PostHeaderIcon The 2020 Land Rover Defender’s Interior Leaks Online, Showing a Huge Leap Forward in Design

Land Rover has been very secretive about its ground-up new 2020 Defender (in the works for over five years now) that will probably make its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Now, for the first time, we’ve found a photo of the 2020 Defender’s interior, and we’re pretty sure Land Rover is not too keen on it having been shared.

PostHeaderIcon The 2020 Land Rover Defender Could Be Revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show

Land Rover has been working on the Defender project for over five years now, and from an exterior perspective, it seems like a long time for a vehicle to be developed and for that development to not be completed. But the all-new Defender is now in the final stretch, which is why we’ve been teased with a shot of a camouflaged prototype for the first time.

PostHeaderIcon Land Rover Teases The New Defender

Land Rover teased a picture of a new off-roader yesterday. Although the company hasn’t mentioned the name or any other details, we are guessing it’s the new Defender. The off-roader, in the picture, is seen ramping out of a trailer, covered in zebra camouflage, looking kind of like a Mercedes G-Class. What an early Christmas present this is!

PostHeaderIcon Land Rover Wants to Take on the Mercedes X-Class and Toyota Hilux with a Single-Cab Defender Pickup

Land Rover is one of the few brands in the auto industry that abides by its identity unflinchingly. It’s known for building some of the finest SUVs in the world, and it stays in its own lane. When was the last time you heard Land Rover consider a sedan as part of its lineup? Never? That said, the automaker has shown its willingness to stretch its identity a bit. We saw it when it launched the Range Rover Evoque earlier this decade. Now, we could be seeing it again in the form of a single-cab pickup that will be based on the upcoming Defender.

PostHeaderIcon The Most Useful Land Rover Defender Can Fit Inside Your Wallet

The Land Rover Defender was known for being one of the most functional cars in the world. It was built to drive on any road surface and its all-world toughness has become one of its most enduring features. Unfortunately, the Defender is in a bit of an influx today as Land Rover prepares to launch the next-generation model. Fear not, though, because there is a Land Rover Defender that’s currently on the market that has no shortage of useful functions. Best of all, it costs under $20. Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on the Land Rover Defender multitool device.

The Most Useful Land Rover Defender Can Fit Inside Your Wallet - image 766447
“The little steel gadget has 11 different functions, including six wrenches that come in different sizes”

Ok, so it’s not really as functional as an actual Land Rover, but that’s not the point. The credit card-sized multitool is a handy tool in its own right. All in all, the little steel gadget has 11 different functions, including six wrenches that come in different sizes. It also has a flathead screwdriver, a cutter, a tire tread gauge, and even a bottle opener that lets you open your favorite brewski as a pat-in-the-back for buying the thing.

Aesthetically, the multitool comes in the shape of a Defender and even comes in a faux suede pouch that you can fit inside your wallet. If you want to show it off to your buddies, there’s a hole near the tire tread gauge that allows you to put the multitool on a key ring. That’s probably not the best idea, but it is pretty cool to look at so I can’t blame you for showing it off.

I know Christmas is over, but there’s no stopping you from buying the tool for yourself. You can even buy it for the purpose of giving it as a birthday gift, or you can be like most mothers who buy Christmas gifts a year early. There’s no stopping you from getting one so might as well look into it to see if it fits into your lifestyle. Given its plethora of functions, I’m convinced that you’re going to need it.

If it’s still not your thing, you can wait until the end of the year or the early part of 2019 to buy the actual next-generation Land Rover Defender. The automaker has not given a definite timetable, but reports suggest that we could see the revived SUV around that time period.

PostHeaderIcon A 50-Year-Old Coal-Powered Steam Land Rover? Yup, There’s One Out There

If there’s anything the iconic Land Rover Defender proved in its 67-year run that concluded in 2016, it’s that it could be used in a variety of ways. Whether it was used as a military car, an off-roader, or even as an expedition car, there was no purpose the OG Defender couldn’t fulfill. Apparently, as one British man proved, it can also be turned into a fully functioning coal-powered steam car.

Meet Frank Rothwell. He’s a 67-year old retired British businessman man who happens the own one of the most unusual custom Land Rover Defender 88 models in the world. On the surface, we can still make out traces of its old identity. The body still has the Defender 88’s styling cues. but the recessed grille has been replaced by boiler front with a working chimney for the coal smoke. There’s even a Land Rover badge thrown in there for good measure, presumably to keep up with the appearances.

