“We’ve been following Colorado since its introduction, and the ZR2 really captured our attention. As this is the first Chevrolet vehicle we’ve given the AEV treatment to, we wanted to do something special with the industry’s first use of hot-stamped Boron steel. We also expect that Colorado drivers will love the added ruggedness of our front and rear bumpers on ZR2 Bison.”

We have seen the first glimpses of the truck with the Colorado ZR2 AEV concept that was unveiled at the 2017 Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas. Luckily, the process of fruition and transformation into a proper production model did not last too long. Big suspension upgrades

One of two Chevrolet Colorado concepts that were presented at the 2017 SEMA Auto Show is reportedly headed to production. That’s the word coming out of Off-road.com, which alluded to the Colorado ZR2 AEV as the concept that could be turned into a full-blown production model. Specific details have yet to be revealed, but if it’s true, the production version of the Colorado ZR2 AEV will probably carry the “ZR2 Bison” name.

Living in Australia and feeling depressed over Holden being shut down? Can’t get your V-8 fix now that Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) is no longer building cool, beefed-up versions of the Commodore? Well, here’s some good news for ya: HSV just announced that it will convert the Camaro SS to right-hand drive for the Australian market starting 2018. The announcement is part of a new agreement struck between HSV and Holden, which will work together to bring new GM vehicles Down Under. The brands also unveiled a joint logo that now contains the lion and helmet used by Holden and HSV in the past.

The Camaro will be brought to Australia in SS trim, powered by the naturally aspirated, 6.2-liter V-8. No four-cylinder or V-6 options, but also no ZL1. It will also be the higher-level 2SS version with various performance and convenience upgrades. No info on pricing yet, but expect it to be more expensive than the competing Ford Mustang GT after the right-hand-drive conversion. Production will begin in July 2018.

Alongside the Camaro SS, HSV will also modify the the Colorado and heavy-duty Silverado 2500HD for right-hand-drive use. The Colorado will also wear a “SportsCat” badge and will continue to use a Holden logo as it did until now. The Silverado 2500HD, on the other hand, will sold as a Chevrolet, just like the Camaro SS. The Colorado will be available in two versions, but none will get more power. However, a hotter version of the truck is likely to be followed as a direct rival for the upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor. The Colorado SportsCat will go into production in late January as HSV first Chevrolet conversion. Silverado conversions will commence in April 2018.

2017 Chevrolet ZR2 Race Development Truck

Chevy brought two custom Colorado ZR2 pickups to SEMA this year with some heavy modifications that make them even better off-road. One was built in collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles and meant for over-landing while this, the Colorado ZR2 Race Development Truck, is built for high-speed desert running. In fact, many of the upgrades on this truck were first tested on Chad Hall’s Colorado ZR2, which ran in the “Best In The Desert” race series.

The list of modifications isn’t overly extensive, showing just how capable the Colorado ZR2 is from the factory. The truck’s crown jewel is its DSSV spool valve shock absorbers from Multimatic. DSSV shocks were developed for supercars and F1 race teams, so its adoption for an off-roader was unconventional. The factory truck also has better ground clearance than a regular Colorado, along with bespoke bodywork that improved approach and departure angles. Adding to its capability are front and rear electronic differential lockers – something not found on any other Colorado. Still, Chevy improved on the ZR2’s design for hard-core racing.

Chevrolet started off with a stock Colorado ZR2 with the 3.6-liter V-6 and crew cab. They then added a 1.5-inch body lift to help fit larger, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires. The stock wheels were retained, but wheel spacers and longer wheel studs were added to widen the truck’s already wide stance. Underneath, the rear DSSV shocks got skid plates for added protection from trail damage. A skid plate was also added to the rear differential. An upgraded steel driveshaft was added, too.

Suspension enhancements make the biggest difference, however. A long-arm suspension kit was added to the independent front suspension, and long-travel versions of the DSSV shocks were added. The shocks also have a slightly modified tuning to better handle high-speed runs in the sand.

