PostHeaderIcon Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Introduced in 2007 to replace the ageing S-Type, the Jaguar XF was redesigned for the 2016 model year. The makeover brought an evolutionary restyling but turned the four-door sedan in a sportier proposition on the outside and a more luxurious vehicle on the inside. The XF also received new drivetrains, most notably the company’s recently launched 2.0-liter four-cylinder in both gasoline and diesel formats. The 3.0-liter V-6 was also carried over, but with significant upgrades. Unlike the first-generation model, the second-gen XF arrived without a wagon version. This changed for the 2018 model year when Jaguar launched a redesigned XF Sportbrake.

Making things that much better, it’s available in the U.S. too!

The Sportbrake’s return is a bit surprising, especially since Ian Callum, Jaguar’s director of design, once predicted the death of the station wagon. But, while I’d like to know what made him change his mind, I’m actually glad that the Sportbrake is back in dealerships and especially in the U.S., where the midsize market was limited to just two models, with a couple more available in other niches. Sure, it’s still ridiculous, but with three different products in the premium market, we finally have some proper action going on.

The Jaguar XF was first introduced in 2007 as a replacement for the Jaguar S-Type and has been a fairly successful model, with 202,678 models sold between 2009 and 2016. In 2015, the XF went through a generational shift that didn’t change its overall design too drastically but did bring about the use of aluminum, allowing Jag to shed more than 400 pounds compared to the first-gen model. The second-gen model is offered with a wide variation of engines that include diesel and gasoline models, depending on the market. The 2.0-liter diesel engine gave buyers the option of a six-speed manual transmission, but going with the larger diesel or any of the gasoline drinkers sticks you with an automatic. An AWD system is available with some drivetrain configurations, and power output ranged anywhere between 161 and 375 ponies.

It’s only been two years since the second-gen XF rolled into showrooms, and for 2017, the U.S. model was updated to include a diesel engine for the first time. No other notable changes came with the 2017 model year, but 2018 might be a different story if these spy shots are any indication. The prototype you see here is wearing extensive camo for some reason and, while it’s hard to spot any real changes, there are a few. It’s way too early for Jag to be testing a third-gen model, so it looks like we may see a serious design update in the near future. For now, let’s take a better look at these spy shots and talk a little more about it.

PostHeaderIcon F1 Driver Romaine Grosjean Tests Jaguar's Smart Cone Technology With The Jaguar XF: Video

You know how most open-world racing games use periodic checkpoints to help keep you on course to the finish line? Well, Jaguar has developed something similar for the real world. It’s called “Smart Cones,” and it’s essentially a set of cones with LED lights on them. In this video, Jaguar has invited Romain Grosjean – and F1 racecar driver – to put the system to the test with the Jaguar XF.

As you’ll see in the video, the cones in the parking lot a scattered about, creating 11 different gateways that illuminate at random. As Grosjean drives through each one, he is scored on a number of factors, including how long it took to get from the last gate to the next, weather, driving conditions, and the car itself. Once the route is complete, a score report is generated. Grosjean set a score of 49,032.

With that said, it’s surely harder than it looks – you never know which set is going to light up next. Either way, it looks like a lot of fun. The best part about it, however, is that this challenge is part of Jaguars “Art of Performance” tour. The tour is hitting more than 600 venues in 46 different countries, where thousands of current and potential customers can give cars like the Jaguar XF, Jaguar XE, and even the Jaguar F-Type Coupe a run at the smart cones. So, go ahead and enjoy the video, then keep an eye out for the official schedule. Maybe you’ll get the chance to give it a run yourself.

PostHeaderIcon Jaguar Not Too Keen On Building Any More Station Wagons

The station wagon segment may always have its place in the auto industry, but one automaker is putting the lid on building up that market anytime soon. The automaker in question here is Jaguar, which is reportedly not entertaining the thought of building station wagon variants for its new sedan models. Design chief Ian Callum made that point known in a recent conversation with Automotive News Europe, explaining the difficulties in launching station wagons in a market that the company believes has reached a point of saturation.

Apparently, building wagons doesn’t make sense anymore from Jag’s business perspective and even if the automaker rolled out station wagon versions of the XF and XJ sedans, it would have a hard time competing in a market like Germany, considered as the largest wagon market in the world. Sure, Jaguar could take that route, but according to Callum, it would immediately be at a tremendous disadvantage against the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, all three of which already have their own respective wagons in the market. It might work if Jag could have a strong foothold in the U.K. market (the second largest market of wagons in the world), but as per IHS Automotive, the British market’s interest in wagons is slowly waning as the demand for SUVs continue to grow.

In Jaguar’s mind, why even bother building wagons when the demand for such cars are shrinking? The most sensible decision to make is to cut ties to the market and focus on one that has more potential in the short and long term. That’s one of the reasons why Jaguar is now shifting its focus on SUVs, as shown by the recent launch of the F-Pace. This new strategy allows the British automaker to channel its resources in a segment that has strong demand in every part of the world. The F-Pace is already out in the market and all signs point to the model immediately shooting up to the top as Jag’s best-selling model. These numbers aren’t lost on the Jag’s management and if recent reports are accurate, the British automaker will soon make room for a smaller SUV to sit below the F-Pace, called the E-Pace.

