PostHeaderIcon Watch This Stripped Mercedes Get Pounded by Potholes

Warped Perception, the Discovery Channel and YouTube show known for filming interesting stuff in super slow motion and with high-def cameras, has beaten the last breath of life from a tired Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The goal: to film the suspension as it rebounds from going over cringe-worthy potholes in a neglected urban street.

The video shows the Mercedes’ MacPherson strut going though a full compression cycle multiple times over just a short distance of road while the control arms swing wildly around their rubber bushings. The stripped down Merc clearly isn’t having fun; every little part is reeling from the shocks and making the unibody car do the wave like teens at a concert. Most surprising is the lateral forces seen acting on the wheel and tire as the car turns slightly while mid-bump. In fact, the forces are too much for the dry rotten tires could take. Both the front and rear tires pop and the sidewalls slam into the broken asphalt – and it’s all captured on 4K slow-motion video.

PostHeaderIcon The Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept Is All Set For Its Hollywood Debut

Justice League is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, and a film of this magnitude is going to attract a lot of heavy, cross-brand promotional partnerships. This kind of collaboration is particularly prevalent in the superhero film genre. We’ve seen Audis in the Iron Man movies, and Avengers: Age of Ultron and Acura in the Thor movies, and The Avengers. The massive audiences generated by these movies is the perfect place for publicity and, with Justice League scheduled to hit theaters on November 17, Mercedes-Benz will be prominently featured in the movie, specifically the Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept.

Yep. The same virtual car that the Silver Arrows presented back in 2013 for the Gran Turismo video game is now a movie star. Ok, that’s not entirely true because it’s not actually top-billing the movie., but it will play a prominent role as Bruce Wayne’s very own daily driver because that’s just how Batman rolls. Joining the Vision Gran Turismo Concept in the movie is the E-Class Cabriolet, which will be driven by no less than Diana Prince herself, who we know more popularly as Wonder Woman. The two Mercedes vehicles will play starring roles in the automaker’s partnership with the DC movie blockbuster, but it also won’t be Merc’s only involvement in the promotion of the movie. A series of commercials centered around Justice League will also be shown in the lead-up to the movie’s hyped up release. We literally have a little over a month before Justice League hits theaters all over the world so keep an eye out on all the Mercedes commercials featuring our favorite superhero in the coming weeks. The first one, called “Hard to Resist,” has already aired, and we can see it in all its glory in the video below.

Justice Leage X Mercedes-Benz: Hard to Resist

A brief refresher on the Mercedes-Vision Gran Turismo Concept

The Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept Is All Set For Its Hollywood Debut - image 737298
“The AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept could turn into one of the most famous Hollywood cars of all time, at least depending on how Bruce Wayne uses it.”

It’s been four years since Mercedes-AMG unveiled the Vision Gran Turismo Concept and like fine wine, it’s gotten better with age. Nothing has changed from how it looks, but that’s precisely the point. The AMG Vision Gran Turismo was designed with a timeless look, highlighted by certain elements taken from the 1952 Mercedes 300 SL race car. The concept was also one of the first Mercedes models to feature the dotted front grille that’s become a prominent fixture among the automaker’s current lineup. Beyond its design, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept also showcased an AMG-sourced V-8 biturbo engine that pumps out an output of 585 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The numbers sound pedestrian now given the going-rate in power that most of today’s supercars have, but remember, the concept was designed to weigh just 1,385 kilos or about 3,053 pounds. Do the math, and that converts to one horsepower per 2.4 kilograms. The concept has never reached production status, nor will it ever. It was designed exclusively for the Gran Turismo racing game franchise though it is interesting that it’s ventured into new opportunities outside of the video game world. Who knows, now that it’s starring in Justice League, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept could turn into one of the most famous Hollywood cars of all time, at least depending on how Bruce Wayne uses it.

So superhero movies are magnets for automakers?

“Companies like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Acura are not the only ones to have dipped their toes in tying their brands up with major movie franchises”

Oh, you better believe it. Companies like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Acura are not the only ones to have dipped their toes in tying their brands up with major movie franchises. Chevrolet was a prominent partner in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and if you want to step outside the world of superhero movies, you can point to a number of other film franchises that have benefitted from collaborations like this one.

