PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG CLA45 Shooting Brake

In recent years, Mercedes-Benz made huge steps toward expanding its vehicle lineup. Its new products not only gave the Germans access to previously unexplored markets, but also helped create completely new segments. One such model was the CLA. Introduced in 2013 as a smaller and affordable proposition to the sleek CLS, the CLA was a huge success in both Europe and the U.S. in its first two years on the market. In 2014, Mercedes added a wagon to the CLA lineup, calling it the Shooting Brake.

Also a smaller version of the CLS Shooting Brake, the coupe-styled compact wagon received an AMG version in 2015, powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder used in the A45 AMG. For 2016, the CLA Shooting Brake received the more powerful engine from the facelifted hot-hatch. Only a year has passed since then, and Mercedes has prepared yet another upgrade for the Shooting Brake.

Unveiled alongside its standard sibling and sedan versions, the AMG CLA45 Shooting Brake receives its first mid-cycle facelift. Not surprisingly, modifications are mild and include revised bumper sections, new wheels, and new trim for the interior. Unfortunately, there is no word whether the Shooting Brake will finally come to the U.S. or not. Given that most automakers have quit selling wagons Stateside, chances are this sleek grocery getter won’t cross the pond to the U.S. for many years to come. Still, the CLA45 Shooting Brake is a unique vehicle worth checking out and that’s exactly what we’ll do in the review below.

Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 (C/X117), 2016

So after introducing the new Mercedes CLA Facelift to you in four-door coupe format, let us now have a closer look at the more fancy version of the car, the 2017 Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake. This one offers all the goodies of the regular model plus a healthy dose of style and panache.

What’s particularly cool about the CLA Shooting Brake is that you get the desirable features of a coupe, such as sloping roof and frameless windows, plus the extra practicality of a big boot at the back. It is essentially like a wagon but not boxy and uncool. Some say the unique form of a shooting brake is even nicer than a normal coupe.

And if that is still not enough for you, the 2017 Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake also comes as CLA45 AMG which gets sportier bumpers and aero parts as well as bigger wheels and some extra chrome. This model also has a dense 374 horsepower turbocharged four cylinder engine.

Speaking of the engines, we’ve already told you about the CLA 250 models launching in the UK, so now let’s check out the other powertrain available for the European version. First we have the CLA 180 d BlueEFFICIENCY with a measly 109 hp but excellent fuel economy of 3.5/3.6 l/100 km. Then there is the CLA 220 with 4MATIC delivering 184 hp, CLA 200 d with 136 hp, CLA 220 d with 177 hp, CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY with 122 hp, CLA 180 also with 122 hp, CLA 200 with 156 hp, and finally the CLA 220 4MATIC with 184 hp.

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG CLA45

We have been seeing partially covered prototypes of this car out and about for a while, but now the new 2017 Mercedes CLA Facelift goes official, revealing all that was hidden behind the camo. And it isn’t much, really. Just some lightly modified bumpers and new light-alloy wheel designs.

To be fair, more has happened inside the cabin of 2017 Mercedes CLA, where you get new seat covers and trim parts, as well as chrome-plated controls. There has been an upgrade in the level of equipment the car comes with, including the addition of LED High Performance headlamps, HANDS-FREE ACCESS, and enhanced smartphone integration.

But design-wise, a pair of revised bumpers inspired by Mercedes new corporate look is all you get. Changes are a bit more noticeable on the CLA 45 AMG model what with it being the sporty version with a more aggressive look. But even if you want one of the regular models, you can customize the look using more than six new wheel design and optional treatment such as the Night Package and Sport Package.

Other notable highlights of the 2017 Mercedes CLA Facelift inside the cabin include a freestanding 8-inch media display with a new-style glass cover, matt black ash wood, black DINAMICA microfiber trim, and chrome-plated control. Equipment-wise, the car is as Benz as you’d expect, available with  Active Brake Assist as standard, DYNAMIC SELECT, and…

The CLA Facelift launches in the UK with two engines. The regular version is the CLA 250 powered by a 208 hp four-pot, and it can be had with two or four-wheel-drive. The better version is the CLA 45 AMG with a 375 hp turbo-four and the ability to go from 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds.

Mercedes just dropped details on the refreshed CLA a week before its big debut in New York. The changes are minimal, but do include a few tweaks to the styling, plus new amenities for the cabin.

Let’s start with the exterior, where both the sedan and shooting brake model receive new bumpers, a standard black diamond grille, and new wheels. Silver, chrome, or black trim can be found on the nose, while the rear can be optioned with a selection of trim between the bumper-integrated exhaust tips. There’s also a new exterior paint option (cavansite blue metallic), plus five different 18-inch wheel designs, including a new five-spoke roller from AMG. LED headlights are available.