Rothwell said that he spent around £24,000 (about $34,000) on the project after buying the Land Rover for £4,000 (a little more than $5,600). From there, Rothwell spent more than 400 hours working on the conversion, most of which were used in fitting a coal-fired boiler that heats water into steam that is used to power the steam engine. The result speaks for itself.

The Defender 88, or whatever remains of it, now looks like something Jeremy Clarkson would build after one of his old late night benders.

Functionally, Rothwell claims that his Defender can top out at speeds of 15 mph with a full head of steam. It’s not much, but it’s enough for him to make his usual trips in and around town. More importantly, the car represents something of a love project for his grandchildren. “I think it’s really good for children of this era to do things like lighting fires and using coal,” he says, “because they have little access to using things like that these days.”

PostHeaderIcon East Coast Defender “Project Beast”

2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast”

The name “Defender” carries some serious weight in the world of off-roading. With a long history of military service and simply unflappable talent off-road, this iconic model from Land Rover serves as the bones for myriad capability-focused vehicles. Florida-based auto shop East Coast Defenders knows this well, making its name building custom versions of the British model for enhanced style, greater interior comfort, and even greater agility while traversing the great outdoors. Now, ECD is invading the sands of Vegas with its latest custom build, dropping the sheets at the 2017 SEMA show. The project was a collaboration with Warn Industries, a manufacturer that specializes in vehicle recovery equipment, and is based on a Defender 110 model from 1985. Created by hand and equipped with a litany of custom parts, ECD appropriately calls this build “Project Beast.”

Framed as an “elite off-road SUV,” Project Beast was actually completed in 2016, built in ECD’s “Rover Dome” in Kissimmee, Florida. All told, it’s got the right stuff for attracting attention at SEMA. Read on for more.

Continue reading to learn more about the East Coast Defender.

Exterior

  • Classic Defender shape, enhanced
  • Kahn wide body kit
  • External roll cage
  • LED light bar on the roof
  • Custom wheels

2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast” - image 741535
“ECD outfitted Project Beast to play the part of a hardcore rough-stuff killer”

From the off, it’s pretty obvious this is no ordinary Land Rover Defender. ECD outfitted Project Beast to play the part of a hardcore rough-stuff killer, giving it the look of an unstoppable black cube that merges British engineering with American know-how.

The classic four-door exterior styling remains, including the extended rear cargo area and a multitude of broad, flat body panels. However, to this classic shape, ECD added a variety of enhancements.

2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast” - image 741530
“The most eye-grabbing feature is the Kahn wide body kit, which adds some serious girth to the exterior dimensions”

The most eye-grabbing feature is the Kahn wide body kit, which adds some serious girth to the exterior dimensions. Then there’s the external roll cage, which sweeps up from the A-pillar and into the roof, then down again into the rear fenders, adding impressive protection in the event you accidentally tip this thing over. Illuminating the view forward is a large LED light bar, which finds its home just above the windshield.

The front fascia appears to be freshened with a new grille insert, while the new fender flares add extra chunkiness. Filling to extra space are custom wheels, matched in back by a spare of the same design. Finally, the whole thing was slathered in flat-black paint, lending it even more attitude.

Interior

  • Keeps the standard Defender layout
  • Lots of high-end upholstery
  • New seats

2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast” - image 741522
“Inside, you’ll find modern Defender mixed with luxury, with ample coverings of sumptuous hide and stitching.”

Step into the cabin of this thing, and you’ll find a very nice place to be. While the floor gets tough rubber to help rebuff whatever muddy mess you bring with you, the rest of it is modern Defender mixed with luxury, with ample coverings of sumptuous hide and stitching. Indeed, everywhere you look, there is some kind of quilted leather, from the seats, to the door panels, to the center console, to even the dash.

Behind a three-spoke steering wheel from Momo, ECD included the standard three-pod gauge layout, albeit modified to include additional readouts and data, not to mention the requisite ECD plaque below.

2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast” - image 741525
“The seats themselves are elaborate buckets that should do well to hold passengers in place”

The seats themselves are elaborate buckets that should do well to hold passengers in place, while seating for three additional passengers can be found on the second-row bench. Meanwhile, copious space in the cargo area means you’ll be hauling whatever you need to bring with you, whether its gear, supplies, or even more passengers on the fold-out seats.

