PostHeaderIcon Dodge Dart GTS

The 1968 Dodge Dart GTS is considered a compact muscle car, one that solidified Dodge’s performance-oriented image among the young buyers of the ’60s. It featured a boxy look by ’68, which was carried all the way to the end of the car’s lifespan, but what it didn’t gain in looks it more than backed up in performance.

The Dodge Dart was originally introduced as a smaller full-size model in 1960 as Dodge’s entry-level car. Back then, the Dodge brand was the meat in Chrysler Corporation’s sandwich that placed Plymouth as the budget brand and Chrysler at the top of the pile. However, the Dart went on to become the model that bridged the gap in luxury between Dodge and Plymouth.

The Dart never got anywhere near the area of the market governed by Dodge’s Charger, but that’s also what saw it gather a different kind of fanbase that wanted enjoyable performance for a reduced MSRP. In 1967, the fourth-generation Dart was introduced and, by 1968, the biggest engine you can get on a two-door Dart was the 383 cubic-inch, 6.3-liter V-8, aside from the Hurst-installed 426 cubic-inch, 7.0-liter, Hemi V-8.

Introduced in 2012, the modern-day Dart revived the iconic nameplate Dodge used between 1960 and 1976 for a range of vehicles offered in two-door, four-door, and wagon configurations. At first a full-size car, the Dart was redesigned into a compact in 1963 and remained in that segment until it was discontinued in 1976. In 2012, the Dart returned as a compact sedan built on a slightly enlarged Fiat Compact platform dubbed Compact U.S. Wide. Designed as a fuel-efficient proposition for the compact market, the Dart wasn’t exactly popular among U.S. customers, selling less than 90,000 units a year between 2013 and 2015.

Recently, FCA announced that the Dart will be discontinued soon due to the company’s decision to redirect its resources toward building crossover vehicles. In March 2016, FCA seemed to reconsider its radical resolution and began to look for a partner that would continue to manufacture the Dart. While the fate of the compact sedan has yet to be decided officially, Dodge is simplifying the Dart lineup for the reminder of the 2016 model year. Previously available in five trims, the Dart has been reduced to only three models. In short, Dodge is now offering a trim level for each drivetrain, which makes more sense given the nameplate’s sluggish sales.

But, fewer models doesn’t mean a poor offer. The Dart still benefits from several customization options, including the Chrome, Rallye, and Black packages, as well as the extra goodies that can be purchased via Mopar. Let’s have a closer look at the 2016 Dart and find out what the new lineup has to offer.

PostHeaderIcon FCA Prepares To Kill Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200

Fiat-Chrysler is embarking on a new adventure as part of an updated five-year business plan that CEO Sergio Marchionne outlined in a recent presentation with investors. As with most updates of this type, changes have been made in the direction of the company and two models, the Dodge Dart and the Chrysler 200, have become unwitting casualties.

According to Marchionne, FCA will begin focusing its energy and resources into building more trucks and utility vehicles in response to what he describes as a “permanent shift in demand” in the market. Unfortunately for both the Dart and the 200, the pedestrian sales numbers of both cars made them expendable and with no signs in the horizon of both models improving their appeal to the public. FCA is now preparing its shovels for the two vehicles arguably untimely deaths.

With the Dart and the 200 out of the picture, FCA can realign its facilities to accommodate the production of more Jeep and Ram models. The company’s plants in Illinois where the Dart and the 200 were being built will now be used to increase the production of the Jeep Cherokee and Ram 1500.

It’s an ignominious exit for both models, especially for the Dart, which only returned to the automotive scene in 2012 after not being around since 1976. Dodge even had huge plans for the model at the time of its supposed comeback, even going so far as building numerous race and concept variants. But with the model turning out to be a sales dud, parent company FCA has deemed it – and the 200 – as baggage that it doesn’t want to carry moving forward.

PostHeaderIcon Dodge Dart GLH Concept

The Dodge Omni first broke into the auto scene back in 1977 but it wasn’t until 1984 when the performance-oriented Omni GLH (Goes Like Hell) was unleashed to the public. In its short lifespan – it only lasted until 1986 – the Omni GLH was able to create a loyal fan base that included no less than Carroll Shelby himself. In fact, the final 500 units of the 1985 Omni GLH-T were all sold to Shelby, who in turn, modified them to become the 1986 Shelby GLHS (Goes Like Hell S’More).

It’s an incredible history for a car that lasted only a few years. That history has remained untouched, at least until now. Yes, Dodge is bringing back the classic GLH name at the 2015 SEMA Auto Show in the form of the Dodge Dart GLH Concept.

For all intents and purposes, the Dart GLH Concept is a tribute car to the original Omni GLH, a cult classic that has somehow never received its just due. It’s a fitting homage to one of Dodge’s most underrated classics and it shows throughout the Dart GLH Concept’s dramatic styling. The original Omni GLH may have been lost to history and the occasional wall posters hanging on someone’s room, but its memory now lives on through the Dart GLH Concept.

Work on the Dart GLH Concept was done with the help of Mopar as shown by the extensive amount of new components and accessories from Chrysler’s in-house performance division.

PostHeaderIcon Drive Reviews A Classic Dodge Dart: Video

When it was originally introduced in 1960, the Dodge Dart was just a low-priced, full-size alternative to the top-of-the-line Polara. The first-gen Dart quickly became a sales success, but Dodge decided to downsize it for 1962, and yet again for 1963, when it became a compact. More changes occurred with the fourth-generation car, launched in 1967, which also saw the introduction of bigger, more powerful V-8s. By the 1970s, the Dart coupe had joined the muscle car wars by receiving the 440 V-8. Nearly five decades later, fourth-gen Darts are getting the love they deserve from Mopar enthusiasts, spending their days as either neatly restored cars or beefed-up restomods. Such an example is this menacing, all-black Dart built by Alloy Motors’ Geoff Gates.

Even though it sports a murdered-out appearance and rear drag slicks, the Dart is actually more of a traditional restoration than a modern-day build. Most of its factory parts are still in place, especially inside the cabin, with only a few go-fast parts, mostly from Edelbrock, added under the hood. Power comes from a 5.9-liter V-8, one of the 10 engines Dodge offered for the fourth-gen Dart, that cranks out a little more than 300 horsepower. Not exactly spectacular by today’s standards, but just enough to enjoy the ride. With so many gearheads focusing on the Mustangs, Camaros, and Cudas of that era, I’m actually glad Drive picked this slightly modified Dart for its new “Big Muscle” episode.
