PostHeaderIcon Mitsubishi is Bringing Three Concepts to the Tokyo Auto Salon, All of Which Lack Certain Necessities

The Tokyo Auto Salon is nearing its arrival and Mitsubishi is prepared to tackle the show with not one, not two, but three concepts. The first one is based on the Delica D:5 and offers up a take on what an off-road-oriented model could look like. The other two concepts are based on the Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross, and both go by the name “Street Sport.” Information is still rather thin at this point, but here’s what we know so far.

PostHeaderIcon Mitsubish May Finally Update the Shogun, aka Pajero After 20 Years of the Same

A wise man once said that SUVs don’t need upgrades and facelifts regularly as these beasts age gracefully. I think that man worked at Mitsubishi because, at a time when companies update their monsters every 3-4 years, the Japanese automaker is continuing with same old design on their Shogun that, essentially, dates back to last century. However, Mitsubishi has announced that the SUV could finally get a makeover.

PostHeaderIcon Mitsubishi to Showcase New Outlander PHEV in Geneva with Better Tech, Revised Looks

The revised 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is set to make its debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, and It’s about time. The SUV has been Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle since 2015, an achievement it earned after selling more than 100,000 units in the continent in the last three years. Globally, over 140,000 units of the Outlander PHEV have been sold since the model arrived back in 2013.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV offers a lot of updates and potential, including Mitsubishi’s promise of increasing battery capacity by 15 percent and battery output by 10 percent. Likewise, the electric motor’s output will also net a 10-percent improvement, all without sacrificing range. Even the SUV’s ICE unit is getting an improvement in the form of a 2.4-liter four-cylinder Atkinson engine. According to Mitsubishi, the new engine will provide higher torque and improved efficiency. Two new driving modes — SPORT and SNOW — are also on the table.

On the side of aesthetics, the Outlander PHEV is also getting a number of new and improved components. A more significant front grille is on the menu, as is a large rear spoiler, and a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, Mitsubishi’s going premium with the addition of quilted leather, hip-hugging seats, a new instrument panel, and a revised switchgear.

As far as improvements go, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has enough to warrant some love in Geneva. More importantly, these improvements should help the SUV retain its title as the best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV in the market. The full details of the Outlander PHEV will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, including its price tag. For now, take comfort knowing that the price of the new Outlander PHEV shouldn’t be too far away from the outgoing to model, which sells from £34,805, or around $48,700 based on current exchange rates.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited-0

Mitsubishi revealed today their 2017 Chicago Auto Show repetitive, and it’s an Outlander equipped with a new equipment package. The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited edition is designed to give affordable SUV buyers more striking looks and a more decent list of features.

Sitting above the ES model in the range, the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition features on the exterior alloy fuel door, black painted door mirrors and 18″ alloy wheels, fog lamps, HID headlamps, a rear view camera and a Limited Edition badge. Inside the cabin, the main highlights include custom design with black fabric and red stitching on the steering wheel, shift knob and brake lever exclusive to the LE trim, aluminum pedals, heated front seats and a display audio system with Smartphone Link for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Granted, some of those features are pretty superficial (like the fuel filler cap), but given the amount of kit you get, and also the cool looks of the car, and taking into account that it only costs $21,995, one has to conclude that the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition is a fine product and excellent value for money.

“As the brand sales leader, Outlander Sport does an exemplary job of offering consumers unmatched value at an attractive price,” said Don Swearingen, executive vice president and chief operating officer, MMNA. “We’ve now taken that approach one step further by integrating additional standard equipment and technology into the Limited Edition at a price point that is unprecedented within the broader CUV segment.”

Mitsubishi is struggling to keep up with demands presented by the masses, effectively letting certain once-successful models like the Lancer go untouched for years only to be discontinued like the EVO program that once made Mitsubishi a favorite rally brand. Now, as the Lancer makes its way to the guillotine, the brand shifts its focus to crossovers and SUVs in an attempt to stay relevant in an ever-changing world. We know there’s a new crossover planned to debut in Geneva later this year (for the love of all that is holy, we really hope that don’t call that model “Eclipse”) but that leaves Mitsubishi with nothing special for its time at the Chicago Auto Show. Until now, that is, as the brand has just announced that it will debut a limited-edition variant of the Outlander Sport that is said to bring “striking style and technology enhancements at an affordable price.” In other words, it’ll get a new set of wheels and a few other minor things outside, to go with some unique interior work and smartphone integration.

