PostHeaderIcon $7.2 Billion – That’s the Check FCA Gets to Cash for Offloading Magneti Marelli

This was in the to-do list for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ever since the company’s new CEO, Mike Manley, filled the shoes of the late Sergio Marchionne. Now, the company has sold its component unit, Magneti Marelli, to Calsonic Kansei Corporation for €6.2 billion, which is approximately $7.2 Billion at current exchange rates.

PostHeaderIcon Sergio Marchionne’s Greatest Hits

The sudden and unexpected death of Sergio Marchionne shook the auto industry to its core. In a business that prominently features larger-than-life personalities, Marchionne was a giant among men, a visionary whose bold creativity and unrelenting determination helped turn the fortunes of Chrysler from the brink of bankruptcy into one of the world’s most respected auto brands. It’s a devastating loss, but it also gives us a moment to reflect on the career of a man who was never afraid to buck trends and take chances. There’s no shortage of greatest hits in the Sergio Marchionne collection, and it is with utmost respect that we take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in the life of a truly memorable man.

PostHeaderIcon Sergio Marchionne, Savior of Chrysler, Has Passed Away at 66

Sergio Marchionne, the man who saved Chrysler from going belly up during the 2009 recession, has passed away at the age of 66. He was recently admitted to the hospital for routine should surgery but took a turn for the worst shortly thereafter. Reports came in early in the week that he had been placed on life support without expectation of recovering. He passed away shortly thereafter, leaving behind two sons and a legacy of hard work and dedication that can never be forgotten.

“Unfortunately, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man, and friend is gone,” John Elkann, chairman of FCA, said in a statement.

Those are grim words, no doubt. Earlier in the week, FCA, Ferrari, and CNH Industrial took steps to replace him and announce that he would be unable to work. Now that he’s gone, it’s important to remember him for what he was – a dedicated worker. Reports show that he worked nearly non-stop. He took over Chrysler with no cash down during the Great Recession of 2009 and managed to turn it around, saving 300,000 jobs in the process. He even initiated the first-ever no-strike pledge with the UAW and brought FCA brands up to par with benefits and pay familiar to only familiar to those working at Toyota and Honda. He made seemingly constant trips between Italy and Detroit.

Ken Lewenza, President of Canadian Auto Workers, met with Marchionne in 2009
and had something very interesting to say:

“He looked like he just got off a 20-hour shift, and he probably had,”

He never seemed to stop, and he requested the same from his executives, and it drove some of them away, but those who stayed grew into positions they didn’t think were possible. And, that’s exactly what it took to keep a brand like FCA afloat in one of the darkest times in U.S. automotive history. With Marchionne laid to eternal rest, it’s up to Mike Manley, the former head of the Jeep Division to keep the company alive and moving at warp speed. Manley took over just this week once it was discovered that Marchionne had taken a turn for the worst. As CEO of Ferrari, he was replaced by John Elkann, former Fiat Chrysler chairman.

At this point, there’s nothing else to say and nothing to speculate. A good, hard-working man has passed away, and our hearts go out to his family and all those that worked so closely with him. May he rest in peace.

PostHeaderIcon Sergio Marchionne Out as FCA and Ferrari CEO After Complications With Surgery

In a dramatic and unexpected turn of events, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ expected change in leadership has been accelerated after CEO Sergio Marchionne experienced complications after surgery. The FCA board held an emergency meeting to address the issue. Ultimately, the board decided to start the CEO transition process way ahead of schedule — Marchionne was supposed to step down in 2019 — by naming Jeep boss Mike Manley as the acting CEO.

PostHeaderIcon Report: FCA to Kill Off Diesels Over the Next 5 Years

In a recent report from Financial Times who spoke with informants close to the situation, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is allegedly looking to phase out diesel engines by 2022. This comes as a response to decreasing consumer demand for diesels following the continuous scrutiny of diesel emissions and the numerous scandals surrounding Volkswagen and other automakers. Even FCA has had run-ins with government organizations over the issue.