An off-road air intake was added, as well, helping filter out dirt and sand. On the other side of the V-6, Chevy added a performance exhaust system. There’s no word on how these changes affected power output, but we’d certainly guess the 3.6-liter makes more horsepower and torque.

All told, the Colorado ZR2 Race Development Truck is a beast for high-speed desert running, while staying close to the factory ZR2 anyone can buy. Chevy undoubtedly is preparing for battle against Ford’s upcoming Ranger Raptor – a mid-size pickup with parts styled after the F-150 Raptor. It seems Chevy is definitely ready to throw some punches.

2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 AEV Concept

While SEMA certainly has plenty to offer when it comes builds that are low and fast, the annual vehicle modification extravaganza also offers loads of rough-and-ready off-roaders, many of which are rocking big suspension and the right stuff to tackle whatever Mother Nature has in store. The Chevy Colorado ZR2 AEV Concept is one good example, which looks to add to the Bow Tie’s already impressive performance truck cred as one part in a duo of custom Colorado concepts. Unlike its desert-running counterpart, the AEV focuses more on overland capability, adding robust off-roading exterior protection, enormous 35-inch tires (plus the requisite suspension lift), and even a fridge in case you get hungry while stomping around the great outdoors.

And that’s about right, considering AEV stands for American Expedition Vehicles, a private Montana-based manufacturer that’s been making comprehensive off-roader packages for the past two decades. “Our collaboration taught us that Colorado makes a great platform for building an off-road truck that can take you as far out as you want to go, safely,” says AEV’s founder, Dave Harriton. It most definitely is. Like any proper off-roading truck, the AEV Concept mounts some seriously impressive tires and wheels, with 35-inch BF Goodrich KM2 mud and terrain rubber wrapped around AEV’s custom DualSport beadlock wheels. Complementing the wheel and tire package are new bumpers front and rear, once again customized by AEV for superlative off-roading performance, plus the necessary high-clearance fender flares. Thick underbody protection, including a rear differential cover, keeps all the vital components safe from wayward bits of terrain.

Out in back is an Expedition bed rack, an indispensable component considering how much gear this thing is packing (more on that in a bit). Finishing off the exterior upgrades is LED lighting, both front and back.

You Said Something About Gear?

Yeah, and there’s a lot of it. Check out the above-pictured panel mounted just behind the driver’s side taillight – it looks like it offers all kinds of amenities, such as an external source of electricity, a source for water, and an air compressor.

Chevy also says the AEV concept comes with aluminum storage cases from Equipt and a James Baroud USA awning for the bed, plus NATO-style fuel cans for extra go-juice in reserve. Recovery shackles, a Hi-Lift jack, a Warn 9.5XP-S winch, and MAXTRAX recovery devices were also added. Finally, an ARB refrigerator and freezer keeps the rations fresh and tasty.

What About The Hard Bits And Oily Stuff?

You probably noticed that high-rise snorkel snaking its way up the passenger-side A-pillar. In addition to blessing the AEV Concept with additional water wading capability, the tube directs fresh air to a 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel powerplant under the hood. No word on whether or not the engine gets a tune or additional performance mods, but in stock form it creates 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

Much more impressive than the engine is the suspension set-up, which utilizes a comprehensive Chevrolet Performance system incorporating plunging front half-shafts, stiffer high-angle tie rods, front and rear jounce shocks, and a high-angle upper ball joint. There’s also an anti-wrap link and long-travel rear leaf spring. Custom Multimatic DSSVTM shocks finish it off.

All told, this thing is an overlanding beast. Impressive stuff all around.

PostHeaderIcon Hagerty Has These 2017-2018MY Cars On Track To Be Future Collectibles

2017 has been quite the year for the automotive industry. We’ve seen hypercars make their debuts. We’ve seen incredible advancements and electrification and autonomous driving technology. Heck, we’ve even seen deceased brands come back to life – shout out to TVR! – with a vengeance. One of the best parts of all these releases is that at some point, some of them will inevitably skip the depreciation curve and become collectible cars. The trick is figuring out which ones will be able to navigate down that road, and if you’re trying to do that, there’s no better source of authority in matters pertaining to the collector car market than Hagerty.