One thing’s pretty clear though. As Jaguar continues to dive deep into the SUV market, it’s doing so knowing that it’ll leave the station wagons behind.

PostHeaderIcon Jaguar XFL

For years, China has eagerly scooped up long-wheelbase (LWB) variants of popular luxury sedans, including models from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. Now, Jaguar will join the fray with an extended version of its second-generation XF. It’s called the XFL, and per tradition, it adds extra metal and offers more space around the luxurious rear seat to accommodate well-to-do business types in their daily to-and-fro.

The XF was first introduced in 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Just last year, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) dropped cover on the second generation at the New York Auto Show, quickly following it up with a few revisions early into 2016. Unlike the standard XF, the XFL was created specifically for the Chinese auto market.

The XFL will be the third vehicle in less than two years from a joint venture between the U.K.-based (and Indian-owned) JLR, and the Chinese state-owned Chery Automobile Co., which together form the Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Company Ltd. While designed and engineered in the U.K., the XFL is the first vehicle to be produced at the JV’s production facility in Changshu, China, making it the first Chinese-produced Jag.

“Jaguar Land Rover is a world-leader in the production of aluminum vehicles and is one of the largest producers of aluminum bodies globally,” says Murray Dietsch, President of Chery Jaguar Land Rover, in a press release. “The arrival of the all-new Jaguar XFL brings the best of this experience and technology to Changshu. It is an important milestone for the team at Chery Jaguar Land Rover.”

Updated 04/27/2016: The XFL just got a full reveal at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, so read on for all the official details.

PostHeaderIcon Jaguar XF-10

In 2003, Fuore Design debuted the Jaguar XF-10 concept car at the Barcelona Motor Show. The study was framed as an amalgamation between the two-seater Jags created in the ‘50s, and more contemporary Formula 1 race cars, combining old-school class with cutting edge go-fast technology. The Fuore team, lead by designer Erwin Leo Himmel, created the XF-10 with complete independence from Jaguar, merely asking for the marque’s permission in using the Jaguar brand name and badging. The goal was to persuade Jag to create something production-ready that mirrored the concept in shape and substance, as well as show off Fuore’s design chops. The result is a one-off two-seater sports car with unique styling and gobs of performance potential.

Taking a trip through the XF-10’s origins requires a passport and a translator – the “make” is British, the design team is Spanish, the lead designer is Austrian, and the builder (Modarte) is Italian.

That’s a lot of flags to pin to one name, which begs the question – does the XF-10 walk away feeling cohesive, or more like a big jumble of parts?

Jaguar first pulled the sheets on its XF mid-size luxury sedan in 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Since then, the lithe four-door has collected a good deal of critical praise, not to mention more than its fair share of sales. The second generation was introduced just last year, bringing significant updates like a lightweight aluminum body and higher levels of performance. Customers loved it, and the XF contributed nearly 29 percent of Jaguar’s total global fleet volume for the first 6 months of the year. Now, Jag is looking to keep the ball rolling, and it added new diesel power paired with AWD traction in order to do so.

Overall, it’s a pretty minor update, especially when you consider the furious turnover that is the industry norm these days. Nevertheless, the addition of a diesel to the lineup could be seen as a rather bold move given the current public perception of oil burners. Will it take the XF to the next level, or will it end up falling flat?

PostHeaderIcon TDI-Tuning Jaguar XF Diesel Delivers 341bhp

TDI-Tuning Jaguar XF

Jaguar is well-known for making the best – or should we say least worst? – diesel engines. They are potent and economical, and overall more refined than you would expect. But they are now being outdone by TDI-Tuning who has managed to improve an XF saloon beyond anything Jaguar themselves would have deemed possible.

The secret TDI-Tuning uses to turn Jaguar XF into a real sports saloon is called CRTD2 Twin Channel Digital Diesel Tuning Box. It needs a long name because this box of tricks enables the 3.0 liter V6 diesel engine in the XF to develop an extra 70 brake horsepower, while making it more fuel efficient by 4 to 6 mpg. That, you would agree, is amazing.

So your Jaguar XF 3.0 V6 diesel comes to TD-Tuning workshops with 271bhp and 443lb ft, and it leaves it with 341bhp and 514lb ft. It is now faster by 10 mph and more agile, and yet it burns less fuel and produces less CO2. And all it will cost you is £300.

“Long gone are the times when premium brands considered diesel derivatives the poor relation,” says TDI-Tuning Principal Graeme King. “Recently, the new Jaguar XE won ‘Best Large Car’ in the 2015 Diesel Car magazine Awards, beating the equally prestigious BMW 3-Series. Fuel economy and performance are no longer mutually exclusive, and owners still look for ways to improve both.”