FCA’s official plan will reportedly be announced June 1, 2018, in FCA’s next five-year master plan. Globally, FCA uses diesel engines in most of its Fiat and Alfa Romeo models. However, diesel sales in Europe fell eight percent in 2017, moving diesel’s market share to 43.8 percent, according to a study by Jato Dynamics. Despite this slump, FCA’s diesel sales actually grew slightly.

While this spells bad news for diesel fans in Europe, fans in North America will likely dodge the bullet. FCA’s only diesel offered stateside is the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, and the 6.7-liter inline-six turbodiesel is sources from Cummins. The EcoDiesel is found in the Ram 1500, ProMaster van, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and is soon expected in the Jeep Wrangler JL. The 6.7-liter Cummins is only used in Ram’s Heavy Duty lineup.

The EcoDiesel recently rearmed the EPA’s approval after a stop-sale order for nearly a year. The EPA reports it found an emissions cheating device similar to those found in Volkswagen TDI engines. FCA is still facing a $4.6 billion fine for the issue and is currently recalling more than 104,000 vehicles for a reprogram of their engine control modules.

The mighty Cummins turbodiesel is exempt from most of the EPA’s emissions regulations since it’s only available in vehicles above a specified weight limit.

So, as FCA begins slowly phasing out diesels in Europe and other markets around the globe, customers in Canada and the U.S. can expect to keep their turbodiesel options. Nevertheless, we’ll have to see what FCA’s upcoming master plan has in store come June 1. Stay tuned to TopSpeed.com for developing information.

PostHeaderIcon FCA’s New “Reloaded by Creators” Service is Your Chance To Own a Classic Fiat or Alfa Romeo

Jaguar’s decision to complete the D-Type’s original production run isn’t the only significant thing to come out of the Retromobile show in Paris. Turns out, Fiat Chrysler Automobile also announced a similar initiative called “Reloaded by Creators.” The new sales service was created in part because FCA is now opening its books to sell a limited number of carefully selected classic cars, purchased by the service, and restored to their original condition. The proceeds generated by the sale of these classics will go to new “scouting activities” that will strengthen FCA’s own historic collection.

“FCA says that the Reloaded by Creators service will also set the stage for avid fans and collectors of classic Alfa Romeos, Fiats, Lancias, and Abarths to have opportunities at owning a collectible vehicle from any of these brands”

FCA says that the Reloaded by Creators service will also set the stage for avid fans and collectors of classic Alfa Romeos, Fiats, Lancias, and Abarths to have opportunities at owning a collectible vehicle from any of these brands. Off the bat, there are five models that are being offered, including a 1991 Alfa Spider Spider, a 1973 Lancia Fulvia Coupe Montecarlo, a 1981 Pininfarina Spiderueropa, a 1989 Alfa Romeo SZ, and a 1959 Lancia Appia Coupe.

Of these give models, FCA describes the first three — the Alfa Spider, Lancia Fulvia, and Pininfarina Spiderueropa — as “ultimate classics,” a term the automaker uses for the “last versions of their series to be built.” They’re also the most “complete in terms of engineering and design.” Meanwhile, the other two models for sale — the Alfa Romeo SZ and the Lancia Appia Coupe — are described as “unusual custom cars that not everyone will know about.” Take those words for what they’re worth.

Neither FCA nor its new Reloaded by Creators program have indicated the sale price of any of these classics. It did say that all five cars come complete with certificates of authenticity.

In case you’re interested in any of the five FCA classics, a brief description of each model can be found below.

1991 Alfa Romeo Spider

FCA's New "Reloaded by Creators" Service is Your Chance To Own a Classic Fiat or Alfa Romeo - image 766912

Arguably the most famous Alfa Romeo convertible in history, the Spider is, without question, a crown jewel of any Alfa Romeo collector. This particular model belongs to the last version of the Spider to be built, which also happens to be the last series that Battista Pininfarina worked on in person. The model FCA is selling has been in its possession for almost 30 years, and was used for “technical tests” over the years.

