PostHeaderIcon How usable is the back seat of small luxury coupes?

All sub-$50,000 luxury grand touring coupes these days have a seating capacity of four, which means they can theoretically carry two additional people in the rear. The manufacturers usually show a smiling young couple blasting through the countryside in the press photos, and rarely, if ever, four people having a blast. In fact, you wouldn’t even know there were people in the back of most of the cars on the list below.

There are five names on it: the names of the five most important models in the segment and the purpose is to compare their ability to cosset rear occupants… or not, as the case may be. Spoiler alert, none of them are particularly apt at doing it, even though they do have actual full-sized back seats, but if you were to pick yours based on this alone, this is how they stack up – I’ve arranged them in order from least to most spacious.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Project Black S Concept

Like pretty much every other major automaker out there, Infiniti is signaling a strong move towards electrification in the very near future, with a particularly heavy emphasis on the tech slated for 2021 and onward. While some enthusiasts will undoubtedly cringe at the thought of yet more battery-powered vehicles plying the roads, Infiniti is proving that such a fate is anything but boring, especially when it comes infused with technology plucked from the high-speed world of Formula 1 racing. Which brings us to the latest Project Black S concept, which recently made its big debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Offered as an evolution of the previous Infiniti Project Black S that dropped at the Geneva Auto Show a few years back, this latest creation is based on the utterly fantastic Q60 Red Sport 400 sports coupe, and provides both aesthetic and technical details on how Infiniti plans to implement hybrid technology to spark the interest of speed lovers everywhere.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Spills the Beans on Sexy Project Black S

The Infiniti Black S Prototype is proof that the technological divide between production vehicles and Formula One race cars is shrinking. The Hong Kong-based luxury brand of Nissan unveiled a modified version of the coupe at a private party in Paris, showcasing a hybrid electric powertrain developed by the Renault Sport Formula One team. The concept isn’t earmarked for production — not yet, at least — but it does offer a glimpse of Infiniti’s goal to use hybrid and electric powertrains on all of its models by 2021.

PostHeaderIcon Wallpaper of the Day: 2016 Infiniti Project Black S

Let’s not beat around the bush here. The Infiniti Q60 is like the girl next door of the car world. She’s sexy, teases you from a distance with her sweet curves, and has an attitude to back up her good looks. In this case, however, the Q60 has a hotter sister, and the Project Black S is it. Go ahead, you know you want to add some car porn to your desktop 😉

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Q50, Q60, and Q70 to Ditch RWD Platform for Hybrid AWD Architecture Starting in 2021

The Q50, Q60, and Q70 are all in dire need of generational evolution. But, don’t expect to see any of them until 2021 because Infiniti is still developing a new electrified platform with all-wheel drive that will take the reins from the aging FM rear-drive platform that’s currently underpinning all three models. Over the next three years, however, all three models will have to soldier on and hold the fort for Infiniti as it develops the next-generation platform that will underpin Infiniti’s models moving forward.

2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept

Raise your hands if you feel a little hoodwinked by Infiniti and its Q60 Red Alpha Concept. I know I have my hands in the air because I expected something completely different from this concept. But, that’s the beauty of the auto industry. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, it gives us a car like the Q60 Red Alpha. I don’t think I’m the only one who thought that the concept would be a traditional go-faster iteration of the performance coupe. You know, something along the lines of the Q50 Eau Rouge with some extra luxury offerings thrown in for good measure.

Instead, Infiniti went a completely different direction in achieving the same goal. There may be a significant power and performance increase, but any hints of wood or carbon fiber trim are not just in short supply, they’re non-existent, to begin with. What we do get is a gutted interior with a roll cage in the back, Mickey Thompson drag racing tires, and a racing parachute in the back. A racing parachute! Did anybody see that coming? Granted, the concept does also come with a range of performance parts that will be available in the future for Red Sport 400 versions of the Q50 and Q60. We can at least look forward to that. But everything else about the Q60 Red Alpha speaks about a car that’s been heavily modified for one purpose: drag racing. I will admit though that I’m a little curious on how it’s going to fare on a drag strip, even if it’s something that I completely did not expect.

