There is no shortage of car models in the auto industry these days. Some models have gained followings while others have become flashes in the pan. Then there are the titans of the business, the models that have lasted the test of time and have been around, literally, for generations. In the course of their respective lifetimes, these models have evolved in more ways than one, none more evident than their designs. Knowing their place in the business, these models are unlikely to go away anytime soon.

PostHeaderIcon If You Want a Mercedes-AMG SL65, You Better Act Fast Because Its Death Warrant Has Been Signed

Is the Mercedes-AMG SL 65 not long for this world? That appears to be the case after a report from MB Passion Blog revealed that the SL 65 is going to be retired in June of this year. It’s known that production of the V-12 luxo-performance machine will end in May, but the fate of the drop-top is now in question beyond that.

PostHeaderIcon Toyo Tires and Ac Milan Release their Fourth Collaboration Video, and It’s Amazing

If you haven’t seen the first three videos put together in collaboration between Ac Milan and Toyo Tires, you’ve seriously missed out. We’ve added those down below so you can catch up, but before you do we need to tell you about the fourth collaboration titled: “Ac Milan in Japanimation.” It’s a completely different animal compared to the previous videos, this time staring four key players from not only AC Milan but Gamba Osaka as well. It was filmed in Japan and Italy, but that’s not the best part. The best part is that Toyo commissioned none other than Yoichi Takahashi, the creator of the very popular and long-running manga series, Captain Tsubasa.

As such, this video is a unique mix of reality and animation in the best way, with AC Milan players, Riccardo Montolivo, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, André Silva, Ricardo Rodríguez taking on Gamba Osaka players, Yasuhito Endo, Yasuyuki Konno, Shu Kurata, Hiroki Fujiharu.
What starts out as a scene with Montolivo reading a manga, quickly turns into a showdown not only between the two teams but a Mercedes G63 (represented by AC Milan) and a Mercedes SL400 that’s represented by Gamba Osaka. While the players in natural and animation form battle it back and forth with a ball, the two Mercedes’, which are riding upon Toyo Proxes tires, take to the street in an awesome, mostly animated drift battle.

If you’re in for a bit of entertainment, check out the video below. You’ll be sure you did. If you haven’t see the videos that came before, we’ve added those down below too.

4th Installment: AC Milan in Japanimation

3rd Installment: AC Milan vs. Drift Cars

2nd Installment: Chase in Milan

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG SL 65 by Vath

The Mercedes-AMG SL 65 is a peculiar car for aftermarket tuners. Like the BMW M6, the AMG SL 65 isn’t small enough to provide room for enormous tuning potential, but it’s also not up-market enough to not need one in the first place. That’s likely one of the reasons why there aren’t that many tuners who work on the AMG SL 65. Not that it’s the tuner’s fault because if there’s not enough there to work on, why even bother in the first place? Fortunately, a tuner like Vath doesn’t preoccupy itself with asking these types of questions. it just goes ahead and does it. And that’s exactly what we have here with this new tuning program for the AMG SL 65 that gives the performance convertible a higher output of 672 horsepower and 847 pound-feet of torque.

The power figures are nice, but the real treats of this particular tuning program from Vath are the complementary upgrades on the convertible. After all, it’s not enough to have an engine upgrade without working on other sections of the AMG SL 65 that are directly affected by the improved power and performance. Go to the tuner’s website you’ll see a comprehensive tuning kit that also includes upgrades to the car’s exterior, interior, suspension, and wheels.

In a lot of ways, this is what you can expect from a tuner like Vath, which specializes on developing programs for Mercedes models. A quick look at its portfolio reveals that the German tuner has kits available for a handful of Mercedes models like the CLA-Class, E-Class, and S-Class to go with their AMG counterparts.

There’s a lot to get through with Vath’s new program for the AMG SL 65 and for what it’s worth, the upgrades are what you expect to get from a shop like this. That’s what happens when you have a company that has literally spent years of its existence fine-tuning its abilities in creating programs for models that can be filed under Mercedes.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes 300SL Gullwing (W194)

There is no technical definition for what makes a car a supercar, and as such, there will always be some disagreement about what car should be considered the first to have reached this status. There is no shortage of possible contenders, but the biggest debate is between the Lamborghini Miura and this, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL.