The biggest example is the Fast and Furious franchise. Dodge vehicles have been prominently used in all eight movies of the franchise while other makes and models have had their turn in the spotlight. That’s how big the F&F franchise has become. Speaking of which, you can also look at all the cars the Transformers franchise has used in all five of its movies.

The Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept Is All Set For Its Hollywood Debut - image 737296
“Joining the Vision Gran Turismo Concept in the movie is the E-Class Cabriolet, which will be driven by no less than Diana Prince herself”

Then there’s the James Bond franchise and Aston Martin’s long-standing ties to it. This example is specifically perfect because the partnership between movie franchise and automaker stretches all the way back to the beginning of the Bond movies. It’s still going strong to this day, as shown by the involvement of the Aston Martin DB11 in the last Bond movie to be released, Spectre.

So does Mercedes-Benz have a future in show business now that one of its most high profile concepts is going to make its film debut in one of the year’s biggest movies? It’s too early to tell, but if the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept does well in the movie, it could be in line to get its own feature-length movie. Ok, that’s not happening but, then again, stranger things have happened in Hollywood.

PostHeaderIcon Brabus Once Again Proves It’s The King Of Mercedes-AMG Tuning

Unless we’re in for a surprise in the next coming days, it looks like the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show will only have one major aftermarket tuning company in attendance. It’s a little bit of a surprise, but then again, the tuner that did show up is Brabus, and we all know its place in the tuning hierarchy. Suffice to say, it’s the go-to tuner for Mercedes-Benz models. This week Brabus showed solidified this with not one, not two, but three different programs for three different Mercedes-AMG models, all of which, mind you, received insane levels of power and performance, among other things.

These are the kinds of things that we can expect from Brabus. As a matter of fact, these are the kinds of things that we’ve already expected out of the tuner. I’ve already detailed my thoughts about the Rocket 900 program for the AMG S 65 Cabrio and the 700 kit for the AMG E 63 S last week. But guess what; Brabus wasn’t done. Rather, it followed those two major reveals with another program, the 900PS, for the AMG G 65 V12. All that and the tuner even had the time to build and develop a concept for smart called the Ultimate E Concept and had one of its sub-brands – Startech – come up with an aero kit for the Land Rover Discovery. Those two aside, the three Mercedes-AMG tuning kits are prime examples of why everyone regards Brabus as one of the best tuners in the game today. It may be far from being the only one, but rest assured, if there’s somebody out there with a Mercedes or a Mercedes-AMG in his garage that’s dying to get some aftermarket tuning love, Brabus should be one of the first, if not the first, tuners he should call.

Continue after the jump to read the full story.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG E63 Brabus 700

Days after introducing the new Brabus Rocket 900 for the AMG S 65 Cabriolet, Brabus is getting into the tuning spirit with yet another aftermarket program, this time for the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S. This new kit doesn’t exactly approach the insane levels of the Rocket 900, but make no mistake, with 691 horsepower on tap, don’t think that this AMG E 63 S can’t leave other cars in the dust.

Even better, the German tuner’s program is available for all variants of the AMG E 63. That means that owners of sedan and wagon variants of the AMG E 63 can avail of the Brabus 700 kit, and should they do so, they stand to receive more than just a plug-and-play auxiliary control unit. The whole program also features an aerodynamic kit, a new set of wheels, and enough personalization options for the interior that helps bring out a unique identity to each and every customer who gets the kit. It is fitting that Brabus is presenting the 700 program for the AMG E 63 S at the Frankfurt Motor Show, considered as one of the biggest auto shows in the world. A lot of eyes will be on the tuner to showcase its latest wares. Hardly a surprise then that Brabus is bringing its A-game to the event.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG E63 S By Posaidon

There may be a new-generation Mercedes-AMG E63 S in town now, but just because that’s the case, that doesn’t mean the previous-generation model will just fade out into the sunset. Noted Mercedes tuner Posaidon seems to think that there’s still some untapped potential left in the “old” AMG E63 S, and like any tuner worth its salt, Posaidon set about unlocking it with a new program that delivers a staggering 1,090 horsepower, more than what today’s lineup of hypercars are capable of.