Continue after the jump to read more about the Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept

Exterior

  • Matte Red paint finish
  • Mickey Thompson drag racing tires
  • Bogart Racing wheels
  • Carbon fiber rear wing
  • Racing parachute

“In essence, this concept isn’t so much about aerodynamic bits being added to the car as much as it is about the new equipment it’s actually carrying”

Boy, oh boy, where do I even start? On the one hand, the Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept still looks like a Q60. The front end still looks the same though it does get somewhat of a more sculpted bumper. The striking headlights are still the same. The front grille is still the same. The sloping hood is still the same too. It’s a similar story in the side and rear sections of the coupe, at least when you disregard the accessories that were fitted into the Q60 by Infiniti and AMS Performance.

In essence, this concept isn’t so much about aerodynamic bits being added to the car as much as it is about the new equipment it’s actually carrying. Let’s start with the wheels because no Q60 coupe will sit on a set of
Bogart Racing wheels and Mickey Thompson drag racing tires unless there’s a purpose behind it. The adjustable carbon fiber wing could be an exception, except that it’s been bolted in at such a weird angle that it makes you think once again that there’s a reason behind why it looks the way it does.

2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept - image 742578
“And then there’s the racing parachute”

Not only does the wing cover the taillight, but opening the trunk with that thing looks complicated unless Infiniti and AMS Performance designed it in a way that the trunk becomes an afterthought. And then there’s the racing parachute. Obviously, there’s no explanation needed for its inclusion because from the way the concept was prepared, it’s not something that you’d be driving to Whole Foods, but something you’re more likely to see in a drag strip.

Interior

  • Carbon fiber racing seats
  • Harness bar

2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept - image 742583
“Infiniti actually went the opposite direction for this coupe, preparing the cabin in such a way that it becomes more race-focused than it once was”

Apparently, there’s not a lot going on in the interior of the Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept, at least if your concern is what kind of new luxury upgrades it has. Infiniti actually went the opposite direction for this coupe, preparing the cabin in such a way that it becomes more race-focused than it once was. There are no clear photos of the interior, but I can at least make out the presence of a harness bar at the back of the front seats. Speaking of which, the seats themselves are now of the carbon fiber bucket seat variety, specifically added to not just shed some pounds off of the car’s total weight, but also to serve its new purpose as a full-fledged drag racer. It’s unclear as to how the dashboard and the center console look like but, if it the same philosophy applies, I don’t expect to see too much in the way of luxury trims and accents in those areas of the interior.

Drivetrain

  • Red Alpha Intercoolers
  • Red Alpha Intakes with Dry Media Filters
  • High Flow Exhaust Downpipes
  • Red Alpha Catback Exhaust System
  • Red Alpha ECU Calibration
  • High Capacity Overflow Tank
  • High Capacity Red Alpha Center Heat Exchanger

2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept - image 742576
“The Q60 Red Alpha Concept has around 467 horsepower and 452 pound-feet of torque at its disposal”

As surprising as the intent was of presenting the Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept as a coupe fit to drag race, there’s nothing surprising about the work that was done under its hood, especially since AMS Performance is involved. For those who are unaware, AMS Performance is responsible for some of the sickest and gaudiest aftermarket programs in the business today. This is the same tuner that was responsible for the 2,500-horsepower Nissan GT-R Alpha G R35. If there’s a tuner that knows how to crank up a car’s power and performance abilities, it’s AMS Performance.

And as expected, it did just that to the Infiniti Q60, which benefits from a long list of upgrades to its 3.0-liter V-6 engine, including the addition of new intercoolers, intakes with dry media filters high-flow exhaust downpipes, a high capacity heat exchanger, and the age-old ECU tuning kit. All together, it’s been reported that the Q60 Red Alpha Concept has around 467 horsepower and 452 pound-feet of torque at its disposal. The numbers have yet to be finalized though because Infiniti hasn’t confirmed – or denied – the exact power of the Q60 Red Alpha. What it did say is that the work of AMS Performance on the engine helped increase the latter’s output by 29 percent from its standard output of 400 ponies and 350 pound-feet of torque. Do the math on that and the numbers mentioned above ware the fact ones that come as a result of this extensive engine upgrade.