1989 Alfa Romeo SZ

FCA's New "Reloaded by Creators" Service is Your Chance To Own a Classic Fiat or Alfa Romeo - image 766914

If the 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider isn’t your thing, you can opt to get the 1989 Alfa Romeo SZ. This model exclusively wore the Alfa Red color and was limited to just 1,000 units. The model in question also wears the date “15 September 1989,” which presumably was the date it was built. It also traces its roots to the Balocco race circuit where it was used for “testing and experiments.”

1973 Lancia Fulvia Coupe Montecarlo

FCA's New "Reloaded by Creators" Service is Your Chance To Own a Classic Fiat or Alfa Romeo - image 766904

The Lancia Fulvia Coupe Montecarlo traces its roots to the Fulvia Coupe, which was launched in 1965 on a shortened version of the Fulvia sedan chassis. The Montecarlo special edition was created to celebrate Lancia’s victory in the 1972 Montecarlo Rally behind the effort of drivers Sandro Munari and Mario Manucci. This specific model doesn’t have the most powerful of engines — it only has a 90-horsepower 1.3-liter unit — but it still has its original black registration plates. That has to count for something.

1959 Lancia Appia Coupe

FCA's New "Reloaded by Creators" Service is Your Chance To Own a Classic Fiat or Alfa Romeo - image 766900

The 2+2 coupé was designed by Pininfarina. It also holds the distinction of being one of the few models that were built on a chassis that Lancia used for its custom-built vehicles. While it’s not the same model, the Appia Coupe also has a special place in the annals of Italian cinema as the model driven by Sylva Koscina in Luigi Zampa’s film “The Traffic Policeman.” I’ve never heard of that movie, but I’m sure it was good enough to have the Appia Coupe in it.

1981 Spidereuropa Pininfarina

FCA's New "Reloaded by Creators" Service is Your Chance To Own a Classic Fiat or Alfa Romeo - image 766909

We all know the current Fiat 124 Spider, but back when it was still in its first incarnation, it gave birth to the Pininfarina Spidereuropa. This particular is one of the first models of the Spidereuropa to be built by Pininfarina as a last ode to the OG 124 Sport Spider. It only has 10,000 kilometers in its odometer, a relatively small mileage considering its age and history.

PostHeaderIcon FCA Facing Big Fines Over Diesel Emissions Cheating

A new stage has been reached with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ legal troubles over alleged cheating diesels. The U.S. Department of Justice has offered to settle its lawsuit against the automaker if FCA recalls 104,000 Jeep and Ram vehicles equipped with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 for a software upgrade and to pay a “very substantial” fine that, according to the DOJ, “adequately reflects the seriousness of the conduct that led to the violations.”

While the fine amount has not been disclosed, it will likely be far less than Volkswagen’s massive $30 billion fine over its emission test-dodging diesels fitted in 580,000 vehicles in the U.S. Globally, Volkswagen’s turbodiesel issue affected some 11 million vehicles. Estimates made last year by Barclays Plc, Mediobanca SpA and Evercore ISI say FCA could be liable for between $460 million and more than $1 billion.

Unlike Volkswagen, FCA has denied any wrongdoing or conscious effort to cheat on emissions testing with its EcoDiesel V-6. The EPA is also not requesting FCA conduct a buy-back of the vehicles. The diesels in question were sold in 2014 to 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500 pickups. The EPA denied FCA permission to sell 2017 model year vehicles with the EcoDiesel.

The EcoDiesel’s still has a future, though. FCA says its updated EcoDiesel will make more power and be available in future vehicles. The new engine is said to have increased horsepower from 240 to 260 and torque from 420 to 442 pound-feet. The engine will return to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, debut in the new Jeep Wrangler JL, and be available in the new 2019 Ram 1500.

PostHeaderIcon FCA Has Filed a Patent for a Three-Screen Dashboard

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ interior designers are apparently obsessed with screens. A patent filing was just made public of an innovative dashboard design with three individual screens – one for the gauge cluster, the middle for the infotainment, and the right presumably for co-driving information. This comes after FCA’s recent debut of the 2019 Ram 1500 and its 12-inch, portrait-oriented infotainment screen in higher-end trims. Unfortunately, the three-screen filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had very little description or information about the dash or its intended use.

