PostHeaderIcon Lister Shows a Viable Way to Preserve Vintage Sports Car Brands

The modern automotive market with all its variety and customization possibilities did bring about one undesirable side effect. IT has made almost impossible for small-time manufacturers to continue doing what they do, which is making specialty, low-volume boutique cars for enthusiasts. It does not make sense business-wise, which is why many of the great sports car brands of the previous centruy have all but disappeared. But there might be a way to save those precious brands, as Lister is showing us.

To your father and grandfather, the name Lister Motor Company is synonymous with some of the most serious racing cars and hardcore sports cars. To your kid, however, the company is known as a Jag tuner. That’s right, Lister has metamorphosed into a tuner of Jaguar products following its take over by father and son team Andrew and Lawrence Whitaker in 2013. While upgrading and garnishing Jaguar products is a far cry from what Lister used to do, at least the brand is still alive, and flushed with cash.

It’s actually better than you think, Lister or any other legendary sports car brand being turned into a tuning shop. You see, custom exotics are in vogue these days, which means by becoming tuners these brands stand a good chance of making some serious money. Then, as a sort of extracurricular activity, as it were, they can channel that money into reviving one of the iconic old models or a completely new one designed from scratch. That is what Lister is supposed to be doing. In their day to day job they are customizing F-Types and F-Paces, but in their free times they are working on stuff you see above, a new, modern and extremely sleek Knobbly.

Speaking of Lister’s souped up Jag, they aren’t half bad, either. The latest creation, the LFT-C, is an open-top version of their take on the F-Type coupe (known as the LFT-666 coupe), and it’s a serious performance machine. Boasting a Lister-tuned and supercharged 666 bhp V8 engine, the LFT-C is able to sprint from nought to 60 miles an hour in just over three seconds and reach a top speed of 205 mph. That is what 666 horsepower can do for you, besides giving your car a cool, sinister air of naughtiness. The first thing you should do upon getting one of these is buying a pair of ‘666’ sticker for the side sills. Whereas the coupe version is limited to 99 units, this open-top version comes in only 10 copies, each priced from £139,000.

In addition to the production LFT-666 and LFT-C models, Lister is also offering wheel and body enhancements for all Jaguar F-Type models worldwide, with kits starting from just £9,750 for the Lister badge, bumper and wheel upgrade. Cars with only the Lister body enhancements will be known as simply the Lister LFT, with no BHP denotation added.

Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of The Lister Motor Company said: “Launching the new LFT-C is a personal triumph, as I have always loved convertible cars, even since my 2nd car, an MG Midget. While we are famous for cars like the Knobbly and the Storm, the LFT series heralds a new era for Lister and continues our historical enhancement of Jaguar drive trains, which dates back to 1957. In 2019, we will see the launch of at least two new cars and have also just opened our new £5m headquarters in Lancashire that will be known as the home of the new Lister. There is lots more to come, and we look forward to sharing more news in the near future.”

PostHeaderIcon Karma Hooks Up with Pininfarina In Latest Strategy Move

You know the likes of Tesla and Polestar, the big players of the electric scene? Well, before they become the prominent names they are now there was Fisker and their Karma. It was the first real-world electric car, if you will, with a dose of sportiness and luxury. Sadly though, Fisker’s journey to become the world’s leader in luxury EV production has been plagued with many misfortunes. But the company still survives under the name Karma in a metamorphosed sort of way, and in their latest move they have partnered up with the design giant Pininfarina. Could this be the solution to Karma’s problems?

On paper, it seems, the answer to that question is a yes. When you look at the lineup of executives Karma Automotive now boasts, which includes some Chinese blood, and when you take into account the reinforcement to be brought in by Pinin under the auspices of Mahindra Group, this little company now packs a formidable, international punch. So it comes as no surprise that they have already laid out an ambitious plan for the near future.

That plan includes the launch of Pininfarina-designed concept car, along with a next-generation luxury electric Revero and an all-electric Karma Vision concept. And they have all been proposed to make their debut at Auto Shanghai 2019. In fact they are known internally as the “Shanghai Big Three”. This alone shows Karma is now on the right track to success. Instead of focusing on a small market in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, like Henrik Fisker did when he started this whole shindig, the new global company is putting emphasis on the the Chinese market, hence that Chinese executive we mentioned above.

