PostHeaderIcon Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S.

“25” may seem like a random number in the auto industry, but ask any self-respecting collector in America the significance of this number, and they’ll tell you all about it. For those who don’t know, “25” in this context means “25 years,” as in the number of years that need to pass before a car that was not originally produced in the U.S. and was not subjected to strict U.S. guidelines for crash tests can now be legally imported and registered for road use.

The rationale behind the NHTSA’s 25-year timetable has left many collectors confused and frustrated. The word “overkill” has even been used many times by a number of collectors we talked to. But that’s the rule; it is what it is.

The good news is that every year, a batch of these forbidden fruits become ripe for the picking by virtue of them finally meeting the 25-year criteria imposed by This year, car models from 1992 finally got their “welcome to America” status. Whether there’s still interest in any of them is a different story altogether. The important thing is that they can now be registered for road use here in the U.S., giving them the opportunity to finally touch thousands of miles of roads that were previously forbidden to them.

Continue after the jump to read the full story.

Autozam AZ-1

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747301

Let’s start this list with a complete oddity. The Autozam AZ-1 is the rare car that manages to be cool and strange at the same time. It traces its roots to Mazda’s short-lived Autozam marquee, which specialised on building small cars, otherwise known as keicars in that market. In the five years that Autozam was around, it developed a full lineup of these cars, one of which was the AZ-1. It’s hard to tell what the AZ-1’s defining feature was because there’s enough of them to go around. It could be the gullwing doors. It could be its mid-engine layout. Heck, it could even be its flamboyant styling. Whatever it was, the AZ-1 was ahead of its time in a lot of different ways.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII - image 46657

Technically, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has already made its way into the U.S. market. But that didn’t happen until 2003 when the Evo VIII became available. Unfortunately, the first seven versions of the street-legal rally car remain unicorns in the American market, at least until this year when the first iteration of the Lancer Evolution turns 25 years old. It’s now legal to register the OG Evo in the U.S., and the next few years should also open the doors for succeeding versions of the all-wheel-drive hero ride when they hit their respective magic numbers.

Ford Escort RS Cosworth

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747300

The Ford Escort RS Bosworth sits in the same wheelhouse as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in that both trace roots to the rally racing world. Like the Lancer Evo, the Escort RS Bosworth was homologated for road use in 1992. It even received a good number of Cosworth bits and pieces, including the iconic YBT engine that has developed a cult following of its own. That engine was capable of producing 227 horsepower and together with its top-flight handling and all-wheel drive capabilities, it was able to run on any kind of surface and speed up to around 137 mph. Having been built by Ford of Europe, the Cossie never made it to the U.S., at least until this year when all 1992 models received their 25-year entry cards.

Alfa Romeo RZ

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747302

Alfa Romeo has produced its share of memorable cars in its history, but very few captured the hearts and wallets of people like the RZ convertible. Designed in collaboration with Zagato, the RZ featured dramatic styling that emphasized the stylistic strengths of the Italian design house. It also came with a 3.0-liter V-6 engine that produced 210 horsepower, enough power to help make it a serious performer on the road. Combine that with the car’s race car-derived hydraulic suspension and those who are willing to spend time and money to bring the RZ to the U.S. could have a car that can grab serious attention.

BMW M5 Touring

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747303

The BMW M5 Touring is not the sexiest car in this list. It might not even be the most prominent of its body type (more on that later). But it makes its way here because it achieved unicorn status when its sedan counterpart made its way stateside in 1992. That model went on to do well here in the U.S., but those who preferred the wagon version we’re out of luck. That all changed when the calendar flipped to 2017. Sure, it’s 25 years too late for the M5 Touring, but it’s worth noting that the car’s classic look still makes it a desirable piece of vintage BMW. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s powered by a straight-six engine that produced 311 horsepower.

Subaru Impreza WRX

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747304

As awesome as it is to own a 1992 BMW M5 Touring, I’m not taking it over a same-year make of the Subaru Impreza. It was back in 1992 when the first versions of the Impreza came to life, and the performance-spec WRX variants quickly became sensations to every market they were sent to. Sadly, the U.S. was shut out from getting the OG Impreza WRX, depriving us of a car that featured a number of rally-inspired technology, including an all-wheel drive system, a stiffened suspension, and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that came with 240 horsepower. 2017 is the first year that we can get our hands on the car that started the WRX legacy. Now that the opportunity is here, expect a lot of collectors to try to get their hands on one.

