sounds like a bit of a faff, to be honest, but they say it’s efficient, just like the car’s drive modes: Pure Drive (driving yourself), Assist (assistance systems intervene actively) and Auto Mode (highly automated operation).

Also at CES, BMW showcased their latest software Connected technologies and features that result from it, including Open Mobility Cloud networks for ultimate interconnectedness, Gesture Control Parking, Remote 3D map, and Bumper Detect, among others.

PostHeaderIcon Faraday Future FFZERO1 Unveiled at CES

Faraday Future FFZERO1-0

The 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is the ideal place for the debut of an all-electric super car which is challenging the crown of all the big boys in the gasoline league. This is Faraday Future FFZERO1 concept, and it’s an electric race car claiming some seriously big numbers.

Now, we have seen concepts like this, created by visionary but often overly ambitious startups, coming and going before without offering something of practical substance. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with Faraday Future FFZERO1. For starters, it is created by a team of eccentric looking pioneers which is always a good sing. What’s more, the idea is so crazy, it might just work.

Faraday Future FFZERO1-1
Faraday Future FFZERO1-2
Faraday Future FFZERO1-3

The powertrain in Faraday Future FFZERO1 is a quad-core electric system which means it has one electric motor per wheel with a total output of over 1,000 horsepower. That power has to carry a lightweight and extremely aerodynamic body made from carbon fiber and composites, shielding an interior that features stuff like smart-phone integrated steering wheel, augmented reality, and NASA-inspired zero-gravity driver’s seat for optimum comfort and reduced fatigue during a race. The car claims a 0-60 time of 3 seconds and a top speed of over 200 mph.

Faraday Future is planning to build a mega factory in Las Vegas and then get busy producing electric vehicles based on the technologies used in the FFZERO1.

Faraday Future FFZERO1 highlights:

Powertrain

4 Quad Core Motors with over 1,000 horsepower

0-60 in less than 3 seconds

    Top speed: +200MPH

Interior

Single seat occupancy surrounded by newly developed high-performance materials

A fully-connected car featuring intuitive UI for integration between virtual and head-up displays

Smartphone-connected remote vehicle setup and anticipatory personalization; capable of live analysis of vehicle systems

Exterior

Innovative carbon fiber and lightweight composite construction

    Advanced high performance racing suspension

Advanced vehicle dynamic control and torque vectoring

Radically reduced drag and battery cooling through aero tunnel design

PostHeaderIcon BMW at CES 2016: AirTouch with 3D Control

bmw-ces-2016

BMW is indulging their inner geek at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (CES 2016), planning to showcase some really interesting technologies they say offer a glimpse of the interior and the user interface of the future cars. These technologies are crammed into a new BMW Vision Car concept.

The main highlights of BMW’s CES 2016 program include the demonstration of an advanced AirTouch system which is a fancier version of the hand gesture control we are fairly familiar with.  AirTouch allows the display in a vehicle to be operated like a touchscreen without actually having to make contact with the surface.

The way it works, sensors record the hand movements in the area between the central console and the interior mirror. So you’re going to be waving your arms about a lot, wondering what was the problem with the good old knob.

But AirTouch was not advanced enough for a show like CES 2016, which is why the Germans are also showcasing a new BMW Gesture Control with 3D control in the latest BMW 7 Series. According to BMW: “sensors are installed in the area of the instrument dashboard which respond to hand movements here and therefore permit three-dimensional control. A movement of the hand or a gesture activates the surfaces on the large panorama display.”

The general idea here is to reduce the number of steps needed to make a selection. But the system will probably has a complex learning curve, just like the iDrive system when it was first introduced.

PostHeaderIcon Electric VW Camper Van Teased for CES 2016

Electric VW Camper Van

According to Darwin’s theory of evolution, as time goes by existing species mutate and change until an entirely new one emerges that is completely different, and superior, to the last. Thus the old pot-smoking hippies have evolved into today’s uber geeks, and so VW decided they should update the old camper van to suit the needs of the new group.

They have come up with an electric VW camper van which they will showcase, in concept form, at the Consumer Electronics Show, CES, in Las Vegas next month. Now, there is more to this high-tech machine than being just a modern interpretation of a classic design. According to Volkswagen, the electric Microbus “marks the beginning of a new era of affordable long-distance electromobility.”

What’s more, the new electric camper van showcases the latest developments in autonomous driving and in-car infotainment, technologies VW says are on the verge of being launched onto the market.

The looks of the new electric Microbus camper van previews those of the production model, and as for the powertrain, it could potentially make it intact as it’s the same system used in electric Audi e-tron models. VW claims a range of up to 500 kilometers thanks to the new lithium-ion battery pack used in the van which, if true, makes it perfect for amateur music bands who want to channel the 60s on their way to gigs, smoking e-cigarettes and having protected sex in the back of the Microbus!

PostHeaderIcon Rinspeed Etos Teased for CES 2016

Rinspeed Etos-teaser-1

Geneva Motor Show is usually the venue where the crazy Swiss company Rinspeed present their outlandish idea. This time though, they have picked the CES 2016 show in Las Vegas to present their latest creation, the Rinspeed Etos (?tos).

The reason for that could be because Rinspeed Etos is not so much a car as a gadget, designed to make tech-crazed geeks all wet in the pants. This thing takes reinforces Rinspeed’s obsession with driverless cars and takes it to a whole new level. The Etos has an adaptive autopilot capable of learning; the interior adapts to the driving mode; and yes, that is a drone complete with a landing pad on the back. This drone can apparently do your shopping for you, fetching items you have ordered online.

Rinspeed Etos-teaser-2

Rinspeed Etos is no doubt very clever, as Rinspeed products always are. But it is also way ahead of its time. We are pretty sure it is illegal to fly a drone while driving, and a steering wheel that folds into the dashboard when you are in autonomous mode may not pass many safety tests. But there are some features the Etos has which could be adapted in normal production cars – features like the Harman Connected Car technologies which connects with the occupants of the car in a “thinking, courteous and anticipatory manner.”

Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht saud: “The major and especially the disruptive innovations in future automotive engineering will come from the digital realm. That is why all major manufacturers and suppliers are now present at the CES Consumer Electronic Show.”