2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept - image 742585

I actually expected a little bit more owing to AMS Performance’s involvement in the creation of the concept, but I’ll let it pass on account of Infiniti’s plan to actually offer some of the products at its dealerships in North America. Likewise, AMS distributors will also get their hands on some of these upgrades in the near future. Either way, I do think that there’s still a lot more to the Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept than meets the eye. I can’t place my finger what the purpose there is in the creation of the Q60 Red Alpha, but rest assured, I’m all ears to learn more about it.

Conclusion

2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept - image 742575

This is a bit of pickle, isn’t it? Personally, I’m impressed that Infiniti and AMS Performance were able to turn the Q60 Coupe into a full-spec racer with drag racing credentials. That’s a difficult task in of itself, but it’s even more impressive when you consider that the Q60 Coupe isn’t exactly the first performance car you’ll think of as far as getting a drag racing makeover is concerned.

That said, I don’t really know what the plans are for the concept beyond using it as a showcase of the new engine upgrades that Infiniti and AMS Performance cooked up for the former’s existing lineup of coupes and sedans. Is there a bigger play involved here, one that’s going to conclude with the Q60 Red Alpha becoming the kind of performance car that makes the whole auto world stand up and take notice? Or is this the extent of the what the concept is all about? The answers should hopefully come soon enough because at this point, it’s hard to see what the real purpose of the Q60 Red Alpha Concept really is. I suppose it’s a mixture of a lot of different things, but I still don’t know if it’s going to be anything more than what’s been presented by Infiniti.

  • Leave it
    • The whole point still escapes me
    • No clue on whether the concept will turn into a production model
    • I like the Q50 Eau Rouge much better

PostHeaderIcon Is The Infiniti Q60 Project Black S Headed For A Production Run?

When Infiniti presented the Q60 Project Black S at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, it was tipped to be nothing more than a concept vehicle, a muscle-flexing opportunity of sorts to show what Nissan’s premium brand is capable of. Three months later, the Q60 Project Black S is back in the news, only this time it’s been loaded with appropriate Formula One technology that’s opening the door to the possibility of a production version in the future.

Does it mean then that we’ll see more of the Q60 Project Black S soon? That’s still a matter of debate, but the recent return of the concept sporting specially developed Pirelli P Zero rubber tires is an indication that something’s brewing within Infiniti that’s giving execs reason to reconsider its position on the 500-horsepower coupe concept. Even Tommaso Volpe, the head decision-maker of Infiniti’s motorsport division, isn’t shutting the door on the concept’s production future. “Pirelli’s input and knowledge, both motorsport and automotive, will be invaluable,” he said, referring to Infiniti exploring the feasibility of the Q60 Project Black S. It’s easy to get optimistic, especially with all the activity surrounding the concept these days. But like everything else, it might be best to not get those hopes up just yet. Remember, we all know what Infiniti’s recent history with these things has been. Shout out to the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge. We’re still waiting for you.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Project Black S

Infiniti introduced the second-generation Q60 Coupe at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show looking nearly identical to the concept that previewed it the year before. It comes to the market for 2017 with bold and aggressive styling, better efficiency over the outgoing model, and a revised suspension system, among other things. Its revised drivetrain includes two different engines with output ranging from 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque all the way up to 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately, the Q60 lost the available option of a manual transmission, leaving just a seven-speed automatic to mate with all engine options.

Now, the Geneva Auto Show is kicking off, and Infiniti as decided to participate in a design study of sorts that takes the Q60 Coupe and adds on a more aggressive body kit and a new high-performance, hybrid drivetrain inspired by Formula One. Dubbed the Project Black S, little is known about it, but Infiniti wants to use it as a basis to gauge customer interest in future high-performance Infiniti cars.

Roland Krueger, President of Infiniti, said, “Infiniti is the premium car manufacturer within the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and a technical partner to the Renault Sport Formula One Team, so it is natural that we come together to explore the possibility of bringing innovative, high-performance hybrid technology to our customers. Infiniti has constantly led the way in making innovative new powertrain technology available, and we’re extremely excited by the potential of Project Black S.”

The Project S is set to be revealed at a special event the night before the doors open at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show, so let’s take a close look at it before that happens.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Q60S – Driven

The Infiniti Q60, formerly the G37 Coupe, soldiered on for an absolute lifetime in car years without a substantial update. Finally updated for 2017, the Q60 is much improved.