Wrap your heads around that number for a second. 1,090 horsepower for the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. Sure, the mid-sized performance saloon is capable of handling that much power, but not without a lot of help, or at least in this case, a bigger engine up front. That’s the scope of what Posaidon has done. Not to mention the work Posaidon put in, which speaks to the kind of upgrades it’s offering for the Merc-AMG. It’s admittedly not for everyone, but for those who prefer supercar-levels of power out of the E63 S beauties, the German tuner’s power offering is about as high as it’s going to get. And in case it’s a little too out of reach for a customer’s sensibilities, Posaidon does have other options on the menu, specifically upgrades that “only” bring out 850 and 920 horsepower, respectively. I suppose the output numbers, in this case, are relative, but then again, even an 850-horsepower AMG E63 S is going to be a whirlwind to drive.

Mercedes-Benz are not really known for their eccentricity, but every one in a while they let their engineers roam free and come up with some truly amazing stuff. This Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² is one such thing, built a maverick engineers in his free time.

Now, before you get too excited we should point out the wonderfully insane Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² is a one-off, fun project with, at the moment, zero chance of production. That said, there are some words in the dark corners of the auto blogsphere suggesting the company’s top brass are actually considered making this car in extremely small numbers. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

As for what inspired the creation of Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² besides its engineer love of odd things, the main influence has clearly been the G500 4×4², a limited-run SUV whose axles they have borrowed for the All-Terrain E. The rest of the car is an E400 All-Terrain, garnished with some stickers and extra large fender flares. Calling this thing an All-terrain is a bit of a misnomer seeing as the whole point of all-terrain cars is that they are not as tall and high-riding as SUVs. This one, though, is high as a Hummer. That quality – being high – is what we reckon the E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² shares with its creator!

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes Reveals New E-Class Cab With Bigger Dimensions And Jet-Like Taillights

Mercedes-Benz just revealed its new E-Class Cabriolet ahead of an official world debut in Switzerland, completing the line with a little blue-sky opulence. The updated soft-top grows substantially on the outside, while packing all the usual goodies in the interior and rocking boosted six-cylinder motivation under the hood.

First and foremost, the updated E-Class Cab is larger than before, with a full 5 inches added to the overall length, 4.4 inches added to the wheelbase, almost 3 inches added to the width, and an extra 1.4 inches in height.

The fabric top offers the same profile as the E-Class coupe when raised, and can be had in dark brown, dark blue, red, or black. Opening and closing it takes just 20 seconds, and it can be operated while traveling at speeds up to 30 mph.

LEDs are equipped in the headlights and taillights. By the way, Mercedes says the taillights “exude a glow reminiscent of that given off by a jet engine,” which is hilarious. What’s more, if you get the optional LED Intelligent Light System, you’ll get “a special light show” whenever you walk away or towards the car.

Inside, there’s unlimited-headroom luxury seating for up to four passengers. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, while wireless phone charging is optional. The Aircap and Airscarf systems are also offered to help keep you comfortable and warm when traveling in colder climates with the top down.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument display is optional, while a 12.3-inch infotainment screen is standard. Vehicle features are operated through either the multi-function steering wheel, handwriting touchpad, or voice control.

Leather upholstery is available in one of four individual colors. You can also get Nappa leather in one of three different colors, plus there are seven individual trim options.

Making the go is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, which is mated to a standard nine-speed automatic transmission. RWD is standard, while 4Matic AWD is available for the first time.

The suspension was lowered 0.6 inches compared to the hard-top sedan, and can be had with adjustable damping and an available multi-chamber air set-up. Standard spec includes 18-inch wheels.

Debuting alongside the regular E-Class Cabriolet is a 25th Anniversary special edition model, which gets 19-inch wheels, the Cabriolet Comfort package, upgraded wood trim, and more.