Convenience features include a hands-free loading system, and AMG models even get an optional trailer hitch.

Inside, there are new upholstery options, such as a beige/black leather combo, while the interior trim gets finishes like a sail-look, black ash wood, black microfiber, and honeycomb aluminum. There are also chrome-plated controls, new dials and needles for the gauges, and enhanced smartphone connectivity. Infotainment is routed through a new, slimmer 8-inch display screen.

The CLA’s various drivetrains are unchanged in the refresh. Eco warriors will enjoy the CLA 180 d BlueEfficiency Edition, which has a 109-horsepower engine that emits just 89 g/km of CO2, while those looking for something sportier should check out the AMG model, which ups the aggressive styling outside and incorporates 381 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque under the hood.

The 2017 CLA Coupe will make its debut at the New York International Auto Show next week, while the Shooting Brake version will debut during the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin this April. Order books will open in April, with deliveries commencing in July.

PostHeaderIcon Fairy Design Mercedes CLA Wide Body

Fairy Design Mercedes CLA-0

Japanese tuner Fairy Design has come up with a new wide body kit for the Mercedes CLA which gives the little four-door coupe the girth, and attitude, of a muscle car. Fairy Design Mercedes CLA is the most insane version of the car you can buy today… if you live in Japan.

The thing is, the CLA is a cute and cuddly little Benz one would imagine is appealing most to young college kids and, you know, ladies. Neither of those demographics are that into wide body kits, especially such extreme body kits. Fairy Design Mercedes CLA kind of looks like a small man who has taken an inordinate amount of steroid and sort of grown out of his own body!

The styling package on this Fairy CLA consists of front and rear over fenders – which have something of a Liberty Walk design about them – front lip spoiler, rear diffuser, and a cool ducktail rear boot lid spoiler. If you want the full effect you have to also get a set of large and wide wheels and also sport lowered suspension.

The cost of Fairy Design Mercedes CLA is 600,000 Yen in Japan. There is no talk of a performance upgrade, but if you go for the CLA 45 AMG model you won’t need one anyway.

PostHeaderIcon Loewenstein Mercedes CLA “SAPHIR”

Loewenstein Mercedes CLA-0

When you hear the name Loewenstein, you probably think it’s a Jewish tuner who is in the business of lowering cars. And that is somewhat true. But there is more to what they do, as shown here with this brilliant Loewenstein Mercedes CLA 45 AMG dubbed Saphir (Sapphire).

Being based on a CLA 45 AMG, Loewenstein Mercedes CLA starts out with 360 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. The AMG four-cylinder turbo engine used in this model is undoubtedly one of the engineering marvels of our time. Still, with only one hour work and installing a plug&play power module, Loewenstein Manufaktur can boosts that output to 410 horsepower and 530 Nm.

Those who want still more can opt for a sport catalytic converter with a carbon fiber hood featuring an integrated air intake system complete with sport air filters. These changes will result in a total output of 425 horsepower and 540Nm – not a significant gain given the number of mods and their cost.

You are better off getting the 410 hp kit and spend the rest of your money on the wide body kit exclusively designed for Loewenstein Mercedes CLA. Consisting of an RS front spoiler and rear diffuser and a 3-piece rear wing, the carbon fiber kit adds 20mm to the girth of the little CLA at the front and 40mm at the back. Lowered suspension and a set of 20” concave wheels complement the kit.

Last but not least, Loewenstein offers a seres of interior upgrades for the CLA Saphir, including sport steering wheel, new upholstery, door and dashboard trims, and floor mats.

As one of the newest models in the Mercedes-AMG lineup, the CLA45 AMG has a lot to live up to. Fortunately for Mercedes-AMG, the performance-oriented sedan has been up-to-task with that, as it has established itself as a worthy competitor to more established rivals like the BMW M3 and the Audi S3. Owners of the CLA45 AMG have very little to worry about the car, and now, they have even more reasons to celebrate now that Loewenstein has introduced its first tuning kit for the sedan.

In line with its past works, the German tuner focused its attention on giving the CLA45 AMG improved performance capabilities. That’s the focus of the program, although a new wide body aero kit, a new set of wheels, and a carbon fiber-dressed interior are also part of the checklist. Overall, its a relatively comprehensive kit that touches on a lot of important aspects of the CLA45 AMG. There are no suspension modifications and that’s a little bit disappointing. But, given the variety of options it had on how best to approach the CLA45 AMG, I’d say that Loewenstein did a really good job at improving as much as it could on the car without disregarding its “AMG-ness”.