Maserati Ghibli

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747305

When Maserati introduced the third-generation Ghibli at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, it brought back a name that the Italian automaker hadn’t used since 1998. That was the last year of the second-generation Ghibli’s six-year production run, which began in 1992. The second-gen Ghibli will never upend the first-gen version in my mind, but if you’re looking for a four-door performance sedan from the early 1990’s to buy, few offer the kind of stories that the second-gen Ghibli has. Its persona non grata status in the U.S. for the past 25 years may be its defining trait, but it also came with some notable features, including a 2.0-liter V-6 engine that produced in excess of 300 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to a standard six-speed manual transmission, the second-gen Ghibli was capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds on its way to posting a top speed of 156 mph.

Porsche 911 Carrera RS (964)

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747316

The Porsche 911 Carrera RS (964) is a good example of a car that should be bought and registered as soon as it became eligible for road use in the U.S. It’s not as iconic as its predecessor, but it’s still the real deal. Emissions and safety regulations prevented us from enjoying it when first came out, but now that it’s been unshackled, you can get one this year in all its glory, including its 3.6-liter flat-six engine that produced 256 horsepower. In the event that you’re looking for one, you need to be quick at it because the model is already making a good case for itself as a sought-after collectible among Porsche collectors. Just last year, a 1991 Carrera RS 964 sold for around $200,000, roughly the same price you’ll have to pay for a brand new Porsche 911 Turbo. Now go imagine what the 1992 model will fetch in the same setting.

Honda NSX-R

Banned No More: Cars From The Class of 1992 That Can Now Be Registered In The U.S. - image 747317

The last two cars on this list are without question the most desirable ones to get. First up is the Honda NSX Type-R, or NSX-R for short. You’ll get varying opinions about the original NSX-R, but those opinions most likely fall under the awesome and really awesome categories. Not only is the NSX-R regarded as the model that really brought to life Honda’s Type R brand, it also set a standard for performance cars that’s still held in high regard to this day. It doesn’t have mind-blowing power numbers — “only” 276 horses from a 3.0-liter VTEC V-6 engine — by today’s supercar standards, but everything else about the NSX-R is still impressive even by today’s standards. It was 256 pounds lighter than the standard NSX. It had a cabin that came with lightweight carbon-Kevlar seats. It had forged-aluminum Enkei wheels. It even had a stiffened chassis and suspension that made it potent on the track. The NSX-R’s legacy is cemented by its current status as a sought-after collectible among car collectors. It’s next to impossible to find one of these models today carrying anything less than a six-figure price tag.

Jaguar XJ220

1992 - 1994 Jaguar XJ 220 - image 677818

It’s only fitting that the holy grail of the “batch of 1992” is one of the first modern supercars to capture the world’s attention. The Jaguar XJ220 was, at one point, the fastest production car in the world. That record-setting achievement was largely due to a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produced 550 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. With that kind of power, the XJ220 was able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 212.3 mph. The supercar’s stranglehold on the “fastest production car” title even lasted for a few years until the McLaren F1 came along and beat it. That’s not a diss on the XJ220, but a compliment to how impressive of a supercar it really was. It took the McLaren F1, arguably the most important supercar of the modern automotive era, to usurp the XJ220 as the fastest production car in the world. To say that the Jaguar XJ220 is sought after in today’s collector’s scene is a gross understatement. It’s already reaching six-figure price tags on account of its status (only 275 were made) and history, and as the years go by, those prices will only go one direction: up, up, and away.

PostHeaderIcon Pops’ Rants: The New BMW M5 Isn’t Worth the Premium; Audi’s Naming Strategy is Dumb

It’s Friday again, and I’m having a bad day. And I’ll probably have a bad weekend too because I just found out that FCA will shut down the Conner assembly plant in a few days. Why is this a big deal? Because the Dodge Viper will die along with it. Yeah, it’s no big surprise. The Viper had it coming, and we knew it would happen since 2015, but the thought of America’s greatest modern muscle car being killed off is depressing. And please don’t tell me about the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Challenger Demon, this is a sad day for American sports car enthusiasts regardless of what other performance vehicles you can get.

And, you know what bothers me more? The fact that FCA does nothing about it. Yeah, Chrysler claims the Viper has to die due to slow sales, but we all know that’s not the reason. It all has to do with new safety regulations, which require that all production models have side airbag curtains. And, you can’t fit them in the current Viper. It needs a new platform and a new design. So why isn’t FCA making a successor? It’s too expensive obviously, and it would rather go bankrupt with a bunch of crappy cars rather than a performance coupe. So many decades of experience and FCA still doesn’t know that an iconic car requires a lot of work. But enough about the Viper, it’s been a hectic week.