Look for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet in the metal at the Geneva International Motor Show next week. U.S. dealers are expected to get it before the end of the year. Exact pricing will be announced closer to launch.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz Teases E-Class Cabrio; Confirms New AMG Concept For Geneva

Mercedes-Benz has just announced its lineup for the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, which will bring two brand-new vehicles into the spotlight. First on the list is the E-Class Cabriolet, of which Mercedes release a teaser photo alongside other members of the nameplate, including the sedan, coupe, wagon, and the All-Terrain. Unlike its predecessor, which was derived from the C-Class, the new E-Class Cabriolet was developed on its own and shares underpinnings with its midsize coupe sibling.

The second global debut is an AMG concept car. The brand refrained from revealing actual details, but did say that the show car is part of AMG’s 50th anniversary and described it as “stunning” and a “glimpse of an alternative drive concept.” Most likely we will see a futuristic, autonomous vehicle.

The Mercedes-Benz booth in Geneva will include another 32 models. The display will include the updated GLA crossover, which will make its European debut, and the new Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet. The German company will also showcase the Concept X-Class pickup truck, the Smart ForTwo Cabrio Brabus Edition #2, and the ForFour Crosstown Edition.

Finally, visitors will also have a closer look at recently unveiled cars like the AMG E 63 S Wagon, AMG GT C Roadster Edition 50, AMG C 63 S Cabriolet Ocean Blue Edition, and AMG Performance Studio Package-equipped C43 Coupe, known as the Night Edition in Europe.

Stay tuned for updates and photos of these cars from the Geneva Motor Show next month.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Wagon

Practicality, comfort, and speed. It’s a difficult combination to achieve, especially in the U.S., where customers are usually only offered two of these characteristics, but not the third. Compounding the problem is the fact that on these shores, practicality is almost always equated with a crossover or SUV body style, which is obviously less than ideal when it comes to performance duties. Mercifully, Mercedes-AMG has a whopper of a solution. It’s called the E 63 S Wagon, and it’s based off the four-door rocket sedan of the same name. Merc first introduced the E-Class in 1993, with the latest fifth-gen model ushered in for the 2017 model year, and incredibly, the brand has decided to continue to offer the E-Class Wagon in the U.S. Even more amazing is the fact that stateside high-speed thrill seekers can get their fix with the E 63 S Wagon iteration, which gets all the opulence, interior tech, exterior style, and over-powered performance as the E 63 S sedan, but with extra space in the hatch to boot.

But let’s just jump right into the specs that matter most, shall we? Under the hood of the AMG E 63 S Wagon is a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 gas burner, pumping out an astonishing 603 horsepower. Routing output to the ground is a nine-speed automatic transmission. It’s enough muscle to push this wagon to 60 mph in as little as 3.4 seconds, while the upgraded performance suspension system keeps it all in control. Step inside, and you get a familiar look and layout, infotainment system, and the usual premium features.

Sounds amazing, if you ask us. But the wagon body style can still be a tough sell in the U.S., even with just over 600 ponies on tap, which begs the question – what’s this thing really bring to the table?

PostHeaderIcon 2018 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Wagon Unveiled Because Fast Wagons Are Just Better

Yesterday, I announced the reveal of the BMW 5 Series Touring, lamenting how us ‘Mericans would probably get left out in the cold when it came to handsome, fun-to-drive wagon models. Apparently, Mercedes-AMG was listening, because today it announced the arrival of an outrageous, high-powered AMG-variant of the E-Class five-door. It’s called the E 63 S, taking after the Mercedes four-door of the same name, and it’s got the goods to go with the title. Because when it comes to grabbing a week’s worth of groceries and picking the kids up from soccer practice, more than 600 horsepower just feels right.

Of course, you could use this thing for more than shuttling around the progeny and their juice boxes. After all, it’s got 35 cubic feet of space in back for, well, whatever, plus the second row can be folded down at a 40:20:40 split as you see fit.

So it’s versatile, that much is obvious. Now let’s talk about why it’s fast.

Under the hood is an AMG-tuned 4.0-liter V-8, which is boosted by two twin-scroll turbos for a rip-snortin’ 603 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 627 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. Fed through an AMG-tuned nine-speed automatic gearbox and permanent 4Matic+ AWD system (with drift mode, by the way), it’s enough motivation to send this thing to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited at 180 mph.