The 300SL was derived from a race car by the same name, which is noteworthy because it is usually the other way around, with race cars being built out of existing road-going models. It’s usually too difficult to go in the other direction, especially when you’re talking about a car that had overall wins at Le Mans, the Nurburgring and the Carrera Panamericana. But, in the ’50s, road cars and track cars weren’t so divorced from one another that it was impossible.

The idea for a Grand Prix car that was repurposed for road use was pitched to Mercedes by the Austrian-born, but New York-based importer and car dealer Max Hoffman, who would also go on to suggest several successful cars to Porsche. Because of this, the car debuted at the New York Auto Show, a first for a Mercedes product, and was instantly the hit of the show.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes Benz SL-Class

The SL-Class is one of the most iconic namplates in Mercedes’ storied history, as it dates all the way back to the legendary 300SL that ebuted in 1954. The second, third, and fourth generations debuted in 1963, 1972, and 1989, respectively, and all brought significant changes.

The fifth-gen SL launched in 2003, and Mercedes gave it a significant facelift in 2008. Finally in 2012, the sixth-generation SL debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, but it quickly became evident that it needed work to help separate it from the smaller SLK. This leads us to the revised version of the SL that has launched at the 2015 LA Auto Show, in preparation for the the 2016 model year in the U.S.

The new SL sports highly revised front and rear fascias with new headlights, taillights, and an all-new hood. The top is also reworked, allowing the power-folding hardtop to open and close at speed up to 40 kph, or 25 mph. The interior also sees some improvements, though not as drastic as the exterior. Fit and finish are said to be improved and the steering wheel has been updated.

The SL model range is getting revisions itself. The entry-level model has moved from the SL400 to the SL450, thanks to a revised V-6 engine with more power. The V-8 engine carries over from last year, keeping its SL550 designation. The same is true for the two AMG variants, the V-8-powered SL63 and the V-12-powerd SL65.

So let’s take a look at the refreshed SL-Class.

Updated 11/18/2015: Mercedes unveiled the 2017 SL-Class at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz SL Facelift Spied Inside And Out: Spy Shots

It’s been a few months since our spy photographers caught the updated 2016 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class out testing, but it doesn’t appear that it has lost much of its camouflage. The big news is that we get our best look yet at the interior.

The single shot shows that the interior will be getting minimal upgrades similar to most of the exterior. Standing out the most is the redesigned steering wheel, which appears to have a smaller diameter with a more prominent flat bottom. Other changes include slightly reworked infotainment system controls on the center stack and a display screen that looks like it may have gotten better graphics. Surprisingly, there is still no Start button to fire up the engine and the driver must continue to use an ignition key.

There is still a lot of camouflage covering the front of the car, so we actually can’t see anything new. The new roadster will definitely get a more aggressive face, possibly similar to the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT, and from certain angles, it seems that the changes have resulted in an even longer front overhang – but that could just be added camo. Looking at the rear of the SL, it will have reworked taillights with new LED elements and the exhaust outlets integrated into the rear fascia will get more rounded shapes.

PostHeaderIcon Petrolicious Pays Tribute To Mercedes-Benz 280 SL "Pagoda:" Video

The second-generation W113 1963 Mercedes-Benz SL has always been somewhat overshadowed by its more collectable W198 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “gullwing” predecessor. Most of that comes down to rarity, but — and I might catch some heat for saying this — I think the W113 is the prettier car. Take this 280 SL ‘Pagoda’ owned by Daniel Monti of Los Angeles. He might be a bit biased, but I think Monti would agree with me. And as an architect, he’s someone who knows a few things about design. Our friends at Petrolicious recently spoke with Monti about his SL and his love of timeless design in cars and architecture.