PostHeaderIcon Maserati Ghibli GranLusso

Introduced in 2013, the Ghibli became Maserati’s second four-door sedan. Smaller than the Quattroporte, it was developed as a competitor for the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It’s also the first sedan that slots under the Quattroporte since the four-door version of the Maserati Biturbo was discontinued in 1994. The Ghibli name was revived after a 15-year hiatus, but it’s the first time when it’s being used on a four-door sedan, as both the first- and second-generation models, produced between 1967-1973 and 1992-1998, were offered as two-door coupes and convertibles only. After four years on the market, the third-generation Ghibli received its mid-cycle facelift.

In a strategy that reminds of Ferrari, the Ghibli was renamed the Ghibli GranLusso. The “GranLusso” isn’t new though, as Maserati is already using in on a trim level of the upgraded Quattroporte. The revised sedan made its debut at the Chengdu Motorshow in China with updated bumpers and side skirts, improved aerodynamics, and new features. The drivetrains carry over unchanged, but this is far from surprising given that both the GranTurismo and Quattroporte didn’t get engine upgrades with their facelifts. Still, there’s plenty of changes to talk about, so join me in my review for the full rundown.

PostHeaderIcon Official: Maserati Ghibli GranLusso

Following the success of the Quattroporte GranLusso Maserati has now come up with a Ghibli featuring the same treatment. Set for debut at Chengdu Motorshow in China, Maserati Ghibli GranLusso is “s restyled and enriched with additional high-tech features.”

The luxury sports sedan should be instantly distinguishable from its regular siblings. Maserati Ghibli GranLusso comes with a new front bumper with dedicated chrome inserts and new front grille with chrome bars, as well as body-color side skirts, GranLusso fender badges, new rear bumper, and rear diffuser. Maserati says the new component make the Ghibli more aerodynamic besides giving it a cooler look.

In terms of features, Maserati Ghibli GranLusso comes with Adaptive full LED Headlights with glare free Matrix High-Beam – also contributing to the distinctive look – and active ADAS functionalities which is Maserati’s ticket for entering the world of world of autonomous driving. Although why in the world would you want a Maser that drives itself is a question we don’t know the answer to. Why would you pay all that money and then give the joy of driving a fine Italian sports sedan to a computer?

PostHeaderIcon Maserati Ghibli Nerissimo Edition

The current Maserati Ghibli was introduced in 2013, reviving a nameplate that was produced between 1967 and 1998. Unlike its predecessors, which were offered as two-door coupes and convertibles only, the new Ghibli is a four-door sedan. Sharing underpinnings with the larger Quattroporte and the recently launched Levante SUV, the Ghibli is the first Maserati to use a diesel engine. The oil burner is offered alongside two versions of the twin-turbo, 3.0-liter, V-6 gas-drinker that was co-developed with Ferrari. At the New York Auto Show, the Italian firm launched the Ghibli Nerissimo, a limited-edition model with bespoke features inside and out.

The name Nerissimo is based on the Italian expression for “extremely black,” and there’s a good reason why Maserati selected it for this car. Although it’s identical to the standard model as far as design goes, the Nerissimo is an all-black take on the midsize sedan. It’s essentially Maserati’s very own version of the Chevrolet Midnight Edition, but in a more elegant package and with a more expensive sticker. The Nerissimo Edition is limited to only 450 units, which explains the rather hefty premium you have to pay for an appearance package.

On the other hand, the Ghibli is quite gorgeous in this black suit and adds a bit of style to an otherwise aggressive-looking sedan.

PostHeaderIcon Google Showcases Android Prototype Operating System On The Maserati Ghibli: Video

Tech giant Google is adding yet another page to its involvement in the auto industry by showcasing a concept Android system on a Maserati Ghibli during it’s annual I/O 2016 conference.

Dieter Bohn of The Verve managed to get an up-close look at the concept Android system, which can be accessed through a massive portrait-oriented touchscreen display that takes up all of the space on the Ghibli’s center console. According to Google, the purpose of this prototype is to showcase the future of what its Android platform can do for cars. Considering that Android Auto is already available today, this prototype is probably several versions higher than that. A big part of this new prototype is to integrate a majority of the Ghibli’s functions into the Android system, essentially turning the operating system into the car’s brain, controlling even the simplest of functions like the power windows.

It’s a big step up from what’s currently available in the market and if the technology comes to pass, a day could come when a lot of cars cabin systems – possibly more – will be powered by the Android system. It’s an interesting thought and one that could be a big part of the next evolution of the auto industry.