FCA Has Filed a Patent for a Three-Screen Dashboard
- image 765065
“The passenger-side screen almost appears to depict off-road terrain, speed, and ancillary gauges for vehicle information”

Speculation on what vehicle(s) will utilize the dash is fueled by the rough images seen on the screens. The passenger-side screen almost appears to depict off-road terrain, speed, and ancillary gauges for vehicle information. The information is similar to what Baja and Rally teams use during races as the co-driver calls out obstacles ahead and monitors vehicle systems. As such, perhaps the new Wagoneer and/or Grand Wagoneer might have a three-dash layout.

Holistically, the dash design seems fitted to a cab-forward vehicle like a minivan, thanks to the steeply angled knee pads and its short top. Perhaps this will be used in the Chrysler Pacifica’s mid-cycle refresh. Conversely, the patent filing’s brief description does say the broken (dotted) lines represent portions of the drawings that are not included in the three-screen patent. That means everything surrounding the screens might be merely a placeholder.

Note: Ram 1500’s 12-inch, portrait-oriented infotainment screen

Regardless of the facts, it is clear automakers are getting serious about including touchable technology in vehicles. The proliferation of the Internet of Things and society’s growing dependence on instant and constant connectedness is pushing the boundaries of where high-end technology can be located.

PostHeaderIcon FCA Almost Debt Free; Aims to Overtake Ford in Earnings!

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is having a record year. Lead by CEO Sergio Marchionne, the automaker is set to pay off all its debts and bank a projected $4.9 billion in cash by the end of 2018. The solid financial footing will put FCA in a stronger place to compete against General Motors and Ford, perhaps even surpassing them in earnings.

Marchionne told analysts in a recent earnings teleconference that, “There’s a very strong likelihood that we will outperform Ford in terms of operating earnings in 2018. That’s something that if I told any of us in the room here that would’ve been doable five years ago, nobody would have believed it.”

FCA’s very positive standing is surprising considering Marchionne was practically begging General Motors for a merger, with CEO Mary Berra reportedly declining multiple offers. Now, Marchionne has completely dropped the idea, saying, “The necessity to find a partner, to try and guarantee our survival, going forward, is put to bed. I mean we’re done.”

The automaker’s success is pinned on its truck and SUV sales lead by the Ram 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Jeep Wrangler. Sales forecasts only show growth, too, thanks to an all-new Wrangler for 2018, an all-new Ram 1500 for 2019, a refreshed Jeep Cherokee for 2019, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s new halo model, the Hellcat-powered 2018 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Add to that Jeep’s upcoming Scrambler pickup, three-row Jeep Wagoneer, and the luxury-minded Grand Wagoneer.

Sunny Outlooks for FCA

2018 Jeep Wrangler - image 748543
“Another factor in FCA’s recent financial fortune is growing profit margins, which rose from 7.1 to 8.0 percent over the last year”

Another factor in FCA’s recent financial fortune is growing profit margins, which rose from 7.1 to 8.0 percent over the last year. Comparatively, Ford’s profit margins have fallen from 8.5 to 6.8 percent in the same time. That further substantiates Marchionne’s claim of surpassing Ford in earnings.

“The 2018 forecast is an indication of what this machine can produce,” Marchionne said in the teleconference. “We’re going to run our business, and we are going to run hard.”

Adding fuel to the fire, President Trump’s recent U.S. Tax Code revamp is forecasted to help FCA by $1 billion in 2018.

Marchionne is expected to deliver FCA’s next four-year strategic plan in June of 2018, taking the company out to 2022. It’s very possible new vehicles will be announced then, too, so we’ll certainly be paying attention to that. We fully expect FCA to continue and further its reliance on crossovers, SUVs, and pickups as fuel prices stay low. Simultaneously, the automaker is working on fuel-saving systems like the mild hybrid systems found in the 2018 Jeep Wrangler and 2019 Ram 1500.