It’s safe to say that when the insurance company talks, all of our ears perk up. If it says that one of today’s models is on the inside track to be a future classic, there’s a good chance that it could turn into one. Ok, so enough small talk. Hagerty’s has already released its picks of 2017-2018 models that are trending on the right path. It’s not a guarantee that these cars will earn collectible status in the future, but having Hagerty’s stamp of approval goes a long way in shaping the opinions of car collectors all over the world.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Current price: $61,140

We’ll start with a car that’s expected to be a collectible in the future. There are no surprises here, at least not when the car in question is the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which has been described as the most powerful factory-built Camaro in history. It also comes with arguably the most comprehensive aerodynamic package ever given to a Camaro. The result is a car that not only tips the scales at 200 pounds less than its predecessor, but also has power numbers that add up to 650 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque. These figures translate to an acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds to 60 mph and 11.4 seconds at 127 mph to a quarter-mile. It may not be as powerful as the Challenger SRT Demon, but rest assured, Camaro collectors from all corners of the world would be smart to get the 2018 ZL1 while it’s price tag of just over $60,000 is still where it is now. Wait a few years and you might end up being forced to pay far more than that.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

Current price: $65,450

It is a bit surprising that Hagerty did not include the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon – or even the Challenger Hellcat – in its list. Is it possible that both Challenger models are overhyped? That’s a question for another time, though, because this spot is dedicated to the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. It’s not the most powerful Corvette in the market today – that would be the ZR1 – but the Corvette Grand Sport is arguably the best Corvette for your money. It’s priced at a shade over $65,000, and for that amount, you stand to get an all-American sports car that features a 6.2-liter V-8 engine with 460 horsepower on tap. Beyond the numbers, the Corvette Grand Sport also has the chops to handle its business against European sports car elite. Very few American-made sports cars are capable of doing that, but the Corvette Grand Sport can do it. Add the nostalgia that’s traditionally associated with Corvette models and the Grand Sport is shaping up to be one of the best sports car purchases today.

Fiat Abarth 124 Spider

Price: $28,195

Is it a surprise that of the ten cars on this list, three of them are entry-level sports cars that cost somewhere in the vicinity of $30,000? I don’t think it is, especially when you see the three sports cars that Hagerty identified. One of them is the Fiat Abarth 124 Spider, the spiffy roadster that brought back the now-iconic 124 Spider name. It says a lot about the new 124 Spider’s predecessor that it lasted almost 20 years on the road (from 1966 to 1985) and is now considered a collectible piece. The new Spider isn’t the most powerful car out there, but with 164-horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, it has enough juice to become this generation’s go-to Italian roadster. It’s even capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, so that’s another feather in the cap of the sports car. Ultimately though, the new 124 Spider will be judged by how it’s going to handle the test of time. Can it live up to its predecessor’s status and become a collectible itself? It’s too early to say now, but give it 20 years, and the conversation could turn into which of the 124 Spiders is the more collectible version.

Mazda MX-5 Miata RF

Price: $31,555

This feels like a cop-out answer given how Mazda’s MX-5 sports car is already considered a collectible. But to make it more interesting, Hagerty put the spotlight squarely on the shoulders of the MX-5 RF variant. I personally think it’s a good call because the MX-5 RF has history on its side for being the first MX-5 to feature a targa roof. Think about that for a second. The MX-5 has been around for almost 30 years and it’s only now that a targa roof version is created. Add that to the revered legacy of the sports car and this is probably one of Hagerty’s easiest calls. It doesn’t even matter that the MX-5 RF has a 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G engine that pumps out 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Those figures are just bonuses to what ultimately be the MX-5 RF’s legacy: it’s a Miata that has “first of its kind” attached to its name. That kind of distinction is tantamount to a fast-track to “collectible” status.