The 1969 280 SL ‘Pagoda’ earned its nickname because of its unique, concave roof that resembles a Japanese pagoda when view from straight on. But its shape was dictated by functional requirements. “One of the things I read in the design brief,” Monti told Petrolicious, “they wanted to make sure that the journalists who’d came out to a race day, parked their 280SL at the side of the track, climb on top of the roof, get their camera out, and take pictures of the race that day.” Evidently, journalists made a lot more money in the late ’60s.

The 280 SL was the last of three W113s and came after the 230 SL and 250 SL. It was built during a time when Mercedes would determine a car’s price point only after designing and building it — the opposite of what every other car manufacturer does to this day (including Mercedes). It resulted in some stoutly engineered automobiles. Monti’s SL has been in his family for 30 years, and he says it still fires up and drives reliably whenever he takes it out.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes SL Facelift Reveals Its Interior: Spy Shots

The sixth generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL has had a pretty tough launch. Its exterior design has received a good deal of criticism, mainly for not living up to its predecessors’ standards. That will soon change though, as Mercedes-Benz is currently testing the facelifted version in different places around the world.

A pre-production prototype of the facelifted SL was recently spotted exiting a Mercedes-Benz testing facility in Germany, and on this occasion spy photographers caught a glimpse of its camouflaged dashboard for the first time. A slightly larger display is expected to find its way onto the center console, while a new steering wheel similar to the one from the S-Class Coupe should replace the current one.

Set to be unveiled either at the end of 2015 or in early 2016, the refreshed SL Roadster will feature a resculpted snout, which will resurrect the classic inverted grille sported by the original 300 SL race car, and more recently by the Mercedes-AMG GT3 – and a pair of headlights inspired by the ones on the Mercedes-AMG GT. The rear end will remain largely the same, but its design should blend more nicely with the new front end, especially compared to the current model. Redesigned bumpers front and rear and new alloy wheels should complete the exterior package. There is no word on engines, but a version of the twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V-8 found in the C63 and Mercedes-AMG GT may replace the 5.5-liter from the current SL63 AMG.

Check out some of our findings and some rumors on the upcoming SL-Class after the jump.

Updated 11/13/2015: The first official images of the new Mercedes SL-Class surfaced online, meaning that an official debut should happen anytime now. Stay tuned for the official details!

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz SL 417 Mille Miglia Edition

Launched in 2012, the sixth generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL is nearing a mid-cycle facelift, which will hopefully correct some of its not-overly elegant styling and bring it more in line with the current Mercedes-Benz design language. Until then, the Stuttgart carmaker decided to celebrate the 60th anniversary of a major motorsport success with a limited-edition version of its largest roadster. Back at the 1955 “Mille Miglia” endurance race, a stock 300 SL with race number 417 managed to come first in the production sports car class and fifth in the overall standings, leaving a number of racing prototypes behind.

Celebrating both the race triumph and that specific 300 SL, the new Mercedes-Benz SL “Mille Miglia 417” special edition will be launched at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, with both the SL400 and the SL500 (550 in the U.S.) getting the package as an option — for a premium, naturally. Ordering is said to commence from 7th April, 2015, with the SL63 and SL65 AMG being oddly skipped from the program.

PostHeaderIcon Filling the Gaps: Mercedes New Naming System Analyzed

Mercedes has already laid out most of its new naming scheme, but we noticed some obvious gaps, so we filled them in and speculated on each model.

Mercedes-Benz is planning some pretty major updates to the entirety of its product line. In a bid to fill every nook and cranny of the luxury auto market with some form of the three-pointed star, the company recently announced its intention to release eleven all-new models over the course of the next five years, which is in addition to ten new plug-in hybrids scheduled for release in the next three years.

To help sort through the glut of new cars, Mercedes has come up with a fresh nomenclature system that will be applied to all upcoming releases going into 2015. This system differentiates between vehicles via one to three upper case letters, which designate the car type (“GL” for SUVs/off-roaders, “CL” for four-door coupes, “SL” for roadsters, etc.) and core model series (A, E, S, etc.), plus lower case letters for the drive system (“d” for diesel, “h” for hybrid, etc.).

With this information in hand, we can breakdown the future model lineup with relative confidence, filling in the gaps as we go.

What new models will we see coming from Mercedes? Read on to find out.
