PostHeaderIcon The Hyundai Santa Fe Cabrio Is Real, But Not for Production

Hyundai is not yet sure it wants to make a full production version of the Santa Fe Cabriolet (and it probably won’t), but if it did, it’d be the world’s first seven-seater convertible… that’s also an SUV.

PostHeaderIcon 5 Affordable SUVs Worth Considering

I am presenting you 5 Affordable SUVs worth considering from a crazy, overfilled segment with more contenders than we can count. With the SUVs taking over the market at an unprecedented pace, I am pressed to find nice affordable SUVs you should actually consider before your next purchase.

No, I did not focus only on the cheapest, smallest or the best equipped – I actually tried to find some balance between the size, image, power output, and price. What I’ve found out is that quite a lot of rather formidable SUVs fall in the price category between $25,000 and $30,000. I picked out five of the SUVs that will be fast enough, that won’t break the bank, that have enough room inside, yet aren’t oddballs.

True, nothing surprising is on the list, but that may be just a sign that these five vehicles simply tick the most boxes of interest when it comes to new SUVs.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Santa Fe – Driven

The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is a perfectly suitable choice in the compact crossover segment. But with an all-new, redesigned Santa Fe coming for the 2019 model year, how competitive is the outgoing model?

PostHeaderIcon Wallpaper of the Day: 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe just entered a new generation, bringing about much better looks, nicer materials, more luxury, more room than ever, and an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission to go with it.
With that in mind, we were highly impressed by the new exterior design, so we decided to honor the new Santa Fe by making it our wallpaper of the day. We’ve included our hand-picked favorite but also threw a gallery in at the bottom of this page to give you a wide selection if you’re like to make your own choice. Go ahead and check them out – there’s not much in life that is free, but these certainly are.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Is Going All-In On Crossovers at The New York Auto Show

If you find yourselves in the Big Apple next week for the New York Auto Show, you’ll notice that Hyundai’s booth at the show will have a decidedly crossover and SUV feel to it. That’s the because the Korean automaker is preparing to showcase a number of crossovers and SUVs at the show. Among the models that have been confirmed include the new Santa Fe, a refreshed Tucson, and most importantly an electric version of the Kona crossover.

“While it’s true that some of these models already made their world debuts at the Geneva Motor Show, neither of them have been checked out by customers here in the U.S.”

While it’s true that some of these models already made their world debuts at the Geneva Motor Show — the Santa Fe and the electric Kona, in particular — neither of them have been checked out by customers here in the U.S. They’ll get their chance to do that at the New York Auto Show in a week’s time.

Both the Santa Fe and the Kona have something different to offer, too. The five-passenger SUV takes the reigns from its predecessor, the Santa Fe Sport, and slots just below the Santa Fe XL. As it was shown in Geneva, the new model will be offered with a few engine options, including a 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit that has 185 horsepower on tap and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that can produce 232 horsepower. Hyundai is also offering a 2.2-liter turbodiesel unit that will be available exclusively on the XL version.

The Kona EV, on the other hand, will get all of its power from an electric motor that produces 132 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque with a 39.2-kWh-battery that comes with an impressive range of 186 miles. If that doesn’t suit your fancy, the Korean automaker is also offering a higher-spec version of the Kona with an electric motor that produces 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque with a 64 kWh battery that can run on a single charge for a distance of 292 miles.

You might think that the Santa Fe and Kona are headed to New York as rehashed debutantes. That’s fair, considering where they were earlier this month. But, Hyundai is also throwing in a treat in the form a refreshed Tucson that will make its official debut in New York. Not much is known about this model, but previous spy shots have hinted at a major design change compared to its predecessor.

So as we count down to the days that lead up to the New York Auto Show, keep a keen eye on for Hyundai and all the crossovers and SUVs it’s bringing to the dance.

PostHeaderIcon Rendered: 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe N – Will Hyundai Go All In?

The next-generation Hyundai Santa Fe is knocking at the door. It’s scheduled to make its world debut on February 21, but that hasn’t stopped rendering artist extraordinaire X-Tomi Design from reinventing the next-gen Santa Fe and giving it the full-spec N experience. To be clear, Hyundai has given no indication of the likelihood of developing a performance-bred version of the Santa Fe. This is all speculation, but still, you can’t blame us for letting our imaginations go crazy. The thought of a Hyundai Santa Fe N sounds incredible.