Toyota 86

Price: $26,500

I’m actually surprised by this one. Hagerty legitimately thinks the Toyota 86 has the potential to be a collectible car. It’s not that I don’t like the 86, but ever since it was released in 2012, the only thing that sticks to me about the 86 is how much Toyota has left – and continues to leave – off the table as far as allowing the car to reach its full potential. I think Toyota has short-changed the 86 to the point that the lack of any meaningful improvements in the five years it’s been in the market will hamper its long-term outlook as a collectible. For sure, it’s a great entry-level sports car that just about anyone can buy these days. But the 86 could’ve been more if Toyota had just given it more freedom to realize its sports car lineage. There’s still room for that to happen, but with the return of the Supra, it’s hard to imagine the 86 being more than what it already is. Again, it’s a good sports car to own. It just could’ve been a lot better. Regardless, Hagerty is a lot more bullish on its long-term outlook than I am so I’m going to trust its judgment on this one.

Audi TT-RS

We’re going a segment up in the sports car market for the next two cars on this list. Unlike the Toyota 86, the inclusion of the Audi TT-RS on this list is far from a surprise. In fact, it’s another one of Hagerty’s easy calls. It’s true that the Mazda MX-5 Miata has garnered much of the attention as far as being one of the most engaging sports cars in the past 20 or so years. But let’s not sleep on the Audi TT-RS either because it’s just as distinctive in terms of driver engagement as the MX-5. It doesn’t even matter that the TT-RS costs twice as that of the MX-5. Their two sports cars that occupy two different segments, and more is that evident than the numbers the Audi can offer on the table. Think about it. It has 400 horsepower coming from a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five engine. It’s got a sprint-to-60-mph time of 3.7 seconds. It’s even dressed like a proper sports car, thanks in large part to an aerodynamic kit that makes it look like a baby Audi R8. All plaudits aside, the TT-RS’s long-term outlook is bright because it really is a supercar dressed up in a sports car body. As far as “collectible” potential is concerned, the Audi TT-RS is dripping with it.

Porsche 718 Cayman

It’s hard to imagine a Porsche not having collectible potential. It’s even harder to imagine a Porsche not being a collectible when its name is taken from a legendary race car that won the 12 Hours of Sebring once and the Targa Florio three times. That’s what we have with the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman. It has turbocharged boxer engine that pumps out 300 horsepower and it’s got an assortment of Porsche’s class-leading technology at its disposal. The result is a sports car that not only serves as a cheap alternative to the Porsche 911, but just as important, it carries with it the legacy of a racer that lived up to its name. Hard to think that the 718 Cayman can’t do the same, right?

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

We’re already up to the eighth car on this list and this is the first four-door model to make it. Goes to show how popular performance cars are as potential collectible cars. Is it a surprise that Hagerty identified the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio as a potential future classic? I’m actually on the same page here, and it’s not just because I count myself as a fanboy of the Giulia Quadrifoglio. First, let’s talk about what’s at the heart of it: a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 that has the fingerprints of Ferrari all over it. The result is an output of 505 horsepower and a sprint-to-60-time of 3.8 seconds. Outside of the numbers, you have to look at its impact, not only as Alfa’s new flagship sedan but also as a representation of the automaker’s return to the US market. If the Giulia Quadrifoglio hits big here in the US, it has the credentials and the legacy to prove Hagerty right. I wouldn’t put it past Alfa Romeo to make that happen.

Pick-up trucks are probably the last type of car you’d see on a “future collectible” list, and yet here we are. The Ford Raptor isn’t an old model – it’s only been around since 2010 – so it doesn’t have the legacy of a model like the Mazda MX-5 or even the Fiat 124 Spider. But in the short amount of time that it’s been around, it’s arguably become one of the most popular production pickups in the business. At the very least, the first-generation model of the Raptor is already being singled out as a potential collectible, and that model only went out of production a few years ago to give way to a second-generation model that’s already being touted as better in every conceivable way compared to its predecessor. This is the what the Ford SVT Raptor has done to the segment. If any of you have any doubts about the Raptor’s chances of turning into a collectible, try looking for one that’s for sale at a decent price. You might find it harder than you expected.