Loewenstein didn’t offer any pricing information about the program so prospective customers are advised to contact the tuner directly to get a quote on the tuning kit.

With station wagons losing ground to the ever-growing crossover segment, shooting brakes aren’t doing very well either. Things are worse in the U.S., where very few automakers still offer wagon or shooting brake body styles. Mercedes-Benz is the only brand that can brag about offering two shooting brakes (based on the CLA and CLS), but neither of them are available in North America.

With the CLA sedan selling like hot cakes in the U.S., Mercedes’ decision to not offer the CLA Shooting Brake on these shores is difficult to explain. And while we’re trying to figure that out, Europe is getting ready to welcome an update version of the sleek wagon.

According to a new batch of spy shots we just received from our paparazzi, Stuttgart is already working on a facelift for the CLA Shooting Brake. A bit surprising since the wagon was unveiled only two years ago, but Mercedes seems determined to update its entire lineup of compact vehicles through 2016.

So what does the mid-cycle update have in store for the CLA Shooting Brake? Nothing too dramatic really, but you’ll have to keep reading to find out more.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake

The CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake will be unveiled in Geneva in 2915, and Mercedes has revealed its preliminary information today.

With an affordable price tag and matching good looks, the 2014 to 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA became a popular item as soon as it hit showrooms. That success has inspired the Germans to expand the CLA lineup to include a beefed-up 2014 CLA45 AMG and a CLA Shooting Brake. With the former already on sale since the 2014 model year, Mercedes is finally rolling out wagon versions — Shooting Brakes, as the company likes to call them — for both four-door coupe models. The CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake breaks cover as we enter the 2015 model year, with its public debut set to take place at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

With the CLA45 AMG already available in U.S. dealerships, the Shooting Brake model is as familiar as it gets, with only the longer roofline and sloping tailgate setting it apart from its sedan sibling. The AMG-badged wagon is both powerful and fast, despite being a massive departure from AMG’s traditional V-8 and V-12 powerplant strategy with its 2.0-liter four-banger. You might as well call it the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake’s baby brother; no one will mind. Read on for the full details.

Updated 08/28/2015: For the 2016 model year, the CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake receives the same output as the facelifted 2015 Mercedes-AMG A45 AMG, meaning that it gets to play with 381 horsepower instead of 360 horsepower, while the 0-62 mph acceleration takes place in 4.3 seconds.

MC Customs Mercedes CLA-0

Miami Based tuner MC Customs has put together a really nice styling kit for the Mercedes CLA 250. The compact German four-door coupe gets a custom body kit complete with a unique grille, plus a set of exclusive Vossen wheels which look as if they were tailored specifically for MC Customs Mercedes CLA.

The styling kit on this car is a thing of beauty in itself. It is way too massive for a car of CLA’s size, but because of that it gives the little car presence and attitude. MC Customs Mercedes CLA styling kit consists of a large carbon fiber front spoiler with extended lips on the sides, a custom grille painted in white to match the exterior color, blacked-out roof, new side skirts, extended boot lid spoiler – also in carbon, and a unique rear diffuser.

Some people may not this kit a bit too juicy, what with the mix of white and carbon accents. Personally, we would have the white rear diffuser finished in carbon for the sake of a more uniform look back there. As mentioned, MC Customs Mercedes CLA also features a set of bespoke Vossen wheel in white, garnished with green brake calipers. The car is based on the CLA 250 which is a fine engine. But really, this kit should be fitted to the more potent CLA 45 AMG.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz Plans AMG Sport Model Growth

With the Stuttgart carmaker recently adding the C450 AMG 4Matic and GLE450 AMG 4Matic Coupe to its “AMG Sport” stable, it seems that an avalanche of similar cars will be launched in the upcoming years, consisting of both smaller and larger Mercedes-Benz models. The information comes from the Aussies at Motoring, who recently had a chat with Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers.

Moers let it slip that a dramatic expansion of the model lineup doesn’t make him afraid of diminishing the AMG brand’s appeal, exclusivity or niche status. “I don’t care about the niche brand, I don’t even care about the exclusive brand,” he told Motoring at the C63 and C450 AMG press event. “AMG is the performance and sports car brand of Mercedes-Benz cars and if you bring cars to the market which are representing the AMG approach and attitude – driving performance – in that segment, then you don’t have a problem with the brand.” Moers continued.