The thing is, the current Outlander Sport (known as the RVR is some markets) has been around since 2010 and has only received a very mild facelift over the last seven years. It’s about time for Mitsubishi to push the Outlander through another generational shift, but it’s hoping this limited-edition model will maintain customer interest through the end of the year. Whether it will be successful in doing so is a completely different story, but let’s take a quick look at it to see what it offers.

PostHeaderIcon Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Juro Limited Edition

Mitsubishi launched the third-generation Outlander in 2012 with a redesigned exterior, new technology, and updated engines. More importantly, it also gained a hybrid drivetrain under the PHEV name. This version was unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show with a gasoline four-cylinder engine and two electric motors derived from the system used in the i-MiEV city car. The PHEV was a massive success, becoming the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicle in 2014 and 2015, with global sales passing the 100,000-unit mark in March 2016. In 2015, the Outlander received an extensive facelift that included a new grille, LED headlamps, and a quieter cabin.

With the PHEV model sliding into second place sales-wise in 2016, behind the redesigned Chevrolet Volt, Mitsubishi is already taking measure to ensure that the hybrid crossover remains competitive until the next-generation model arrives. In the U.K., the Japanese brand just launched the PHEV Juro, a limited-edition model that comes with extra features as standard. Although based on one of the least expensive trims, the Juro is well-equipped and features TomTom navigation and smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, among other features. What’s more, it doesn’t cost more than the model it is based on, enabling customers to make significant savings.

Unfortunately, the Juro isn’t available outside the United Kingdom, so don’t get you’re hopes up on seeing it in North America. But, until Mitsubishi offers something similar here, let’s have a closer look at the latest Outlander PHEV to arrive in British showrooms.

At the 2015 Paris Auto Show, Mitsubishi had a funky looking concept known as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Concept-S. We knew the current Outlander was getting pretty outdated, and as it turned out, this concept actually previewed what the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander would look like after the SUV went through a facelift. As expected, the 2016 Outlander is now on sale, sporting a similar design to what we saw on the PHEV Concept-S. Now, with the doors to the New York Auto Show wide open, we’ve gotten a look at the Outlander PHEV in production form for the U.S. market.

While the production form does look similar to the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, the PHEV actually took more cues from the front end of the concept than the regular Outlander. This means it will be easy to spot the PHEV in a crowd if you know what to look for. For now, some details about the Outlander PHEV are still top secret, but at least we have some official images and info to go on.

Don Swearingen, the Executive Vice President of MMNA, said, “What makes the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV so special is that it offers the best of both worlds with a balance of electric efficiency and long-range practicality” He continued, “Mitsubishi put its engineering prowess and knowledge to work to create a vehicle that meets the demand of a growing number of consumers who need a car that is capable and environmentally friendly. The Outlander PHEV will offer a high electric range and combined miles per gallon.”

According to Mitsubishi, the PHEV is already the top-selling PHEV in Europe and is the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. It’s said to “deliver SUV capabilities and EV fuel economy.” The Outlander is scheduled to hit showrooms and go on sale here in the U.S. by fall of this year. Before that happens, let’s take a look at the information and pictures we already have.

Mitsubishi mildly updated its Outlander Sport for the 2014 model year to better compete with other compact crossovers like the Jeep Patriot and Nissan Juke. That update brought about things like available LED running lights, LED brake lights, and even leather on the inside. The model didn’t change much for the 2015 model year, but another update has been announced for the 2016 model year.

This year, the front grille and fascia have been changed to provide a new look. There are now several new exterior colors available and new technology that brings the Outlander Sport more in line with its main competitors. The executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors said, “The Outlander Sport is a brand leader for Mitsubishi Motors, and we are excited to unveil this eye-catching 2016 model-year.” He continued, “The Outlander Sport has always been a fun vehicle that delivers on its promise of reliability and value, and the 2016 model year continues to do so with a great new family look that unifies the Mitsubishi CUV lineup.”