The Q60 and its competitors exist in a relatively small end of the market, in raw sales numbers. Personal luxury sports coupes aren’t at the top of any automaker’s sales chart. That said, they’re fast, they handle well, and they’re sexier than the models that do top those sales charts.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Q60 Neiman Marcus Limited Edition

What does the Ford Mustang Convertible, the Maserati Ghibli S Q4 100th Anniversary, and the McLaren 12C Spider all have in common? Not a lot, right? Well, that’s not entirely accurate because of these cars have all, at point or another, graced the famous Neiman Marcus Christmas Book, the same book that reminds us of the upcoming holidays and is filled with items that most of us can only dream about. The catalog traditionally arrives around October, and on cue, the 2016 edition comes bearing another laundry list of luxury gift items, none more eye-catching than the Infiniti Q60 Neiman Marcus Limited Edition.

For $63,000, customers can line themselves up with a special edition Q60 Red Sport 400, complete with striking exterior and posh interior upgrades, including an ivory leather weekender bag and a branded car cover, to go with some pretty useful tech extras. It’s also limited to just 50 units, which makes it all the more desirable considering that prospective owners will only shell out an extra $10,000 to turn a standard AWD Q60 Red Sport 400 into this golden firecracker.

Those who do end up buying the Q60 Neiman Marcus Limited Edition should also take comfort knowing that for every purchase of the car, Infiniti itself will donate $1,000 to The Heart of Neiman Marcus Foundation. If all 50 cars sell out as expected, that donation could add up to $50,000, a nice sum for the foundation. Best be quick about making a decision though because reservations for the special edition Q60 can only be done by calling 844-367-6971, beginning at noon, EDT, on November 2, 2016

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Says No to Hardcore Q60, at Least for Now

The Infiniti Q60 initially rolled onto the scene at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show as a concept that looked to be nearly production ready. And, sure enough, it didn’t take long for Infiniti to announce the car we had all been waiting for. Packing a 208-horsepower four-cylinder in entry-level form or as much as 400 horsepower with a 3.0-liter V-6, the Q60 is Infiniti’s halo car of sorts that competes with models like the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 4-Series. With the range-topping Q60 Red Sport offering so much power, we’ve been hoping that Infiniti would take on the likes of the BMW M4 or Mercedes-AMG C63, but according to Car Advice plans for such a hardcore model don’t even exist at this point.

Car Advice caught up with Infiniti’s Senior Manager of Product Strategy, Gerardo Carmona, and asked him about a more extreme version of the Q60, but he did little more than let them down easy:

“That’s never going to be off the table, because Infiniti is all about performance, in a very sculpted and artisan way. But, unfortunately, it’s not going to come very soon. Everything is up for consideration, and we have a lot of options within the R&D group. Right now we’re focusing on the 400 horsepower and although we currently don’t have any ambition for this car to go and compete with the vehicles you’ve mentioned, as for doing something more, that is something we’re not yet able to disclose.”

With that said, there is at least a little bit of hope there since, you know, “that’s never going to be off the table.” But, it’s important to remember that Infiniti has always been a little more focused on luxury than performance anyway and it’s a small player in the grand scheme of things. The Q60 has the looks, and with the range-topping model pushing 400 ponies, it’s not exactly a slouch either, but how awesome would a 550 horsepower Q60 be?

Keep reading for the rest of the story.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Q60 Coupe

A full year has passed since Infiniti showcased the Q60 Concept, and the production car has finally arrived at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. Not surprisingly, the coupe is nearly identical to the what appeared to be a production-ready concept back in 2015, with only minor changes setting the two apart.

Styling aside, the new car is more powerful and efficient than the model it replaces, while its interior is more in line with those seen in similarly sized coupes from BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Other important changes besides the revised engines in the drivetrain department are the absence of a manual gearbox and a drive-mode selector with no fewer than six settings.

The new Q60 also comes with a lower center of gravity and a revised suspension system, both of which should make it more nimble than its predecessor and a better competitor to German coupes. The redesigned Q60 will go on sale late this summer for the 2017 model year. Until that happens, let’s have a closer look at the new coupe in the comprehensive review below.