The new strategy is called  ‘Value-Forward’ business plan and it calls for accelerating future technology and product development through Pininfarina’s turn-key automotive experience. The Italian firm is the right firm for this as they have a long and glorious history of helping car makers step up their game. They have the know-how, and not just in terms of design. Pininfarina is now a fully-fledged engineering with the backing of one of the world’s largest and richest conglomerates. The only niggle here has to do with the fact that with Pinin now busy developing cars for so many clients, they might lose some of the exclusivity, some of the joie de vivre that made them great in the first place. Well, that’s something the likes of Ferrari and Alfa Romeo have to contend with.

“Karma is united in spirit with Pininfarina through our shared commitment to stunning design, and we are excited about the reaction we anticipate the end result of our partnership will generate,” said Karma CEO Dr. Lance Zhou.

PostHeaderIcon Pininfarina PF0 Sketches Revealed Ahead of Pebble Beach Debut

So as we reported last week, Automobili Pininfarina is coming to this year’s Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elagance with something truly special. They are calling this Pininfarina PF0, as the concept is called, the most beautiful electric hypercar the world has ever seen. So we’re pretty excited.

We’re excited because it’s the Italians calling the Pininfarina PF0 ‘most beautiful’. We trust these guys in matters of aesthetics. If it were the Germans making such claim we’d be rolling our eyes so hard, they’d get stuck in the back of our heads. That said, we have to admit we didn’t get totally hot when we first saw the sketches of this PF0. But then again, judging a car by its early sketches is like judging a movie by its opening credits. What sold us on the car was Paolo Pininfarina’s passionate speech about this car and the company’s American Dream:

Michael Perschke, CEO Automobili Pininfarina said: “We are looking forward to presenting the PF0 design model created by Pininfarina SpA to clients and specialist retailers over the coming days. But our time at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and in the Monterey auction houses will also be a highlight. We will celebrate Pininfarina’s unique place in automotive history and undoubtedly pick up further inspiration for our future range of cars from these Italian masterpieces.”

The Italian design giant Pininfarina is coming to this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with something quite special. They used to bring only pointless concepts to this event, but this year’s they are bringing the Pininfarina PF0 which is a hypercar with a production plan.

To be more precise, the Pininfarina PF0 is a luxury electric hypercar, handcrafted in Italy with a kind of design the company says is the most beautiful of its kind. There’s a lot of lofty claims about the P50, so the prospective customer they will be showing the car to at Pebble Beach should have no problem loving it, which means Pininfarina should have no problem selling the 150 copies of it they plan to produce. For now we have only a few renderings of the interior to drool over, but if what they’re saying is right the P50 would be a rival for the likes of Chiron and Regera and Rimac One and Two. And yes, that means it will have an wince-inducing price tag.

Michael Perschke, Automobili Pininfarina CEO, said: “Numerous design icons from Pininfarina’s incredible history have won awards at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, so I am excited to present a future Pininfarina classic to prospective owners in close proximity to this famous event. “Our presence in Monterey is an inspiring chapter in the story of realising Battista Farina’s long-held dream: one day there will be beautiful cars solely branded Pininfarina. These special VIP previews mean that future PF0 owners, most of whom will undoubtedly own numerous modern and historic classics, have an opportunity right now to be part of the birth of the company and their hypercar.

PostHeaderIcon R&B Star Usher Starts Gumball 3000 in a BAC Mono

You have probably heard of Usher, the ENB singer who dances way too much and way too skillfully for a supposedly straight man, the guy who gave Justin Bieber his start in the business. Well, anyway, like all black musicians, Usher is a huge car fan and he’s now showing that off by taking part in the Gumball 3000 exotic car rally with a BAC Mono

Usher showed up at the event wearing what appeared to be a plate carrier vest, which isn’t that bad a fashion choice considering what the new flock of rappers are wearing these days. The man tried his best to look cool getting strapped into the tiny cockpit of the BAC Mono, but you could tell he wasn’t entirely comfortable. But hey, this single-seater got him a lot more attention than any Rolls-Royce or Maybach could, and Rick Ross and Kanye have already ruined those, so, you know, the Mono it was.

