It looks like General Motors has decided to stop letting GMC play the second fiddle to Chevrolet’s offerings. The company has finally decided to let Robin get his own batmobile (Robmobile?!). GMC’s mid-size pickup truck, the Canyon, will be receiving an AT4 trim. The AT4 will be replacing the All Terrain trim in the Canyon’s portfolio, thus refreshing and hopefully boosting the sales of the pickup truck’s off-road version. As a bonus, the Denali trim also receives some new additions. It looks like a positive start of the year for GMC.

Performance pickup trucks seem to be the trend these days. There’s the Ram Rebel TRX and the Raptor, but this is not a new concept per se. The truck that needs to be credited for making us believe that these butch looking vehicles could actually go fast was the GMC Syclone. It debuted in the 90s and was fast enough to scare the holy hell out of anyone because there was nothing known as ’fast trucks’ back then. However, the truck did not succeed. But, seeing the demand and potential now, the GMC Syclone is all set to make a comeback. The 2019 GMC Syclone is a tribute to the original truck by Specialty Vehicle Engineering, and from what it’s worth, it sure looks exciting.

PostHeaderIcon Small Pickups Fall Short of IIHS’ Top Safety Pick Awards

Modern trucks are vastly safer than older vehicles, yet the Insurance Institutes for Highway Safety continues to move the bar. As such, four variants of the most popular mid-size pickups fail to meet the independent agency’s highest rating for crash survivability and headlight performance. Eight pickups were tested, including both extended and crew cab versions of the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier.

Of the eight trucks tested, four did not earn the IIHS’ best rating of “Good” in the front small-overlap crash test. These are the extended cab version of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, along with both cab configurations of the aging Nissan Frontier. The GM twins both earned an Acceptable rating, while the Nissan only earned a Marginal. The Frontier continued to score low in both the structural category and in the possibility of the driver sustaining lower leg and foot injuries. That’s not surprising considering the Frontier is 12 years old, having last been redesigned for the 2005 model year. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab earned a Good overall rating and a Good rating in each sub-category except for an Acceptable rating in potential lower leg and foot injuries. Even still, the Tacoma lacks any front crash prevention systems, excluding it from the IIHS’ Top Safety awards. Only the GM twins offer any such system, and even it only alerts the driver rather than stopping the truck, earning it only a Basic rating. Lastly, not a single mid-size pickup scored better than a Poor rating in headlight performance. It is understandable, though, as the IIHS only began testing headlights for the 2017 model year.

Mercedes-Benz just made quite the splash when it dropped the new X-Class. Framed as the first truly “upscale” pickup truck, the X-Class intends on redefining the midsize segment with unprecedented levels of luxury and refinement. It might seem like a strange combination to mate luxury with pickups, but as Mercedes points out, “the number of pickups for private use is increasing. They are no longer viewed purely as workhorses.” As such, the X-Class aims to broaden the pickup’s buyer appeal, seeking out folks like “land owners and farmers in Argentina, business owners and building contractors in Australia, families with an affinity for premium products in Brazil, trend-conscious individualists in South Africa and Great Britain as well as sporty adventurers in New Zealand and Germany.” Sounds like quite the collection of buyers. But here’s the thing – is the X-Class really all that revolutionary?

PostHeaderIcon 2017 GMC Canyon Denali

Rumors have been flying about GMC adding a Denali trim level to the Canyon mid-size pickup since its introduction for 2015. Heck, even GMC’s vice president of Sales, Duncan Aldred, has been quoted as saying he wants the range-topping trim level added to the mix.

It makes perfect sense, too. Every other GMC product offers the upgraded luxury version with distinctive exterior styling and swanky interior adornments – save for the Savanna van. What’s more, the Denali trim is said to account for roughly 25 percent of GMC sales, meaning customers crave that upscale appearance and feel.

Now those rumors are getting hotter as spy photographers have snagged the Canyon wearing insanely thin camouflage and upgraded wheels. But we here at TopSpeed aren’t content with blurry spy shots with some sweaty engineer in the cabin. No, we want a “professional grade” look at the upcoming luxo-truck.

And here it is.

Meet the 2017 GMC Canyon Denali – or at least our idea of it. Honestly though, the Denali trim is fairly easy to envision. Add the cheese grater grille, larger wheels, chrome accents, and premium paint and you’ve got yourself a Denali. It’s also a safe bet to call GMC on the model year now that the 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder is on the market for 2016.