PostHeaderIcon Jaguar XFR-S Looks Real Sharp in Matte Grey

Jaguar XFR-S Matte Grey-0

The official color – and by that we mean the one used the most by the company in the official press material – for the high-performance British sedan Jaguar XFR-S is a lovely sky blue. But some people may find that color a bit too soft and unassuming for a car with 550 horsepower and a nasty, nasty growl.

That where Metro Wrapz comes in, presenting this new wrap for the Jaguar XFR-S in a super cool matte grey. Now this is a color that will make people take notice of the car’s inner power. It gives the big cat more pizzazz and boosts its sex appeal, which is interesting, because matte grey in itself is a very cold color.

Be that as it may, that color is certainly the right choice for a car like the Jaguar XFR-S which all sort of sporty features such as large air intakes, a massive front splitter, huge rear wing, and a full on rear diffuser, not to mention four tailpipes. That grey wrap is complemented with gloss black grilles and accents which make the whole thing look even more special.

Engine-wise, the XFR-S is powered by a 5.0 liter supercharged V8 unit which with the help of an 8-speed transmission provides a 0-60mph time of 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds) and an electronically-limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h).

PostHeaderIcon Jaguar XF

The XF first broke cover at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, eventually making its way to dealerships in March 2008. It was quite successful, becoming Jag’s most-awarded car. Now, however, nearly eight years later, the British automaker felt as though the sporty luxury sedan is overdue for a change, and as such, the marque recently introduced the 2016 model year at the 2015 New York Auto Show.

Although its design is heavily based on the previous model, the new XF is actually a much more comprehensive update. The car is significantly lighter now thanks to Jag’s new commitment to constructing the entirety of its lineup from aluminum bodies, and it’s quicker than its predecessor as well. And although some of the new drivetrain components launched in 2014 might not make it stateside, the new XF has plenty of new features to brag about. Keep reading for the full details.

Updated 07/11/2016: Jaguar dropped a new video in which it wants to explain why the XF is the perfect car to “chase” storms. Hit “play” to watch storm chaser ‘Tornado Tim’ Baker driving the Jaguar XF through America’s Midwest in search of a tornado.

PostHeaderIcon 2016 Jaguar XF To Be Unveiled On March 24

Introduced as a modern-looking replacement for the more-traditional S-Type at the end of 2007, the Jaguar XF is nearing the end of its cycle. The next-generation XF will be unveiled on March 24 in London. That’s not overly exciting, you might say, but the really interesting bit is how the model will be unveiled. Jaguar has contracted an expert stuntman, known for action stunts in movies from the James Bound, Jason Bourne and Indiana Jones franchises, to perform a dramatic high-wire water crossing with the new XF.

Details are limited at the moment, but the 2016 XF will apparently drive across two steel wires, suspended above water, with Jaguar saying that the feat should emphasize the “lightweight and agile credentials” of the new model. “I believe the all-new XF will be the best looking car in its class. Elegant, handsome and with proportions that imbue a great sense of integrity – the all-new XF will be true to the strong tradition of sporting Jaguar saloons while being completely of its time.” said a none-too-modest Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar.

The next-generation XF will be the second Jaguar to be developed on the company’s new aluminum-intensive platform, which is shared with the new XE and the upcoming F-Pace crossover. With lower weight, the 2016 XF will likely have improved fuel economy and will extract more performance from its engine lineup, which will consist of four-, six- and eight-cylinder powerplants.

PostHeaderIcon Jaguar XF R-Sport Black

Just because it has a cool name and a few upgrades doesn’t automatically make the Jaguar XF R-Sport Black a great buy. Check out why we think it may be best to pass on this one at TopSpeed.com.

With the expected arrival of the new XF at the New York International Auto Show in April 2015, Jaguar is throwing a few extra odds and ends at the current range of vehicles, creating a new derivative labeled the XF R-Sport Black in the process. The British automaker wants you think you’re getting excellent value for your money, stating the R-Sport Black “offers an additional £8,770 ($13,322 as of 1/22/2015) worth of value over standard R-Sport models for just a £2,100 ($3,190) increase to its On-the-Road price.” However, is it really worth ignoring the new XF to spend more on a soon-to-be outdated vehicle packing a bit more standard equipment?

Creating specialized, last-minute spinoffs of a model slated for the dustbin is standard operating procedure in the car world, and given the XF’s popularity over the last year, the announcement of the R-Sport Black shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

In addition to the new variant, Jaguar is also adding new specifications to the Luxury, R-Sport, Portfolio, Diesel S Portfolio, XFR, and XFR-S models, with some even gaining slight price hikes as a result (including the R-Sport). Clearly, JLR is confident that interest in the XF line will stay strong. In fact, the XF recorded its best year of sales in 2014, which makes the new R-Sport Black a likely candidate for success.

The R-Sport Black is available in either a saloon four-door or Sportbrake body style. Upgrades include new exterior features and interior accouterments, but sadly, the drivetrain has remained unaltered. Still, the R-Sport Black doesn’t represent a major cost increase over the standard R-Sport model, especially when you consider the minor price adjustment seen with this most recent refresh.

But the question remains- is it worth the money?