Drivetrain

  • Chevy LS3 V-8 powerplant
  • Automatic transmission
  • 4X4 traction

2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast” - image 741543
“Output is rated at a healthy 430 horsepower, which is pretty much standard for the powerplant”

As you might imagine, East Coast Defender wasn’t content to keep their build stock as a rock under the hood, so instead, this burly trail buster comes equipped with a brand-new Chevy LS3 small-block V-8, the same engine you’ll find driving the rear wheels in the Camaro SS and the Corvette. Output is rated at a healthy 430 horsepower, which is pretty much standard for the powerplant. However, ECD does say it incorporated a good deal of custom work to make the engine function properly in the Defender platform.

The rest of it includes an automatic transmission routing power to the ground by way of a robust 4X4 drivetrain. And just in case you still can’t find the traction from those big tires, there’s a winch from Warn on the nose to help pull you free.

Conclusion

2017 East Coast Defender “Project Beast” - image 741533

“What we’ve created with our custom Defender and Range Rover Classics, fits into a highly niche market. We strip each vehicle down to its frame and complete it according to our client’s exact specifications,” says ECD co-owner Elliot Humble.

That’s exactly the right approach for a SEMA build. The further away from factory you can get, the better. Of course, ECD took care to keep the Land Rover’s inherent off-road worthiness intact, adding to it with the right components, rather than detracting from it with superfluous accouterments.

Kudos.

  • Leave it
    • Custom build = expensive
    • More extreme off-roader builds out there

PostHeaderIcon Of Course The Next Land Rover Defender Will Be Electrified

People might act surprised when automakers release a new fully electric vehicle or a hybrid version of an old favorite. Ford, for example, says a hybrid version of the F-150 is coming. There’s even talk of a hybrid Jeep Wrangler in the next few years. As such, it should come to nobody’s surprise that the next-generation Land Rover Defender will also have an electrified drivetrain. What exactly that entails, not even Land Rover has the specifics nailed down. Add to that Land Rover’s official statement confirming every one of its models will have an electrified version by 2020. So yeah, the next Defender will be electric in some way.

It would be a safe bet Land Rover will use a similar hybrid drivetrain found in the recently revealed Range Rover P400e and Range Rover Sport P400e. The system consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with an 85-kW electric motor sandwiched between. A 13.1-kWh lithium-ion battery supplies the power, while regenerative braking and engine power recharge the battery when in motion. When parked, a P400e’s battery is plugged in for charging. Impressively, both P400e versions have an all-electric range of 31 miles.

As for the new Defender, it’s reported to abandon the traditional body-on-frame design for Land Rover’s modern, aluminum-intensive unibody architecture. The Defender is expected to keep its tradition of a two-door soft-top and a four-door hard-top version. We’re just hoping it retains the boxy shape that’s made it an icon. Land Rover is expected to debut the Defender sometime in 2018 with production versions hitting dealerships worldwide in 2019.

Why It Matters

2013 Land Rover Defender - image 470987
“Here’s the thing: EV and hybrid powertrains are here to stay”

Here’s the thing: EV and hybrid powertrains are here to stay. We’re not getting rid of them, and they will soon be found in virtually every vehicle type and category. Thankfully, with their proliferation, the tree-hugging and granola-eating stigma surrounding them will fade. In many respects, that’s already well underway. As a result, having a hybrid Land Rover Defender or Ford F-150 or Jeep Wrangler won’t be some assault to cultural norms. It’ll just be the new normal.

Of course, having a hybrid Defender brings several really positive aspects. First, the SUV won’t suck as much fuel and will cost less at the pump. Second, the low-end torque provided by the electric motors is perfect for off-roading. Third, having the battery packs located low in the SUV should help its on-road handling, too. It won’t be as top heavy or have the propensity to roll over during a crash.

“The hybrid powertrain will add cost, though nobody will be buying a Land Rover because it’s economical”

Naturally, there are downsides, too. The hybrid powertrain will add cost, though nobody will be buying a Land Rover because it’s economical. It also adds complexity. Though all modern vehicles are far trickier to repair under a shade tree, fixing a hybrid system should be left to the professionals. Then again, a full EV drivetrain has very few moving parts, are easily made watertight, and should have very little chance of “breaking down” without warning. That would certainly be a welcomed feature for those overlanding through the African plains or Amazonian jungles.

PostHeaderIcon Last of the Current Land Rover Defender Rolls Off the Line

Last Defender-0

In a big ceremony at the Solihull production facility, and in presence of more than 700 current and former employees as well as high-profile guests, Land Rover celebrated the end of production for the current generation Defender. So after 68 years, the old Landie we all know and love arrives at the end of the line.

