At this point, I think it’s safe to classify the Hyundai Sonata as a rock solid standby in the affordable mid-size commuter sedan segment. The nameplate has been in use since 1985, with its current seventh-generation first introduced in 2014. To keep it going strong, Hyundai just announced a newly refreshed iteration for the 2018 model year at this year’s New York International Auto Show, and it’s bringing revised styling, new features, better technology, and updated hardware. All in all, it’s a rather standard mid-cycle facelift for the seventh-gen, but still quite significant in its impact.

In fact, that’s what Hyundai was aiming for all along, especially when it came to the exterior styling. The fresh look incorporates what the automaker calls a cascading grille design up front, plus a “more assertive profile,” and a redesigned rear end outfitted with a new, svelte taillight design.

We think it looks pretty good, moving the aesthetic ahead in a refined, attractive way. Not only does it look nice, but Hyundai also managed to dig under the skin to make it handle better, not to mention make it a little quicker and a bit more efficient as well.

Lexus just presented the new LS 500 at the Detroit Auto Show as a 2018 model that’s set to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2017. It’s only been a few months, but Lexus has moved forward already by announcing the Lexus LS 500h and now, at the New York Auto Show, the Lexus LS 500 F Sport. Lexus will lead you to believe that the new F Sport offers an enhanced driving experience over the standard LS 500, but once you dig through all of that PR talk, you’ll find that the big motivating factor – that 3.5-liter V-6 – offers the same 415 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. There are some chassis upgrades, however, that includes an update to Lexus’ VDIM system, a system that integrates ABS, traction control, stability control, EPS and a few other functions all into one box. Now, the system is able to control all vehicle subsystems including braking, steering, powertrain functions, and the suspension system, all of which is based on vehicle motion, yaw, roll, and pitch.

So, when you think of it that way, perhaps the F Sport does offer an enhanced driving experience, but for now, it’s just words. We’ll have to reserve judgment until we actually get behind the wheel. But, it’s not all about what happens under the metal as there are some interior and exterior changes to speak of as well. The new Honda Civic Type R made its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and aside from the usual aggressive looks and high-performance drivetrain, it came with great news for U.S. enthusiasts: it’s finally coming to North America! Come April 2017, and the Japanese hot-hatch made its U.S. debut at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

The North American showcase doesn’t bring anything new spec-wise, but the car displayed at the Javits Center sports the company’s iconic Championship White color. A trademark hue for high-performance Hondas, Championship White, has been used in the past on the first-generation Civic Type R, NSX Type R, and even the Acura Integra Type R. And, needless to say, the new high-performance hatchback looks gorgeous in it.

As a brief reminder, the Type R uses a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The four-banger mates to a six-speed manual with automatic rev-matching. Race-inspired goodies include adjustable suspension with a Dual-Axis front setup, aluminum lower arms, an adaptive steering system, Brembo brakes, and Continental performance tires.

Standard features will also include a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, navigation, sports seats, a leather steering wheel, and a 540-watt premium audio system. Pricing information is not yet available, but the Type R will likely cost around $35,000 before options. For reference, the base Civic model starts from $19,700, while the range-topping Sport Touring trim retails from $28,000. The Civic Si is expected to retail in the mid-$20,000 range.

The seventh-generation Golf is entering its sixth year of production for 2018, but instead of updating the model extensively or bringing about a new generation, VW decided to provide some minor updates across the whole line. This includes LED taillights and daytime running lights as standard equipment on the outside to go with new trim panels and material options on the inside. Those looking to upgrade their headlights can now opt for full-LED units as opposed to the Bi-Xenon option of yesteryear. But, when it comes to the 2018 model year, it’s really about technology. Entry level models across the line will see an upgrade that replaces the outdated five-inch infotainment screens with 6.5-inch units. SE and SEL trim levels will now get eight-inch touchscreen units, while the Golf R gets Volkswagen’s digital cockpit as standard equipment.