It may not be as popular – or as big – as the Ford Raptor SVT, but the Chevrolet Colorado more than holds its own in the mid-size pickup segment where the ZR2 trim is holding court as one of the best picks in the market today. It’s not the most powerful pick-up, nor is it the cheapest. But it has a suite of tech and aerodynamic features –
dynamic shocks, electronic locking front/rear differentials, increased ride height, and widened track – that has it on Hagerty’s short list of potential future collectibles. You may not agree with it, but the insurance company has the pulse of this market and if it thinks that the Colorado ZR2 could have the same impact as the Raptor in its segment, then we could be looking at a spot-on prediction from Hagerty.

Chevrolet is now offering two new special editions for the high-performance off-road Colorado ZR2 mid-size pickup. The Dusk Edition brings all the same black accents and the sports bar but allows customers to choose any of the eight other paint colors available on the standard Colorado ZR2. Both the Midnight and Dusk Editions come with new five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels painted in black.

The Colorado ZR2 is one of the hottest trucks on the market right now, and Chevy is hoping the added special editions will pour gasoline on the ZR2 fire. Obviously, special edition models tend to sell roughly twice as quickly as standard pickups, so it’s no doubt why Chevys bean counters are happy to offer the blacked-out packages.

According to Jim Campbell, Chevy’s U.S. VP of truck strategy, performance vehicles, and motorsports, “The Colorado ZR2 Midnight and Dusk Edition models offer customers even more personalization choices from the only company with three distinct trucks: midsize, full-size and full-size heavy-duty. Chevrolet offers more choices because the truck market is too diverse for a ‘one size fits most’ strategy.” Basically, it boils down to customers feeling exclusive when they buy and drive a special edition truck.

Chevrolet didn’t announce pricing or availability of the 2018 Colorado ZR2 special editions, but we expect them to arrive in showrooms sometime in December or early in 2018. Pricing will likely be steep, ranging between $1,200 and $2,000. And aside from what comes with these special edition packages, all other options will be available on the ZR2, including both engine choices.

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a no-holds-barred attempt at a high-performance off-road pickup. While Ford has seen fantastic success with the full-size F-150 Raptor, Chevy is taking a different route by using the Colorado in the mid-size category. The smaller truck is arguably better since its smaller dimensions make it easier to drive on tight trails.

What separates the ZR2 from a run-of-the-mill Colorado Z71 is its wider stance, special shock absorbers, locking differentials, high-clearance bumpers, wide fenders, and grippy Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires on ZR2-specific wheels.

Let’s break things down.

The ZR2 is 3.5-inches wider than a standard Colorado, giving it a more planted foundation. The suspension is also two inches higher than stock, giving it more ground clearance and wheel travel. The underbody is protected from damage via an upgraded aluminum skid plate under the radiator and engine oil pan. The skid plate also adds to the macho appearance of the truck. There is also a skid plate protecting the transfer case, too.

The Colorado ZR2 features front and rear locking differentials. These electronically actuate and keep both left and right tires on an axle turning at the same speed, regardless of wheel slip. With the two-speed 4WD transfer case locked into 4WD High or Low range, the ZR2 sends equal power to all four wheel no matter what – an extremely handy feature when traversing loose terrain or slick rocks. The rear axle is also unique to the ZR2 and runs a stout 3.42:1 gear ratio.

The ZR2 also boats an off-road drive mode than reworks programming for the traction controls, ABS, stability control, transmission shift patterns, and throttle response.