But do not despair. Land Rover already has a new Defender in the pipiline, and from what we’re hearing it is pretty much the same as the current model, only less sh*t to drive. That is good news for people who have tried to run a Defender as a family car and know how agricultural the thing can feel at times. The new one will undergo a dies to lose weight and gains a better cabin as well as more comfort and convenience features. But the design, crucially, will remain similar to the original.

During the ceremony the last vehicle off the production line, a Defender 90 Heritage Soft Top, met the first first pre-production ‘Huey’ Series I, and they both joined a display of more than 25 unique vehicles from Land Rover’s history. You can now expect to see a ton of tributary models from tuners and aftermarket specialists – cars like The End Edition Kahn Defender we showed you before.

Nick Rogers, Group Engineering Director at Jaguar Land Rover, added: “This is a special day of fond celebration for Jaguar Land Rover. We all have personal memories of Defender. It’s a true motoring icon and is much loved around the world. The world has changed dramatically in the last 68 years, but this vehicle has remained a constant – something no other vehicle can claim. The last of the current Defender models embraces the vehicle’s simplicity, honesty and charm – it represents its Series Land Rover heritage. Creating the Defender of tomorrow, a dream for any engineer or designer, is the next exciting chapter and we are looking forward to taking on that challenge.”

PostHeaderIcon Afzal Kahn Designing the Ultimate Defender

Kahn Ultimate Defender

Looks like after years of working on Land Rover Defenders, Afzal Kahn of Kahn Design is finally been recognized for his expertise in modifying and customizing these cars. London Motor Show has asked him to come up with an Ultimate Defender as a tribute to the legendary SUV.

Kahn’s Ultimate Defender will be a retirement gift for the car which will soon be replaced by a new model. That new model is said to be pretty similar to the old one, which makes sense, but the original will always be a bit more special.

In designing the Ultimate Defender, Kahn is to give the one-off car a contemporary feel while emphasizing its iconic features. Chances are we will see a lot of Kahn’s Chelsea Truck Defenders in the celebratory model, including the wide track body kit and tweed interior. You can take part in designing this car by telling Kahn what you think should be included in it using #UltimateDefender.

Afzal Kahn explains: “I have designed a vehicle that celebrates the history and unique personality of the Defender. My designs are known for their attention to detail, so I didn’t want this Defender to be any different. This is a fitting tribute to one of the world’s best loved vehicles and I would welcome feedback from Defender owners and enthusiasts alike who are welcome to visit my Kings Road boutique in Chelsea.”

PostHeaderIcon Land Rover Defender 2,000,000 to be Auctioned

Land Rover Defender 2Mil-1

The two-millionth production Land Rover Defender is set for one last big show before it gets auctioned off for charity. The one-off Landie will go public display for Series Land Rover and Defender heritage exhibition at Bonhams London on 15 and 16 December.

The exhibition will celebrate 67 years of UK production and pays homage to the Defender itself as one of the world’s most iconic car designs. It will include a ‘hall of fame’ which highlights the car’s movie career driven by the likes of Steve McQueen and Daniel Craig, and also its role as a supporter of the British government and the Royal family, having served Sir Winston Churchill and Her Majesty The Queen.

Land Rover Defender 2Mil-2

But it’s not all about the high life. The Defender is also a hero of the commoners, having played a major role in expeditions as well as rescue missions all around the world. It is the boxy shape of a Defender you see hurrying to rescue distressed public wherever calamity strikes – a fact documented by a wall dedicated to capturing the moment that Land Rover made an impact on people’s lives.

Following the exhibition, the Land Rover Defender 2,000,000 will go under the hammer with all proceeds from the sale to be donated in their entirety to International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Born Free Foundation. So get bidding!

PostHeaderIcon Kahn Defender Double Cab in Aintree Green

Aintree Green Kahn Defender-0

Kahn Design has been very much into Defender pickup trucks lately, and rightly so, as these things look way cooler than the regular SUV Defenders they have been making for years. The latest Kahn Defender truck is a Double Cab Chelsea Wide Track in a quintessentially British color called Aintree Green.

You get all the usual goodies with this Kahn Defender Double Cab, including X-Lander front grille, side vents with a stainless steel mesh, a new bumper replacement complete with integrated daytime running lights and shadow chrome headlamps, extended front and rear wide wing wheel arches with exposed bolt apertures, a stainless steel hood and Chelsea Truck Company spare wheel cover.