And it’s not just a one-trick pony, either. Making it turn is a new AMG air suspension system with tunable adaptive damping, an electronic rear limited-slip differential, AMG speed-sensitive steering, and 15-inch high-performance brakes. Ceramic composite brakes are optional, because of course.

Inside are the usual AMG bits and pieces, with a flat-bottom steering wheel, carbon fiber trim, and two performance-oriented digital gauge readouts, each measured at 12.3 inches in diameter. There are optional performance seats, while Nappa leather was added to the dash and beltlines.

Look for the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Wagon this March at the Geneva Motor Show. Sales will commence this fall. In the U.S.

PostHeaderIcon Taking On Ze Germans… In A Camry?!

You know, you can buy a lot of car for not a whole lotta money these days. For example, if it’s straight-line muscle you’re looking for, the Dodge Charger Hellcat and Dodge Challenger Hellcat will put over 700 horsepower at your disposal for a mere $65,000. That’s pretty insane if you ask us, but what about something on the either side of the spectrum, where comfort and style rule supreme? Well, around these parts, you could opt for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the German’s mid-size luxury four-door that comes jam-packed with high-tech goodies, top-shelf opulence, and upper-crust flair. Or, as an alternative, consider the new eighth-generation Toyota Camry. No, seriously.

Suffice to say, we’re big fans of the new Camry. So much so, we feel comfortable comparing it to one of Merc’s best luxury barges. The updated Toyota just dropped cover at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and we’re convinced it’s got the goods to punch way above its weight.

But maybe we’re overstepping things a bit. Maybe we’re completely off in the deep end. Maybe. It’s certainly a possibility. But after the response we got when we compared the Camry and the BMW 5 Series, we shrugged our shoulders and went for it anyway.

Continue reading for the full comparison.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes E-Class Coupe Edition 1

Edition 1 models have become a tradition for Mercedes-Benz in recent years, so much so that when a new model bearing the Silver Arrows badge makes its debut, it won’t be long before an Edition 1 version is called into action. We’ve seen it a handful of times in recent years with the likes of the S-Class Edition 1, GLA-Class Edition 1, and CLA-Class Edition 1. Even AMG models like the AMG S63 and the AMG C63 Coupe have received Edition 1 treatments in the past. All of this is worth mentioning because Mercedes just unveiled the new E-Class Coupe, and like clockwork, that was soon followed by the debut of the E-Class Coupe Edition 1.

Like most versions of the Edition 1 kind, the E-Class Coupe Edition 1 comes bearing plenty of exclusive features that you won’t see as standard features on regular E-Class Coupe models. Likewise, it also gets packages from Mercedes’ own pantry of accessories and add-ons, also as standard features. The upgrades are mostly of cosmetic nature, similar to past Edition 1 models.

Speaking of similarities, quantity is also another shared characteristics of these models. Like its predecessors before it, the E-Class Coupe Edition 1 is reportedly limited to just 555 units, as per German blog Mercedes-Benz Passion. That’s actually a healthy total considering that past Edition 1 models came in lesser numbers.

Mercedes has made no mention on how much the E-Class Coupe Edition is going to cost. That’s not a surprise considering that even the new E-Class has no price yet either. That said, the current model retails anywhere from $54,000 to just north of $60,000 so expect the E-Class Edition 1 to fetch somewhere close to the $60,000 neighborhood.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Recently unveiled for the 2017 model year, the fifth-generation, W213 E-Class is only at the beginning of its long adventure on the luxury market, but already creating big waves thanks to its stylish design, ultra-premium interior, and state-of-the-art technology. With the four-door and the wagon in dealerships as of late 2016, Mercedes-Benz is planning a full assault on the market in 2017 with both AMG-prepped and a coupe version. The highly anticipated two-door made its debut in December 2016 ahead of its public outing at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2017.

The fifth-generation model comes to replace the C207 E-Class, which was being sold since 2009. Launched with a couple of years before the current BMW 7 Series, the C207 wasn’t doing particularly well on the market and a replacement was needed much sooner. However, a quick glance at the new E-Class Coupe and I can see why Mercedes-Benz took so long to redesign this car. Not only does it look far more modern, it also comes with state-of-the-art technology that no other Merc has received as of 2016, not even the range-topping S-Class.