Gumball 3000 exotic car rally is an event for people with cool cars and way too much free time. It is basically a 3,000 mile road trip/party which crosses through Europe and Asia to the finish line in Tokyo, Japan.

BAC Co-Founder and Director of Product Development, Neill Briggs, said: “Wow, what a fantastic way to mark the start of Gumball 3000 – which never ceases to amaze year after year. Having one of the greatest musical artists of recent times in Mono was extra special – and hearing just how impressed he was with the car was incredible, too. Usher really knows and loves his cars, and they don’t come any better than Mono for pure driving enjoyment – we look forward to getting him behind the wheel again!”

PostHeaderIcon Lister LFT-666 Announced Based on Jaguar F-Type

Lister Motor Company is one of handful of original British sports car makers still around today, but even they have had to sort of curb their enthusiasm and do some uncool things in order to survive. Their latest creation is the Lister LFT-666, and despite the cool name, it is nothing but a tuned Jaguar F-Type

In fact, Lister sells you a £9,750 kit that give your standard F-Type the look of a Lister LFT. The Lister LFT-666 that they themselves will make is limited to 99 units and it comes a power kit as well which, as the name suggests, dials up the output of the Jag 5.0 liter supercharged V8 to a demonic 666 horsepower. The LFT styling package, meanwhile, consists of carbon fiber panels including front bumper, front splitter, rear diffuser, rear lip spoiler, rear extended wheel arches a new grille design and a set of new lightweight alloy wheels fitted with Michelin tyres.

The thing is though, nobody’s going to look at this thing and think Lister. It’s just a leaner, meaner F-Type. Guess Lister is a tuner now.

Speaking of the exciting developments of the Lister Motor Company, Lawrence Whittaker, CEO says, “Over the past six months the Lister Motor Company has been working hard on developing our Tuning Division, starting with modifying the Jaguar F-Type. Originally, we named the prototype the Lister ‘Thunder’, however, due to future model lineage, all 99-production models will now be known a, the Lister LFT-666, a befitting title and one where an intrigued passer-by instantly knows the break horse power of each Lister model.”

PostHeaderIcon Ultra-Rare, Ultra-Clean Mercedes CLK GTR Headed for Monterey Auction

It is not often that a Mercedes CLK GTR crosses the auction block, and it rarely happens that it should such a prime example. Actually, this 1998 CLK GTR you see here is virtually brand-new with only 1,500 km on the clock, and it is going under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s Monterey action next month.

Belonging to the golden era of GT1 Le Mans cars – it was built as the production version of the race car, as per the rules – the Mercedes CLK GTR is a supercar on par with the McLaren F1 and Porsche 911 GT1. It is an absolute monster, famous for having a tight cabin and almost no creature comfort whatsoever. And yet it is one of the most sought after collectibles on account of its history, its looks, and the fact that they only made 25 copies of it. This one is number 9, and as mentioned it has only walked for 1,500 km and has been under fastidious care and maintenance all its life.

Boasting full documentation and being fully road-legal in all 50 states, this 1998 Mercedes CLK GTR has an estimate of between $4,250,000 and $5,250,000, which we reckon is a conservative estimate. It will almost certainly go for much higher than that. The fact that this car is so clean means it will probably never see any action anywhere, which is kind of sad, because it has a fantastic AMG engine with 600-something horsepower. This car was imported to the States as a show car and chances are it will remain so forever.

Still, if you fancy owning it for a while, you can bid for it at the auction. Well, maybe you can, because according to the auctioneer “this particular lot is available only to specially credentialed bidders who have registered their interest with RM Sotheby’s in advance of the auction.”