There is also a set of 9” x 20” Mondial wheels in Volcanic Black with 275 x 55 x 20” tyres, painted brake callipers and toughened mud flaps. But if we’re honest we’re not really feeling the covered pickup truck bed with that cheap looking tent. It looks really rubbish and has to go. The good news is, you won’t see that when you are inside the cabin and enjoying the front and rear Sports GTB seats trimmed in quilted and perforated black leather, hard-wearing floor mats, and your Churchill clock.

The Aintree Green Kahn Defender Double Cab is based on a  2.2 TDCI 110 model and costs £32,875.

At this year’s Salon Prive show renowned tuner Overfinch is celebrating a remarkable milestone with a remarkable car. The Overfinch Land Rover Defender 40th Anniversary model is a special take on the iconic British SUV by an iconic British firm. The result is one of the classiest Defender 90s we’ve ever seen.

40th anniversary is something truly worth celebrating, especially for Overfinch, since they came very close to going bankrupt not that long ago. The fantastic Overfinch Land Rover Defender anniversary model is limited to just five units that are built to order at an undisclosed price.

As for the features and specs, Overfinch has been tightlipped on that too, but we can notice in the pictures the car comes with a two-tone paint work featuring silver bonnet and custom grille, as well as headlight bezels, complemented with polished aluminium door handles and fuel cap against a black body. Custom bumpers and running boards, guards and a set of tailored wheels are among the other highlights on the outside.

Inside the cabin Overfinch Land Rover Defender 40th Anniversary benefits from a healthy amount of leather garnished with contrast stitching. You will find it on the dashboard, steering wheel, headlining and the seats. There is also bespoke carpets, sport aluminum pedals, and carbon-backed bucket seats for the front row with ’40’ logos embroidered on the headrests.

Flying Huntsman 6x6-0

The magnificent Flying Huntsman 6×6 by Kahn Design is not exactly hot news. In fact, it was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show back in March. But now the British coach-builder has released a bunch of new photos of the car, giving us a better idea how crazy it really is.

There has been some controversy about the design and the very philosophy of the Flying Huntsman 6×6 since it was first previewed in early 2014. Some may it’s an utterly idiotic thing that makes no sense at all, while others accuse Kahn of copying Mercedes’ idea in making a 6×6 version of the G-Wagen. For our part we think the Huntsman is creative and cool machine, and a very awesome toy to have in one’s collection.

The highlights of Kahn Flying Huntsman 6×6, which is based on a Defender 110, include a 400mm extension to the bonnet and an 800mm extension to the rear cabin, the addition of a third axle a two front-wheel and four back-wheel configuration with 9” x 20” Volcanic Black Mondial wheels, a 430-hp GM LS3 V8 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and an upgraded stainless steel exhaust system, upgraded suspension and braking, hi-lo ratio drive system and locking differentials.

This Volcanic Rock Satin monster also boasts a lavish interior featuring Red Leather Sports seats with 100% wool Abraham Moon Skye Almandine inserts, quilted and perforated centre glove box, Churchill time clock fascia insert and a single spoke steering wheel.

Startech Land Rover Defender-0

Following their Geneva Motor Show onslaught which focused solely on British cars, German tuner Startech is back at it, this time making a celebratory version of the old Landie Defender they call the SIXTY8. As the name suggests, this Startech Land Rover Defender celebrates the off-roader’s 68-year production run. Wanna guess how many they are making?

Trying to represent a quintessentially British look, Startech Land Rover Defender SIXTY8 comes with a two-tone paint job with Corris Grey Metallic for the body and Santorini Black roof. The SUV also gets Startech Monostar D 18 inch alloys and tinted panoramic glazing for all rear windows, plus custom grille and bumpers and an aluminum underride guard with SIXTY8 logo.

Startech has done a brilliant job with the interior on the SIXTY8, wrapping most of the cabin in plush in Tan Light Brown and Ebony Black leather. The seats feature diamond quilting while the center console is adorned with an ALPINE multimedia system with 3D navigation and backup camera.

The limited edition Startech Land Rover Defender SIXTY8 is priced at EUR 67,990 for the five-seater and EUR 69,900 for the seven-seater. Those are steep prices, especially as the car only has a 120 hp 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine. That said, it is one of the most unique takes on the Defender we’ve ever seen.