“With its clear, aesthetic lines, our new E‑Class Coupe appeals equally to heart and mind. It condenses contemporary luxury, agile sportiness and high-tech engineering into an automotive personality with esprit, offering exclusive, refined driving pleasure,” said Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler AG.

Is the new E-Class Coupe as good as Mercedes-Benz describes it? Find out in my comprehensive review below.

Updated 12/14/2016: Mercedes dropped the official details on the new E-Class Coupe.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe: This Is It!

Spotted testing on public roads in prototype form since December 2015, the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe has just made its unofficial debut thanks to brochure that surfaced the Interwebz via a Belgian website. Featuring a handful of photos and some information in German, the brochure confirms that the upcoming coupe is a shorter, sleeker version of the new-generation E-Class sedan that was unveiled earlier in 2016.

As expected, the coupe is essentially identical to the sedan up front. It features the same styling language inspired by the larger S-Class with sporty bumper intakes, slightly swept back headlamps, but massive trapezoidal grille. The picture shows a model that has the company’s diamond grille, which has become the norm on most models, but the automaker will probably also offer the more familiar element with two horizontal slats running into the three-pointed star emblem.

Around back, the E-Class Coupe is yet again very similar to the two-door versions of the C-Class and S-Class. The sloping trunk lid is complemented by a subtle spoiler, long and flat taillights that extend well into the rear fenders, and a sporty bumper with large exhaust outlets at each corner. When viewed from the sides, the E-Class Coupe showcases the sedan’s character lines below the glass house and above the side skirts, as well as a different quarter window. Of course, due to the new roofline and shorter wheelbase, it’s sportier and more stylish than the four-door.

Not surprisingly, the interior is also identical to that of the sedan. The cabin was designed around the S-Class, which introduced a new gorgeous and elegant interior design back in 2013. Look for the same massive displays in the instrument cluster and above the center stack, wood veneer, tons of leather, smooth plastics, and tremendous fit and finish. Naturally, the coupe is a bit different behind the front seats, where passengers won’t have the comfort of proper rear doors or the same amount of headroom as in the sedan. However, shoulder room and legroom should remain largely unchanged given the platform’s excellent versatility and Mercedes’ excellent packaging seen in smaller cars.

The brochure says there will be an E400 4Matic model. Equipped with four-wheel-drive, this version will use a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 333 PS and 480 Nm of torque (328 horsepower and 350 pound-feet), which should translate into a 0-to-60 mph sprint of around 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Other drivetrains will be offered too. Maybe it won’t get as many as the sedan, but expect an E250 version with 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 211 PS and 350 Nm (208 horsepower and 260 pound-feet) and a E350d with a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel with 258 PS and 620 Nm (254 horsepower and 460 pound-feet). Naturally, Mercedes-Benz will also launch AMG E63 and AMG E43 variants sometime in 2017.

Speaking of debuts, the E-Class Coupe will be launched officially on December 14 and will make its public appearance at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show in January.

PostHeaderIcon Chinese firm BAIC to revive old Mercedes platform for new vehicles

Chinese company BAIC Motor Group will recycle an old Mercedes-Benz platform to develop new cars. According to a media report, BAIC received approval from partner Daimler to use a previous E-Class architecture for a brand-new car, which is said to hit the domestic market in 2018 as a midsize sedan. BAIC will also launch SUV and MPV models using the same platform.

There’s no word as to which E-Class platform BAIC is planning to use, but the upcoming vehicles are likely to use parts from the W212 architecture, which was recently discontinued to make way for the new, W213-generation E-Class. On the other hand, Automotive News says, citing Beijing-based website Internet Info Agency, that the upcoming sedan and SUV will be sold under BAIC’s Senova brand, while the MPV will get a Weiwang badge. The former is a brand that BAIC launched in 2012, while the latter is a subsidiary that builds vans.

The report also adds that BAIC is also borrowing two gasoline engines and a transmission from Mercedes-Benz. Units will include a turbocharged, 1.8-liter four-pot and a naturally aspirated, 3.0-liter V-6, while the gearbox will be a six-speed automatic. Both engines were offered with the previous-generation E-Class.