PostHeaderIcon Glickenhaus to Bring Back the Original Ferrari California

Well, sort of. Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, the makers of some of the most exquisite Ferrari-based road and racing cars ever, has announced a new project which is a “low volume” retro sports car that looks a helluva lot like the original Ferrari California 250GT Spider. Given that the original is a $15 Million+ car these days, we reckon Glickenhaus SCG 006, with a projected price of around $250K, is going to find a lot of admirers.

We are certainly hooked seeing just one picture of the thing, and we don’t even dig those side exhaust pipes that are sure to burn many ankles. One would think those side pipes were needed because if it were not for them the SCG 006 would have looked too like the original Ferrari California and it would not have sat well with Ferrari. But the side piping notwithstanding, the rest of this two-seater sports car is absolutely gorgeous and utterly irresistible.

As for the technical highlights, where as the original Ferrari California Spider was a V12, the Glickenhaus SCG 006 will get a Chevy LT4 V8 Supercharged unit with 650 horsepower. The car, which also boasts a 6-speed manual gearbox and a carbon fiber body will be road legal in all states except, ironically, in California. But that is a problem Glickenhaus is working to remedy.

Looking at this thing we can’t help thinking this could be the Singer 911 of vintage Ferraris. It could be a whole new niche for Glickenhaus who has the means and the expertise to restomod classic Ferraris and turn them into works of art.

PostHeaderIcon History Made: First-Ever Driverless Run of Goodwood Hill by Robocar

The petrolhead extravaganza that is the Goodwood Festival of Speed witnessed a momentous occasion this year as the first autonomous run of the estate’s famous hillclimb course was completed by Roborace’s Robocar. The aptly named machine navigated the 1.16 mile course using artificial intelligence.

As pointless as it may seem to driving enthusiasts and particularly racing where it is the skill of the driver that matters, the autonomous run by Robocar was a watershed moment. It is not so much the fact that a driverless car completed a course. Other cars have done that, and on more challenging routes. It is the fact that a festival like Goodwood, which celebrates mostly the good old days of automobile, has accepted such a thing in its midst.

The Roborace Robocar, which is of course electric, weighs weighs 1,350 kg and is powered by four 135kW electric motors used to drive each wheel, for a combined 500-plus hp. Weirdly though, it is not the motor that is most impressive part of this machine, but rather NVIDIA DRIVE PX2 processor that enabled it to drive on its own without pre-programming. The car uses a combination of LiDar, radar, GPS, ultrasonic, and camera sensor to find its way and stay on course.

“We are ecstatic that the team have been able to achieve this landmark run and we hope that it draws attention to the amazing advances that are being made in the automotive industry,” said Rod Chong, Deputy CEO of Roborace. “Robocar is an ambassador for the future technologies we will see on our roads and we hope that inspirational stunts like this will change public perceptions of autonomous vehicles.”

PostHeaderIcon Singer 911 DLS Revealed at Goodwood FoS 2018

As promised, Singer Vehicle Design revealed their most amazing creation yet at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Singer 911 DLS (Dynamics and Lightweighting Study) as it’s called, is a concept they have developed for “Pursuit of Excellence through a Lightweight Philosophy.”

Of course, a Singer concept is not like other concept. It will soon be copied as a production model sold for a wince-inducing price. In fact, at the Goodwood Festival they are bringing out two of these Singer 911 DLS models, one for the hill climb run and one for display. The show car will be on display along with six other Singer 911s outside Goodwood House.

As for the specs, while SVD remains tight lipped as to the exact details of the Singer 911 DLS, we know that it has been a joint project with Williams Advanced Engineering and other partners such as Michelin and Recaro. The Recaro connection is particularly interesting, as they have developed a pair of extremely cool looking seats for the DLS which we reckon are the best compromise between style and lightness. The car also boasts carbon fiber dash, consoles, and even steering wheel, and it features a new arrangement at the back with visible exhaust system, we’re guessing made from inconel.

The engine is the familiar Singer-tuned 4.0 liter unit, this time heavily improved by Williams. But as always, what we love best about SInger 911 is the looks. We particularly appreciate the flared wheel arches, the Carrera RS-inspired ducktail spoiler, and the Fuchs-style wheels. We have to admit, though, we’re not big fans of the two giant tailpipes.