Hyundai Drops a Pair of Teasers for the Next-Gen Santa Fe - image 763754
“The renderings Hyundai released last month show a completely new Santa Fe that’s far more aggressive than anything we’ve ever seen from its previous iterations”

The idea of a Hyundai Santa Fe N is awesome on paper, but until we get confirmation from Hyundai that it’s actually doing it, we’re not getting caught up on the potential of one happening. The good news is that even without an N version, the all-new Santa Fe looks to be headed for big things. The renderings Hyundai released last month show a completely new Santa Fe that’s far more aggressive than anything we’ve ever seen from its previous iterations. You can tell that the automaker’s designers did their homework in making the crossover stand out. We still don’t know what the interior looks like, but there are rumors that Hyundai is going to be generous in giving the new Santa Fe a string of new technologies.

What’s clear is that new Santa Fe is generating a lot of buzz. That’s great for Hyundai. Sales of the crossover in the U.S. reached record-setting numbers — 133, 171 units — in 2017. Imagine what an all-new Santa Fe is going to do once it hits the market. Who knows, if the next-gen crossover proves to be a hot ticket item, Hyundai might consider turning it over to the people over at the N Division.

We can dream, right?

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Teases Next-Generation Santa Fe

The fourth-generation Hyundai Santa Fe is well on its way, and Hyundai is building anticipation with the release of a new teaser image showing the SUV’s profile obscured in shadow. From what we can gather, the look includes a tight window line and reshaped designs for the headlights and taillights, both of which appear to be slimmer this time around. We also see a prominent lower character crease, roof rails up top, larger fender flares in the corners, a trailing edge roof spoiler, and shiny window trim.

The South Korean brand also revealed that the Santa Fe would come with the latest in safety stuff from its Smart Sense suite of technology, including features like rear cross-traffic alert, automatic braking, and for the first time, Rear Occupant Alert, which “monitors the rear seats to detect passengers and alerts the driver when leaving the car,” presumably to keep from leaving little ones behind on a hot day.

The Santa Fe was Hyundai’s very-first SUV model, and considering the popularity of the body style these days, it’s imperative the automaker keeps it feeling as fresh as possible.
Customers will be offered a three-row interior, but we’re also expecting the lineup to include a two-row Santa Fe Sport. Look for an in-depth look at the model in March at the Geneva Motor Show, plus a debut in February in its native South Korea.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai just showcased a facelifted version of the third-generation Santa Fe at the 2016 Chicago Auto show in hopes that the current generation would help make up for the brand’s lack of a full SUV lineup. Just a year later, our photographers caught up with what appears to be the next-gen Santa Fe testing on public roads. At a quick glance, it looks like the next-gen model will sport a look similar to that of the upcoming Hyundai Kona, including the thin running lights up top and larger headlights a little further down on the nose. It should get the same honeycomb grille design seen on the 2018 Elantra GT and will come with front-wheel drive as standard equipment. There’s no word on potential engine options or availability, but we suspect Hyundai will carry on with most of its current units, all of which should be retuned to deliver slightly better power and fuel economy.

There’s no word on when the fourth-gen Santa Fe will make its debut or go on sale, but we’re expecting an early 2018 debut and sales beginning later in the year as a 2019 model. That gives Hyundai plenty of time to drop some of the current camo and iron things out a bit, but let’s not waste any more time – it’s time to dive into this first test mule to see just what we can make out through all of that thick camo and padding.

Update 8/18/2017: It’s only been two months since the fourth-gen Santa Fe was caught stretching its wheels on the Nurburgring, and now it’s back out on public roads with less camo and a big smile. Check out the latest spy shots and what we can spot in the Spy Shots section below.

The next automaker to copy Top Gear – the old one, obviously – is Hyundai and the gig they have copied is the Polar challenge. Granted, it’s not an exact copy, as route is different and so is the car. They dispatched a tricked-out Hyundai Santa Fe to the Antarctica where it crossed  the continent in the hands of a British explorer.

The explorer in question is Patrick Bergel, the Great Grandson of legendary polar explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. He piloted the Hyundai Santa Fe from Union Camp to McMurdo and back again, which is quite impressive.

Now, they say the Antarctic Hyundai Santa Fe is near-standard which is kinda like saying Pamela Anderson is all natural. Those wide tracks, flared arches, jacked-up suspension, and massive off-road tires are as far away to the standard Santa Fe as Antarctica is to the Equator. But hey, it’s still a cool thing they have done here. The journey which took place in December 2016 was timed to commemorate the centenary of Shackleton’s heroic Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-16.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Santa Fe – Driven

Midsize crossovers are plentiful. They’re among the most popular vehicles on our roads today. As such, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe has its work cut out for it. After all, this is the segment of such titans as the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander.