Established in 1958, BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding) is a state-owned company that operates passenger vehicle and truck joint-ventures with Daimler. It is among the most-productive Chinese automakers, making more than two million vehicles per year. The group includes BAIC Motor (passenger cars and vans), BAW (light off-road vehicles, trucks, and military vehicles), and Foton Motor (trucks, buses, and agricultural machinery). It has joint-ventures with both Daimler and Hyundai.

PostHeaderIcon TopSpeed's Top 5 Premium Wagons – 2017 Edition

At this point, it should be more than obvious that if you want a car with utility and space for at least five people, but don’t wanna join the crowd of crossovers you see crammed onto the roads, your best option is to get your hands on a wagon. Once a steadfast bastion of the practical, wagons have seen a sharp decline in popularity over the last few decades, the result of an all-out assault from the tall-bodied insanity of the current SUV craze. But fear not – the wagon hasn’t gone gently into that good night, at least not yet, and we’ve assembled five top-shelf options right here for your perusal and approval.

Rather than limiting ourselves to what’s currently available, we decided to look ahead in anticipation of what’ll be in dealers in the next year or so, including both existing offerings and those that have yet to be released. As it turns out, there are a few very strong entries barreling down the pipeline right now, which means buyers will have a nice selection of premium wagons when shopping in 2017.

So what’s topping the menu? Read on to find out.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain

The fifth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class, also known as the W213, was unveiled at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show and went on sale for the 2017 model year. A significant departure from its predecessor, it uses a brand-new architecture and styling language based off the S-Class full-size sedan. More comfortable and efficient than ever before, the new E-Class also debuted a handful of new Mercedes-Benz technologies, including a semi-autonomous system. The sedan was followed by a beefed-up AMG version and a wagon variant with two-door coupe and cabriolet models also set to follow. But unlike its predecessor, the W213 also spawned crossover-like model. It goes by the name E-Class All-Terrain and it is aimed at the likes of the Audi A6 Allroad.

When Mercedes-Benz called 2016 “the year of the SUV” and announced a further expansion of its already large collection of SUVs and crossovers by 2020, most people expected more niche models like the GLC Coupe or the Mercedes-Maybach GLS. As it turns out, Mercedes-Benz was considering competitors for the Audi A4 and A6 Allroad as well. The news initially came straight from Mercedes-Benz vice president of sales and product managements, Matthias Luehrs, who said that the company is essentially “looking at everything.” What was just a possibility in 2015 became certainty in 2016, when Mercedes-Benz unveiled its Audi A6 Allroad fighter ahead of the Paris Motor Show.

Dubbed E-Class All-Terrain, the new vehicle follows in the footsteps of Audi’s midsize Allroad model, blending the styling of the utilitarian, yet still sexy E-Class wagon with the taller ride height and cladding of a crossover. Described as a “flexible all‑rounder for unpaved roads, family and leisure time,” the All-Terrain gives the German brand access to a previously unexplored niche and likely opens the door for a similar model based on the C-Class too. But until that happens, let’s have a closer look at the brand-new E-Class All-Terrain.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes AMG E63 Black Series

It’s been two months since we got the last round of spy shots of the E63 wagon tearing loose on the Nürburgring. If you glance at the image above, you might think we just got some more shots of the E63 Wagon, but that’s not that case at all. What you’re actually looking at is what we believe to be the Mercedes-AMG E63 Black Series in wagon form. Considering it’s been a few years since we’ve seen an official Black Series model, this is exciting news, to say the least.

While all official details are still kept deep within the Mercedes-AMG vault of non-disclosure, if this thing really is a Black Series model, we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Things like an aggressive body kit, enhanced brake system, performance suspension, and lots of other goodies will surely show themselves by the time prototype testing is done. But, until then, let’s take a look at these spy shots and talk about what we can make out and what might be coming to dealers in the near future.

Updated 08/18/2016: Our spy photographers caught the upcoming Mercedes-AMG E63 AMG out for a new testing session, this time close to its test center at the Nürburgring.