PostHeaderIcon Rezvani TANK Military Edition Is Fit for Invading Baghdad!

Remember Rezvani Tank, the crazy SUV by the boutique car maker from California? Well, they have now launched a $300K armored edition called the Rezvani TANK Military, and it is outfitted better than the Humvees with which the U.S. Military conquered Iraq. IS this even legal?

I mean, apart from the armored body and bullet-proof windows, Rezvani TANK Military comes features such as smoke screen, thermal night vision, ram bumpers, bomb protection, strobe lights, electrified door handles, gas masks, blinding lights, PA system and siren, and these are just the standard features. They can make it even more apocalypse-ready if you want. Whatever happens in California that would warrant the creation of such a car? We could understand if this thing came out of Bogota, or Damascus. But downtown L.A.?

As for the more car-like features, the 4,300 lbs Rezvani TANK Military comes with a luxury interior with up to 10 seats, a 6.4-liter 500-horsepower V8 engine or an optional 6.2L 707 Horsepower V8 from the Dodge Hellcat. The vehicle benefits from military-grade run-flat tires and reinforced suspension with plenty of ground clearance, meaning it is pretty much unstoppable wherever it wants to go. Prices start from $295,000 USD for the basic version, and go up from there depending on the options you fit to it.

So if you have the mental age of an eight year old and fancy this machine, make sure you first ask your local authorities if it is legal where you live to have a car with lights that blind people and smoke screen and thermal camera. The only thing the TANK lacks is a .50 Cal on the roof.

PostHeaderIcon DSD Design Golem SUV Previewed in Concept Form

The name DSD Design & Motorsport probably does not ring a bell for you. They are a Spanish firm with a new and fresh take on how supercars should look and operate. After receiving much praise for their first product, the Boreas hybrid hypercar, they are now working on a super SUV, called the Golem.

The Golem is pitched as a SUV, though it kind of looks like a pickup truck, with a very high ground clearance, muscular body, huge wheels, and aggressive lines everywhere. But you kind of expect that when the name of the thing is Golem. The vehicle is in prototype stage, or design concept to be more precise, with the first 1:1 model getting its first outing at the University of Valencia during a design competition.

The Golem SUV is clearly designed to impress and intimidate. Every surface features an exaggerated, maybe even caricatured, twist – whether it’s the sculpted bumper we’re looking at, or the awesome fenders which would have looked more at home on a tank, or the pentagon-shaped doors. There is a nice symmetry to the design of the Golem, and yet it doesn’t look boxy like most other macho SUVs.

As for the specs and technical details, there is none. As mentioned, the Golem SUV is in early prototype stages and it will be a while before we see it anywhere near a road. But having seen DSD’s previous project, you can rest assured that the SUV will boast a similarly powerful engine and unrivaled off-road capabilities.

PostHeaderIcon Serious Eye Candy: Singer Porsche 911 Oregon

Granted, all of Singer’s 911s, every single one of them, are proper eye candy. But we call this one, the Singer Porsche 911 Oregon Commission ‘serious’ because it is one of the more-business-like models they’ve done. It is designed for a serious, no-nonsense gentleman.

Let us elaborate that point a little bit. Over the years Singer has done a great many of their super exclusive 911s. Because these cars are bespoke to the individuals who order them, Singer has to paint them in whatever color those people desire. So we have a baby blue Singer 911, and one that is painted a ghastly shade of brown best described as baby poop. But Singer Porsche 911 Oregon features a very dignified dark green paint job inspired by classic 911 colors.

What’s more, this bad boy does not have the wide fenders or big rear spoiler we’ve seen on a number of other Singer 911s. Not that those features are bad. Not at all. They are appealing in their own unique way. Singer Porsche 911 Oregon is designed to look cool and classy, and it achieves that through simplicity of style. It features all the delightful little details we like in s Singer, but they are subtle and understated.