PostHeaderIcon GAC Could Make its U.S. Launch Via FCA Dealerships

For those who were surprised to see GAC Motors at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, don’t be. The Chinese automaker has made plans to enter the U.S. market known. Now it looks like it may have found a door to enter, one that’s being opened by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. A report from The New York Times revealed that the automakers are in discussions on a partnership that will allow FCA dealerships to sell GAC models in the US as early as 2019.

GAC Could Make its U.S. Launch Via FCA Dealerships - image 763033
“Part of that goal is already underway as GAC is lining up a development center in Michigan and a design center in Los Angeles”

GAC president Yu Juan made no bones about his desire to bring GAC to the U.S. In his mind, America is the barometer that will determine whether GAC can become the global auto brand it aspires to become. “We intend to gain a foothold in the U.S.,” he said in a news conference. “If we can make it in the U.S., we can make it anywhere and enhance further possibilities of future growth.”

Part of that goal is already underway as GAC is lining up a development center in Michigan and a design center in Los Angeles. The two offices could open as early as the first half of this year, joining the tech lab the company opened in Silicon Valley last year. But more than just opening centers in these American cities, GAC’s ultimate goal is to establish a partnership with a North American sales company that can help develop its dealership network. That’s where FCA comes into the picture.

The two automakers already a enjoy a close business relationship — GAC manufacturers Jeep models for the Chinese market — so a new layer to that relationship isn’t out of the cards. Even FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne expressed a willingness to help GAC gain a foothold in the U.S. market. “We are talking to them about how and if we can help if they come to the U.S.,” Marchionne said in his own news conference in Detroit.

GAC Could Make its U.S. Launch Via FCA Dealerships - image 763042
“Should FCA and GAC come to an understanding, expect both parties to benefit from the deal”

It’s worth noting, too, that part of that willingness on FCA’s part stems from a need to bolster its own dealership network, which has been plagued by a lack of model diversity. Dodge and Chrysler, for example, no longer offer small or mid-sized cars. Go to Chrysler’s website, and you’ll see that the once proud automaker only has two models in its portfolio, the 300 full-sized sedan and the Pacifica minivan. That’s it. Dodge isn’t doing better, either. Outside of niche performance cars like the Charger and the Challenger, Dodge only has the Durango, Journey, and Grand Caravan in its offering. The lack of diversity has already taken its toll on FCA dealerships, a lot of whom have become desperate for some variety in their offerings. Having GAC models in these dealerships should help quell those concerns. Sure, the Chinese automaker’s first offering is another SUV, the GS8, but the company is already planning to develop two additional models, one of which could be a small or mid-sized vehicle.

Should FCA and GAC come to an understanding, expect both parties to benefit from the deal. The partnership could even stretch into co-developing future technologies — electrification and autonomous driving — that has jumped into the forefront among automakers all over the world. A potential partnership between FCA and GAC could be beneficial for both companies.

GAC Could Make its U.S. Launch Via FCA Dealerships - image 763046

Just don’t expect the latter to use the name of its flagship brand, Trumpchi, in the U.S. While there’s nothing implicitly wrong about it, the close resemblance to Donald Trump, the current commander-in-chief, may have unintended consequences in the promotion of the brand.

PostHeaderIcon FCA and Hyundai Probably Won’t Merge, but May Grow Closer Via a New Partnership

In a recent interview with Reuters, FCA Boss, Sergio Marchionne, said that FCA and Hyundai have been in talks over a new partnership, but a merger isn’t being considered at this time. At this time, there’s no word as to what FCA can offer Hyundai, but FCA is interested in the Korean automaker’s research in hydrogen fuel and transmission development. This is likely part of FCA’s plan to separate component brands like Magneti Marelli and Comau, though this hasn’t been confirmed and an official business plan isn’t expected until sometime in mid-2018 with this separation taking place by the end of 2018. If the plan does come to fruition and these companies are separated it could help push FCA back into the green for the first time, as a whole, in a long time. Want to know more? Keep reading…

FCA and Hyundai Partnership Agreement

“FCA certainly could benefit from Hyundai’s hydrogen and transmission R&D but can Hyundai benefit from anything FCA can offer from its core group of companies now or after separation?”