Those who pay attention to the vehicles around them on the road every day probably see a lot of midsize crossovers. It’s a super-popular class. Right-sized and relatively budget-friendly, these are the station wagons of our day.

With so much competition, it would be easy to get lost in the crowd. Ask Mazda’s CX-9 – the slowest-selling in this class in the 2016 calendar year, not counting the oddball, high-priced Volkswagen Touareg. With that in mind, Korean automaker Hyundai has its act together, and sales bear this out: The company moved 131,257 Santa Fes in 2016, an 11.1-percent increase over the year prior.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Rockstar Santa Fe Concept

You know the 2016 SEMA Auto Show is approaching when you start seeing automakers drop press releases about wild iterations of its vehicles. And so, we find ourselves with one of the first gnarly custom jobs that’s headed to Las Vegas. It’s called the Hyundai Rockstar Santa Fe Concept and it is glorious.

Step back for a second and take in what used to be a mild-mannered crossover that has since been turned to an off-roading marauder. Notice how it’s been raised up and fitted with those massive 35-inch Baja tires? That was all part of Rockstar’s plan when it partnered with Hyundai to work on this Santa Fe. It also comes with a bevy of new features, both of the useful and cosmetic varieties, all of which were installed to give the Santa the unilateral purpose of driving on any road condition it finds itself in.

Obviously, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the Rockstar Santa Fe hit the streets anytime soon, but given what Rockstar was able to pull off – it even has a nitrous oxide injection system! – I wouldn’t be able to blame anybody who takes a good look at this beauty and demands Hyundai to send it into production, even in a limited edition capacity.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Santa Fe Team Wiggins Edition

Sir Brandley Wiggins is a seven-time Olympic medalist and was the first Briton to win the Tour de France. In the 2014 road cycling season, there was speculation that Wiggins would found a new team as part of his preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games. Sure enough, by the end of 2014, Team Wiggins had been formed. For 2016, Team Wiggins has partnered with Hyundai, who is providing a fleet of five different vehicles as a mobile support squad during 2016 Tour of Britain and other European races during the 2016 racing season. To commemorate this partnership, Hyundai is releasing a limited-production Santa Fe, dubbed Team Wiggins Edition. There is nothing major about the limited-run model, but this special Santa Fe is equipped quite well, sports some subtle Team Wiggins badges, and is actually priced to sell.

Hyundai’s marketing director, David Pugh, said, “We’re proud to be supporting Team Wiggins this year. Sir Bradley is one of Britain’s sporting icons, and his team is innovative, dedicated and full of perseverance. We share that ethos at Hyundai, and it’s great to be able to celebrate this successful partnership by issuing a desirable twist on one of our own icons, the flagship Santa Fe. The Team Wiggins Edition is packed full of equipment, looks the part but crucially offers great value too. Buyers will need to be quick to snap up the 500-car run.”

That value that Pugh is talking about is the official price of this limited-run flagship. It is based on the Santa Fe Premium SE, but is actually priced about £700 (about $943) less than the standard model and is being produced in just 500 examples. When speaking of the partnership between the team and Hyundai, Sir Bradley Wiggins said, “It’s great to be working with Hyundai this year – the company is a great fit with a really positive spirit and attitude. The diversity of the cars at our disposal has already proved invaluable in the Tour of Yorkshire, and the Santa Fe has been a big hit with the team. I’m very proud to put my name to this limited run of special Team Wiggins Edition models and am looking forward to putting the range through its paces over the summer racing season and beyond.”

With just 500 examples being produced, it is sure to be snatched up quickly – if not by cycling fans in Europe, it will certainly be snatched up by those looking to save a little money over stepping up to the Premium SE trim level. So, with that said, let’s take a better look at the Santa Fe Team Wiggins Edition.

PostHeaderIcon 2016 Chicago Auto Show – Best And Worst In Show

The gates are open at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, and with those pesky journalists finally out of the way, the public can now enjoy all the vehicular goodness that North America’s “largest” auto show can muster. Special editions, refreshes, and brand-new models all dropped cover this year, with crossovers and SUVs served up as the main course, and new sedans and sports cars added as a tasty side dish. Picking winners and losers here is not exactly easy, but hey, this isn’t some elementary school talent show. Time to be ruthless.