However, the biggest performance upgrade on the ZR2 is its DSSV Spool Valve dampers from Multimatic. This is the first off-road application of spool valve shocks, which have a rich yet relatively short history in F1 race cars, supercars, and high-end track-day brawlers. Chevy has experience with spool valve shocks, though, as the fifth-generation Chevy Camaro Z/28 used them. In the ZR2’s application, the spool valves are designed to give highly controlled rates of drop and compression throughout its travel, all while staying cool no matter the ambient temperature, how rugged the terrain, or how fast the truck is traveling. In short, they are the ZR2’s magic bullet. They also give the truck instant street cred among sports car and racing enthusiasts.

And as mentioned the Colorado ZR2 can be had with either the 3.6-liter gasoline V-6 or the 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel. The V-6 offers 308 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 275 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. It comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The turbodiesel is the extra-cost option and comes with 181 horsepower at 3,400 rpm, and more importantly, 369 pound-feet of torque at only 2,000 rpm. A six-speed automatic comes with the baby D-Max. For those torn between which engine is right, the V-6 is best for high-speed running where big revs are needed. The turbodiesel is best for those situations where low-end torque is king – situations like rock crawling, towing, vehicle recovery, and of course, getting decent fuel economy.

As for pricing of the current 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 without any special edition package adding cost, the MSRP starts at $41,550 for the Extended Cab and V-6 configuration. Those needing four real doors will want the $43,175 Crew Cab. Adding the turbodiesel to the Extended Cab pushes the price to $44,655 and $46,280 for the Crew Cab. Those aren’t cheap prices, but they do undercut the Ford F-150 Raptor’s base sticker price of $49,785 for the SuperCab model. Option for the bigger SuperCrew costs even more at $52,770. Check every option box, and the Raptor will quickly sail towards $70,000. That makes the Colorado ZR2 look like a bargain, doesn’t it?

Chevrolet marks its 100th year of building trucks in 2018, and as expected, the automaker will be throwing itself a celebration. To help commemorate building more than 85 million trucks over a century, Chevy is launching a special edition for the 2018 Silverado half-ton and Colorado mid-size pickups. Called the Centennial Edition, these one-year-only models come with several unique features that help Chevy express its accomplishment and its loyal customers show off their dedication to the blue-blooded American brand.

“The Chevy Trucks Centennial is a huge milestone for us, and is equally important to our customers,” said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Trucks Advertising and Marketing director. “That’s why we will be celebrating 100 years of Chevy Trucks over the course of the next 100 days. It’s important that we share this celebration with our loyal customers who have helped us achieve this accomplishment.” Mixed into Chevy’s celebration is the national launch of its Chevy Truck Legends program, which honors loyal customers. The iconic Chevy bowtie also gets a throwback makeover for 2018, recalling the first bowtie design introduced by Chevrolet co-founder William C. Durant in late 1913. The bowtie wears a throwback color called Centennial Blue, which matches the paint color found on early Chevy trucks. The dark blue hue is the paint color used on the Silverado and Colorado Centennial Editions. Chevrolet is limiting the Centennial Edition to the 2018 Silverado Crew Cab in the LTZ Z71 trim. That means it comes with four doors and room for five or six people, depending on the front seat configuration. The body will wear the special Centennial Blue paint and have chrome touches that include the side mirror caps, door moldings, door handles, tow hooks, grille inserts, and the center section of the bumper. The exclusive dark gray 22-inch wheels also have chrome inserts, on the center cap, and the five lug nuts. They come wrapped in all-terrain tires, too. Commemorative “100 Year” badges with the old-school bowtie accent the doors. The cargo bed even gets some love with the heritage bowtie imprinted on the bulkhead under the spray-on bed liner.

Inside, the Silverado gets a chrome heritage bowtie on the steering wheel and embedded onto the all-weather floor mats. The rest of the interior remains unchanged from the LTZ Z71 trim, meaning it comes with leather seats and accents of wood and aluminum. Chevy’s 8.0-inch MyLink infotainment system is standard, as is dual-zone climate controls and the upgraded 4.2-inch driver information display in the gauge cluster.