Needless to say, we’ll surely hear more about these talks between FCA and Hyundai in the future, but for now, anything or nothing could come out of the deal. With FCA struggling so bad, it needs to become profitable quickly and Marchionne’s business plan of separation could lead the way. A new partnership with Hyundai could certainly ease the pain and the journey to recovery as well. After all, Magneti Marelli manufactures various electronics, engines, suspension, and lighting, among others. And, Comau, is involved in robotics manufacturing and the development of artificial intelligence. FCA certainly could benefit from Hyundai’s hydrogen and transmission R&D but can Hyundai benefit from anything FCA can offer from its core group of companies now or after separation? It’s really hard to tell at this point, but it will be interesting to see what Hyundai has to say about this. After all, the brand has been wildly successful since it came to the United States, so FCA could certainly learn a thing or two from the automaker, that’s for sure.

What do you think? Can both companies benefit from such a partnership or should Hyundai run away from the deal screaming? Outside of the Jeep and Ram brands, Chrysler almost comes off as a charity case so expect to hear about some stout negotiation in the future. Until then, leave your comments down below.

PostHeaderIcon The 6.2-Liter Hellcat V-8 Is Finally Available As A Crate Engine

Chrysler’s famed parts division, Mopar, is officially offering the mighty 6.2-liter Hellcat Hemi V-8 as a crate engine anyone can order. The package is called the “Hellcrate” and includes a brand-new engine with a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty. The optional Crate Hemi Engine Kit adds all the parts needed for a plug-and-play style engine swap into nearly any vehicle. The announcement comes as the 2017 SEMA Show kicks off in Las Vegas with thousands descending Sin City for all things in aftermarket automotive upgrades. This marks the first time the Hellcat V-8 has been available directly from Mopar. Before this, gearheads were left scouring junkyards for wrecked Hellcat Chargers and Challengers hoping to find a working engine.

“Never before has a supercharged, factory-direct 707-horsepower crate engine kit been offered, and we are proud to be the first to deliver a solution enthusiasts have demanded,” said Pietro Gorlier, Head of Mopar for FCA. “This ultimate powertrain option fits the needs of owners and fans who demand iconic performance.”

The Hellcrate, combined with the optional engine kit, includes the powertrain control module, power distribution center, wiring harnesses, accelerator pedal, fuel pump control module, and all the necessary sensors scattered between the air intake and exhaust manifolds. In other words, the package makes it relatively simple to install the 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8 into any project car, providing you know what you’re doing. Additionally, there is a front-end accessory drive kit that adds the alternator, power steering pump, pulleys, and belts.

Naturally, the Hellcrate isn’t cheap. Mopar charges $19,530 for the base Hellcrate package and $2,195 for the Crate Hemi Engine Kit. The Hellcat engine joins the 6.4-liter Hemi and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8s, which retail for $9,430 and $6,135, respectively.

PostHeaderIcon Apparently, Nobody Wants to Partner Up with or Buy FCA

Just a few days ago, it was reported Fiat Chrysler Automobiles had an offer on the table and could ultimately be sold to an unknown Chinese company. Since then, it has been said that Geely was out of the running, as was Dongfeng, and now you can add Guangzhou onto the list of companies that said “no thanks.” Word was that a well-known Chinese automaker had put up an offer, and after being reported to the masses via TV and Internet, FCA’s stock even climbed a bit. That being the case, it tells us that investors have more faith in Chinese automakers than FCA itself, but despite this, the most recent offer was rejected because it just wasn’t enough. Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other companies that could bring some much-needed love to FCA, including brands like SAIC, Chery, and even BYD. But, rumor has it that the most recent offer was just over FCA’s market value, which is right around $20 billion. It almost sounds like Sergio Marchionne seems to think FCA is more valuable than it really is.