PostHeaderIcon Mansory Maserati Ghibli Kit Revealed

Mansory Maserati Ghibli-1

Mansory has come up with a fairly thorough upgrade kit for the Maserati’s smallest and least expensive model, the Ghibli, but you wouldn’t know it’s a high-end tuner car just looking at it. Mansory Maserati Ghibli is uncharacteristically understated.

At a glance, Mansory Maserati Ghibli package includes an ultralight carbon fibre bodywork, 22-inch sports wheels, powerful performance enhancements and interior makeover treatment. The body kit consists of a two-part front lip with optional additional air ducts around the air intake, rear lip and rear diffuser. They don’t show up very much on this black example, but on a white one they should look pretty good.

The new body components are complemented with a set of Trident design MANSORY alloy wheels in sizes 9.5×22 in the front and 10.5×22 at the rear shod with Vredestein high performance tires of size 255/30R22 and 295/25R22. Moving inside, the main highlights of Mansory Maserati Ghibli include sports steering wheel and aluminium pedals as well as leather and special trims in pretty much any color you can think of.

As for the performance, Mansory has prepared a kit for both the Ghibli S and Ghibli Diesel. The petrol-powered one gets 480 bhp / 640 Nm (Standard 410 bhp / 550 Nm) while the diesel gets 310 bhp / 680 Nm (Standard 275 bhp / 600 Nm).

Wald Maserati Ghibl-R1-0

In a joint project between Wald International, Royal 1 Motorsport and ADV1 Wheels, one man is now driving around in a heavily tricked-out, extremely attractive Maserati Ghibli. Basting a unique grey paint work and gold ADV1 rims, this Wald Maserati Ghibli is quite possibly best tuned version of the car in the world right now.

Sure, you have the Novitec Ghibli and that G&S Ghibli, but neither have the visual impact of this custom model right here when you first lay eyes upon them. Wald Maserati Ghibli comes with a tailored body kit featuring front spoiler, side skirts, rear diffuser, and rear boot lid spoiler. What R1 has done is customize these parts and wrap the whole thing in a very classy color which they have aptly names Battleship Grey.

As for the wheels, they are ADV5.2 MV2 SL in polished bronze – even though they look golden to us – measuring 21×9 inch on the front axle and 21×10.5 inch on the rear. Come to think of it, the best course of action here would be to get this kit for the looks of your Ghibli, and then install Novitec’s performance upgrade for the S model which delivers up to 476 hp and 640 Nm of torque.

PostHeaderIcon G&S Exclusive Maserati Ghibli EVO

GS Exclusive Maserati Ghibli-0

Nothing with a Maserati badge at the front needs tuning and upgrading really. That is why G&S Exclusive Maserati Ghibli comes only with a few subtle tweaks. They do, however, add up to have a profound effect on the way the car looks and feels.

G&S Exclusive Maserati Ghibli, known as EVO, features a number of carbon fiber accessories on the outside which are not that visible as to qualify as a body kit, but nevertheless improve the already great design of the car. You get small grille inserts for the bumpers, two chunky carbon pieces which could be called front spoiler, subtle boot lid spoiler, and a rear diffuser.

Other bits and pieces include carbon door handles, blacked-out roof, carbon mirrors and side vent inserts, smoked lights, and black tailpipes. The new components are then complemented with a set of OZ Racing 21-inch 3-piece wheels finished in black with white outer lips, featuring 30mm spacers which is why they look so imposing under the car.

G&S Exclusive does not offer any performance upgrade for the Ghibli, but you can order lowering springs or coilover suspension and headlight upgrades. If you get the V6S version of the Ghibli, you won’t need a power upgrade anyway.

PostHeaderIcon Maserati Ghibli Wrapped in Matte Black Suede

Maserati Ghibli Matte Black Suede-0

The guys from Impressive Wrap are some of the most creative people in this business. Doing unique, and often weird, colors is the norm for them, but every once in a while they come up with something that is properly nuts, even by their own standards. This matte black suede Maserati Ghibli is one such thing.

A normal, run-of-the-mill matte black was obviously not something the owner of this Maserati Ghibli would find attractive enough. So IW designers did a bit of brainstorming, and maybe smoked a couple of joints, and came up with this unique treatment for the Italian sedan.

The main feature of the treatment is of course the matte black suede that covers most of the body. It looks like a sort of textured matte black and has a pretty cool look about it which is really easy on the eyes. The main wrap is complemented with satin black painted wheels and golf chrome accents on the front spoiler lip, rear diffuser, side vents, and door handles.

This whole thing of course is not something that would appeal to everyone. We quite like the suede wrap because it’s unique and kinda cool, but the gold accents are a bit too much for our taste. Then again, this is a much nicer thing to do than wrapping the entire car in chrome gold as some people like to!