Interestingly, the Mercedes-AMG boss also talked about the C450 AMG’s only direct rival, making it sound like there are no worries in the Affalterbach camp. “If you step into the sport model segment with the C 450 – if it comes to a competitive test with our competitors, a comparison with the Audi S5 or whatever – then our car must be in front.” That said, more AMG Sport models with no direct predecessors are set to appear in both the compact range and the upcoming E-Class.

PostHeaderIcon Video: Mercedes CLA Commercial Brings W196 Racecar Back Into Focus

With global sales on the rise in each and every market, including the U.S., Mercedes-Benz decided to capitalize on this and bring everyone’s attention to their least-expensive offering in the U.S., the CLA four-door coupe. But since December 2014, the CLA250 no longer starts at under $30,000, as its U.S. pricing has gone up, likely thanks to increased demand. But even a little “over” $30,000 still sounds great next to $30 million, right? I’ll buy two!

The new CLA commercial was shot at the Mercedes-Benz proving-ground test track in Untertürkheim, Germany, which is famous for its 90 degree bank. Every driver that has experienced the turn has said that it feels very much like riding the so-called “Wall of death,” and after seeing footage from there I can believe it.

The commercial’s premise is not exactly groundbreaking, since it simply accentuates that the CLA250 is still pretty cheap for a Mercedes-Benz, especially when compared with the W196R that not long ago auctioned for just under $30 million. The humor is lacking a bit, sadly, but the point still stands – the CLA is the cheapest Mercedes-Benz that you can buy in the U.S. For many buyers, that’s probably all that matters.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake Goes Into Production

Not long after Mercedes-Benz introduced the world to the swoopy and affordable CLA, we began hearing whispers of a more practical Shooting Brake version that would soon make its way to dealers. The First CLA began rolling off assembly lines in January of 2013, and now just two years later, Mercedes has officially announced that the Shooting Brake variant of the new CLA is in production at the same Kecskemét plant.

With a full 27,000 units of the standard CLA sold in the U.S. last year, double from 2013, and record sales around the globe, Mercedes is poised for huge growth worldwide and they are hoping that the increased practicality of the Shooting Brake will help push those numbers. Sadly for those of us here in the States we still have no confirmation of the long-roof version will actually make it to our shores.

If you live in Europe, Asia or one Mercedes’ other large markets you can start ordering your CLA Shooting Brake in one of six models ranging from the CLA 180 up to the AMG tuned CLA 45 AMG version. Retail price in Germany is €29,809.50 for the base 180 and go up to €57,268.75 for the AMG model.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition

Mercedes broke its normal prtocol by releasing a special edition of its new CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake called the OrangeArt Edition instead of leading with an Edition 1.

Mercedes has spoiled us with a handful of Edition 1 models in 2013 and 2014, but the German automaker is taking a different approach with the new 2016 CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake. Instead of slapping another “Edition 1” badge on the new sporty wagon, Mercedes has opted to coin this first edition series the OrangeArt Edition.

As its name implies, the OrangeArt Edition comes with a handful of upgrades, particularly the orange accents spread throughout the exterior and interior of the car. The orange accents may have been used more as a complementary color to the dark-grey body of the CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake but the implications are pretty clear. These orange accents are largely responsible for breaking the ashen look of the wagon and bring some vibrancy to its appearance.

In the end, Mercedes’ objective to introduce a limited series for a new model remains the same. The approach is also pretty similar, too. It’s just a matter of getting used to calling this CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake by its proper name. So don’t get it twisted; it’s not an Edition 1 model. It’s the Mercedes CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition.

PostHeaderIcon Filling the Gaps: Mercedes New Naming System Analyzed

Mercedes has already laid out most of its new naming scheme, but we noticed some obvious gaps, so we filled them in and speculated on each model.

Mercedes-Benz is planning some pretty major updates to the entirety of its product line. In a bid to fill every nook and cranny of the luxury auto market with some form of the three-pointed star, the company recently announced its intention to release eleven all-new models over the course of the next five years, which is in addition to ten new plug-in hybrids scheduled for release in the next three years.

To help sort through the glut of new cars, Mercedes has come up with a fresh nomenclature system that will be applied to all upcoming releases going into 2015. This system differentiates between vehicles via one to three upper case letters, which designate the car type (“GL” for SUVs/off-roaders, “CL” for four-door coupes, “SL” for roadsters, etc.) and core model series (A, E, S, etc.), plus lower case letters for the drive system (“d” for diesel, “h” for hybrid, etc.).

With this information in hand, we can breakdown the future model lineup with relative confidence, filling in the gaps as we go.

What new models will we see coming from Mercedes? Read on to find out.