The 2016 Outlander Sport includes a new audio system, new high-quality interior fabrics, and a new interior color option. Furthermore, the Outlander Sport still starts out below 20 grand and includes a transferable limited warranty. That said, let’s take a look at what the 2016 model offers in more detail after the jump.

Outlander PHEV Baja Portalegre

It seems like a long time ago when we last saw a Mitsubishi win a significant rally. But things might be about to change, and we are basing that prediction solely on the way this Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Baja Portalegre 500 special looks like in this preview image!

This is the car Mitsu is entering in the Baja Portalegre 500 cross-country rally due to be held in the Portalegre municipality in the eastern part of Portugal from October 22nd to October 24th this year. Not only does it look awesome, the specially developed Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is also the only twin-motor contender since it’s a hybrid.

The car is based on the production model that’s been converted for a tough Baja rally with higher ground clearance and longer suspension stroke together with larger diameter rally tires as well as roll cage and safety and radio equipment. The performance is enhanced too, but they won’t say by how much – only that it takes full advantage of the upgraded PHEV system. The whole point of this effort, says Mitsubishi, is to promote development of EV and 4WD technologies. So they already have an excuse lineup for not winning.

Baja Portalegre 500 rally dates back to 1987 and is undoubtedly one of the toughest rallies still being held in Europe. It includes 500 kilometers of high speed driving over mainly dirt roads and serves as a warm-up for the Dakar Rally. It has three separate categories – automobile, motor bike and quad – with over 300 vehicles expected to take part.

After countless concept cars and teasers, Mitsubishi finally unveiled the 2016 Outlander at the 2015 New York Auto Show. The facelift comes as a last hurrah for the third-generation Outlander, which is scheduled to be replaced by a completely redesigned vehicle in 2017. To keep it fresh in a segment attended by many manufacturers, the Japanese automaker refined the SUV’s exterior looks and upgraded the interior and the chassis. Unfortunately for those of you hoping to get a more powerful Outlander, Mitsubishi decided not to meddle with the two engines offered in last year’s model.

Mitsubishi introduced the Outlander in 2001 as a midsize crossover based on the ASX concept. Initially known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek on the Japanese market, the first-gen Outlander was powered by a range of 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engines mated to four- and five-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The vehicle was launched in the U.S. in 2003 as a replacement for the Montero Sport. The second-gen Outlander arrived in 2005. The redesigned shell came with new engines, new gearboxes and new safety features. For the first time, the crossover gained a 3.0-liter V-6 and a six-speed, twin-clutch transmission. A 2009 facelift added the Lancer’s front end to the Outlander. The second-gen model was replaced altogether for the 2013 model year, when major visual and drivetrain updates were operated. More importantly, the Outlander became available as a plug-in hybrid under the P-HEV moniker.

Updated 06/02/2015: Mitsubishi announced prices for the all-new 2016 Outlander which is now available at dealers. Prices will start from $22,995 – which represents a drop of $200 over the previous year.

PostHeaderIcon 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Teased Ahead of New York Debut

Mitsubishi has just released a teaser photo and an invitation to “come see the new face of Mitsubishi Motors” ahead of the 2015 New York Auto Show, scheduled to begin on April 1st. Although Mitsubishi doesn’t give any details as to what vehicle it will unveil in New York, the teaser suggests it’s a crossover. And since Mitsubishi has been spotted testing a facelifted Outlander recently, it can only be the updated version of the brand’s three-row SUV.

The facelift comes to improve a crossover that has been Mitsubishi’s most successful model in the U.S. since its introduction in 2013. The SUV already received a mild update for the 2015 model year, but the 2016 version will bring many more improvements inside and out, including a front fascia inspired by concept cars such as the GC-PHEV and the Outlander PHEV Concept S. The 2016 facelift could also mark the introduction of the long-awaited plug-in hybrid model in the U.S., which has been previously reported to hit showrooms in the first quarter of 2016.

The teaser also tells us that the Outlander’s styling will trickle onto other Mitsubishi products, but I’m not getting my hopes up seeing it beyond the Outlander and Outlander Sport range. Stay tuned for the full details from New York next month.