Let’s look at past events. An FCA purchase, or at the very least, a partnership, has been on the table for years. General Motors was a potential suitor, but that all fell apart, and Volkswagen ran away screaming. (No surprise there after the financial problems it ran into with the Dieselgate scandal.) And now, we’ve got three well-known Chinese manufacturers that would rather go it alone than obtain even a portion of FCA. That brings the total of companies to give FCA the middle finger up to five, including one American manufacturer and one German manufacturer. Of course, since the most recent deal was rejected, the potential buyer could come back with more money and see what old Sergio says, but at this point, I’m not sure. It just doesn’t look like anyone is dumb enough to buy into FCA. Yeah, that’s pretty harsh to say, but I have my own reasoning. Keep reading to find out more about it.

PostHeaderIcon FCA Could Be Bought by a Chinese Automaker

Formed in 2014, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) alliance has been doing very good these past three years, which is why Sergio Marchionne is on the lookout to either sell the company or make another merger with a big brand. FCA was refused by General Motors back in 2015 and Marchionne’s attempts to find a new collaboration have been unsuccessful so far. However, it seems that FCA is actually on the brink of finding a new owner. According to new reports, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has received at least one offer in August from a “well-known Chinese automaker.”

That’s the word from Automotive News, which claims that the over was slightly higher than FCA’s current market value, but the Italian-American alliance rejected it for not being enough. There’s no detailed information as to what Chinese automaker made the offer, but speculation has it that FCA is negotiating with more than one company. Also, a source close to FCA said that company executives have traveled to China to meet with Great Wall Motor Co., while different sources claim talks with Dongfeng Motor Corp., Zhejiang Geely, and Guangzhou Automobile Group.

PostHeaderIcon Predicting FCA’s Plans For its Recent “Angel” Trademark

Proving yet again that the auto world can be a place rich in irony, Fiat Chrysler Automobile has filed a trademark for the name “Angel,” which the automaker plans to use on a “passenger vehicle” of some sort. Color me amused because, at the very least, FCA is turning its troll game up to a new level; the “Angel” name runs diametrically opposed to the identity of the automaker’s latest muscle car masterpiece, the Dodge Challenger Demon. So what gives here? What’s FCA up to exactly?

Unfortunately, your guess is as good as ours at this point because FCA didn’t exactly divulge details on what it has planned for the “Angel” name. All we know at this point, thanks to our friends over at Fiat Chrysler Authority, is that the name could be used on “trims and badges” of any future model. The fact that the trademark was only filed on July 17 means that this is a new deal for FCA. It’s got plans for the name at some point in the future. How it plans to use it, or if it does at all, is the question that all of us need some answers to sooner or later. You’ve got our attention, FCA. That much I’m sure of. Now, how about giving us some hints because, at this point, all we have are predictions on what you have planned for the “Angel” name.

PostHeaderIcon Samsung's Note 7 Issues Put A Damper On FCA's Mission To Sell Magneti Marelli

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) just can’t seem to catch a break lately. Rumor has it that negotiations between FCA and Samsung Electronics over the sale of Magneti Marelli have halted as Samsung scrambles to fix issues with its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, once again obstructing FCA’s plans to reduce its debt and raise some much needed capital.

That’s the latest from Automotive News, which cites unnamed sources familiar with the deal.

Magneti Marelli is an Italian auto parts producer that was founded in 1919 and has been part of Fiat since 1967. Samsung was reportedly on its way to buying some or even all of the company, with some estimates placing the deal at around $3 billion.

However, according to Automotive News, Samsung and FCA have yet to agree on a valuation or even a deal structure for the sale of Magneti Marelli. With Samsung now under fire with a massive recall of one its most important products, it’s looking less likely that a deal between FCA and the tech producer will be found before the end of the year.

PostHeaderIcon Hackers Have Stolen More Than 30 Jeeps and Have Finally Been Arrested

A while back news surface of high-tech thieves that managed to steal a Jeep in a matter of minutes. So far, the tally of Jeeps stolen by hackers in the Houston area has risen to more than 30, but Local police have finally caught up with these two hackers and have arrested them. As reported by local media outlet ABC 13, the local police had been aware of the robberies, but until a home surveillance video caught the thieves in the act, they had very little to go by.