There were a few clear standouts for Best In Show right from the start, but cutthroat competition to fill the remaining slots quickly followed. Picking vehicles for Worst In Show was also pretty tricky, but that’s why they pay me the big bucks.

So, without further ado…

PostHeaderIcon 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Revealed with Many Upgrades

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe-1

One downside of making cars that are nothing more than appliances to be used and discarded is that you have to come up with a new version of the same product every year – kind of like what smartphone makers do. So here’s your 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with lots of new features and a revised look.

Introduced at the Chicago Auto Show, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe comes with a new look featuring redesigned front fascia, new head and taillights, new chrome tailpipes, LED Daytime Running Lights, 17-,18-, and 19-inch alloy wheels, and new silver accents. The new Santa Fe also comes in two new colors including Nightfall Blue (Santa Fe Sport) and Storm Blue (Santa Fe).

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe-2

The same sort of upgrades applies to the interior where depending on the model you get stuff like a 7” or 8” touchscreen display with Android Auto with Infinity audio, second-row cupholders, matte-finish interior woodgrain, power adjustable passenger seat, and Hyundai Blue Link. In terms of safety features, the list of ‘new’ equipment (all optional) include Multi-View Camera System, Smart Cruise Control with Stop/Start function,  Lane Departure Warning, electronic parking brake system with auto-hold, Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, and  Dynamic Bending Lights and High Beam Assist.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe-3

Engine-wise, 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe offers a choice between a 2.4-liter four-cylinder direct-injected engine with 185 horsepower or the more powerful, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower, plus a 3.3-liter Lambda II V6 engine with 290 horsepower for the Sport version. There is also a new Drive Mode selection with Sport, Eco and Normal settings.

Hyundai is slightly lacking when it comes to its crossover and SUV roster, which puts a lot of pressure on the Santa Fe to scoop up as many sales as possible in this increasingly popular segment. As such, Hyundai is wisely ramping up production, adding the two-row Santa Fe Sport to its plant in Montgomery, Alabama. More inventory is good, but just as important is an edge against the competition. In order to keep the Santa Fe as fresh as possible, Hyundai just announced a new mid-cycle update for the crossover at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show. On the docket this time around is a new look, new interior equipment, and new technology for safety and convenience.

The Santa Fe first debuted in 2001 as the automaker’s first-ever SUV, and a second generation followed five years later. The model’s current third generation debuted in 2012, and given the widespread circulation of spy shots that preceded the update announcement, there was little question as to what Hyundai had planned for Chicago.

While the update may appear rather mild at first blush, Hyundai says it changed almost 350 individual parts on the Santa Fe Sport – roughly a quarter of the car. Read on to see exactly what that means.

Update 05/18/2016: The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has received a Top Safety Pick+ Award from the IIHS after undergoing routine crash testing. Check out the Safety section below for more details.

PostHeaderIcon Hyundai Grand Santa Fe

The Hyundai Veracruz once sat in its own spot as Hyundai’s resident three-row, seven-seater SUV, one rung above the Hyundai Santa Fe->http://www.topspeed.com/cars/hyundai-santa_fe/ke1023.html]. Unfortunately, the Veracruz never quite caught on in the market despite having only been around since 2006. Sluggish sales and general indifference towards the model forced Hyundai to discontinue the Veracruz in 2012 to give way to the Grand Santa Fe, a similar three-row, seven-seater SUV that shared most of its architecture with the Santa Fe.

Unfortunately, Hyundai has yet to offer the Grand Santa Fe in the U.S. market, odd considering that the Veracruz was sold in this country during its brief existence. Canada, for what it’s worth, has the Grand Santa Fe, or as it’s called there, the Santa Fe XL. Maybe that’ll change in 2016, but Hyundai has yet to make any announcements on whether that’s going to happen.

What we do know is that a heavily camouflaged Grand Santa Fe was recently spotted doing some test sessions in Germany. These test runs on the German autobahn have intensified speculation that a facelift of the Grand Santa Fe is in the works, following a similar set of spy photos that captured the updated 2016 Santa Fe back in April 2015.

Despite the heavy camouflage on the test mule, Hyundai is unlikely to make any sweeping changes on the seven-seater SUV. In fact, if those spy photos of the 2016 Santa Fe didn’t appear to have any dramatic updates, we can expect the same kind of treatment on the 2016 Grand Santa Fe.