The Silverado 1500 LTZ Z71 comes standard with 4WD and the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8. Customers can upgrade to the 420-horsepower 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8. Chevy hasn’t announced pricing for the 2018 Silverado Centennial Edition, but a standard 2018 Silverado configured identically starts at $50,485. Chevy dealerships will begin receiving Silverado Centennial Editions in October of 2017.

Chevy gives more cab options with the Colorado’s version of the Centennial Edition. Customs can order either the Extended Cab or Crew Cab. The Z71 trim is the starting point, meaning it’s the top trim of the Colorado, save for the hard-core off-roader Colorado ZR2.

Regardless of cab size, the Colorado Centennial Edition comes with that Centennial Blue exterior paint, a body-color rear bumper, and the heritage bowtie badges. The same is true for the “100 Years” emblem on the front doors. Similar chrome work accents the side mirror caps, door handles, lower window trim, and fog light surrounds. The heritage bowtie under the spray-on bed liner is seen here, too, tying the Colorado and Silverado together. Unique 18-inch, five-spoke wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires finish off the outside.

Customers who get the Crew Cab will also have the option of upgrading from the 3.6-liter V-6 to the 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel for $3,585.

Eight pickups were tested, including both extended and crew cab versions of the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier.

Of the eight trucks tested, four did not earn the IIHS’ best rating of “Good” in the front small-overlap crash test. These are the extended cab version of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, along with both cab configurations of the aging Nissan Frontier. The GM twins both earned an Acceptable rating, while the Nissan only earned a Marginal. The Frontier continued to score low in both the structural category and in the possibility of the driver sustaining lower leg and foot injuries. That’s not surprising considering the Frontier is 12 years old, having last been redesigned for the 2005 model year. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab earned a Good overall rating and a Good rating in each sub-category except for an Acceptable rating in potential lower leg and foot injuries. Even still, the Tacoma lacks any front crash prevention systems, excluding it from the IIHS’ Top Safety awards. Only the GM twins offer any such system, and even it only alerts the driver rather than stopping the truck, earning it only a Basic rating. Lastly, not a single mid-size pickup scored better than a Poor rating in headlight performance. It is understandable, though, as the IIHS only began testing headlights for the 2017 model year.

PostHeaderIcon Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Makes Racing Debut At Best in the Desert

The Chevy Colorado ZR2 will finally have a chance to prove its off-road chops in a sanctioned race this weekend. Chad Hall of Hall Racing will drive a moderately modified 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 in the General Tire “Vegas to Reno” portion of the Best in the Desert racing series. The 550-mile, off-road race will trek through the Nevada desert starting at Las Vegas on Friday, August 19 and end in Reno on Sunday morning. More than 350 vehicles will compete in what’s regarded as the longest and most grueling off-road race within American borders.

But even folks who aren’t into racing should like this news: Chevy is working with Hall Racing and will closely monitor the Colorado ZR2 and its array of custom parts. Should they perform well, they have a potential to get bolted to a future version of the Colorado ZR2. Russ O’Blenes, the director of GM’s Performance Variants, Parts and Motorsports division said, “The components being tested on this truck are ultimately intended to take the already-exceptional off-road capability of the Colorado to the next level. Racing them allows us to quickly understand their performance attributes and reliability in the extreme environment of off-road racing, ensuring the highest performing components for Colorado customers.”

Chevrolet is taking the 2017 Chicago Auto Show by storm with no fewer than the nine cars under the Redline special-edition badge. First shown in concept form at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the Redline package found its way on nine cars, trucks, and crossovers.

The vehicles that benefit from the bundle and are on display in Chicago are the Cruze LT, Malibu LT, Camaro LT and SS, Trax LT, Equinox LT, Traverse Premier, Colorado LT, Silverado Double Cab LT Z71, and Silverado Crew Cab LTZ Z71. The Cruze LT Redline is available in both sedan and hatchback versions, while the Camaro LT/SS Redline can be had both coupe and convertible body styles.