The two that have been arrested go by the names Michael Arcee and Jesse Zelaya, but local police say there is a possibility that they aren’t the only ones taking advantage of the vulnerability. According to the report, the hackers were using pirated software to infiltrate the vehicle’s built-in security system and bypass it. This enabled them to start the vehicle and roll away in as little as six minutes. It’s not exactly like Gone in 60 Seconds, but six minutes isn’t very long either. According to HPD, the jeeps were being stolen and smuggled into Mexico.

It is important to note that outside of the Pirated software, the hackers also had to gain entry into the vehicle without setting off the alarm. Most stock alarm systems are set to only go off if the door is opened from the interior after it has been locked, so to prevent that the thieves either climbed through a broken window or the vehicles were unlocked – the latter of which is the most likely scenario. Once they were in, it is safe to assume the laptop was plugged into the OBDII diagnostics port with a simple USB adapter available at multiple online outlets. The software that was used is still unknown at this time, but it’s safe to assume that it was likely FCA internal software that was stolen at one point or another.

PostHeaderIcon Internal Review Of FCA Finds Evidence In Sales Padding Allegations

Following Volkswagen’s debilitating and outright embarrassing diesel emissions scandal, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles may now find itself with its own scandal after a 2015 internal review ordered by FCA executives on allegations of sales padding unearthed documents saying some dealerships had reported thousands of vehicle sales in the U.S. with no actual buyers.

Citing multiple sources, Automotive News is reporting that 5,000 to 6,000 vehicles had been reported as sold by dealerships and subsequently unwound, a term used to let customers out of a deal. The sources added that the sales numbers were intentionally inflated, reflecting earlier allegations made by two dealers in a civil lawsuit filed against FCA back in January 2016. Apparently, the alleged sales padding was done to help FCA continue its current run of 75 consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases.

FCA’s U.S. sales head, Reid Bigland, reportedly put a stop to the practice following the review, but those calls only lasted temporarily as the practice continued in the wake of “competitive pressures” brought about by the increase of FCA’s field staff.

Multiple government agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Department of Justice are already investigating these allegations, which if proven true, could turn into the next automotive scandal and perhaps leading to plummeting stocks for FCA.

For its part, the automaker has acknowledged that a federal investigation is ongoing. The automaker hasn’t elaborated on the finer details of the investigation, presumably opting to keep its mouth shut in preparation for a court defense.

PostHeaderIcon Has FCA been Reporting Fraudulent Sales Performance Reports to Investors?

Back in January of 2016, a civil lawsuit was filed against FCA by dealers in Illinois and Florida that claimed FCA was using dirty reporting tactics to pad its sales numbers. The suit came after FCA posted record sales numbers for December of 2015, and has finally garnered a lot of attention. According to Bloomberg, FCA is now being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Securities and Exchange Commission over the alleged sales padding scheme.

The suit filed back in January claims that FCA was paying dealers to create false delivery reports, which in turn, made it look like the brand was selling way more vehicles than it really was. There was also a similar lawsuit filed previously by a Maserati dealership, which also claimed FCA was paying its dealers to pad their sales numbers. According to Bloomberg, Fiat Chrysler announced that “an internal investigation concluded the padding allegations were baseless and the lawsuit was nothing more than the product of two disgruntled dealers” as early as January 14, 2015, but that wasn’t enough to keep investigators off their back.

In fact, multiple media outlets are reporting that the FBI and SEC hasn’t only raided FCA offices, but the homes of staff as well. According to Automotive News, Federal staff attorneys paid a visit to FCA headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan on July 11 and that employees were advised not to speak with investigators without counsel present. These allegations of performance padding, should they turn out to be true, could be a massive blow for FCA and could turn out to be the next big automotive scandal.

Keep reading to learn about what this means to FCA and why it is such a big deal.