Golf S models will now get automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and a new chrome grille, while SEL models now include 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and an auto-dimming mirror. Do I have any GTI fans out there? If so, you’ll be happy to know that the base Golf GTI gets a power update for 2018 that brings it up to par with the Sport and higher trim levels. Instead of getting 210 ponies and 258 pound-feet (on premium fuel, of course) the base model will now deliver the same 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet available at 4,700 rpm and 1,500 rpm, respectively. All three trim levels of the GTI still get the option of a six-speed DSG or six-speed manual. (Save yourself the heartache and just get the manual, okay?)

The Golf GTI S model gets a new stop-start feature when equipped with an automatic transmission and a new design for those 18-inch rollers. SE trim gets the performance brakes from the Golf R to go with the limited-slip VAQ differential. The GTI Autobahn trim gets new DCC suspension control. You’ll find all of the aforementioned updates, include the LED headlights DRLS, will show up in the Golf R.

Audi is celebrating the success of Audi Sport division with a special-edition R8 that pays tribute to the track-only LMS. It’s called the R8 Coupe Audi Sport Edition and made its public debut at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

Designed as a tribute for the highly successful R8 LMS, the Audi Sport Edition comes wrapped in the traditional colors of the company’s racing division: silver, red, and black. On top of the special livery and the custom wheels, the limited-edition supercar also sports a bespoke interior. What’s more, it’s limited to just 200 units globally, which makes it the most exclusive second-generation R8 to date.

Unfortunately, there are no drivetrain upgrades to talk about, but with the R8 still fresh, it’s not like the German supecar is in need of more oomph for public road use. For now, an exclusive livery and a custom interior seem to be enough to satisfy custom demand.

SUVs and crossovers are all the rage at this year’s New York Auto Show, and one of the most rage-y of them all is the Genesis GV80 Concept. This fuel cell concept previews an upcoming luxury SUV from Hyundai’s sub-brand in charge of high-end models, Genesis. 

Despite being forward-looking with its on-board technology Genesis GV80 Concept has a traditional approach to luxury. It puts emphasize no size, interior space, exterior bling, and indulgent features such as a 22-inch curved OLED infinity display or a concave gorilla glass touchpad and knurled metal wheel with handwriting recognition. But it does feature the latest plug-in hydrogen fuel cell electric technology to combine eco-performance and capability. Not that you can expect to see this in a near-future production model, but some day.

“The GV80 Concept is a SUV that alludes to the confidence and evolution of the Genesis brand – its design is timeless, with an understated yet dynamic overall surface complexity,” said Head of Genesis Design, Luc Donckerwolke. “These are all characteristics that embody Genesis products and delicately reflect distinctive elements, which you’ll continue to see in future models from our brand.”

SUVs and crossovers are all the rage at this year’s New York Auto Show, and one of the most rage-y of them all is the Genesis GV80 Concept. This fuel cell concept previews an upcoming luxury SUV from Hyundai’s sub-brand in charge of high-end models, Genesis. 

Despite being forward-looking with its on-board technology Genesis GV80 Concept has a traditional approach to luxury. The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a secret no more. Surely by this time you’ve read the stats and seen the incredible wheelie this drag-pack special does when launching hard off the line. We’re here to talk about Dodge’s big reveal – the big party that went down Tuesday night, just hours before the kickoff of the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

It started off at 8:00 p.m. with a tedious countdown. Mopar fans, along with Chevy and Ford folks, watched in anticipation for the Demon. THREE… TWO… ONE… the timer runs out and TV personality Chris Jacobs introduces Dodge’s huge display, along with the crowd of people live streaming the event from around the world. The pleasantries move along when NHRA Top Fuel Dragster Leah Pritchett joins Jacobs to banter about the Demon. Turns out, she’s not just some spokeswoman or pretty face, rather she actually helped test the Demon during its development. How cool is that?

Craig Jackson, namesake of the Barrett-Jackson car auctions, then speculates on how much the first production Challenger Demon might sell for. “It’s hard to say, but based on what the Hellcat did at $825,000, it’ll be a lot.” Jackson isn’t kidding. The Demon might indeed break auction records when it goes under the hammer sometime this fall.

Then things start rolling with a big, yellow Viper. Yeah, it’s not the Demon, but you won’t want to miss the big, smoky, tire-shredding video but out by Dodge and Pennzoil. You won’t even care it’s a marketing stunt.