The same can be said of the interior of this car, even though the color scheme is lush and luxurious. The beige theme works really well with the darker accents of the cabin and makes the signature Singer highlights really pop. The awesome design of the seats, the unique steering wheel and instrument cluster, and the superb dashboard which is a modern interpretation of the vintage 911 dash. Enjoy…

Enjoy…

PostHeaderIcon Brabham BT62 Tackles ‘The Bend’ in Styles

The new hyper track car Brabham BT62 is now officially a Bender as it completes a successful performance test at Australia’s The Bend Motorsport Park. The BT62 is next headed to Europe to continue its evaluation ahead of release.

The Bend testing session was designed to gauge the dynamism of Brabham BT62 in trials headed by Le Mans winner and Brabham Automotive’s Managing Director, David Brabham and other professional drivers. With 710 horsepower on tap and only 972kg to move, the BT62 is a pretty sprightly thing around the race track. But it’s all down to power and power-to-weight ratio. The car also has excellent aero properties with over 1200kg of downforce. Needless to say that makes the driving of this car very rewarding as the limits are pretty high up.

Brabham BT62 is now being shipped to the Algarve International Circuit at Portimao, Portugal, later this month for the next series of dynamic testing. The purpose of all these tests if to make sure the cars they deliver to customers can cash the checks its hype machine has written.

Speaking at The Bend and reflecting on the BT62’s performance and character, David Brabham said, “The BT62 is incredibly responsive and rewarding to drive, and as a result, it’s very easy to feel at one with the car. The steering is very direct and does exactly what you want it to do. There’s a very wide window of grip and the confidence that the car gives you as a driver, even in the wet, is outstanding.”

PostHeaderIcon ARES X-Raid Is a Coachbuilt Mercedes G63 AMG

Sometimes the tuners get carried away when they are trying to design a new body kit for a popular car and end up redesigning the whole thing. More often than not that redesign is a total disaster. But on a few rare occasions what results is way nicer than the base car, as is in the case of ARES X-Raid which is a heavily customized Mercedes G63 AMG.

We had seen this beast in computer renderings before, but it’s the first time we get to check it out in the flesh, or metal to be more precise, courtesy of the folks at Alain Class Motors who have secured a pristine 2014 example of the extraordinary ARES X-Raid. The extent of modifications applied to this car is such that you would have to stare at it a while before you even realize it is a G63 AMG under the skin. There is new fascia on the front and rear, new side panels, skirts, fenders, tailgate, pretty much everything has been changed and made more dramatic.

ARES X-Raid G63 features the 5.5 liter bi-turbo AMG V8 which the tuner has upgraded to 760 horsepower. The carbon fiber body reduces the overall weight by as much as 200 kg compared to the standard G63, so the X-Raid is pretty quick. The luxury SUV also features jacked up suspension and bespoke 22 inch wheels. As for the interior, it is also bespoke and features a redesigned dashboard and a new rear passenger compartment with two individual seats and a large center console. This particular example has a Cream interior garnished with light-colored wooden trims which look very warm and cozy.

PostHeaderIcon Ferrari SP38 Looks Even Cooler in Spider Form

This year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este had a new showstopper in form of the one-off Ferrari SP38. This special commission 488-based supercar is the nicest blend of retro and modern design cues, incorporating highlights from some of the most iconic Ferraris of the past into a sleek and modern shape.

Turns out, however, they could have made it cooler still. The rendering you see here, penned by the talented independent designer X-Tomi Design, depicts a Ferrari SP38 Spider which we think looks sensational. Granted, with the roof gone the SP38 loses its F40-inspired engine cover with those three macho openings. But somehow being topless works better with that beautiful face!

The Concourse d’Elegance on the shore of Lake Como is by far and away the most prestigious motoring event of the year, even more so than the one at Pebble Beach because, well, this one’s in Italy. Though the main focus here is on the pristine vintage cars that parade in front of a discerning audience to win prizes for excellentness, the show also attracts concepts and prototypes, old and new. The video below showcases some of the best cars at the 2018 show, including, of course, the Ferrari SP38:

Villa d’Este has become such an important motoring event, many car makers pick this venue to reveal or showcase their important concepts and upcoming models. This year BMW had the game on lock, revealing the 9Cento concept bike and the M8 Gran Coupe.