Updated 09/09/2016: Infiniti revealed prices for the most powerful version in the Q60 lineup, aka the Red Sport 400. The company also revealed the car will begin arriving at Infiniti retailers nationwide this month.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Jumps Into Performance Segment With S-Badged Models

The Infiniti Eau Rouge performance line may not have come to fruition, but Infiniti isn’t about to throw in the towel on performance models just yet. On the contrary, the Japanese automaker is indeed pushing forward with a range of performance models, but instead of using the name of the famous section inside the Spa Francorchamps race track, it’s settling on a far simpler nomenclature by using an “S” badge on all of its performance models.

The automaker has already used the performance badge on the Q60 with the 400-horsepower Q60 S and the BMW M3-fighting Q50 S. Soon enough, the S badge will make its way into other models, most notably the QX50 SUV, a model the company is counting on to take the fight to some of the segment’s established performance SUVs.

Infiniti’s approach isn’t just about slapping an “S” emblem on its performance models. There’s a method to creating the lineup that ties into a plan of also creating some differentiation between the S-badged models. Infiniti president Roland Krueger made the distinction to Auto Express, describing it by attributing certain characteristics to a specific color. For instance, silver S-badged models are geared towards visual and performance modifications. On the other hand, blue S-badged models will feature the company’s direct response hybrid technology with red models making up the rest of the lineup.

Using color to denote a specific S-badged variant sounds a little quirky, but it’s also a subtle indicator that the company believes is an ideal first step towards creating a full-fledged performance lineup. Krueger didn’t say if this is going to lead to a separate performance division akin to BMW’s M division and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division, opting only to say that the company is going to take it one step a time.

PostHeaderIcon 2016 NAIAS: Infiniti Q60 Coupe

Infiniti Q60 Coupe-0

The fans of the old Infiniti G35 Coupe will be glad to find their favorite car is reincarnated in the 2017 Infiniti Q60 Coupe. The new name comes with new looks, powertrain, and features, making the Q60 a very enticing proposition.

No one can blame you for considering the Infiniti Q60 Coupe over more luxurious, more famous cars available in the sports coupe segment because the specs this car offer for the price bracket it fall in is just great. You have the choice of two engines, a very well sorted chassis, and a design that is expressive, but discreet and understated.

The powertrain options include a brand-new 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 with 400 horsepower, exclusively available with a rear-biased intelligent All Wheel Drive (AWD) system, and a 208 horsepower 2.0 liter turbocharged four-banger. The latter is rear wheel drive.

The power is further harnessed in the Infiniti Q60 Coupe by Dynamic Digital Suspension and Direct Adaptive Steering. With electronic systems there is always the worry that they ruin the driving feel of the car. But Infiniti promises this bad boy as agile and precise as can be without comprising the comfort and ride quality you expect from an Infiniti.

Other highlights include 19-inch wheels with 20-inch available, Drive Select Mode with six options of ‘Customise’, ‘Standard’, ‘Snow’, ‘Eco’, ‘Sport’, and – new for certain models – ‘Sport+’, Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) for the seven-speed automatic gearbox, and InTuition central control system inside the cabin.

PostHeaderIcon Standard Infiniti Q60 Will Deliver 400 HP; More Powerful Version Will Follow

Just over a month ago Infiniti unveiled its new Q60 concept in Detroit. It’s a 2+2 sport coupe using Infiniti’s current design language, that will be positioned against the likes of the BMW 4 Series, Audi A5, Cadillac ATS coupe, Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and the Lexus RC. At the time, we heard it would be powered by a newly downsized 3.0-liter V-6 with new pair of turbos, but power was still a question mark.

Speaking with an anonymous source within Infiniti at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, our friends at Auto Guide recently learned that the new road-going Q60 will produce 400 horsepower, with a sportier version to follow, producing as much as 450 horsepower. It’s the first we’re hearing of a hotter Q60, but we would like to think it will follow a template similar to the Nissan GT-R-powered Q50 Eau Rouge, with sportier suspension, more aggressive transmission mapping and some suitably angry-looking body work. Maybe even name it after another famous racing corner, say, 130R at Suzuka or Parabolica at Monza.

Whatever happens, it looks like we’re going to be waiting a while. The new Q60 isn’t expected to land in dealerships until late 2016. Frankly, that can’t come soon enough. The current Q60 is starting to look a bit dated in the face of much fresher competition within the segment.