“Redline is another example of Chevrolet bringing SEMA concepts to showrooms,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet. “The SEMA show has proven to be a great way to identify customization trends in the industry, and quickly apply those trends to our most popular Chevrolet models. Based on the strong interest Redline attracted at the show, we believe they will be very popular with customers looking for standout cars, trucks, and crossovers.”

All Redline models are fitted with black wheels with distinct red hash marks, black nameplates with a red outline, blacked-out grilles, and black Chevrolet “bowtie” logos. Customers can also opt for red tow hooks on Silverado and Colorado trucks and unique black hash marks above the front wheels on Camaro pony cars.

The Silverado Redline is already available for purchase, but you’ll have to wait a while longer for the rest of the lineup to become available. Chevrolet says that all Redline cars will be dealerships by the end of the 2017 calendar year. Pricing information is not yet available.

These are exciting times for truck enthusiasts who also like off-roading. The 2017 Ford Raptor is out, launching the second generation of Ford’s halo F-150. Toyota has its new-for-2017 Tacoma TRD Pro that’s based on the new-for-2016 Tacoma. And Chevy comes late to the party with its Colorado ZR2 – a production truck based on the concept version from 2014. These three trucks represent the upper crust of the pickup segment. It’s a prestigious group that’s focused on going fast over rough terrain while still conquering the daily commute.

The Raptor might be the premiere pickup, having birthed this niche segment back in 2010, but the Toyota and Chevy new-comers aren’t slackers. In fact, thanks to their smaller sizes compared to the full-size Raptor, these mid-size pickups are more agile and can fit down narrower trails. The famed Rubicon train in California, or instance, is too narrow for the Raptor’s immensely wide track. The Tacoma TRD Pro and Colorado ZR2, however, should have no problem traversing the tight terrain.

The Toyota and Chevy are also less expensive (or rumored to be) than the Raptor. That puts them basically in a head-to-head fight for customers. Typical things like design, features, and brand loyalty goes a long way in choosing which truck is best, but a more objective comparison should be made. That’s especially true for someone who’s ready to pull the trigger on a purchase.

PostHeaderIcon GM and U.S. Army Developing Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Cell

General Motors announced they are working with the the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center (TARDEC) to convert a conventional Chevy Colorado pickup truck to a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Then the Army is going to test this one-off Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Cell for 12 months and report on its performance.

This joint project is a match made in heaven, as fuel cell technology is an important part of future plans for both GM and the U.S. Military. What’s more, GM and TARDEC have fuel cell development and research facilities located 20 minutes apart in Pontiac and Warren, Michigan. So it only made sense for them to join forces for a project that would benefit both parties.

The Chevrolet Colorado Fuel Cell will run on a commercial hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. That means the research vehicle has real production values for GM. By basing their HFC systems on commercial units, the Army, too, can reduce the cost of development for their own systems. Hydrogen Fuel Cell has many benefits for both military and civilian users, such as very high low-end torque capability useful in off-road environments, exportable electric power and quiet operation.

“Hydrogen fuel cell technology is important to GM’s advanced propulsion portfolio, and this enables us to put our technology to the test in a vehicle that will face punishing military duty cycles,” said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM’s Global Fuel Cell Engineering activities.

Further expanding their truck lineup and giving customers greater variety, General Motors Announced the launch of the Chevrolet Colorado Duramax Diesel midsize pickup. The main advantageous of this model includes better capability and efficiency compared to models with similarly-sized gasoline engine.

The engine in the new Chevrolet Colorado Duramax Diesel is a 2.8 liter turbo-diesel unit developing 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque (500 Nm). That means this baby truck can tow a whopping 7,700 pounds (3,492 kg) on 2WD models and still be lighter on fuel than its petrol-powered cousin. That is why the Duramax is priced $3,730 more than a comparably equipped 3.6L V-6 model.
