PostHeaderIcon Remember the Crazy Chevy SSR? Doug Does

Chevrolet has made some interesting things over its 100 years, but none compete with the 2003-2006 SSR. This contraption defied classification and spawned during a troubled time during “Old GM’s” heyday and right before its collapse in 2009. The SSR is a hardtop convertible pickup with a semi-permanent tonneau cover over its composite bed, powered by a small-block V-8 and wrapped in retro styling that harks back to the late 1940s Advance design pickups. Oh, and it shares its hydro-formed ladder frame and suspension system with the Chevy Trailblazer.

On the inside, the SSR was a hodgepodge of mid-2000s GM infamy. Green digital readouts, a chunky steering wheel, a hundred-button stereo face, and odd proportion everywhere. But for all its weirdness, the SSR’s interior had some redeeming qualities. The center console and door panels featured body-colored paint; there were aluminum bits to brighten things up, and heated seats.

The small-block V-8 was the third-generation 5.3-liter making 300 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic was the only choice. Then for its final year in 2006, Chevy dropped in the 390-horsepower 6.0-liter V-8 with 405 pound-feet of torque. The extra power really woke up the SSR, but the best improvement was the available six-speed manual transmission. Power was only sent to the rear wheels.

Despite its quirks, the SSR’s greatest downfall was its price. In 2003 it started at $41,995 and could be optioned up to $47,000. By 2006, the base price had grown to $43,180 and its topped out around $50,000. That was rather expensive for the time, especially considering the competition that shared that price bracket.

Still, the Chevy SSR was a unicorn that will forever lurk in the halls of GM oddities. Give it 40 years, and these things will command big money on the auction block. For now, you’ll just catch glares and stares as you drive the SSR down the road.

PostHeaderIcon Nissan Announces Pricing For 2018 Titan, Titan XD

Nissan has announced pricing for its 2018 Titan and Titan XD models, along with the price for the pickups’ new Midnight Edition. Both trucks carry over unchanged from 2017, including cab, bed, trim, and engine configurations. As such, Nissan is only upping the price by $200 across the board. The monochromatic Midnight Edition, which brings several visual updates to the trucks, adds an extra $1,250 to the MSRP.

The Titan and Titan XD are slowing gaining steam in the highly competitive pickup market, selling 7,679 examples in November inside the U.S. That’s up from only 4,114 in October and 3,773 in September. While these numbers are far less than Ford, GM, and Ram’s monthly truck sales, Nissan is playing out a strategy. Titan sales have been targeted to certain truck-centric markets like Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City. This allows the automaker to focus its marketing dollars while allowing its Canton, Mississippi assembly plant to ramp up production.

Nissan’s overall truck strategy has the half-ton Titan competing against stalwarts like the Silverado, F-150, Ram 1500, and Tundra, while the Titan XD carves out its own niche market in between the half-ton and three-quarter ton weight classes. Nissan is also betting big with its association to Cummins, which provides the optional 5.0-liter V-8 turbodiesel offered in the XD.

For our opinions and driving impressions, check out our review of the 2017 Titan and 2016 Titan XD.

PostHeaderIcon The Best Truck For Moving A Big Christmas Haul

Imagine, for a second, a long-lost and filthy rich uncle invites your family over for Christmas. Under the tree is every imaginable gift to make up for his years of absence. (It’s a stretch, yeah, but play along.) The kids tear through the paper revealing massive gifts that somehow weight a ton. Now, how will you get these presents home? Well, luckily there are pickup trucks built to handle the load.

General Motors, Ford, and Ram’s offerings have all grown exponentially capable over the last decade, with some hauling and towing more than ever though possible. In many cases, a commercial driver’s license is needed to stay legal. Here, we’re going to focus on one-ton trucks with single-rear wheels and achieving the maximum payload capacity. So, if you’re needed a truck that can haul, this is for you.

Continue reading for more Christmas cheer and pickup specs.

3. Ram 3500HD

2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty - image 726141

4,140 pounds of payload

Coming in at third on our list is the Ram 3500HD Built as a regular cab and long bed, the single-rear wheeled Ram is capable of carrying 4,140 pounds in its bed. That’s pretty impressive when compared to a half-ton or even three-quarter ton truck, but doesn’t quite stack up to the one-ton competition.

Unlike the Ram 1500 and 2500 models with their multi-link and coil spring rear suspension setup, the 3500 uses a traditional leaf spring design. The thick leaf pack affords more weight tolerance, though at the compromise of unladen ride quality. Still, when it comes to moving heavy objects, the Ram 3500HD does a fine job. The Ram requires the larger gasoline engine option – the big 6.4-liter Hemi V-8. While you’d think the 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six would be the better choice for heavy hauling, the turbodiesel’s weight adds to the Ram’s overall curb weight and therefore directly drops the available payload capacity. It’s worth mentioning that by opting for the dual-rear wheels, the Ram 3500HD’s payload shoots up to 7,350 pounds – the most of three trucks with the dually option.

Prices for this particular 3500HD SRW with a 4,140-pound rating start at $33,790.

Read our full review on the 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty.

2. Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD - image 648533

4,390 pounds of payload

The Chevy takes second place in this comparison, much like it does in the sales wars. Built as a 3500HD with the regular cab and eight-foot bed and powered by the 6.0-liter V-8 and with rear-wheel drive, the Silverado will haul 4,390 pounds in the bed. The Silverado also requires the 11,100-pound GVWR weight rating option to be selected. As with the Ram, the Silverado 3500HD with dual rear wheels is capable of hauling much more. In this case, it’s 7,153 pounds – again with the gasoline engine and rear-wheel drive.

Pricing for this specifically configured truck starts at $44,720 in the base WT trim. That’s a hefty increase over the Ram’s base price.

1. Ford F-350 Super Duty

2017 Ford Super Duty - image 648383

4,710 pounds of payload

Defying conventional wisdom of cab and bed configurations, reaching the maximum payload in the 2018 Ford Super Duty without dual-rear wheels requires the Super Cab and long bed configuration with 4WD. Set up this way, the F-350 will haul 4,710 pounds in its aluminum bed. The 6.2-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic transmission are required, along with the 11,500-pound GVWR.

Like the Silverado and Ram, the Ford Super Duty’s payload rating jumps significantly when adding the dual-rear-wheel option. In that case, the F-350 Super Duty will haul 7,630 pounds. That configuration requires the regular cab, long bed option with rear-wheel drive.

PostHeaderIcon BMW’s Holiday Video Features Rarely Seen M3 E30 Pickup

With Christmas literally being a few days away, automakers have started rolling out their holiday greetings for the masses. BMW’s M Division is the latest to do so with a holiday-themed ad that features a vehicle that was never sold to the public. We’ve seen it a handful of times over the years, but this is probably the first time Bimmer is using the pickup version of the BMW M3 E30 for any of its promotional videos. Consider it a treat then that BMW is doing it for the holidays. Merry Christmas, indeed!

“If you’re not familiar with the BMW M3 E30 pickup, it’s because the German automaker never put it up in the market”

If you’re not familiar with the BMW M3 E30 pickup, it’s because the German automaker never put it up in the market. History points to this particular vehicle as a skunkworks project created by BMW M all the way back in 1986 to serve a variety of purposes, including transporting parts and other work equipment. Unbelievably, BMW M continue to use the M3 pickup until 2012 before retiring it for good.

Five years later, the performance brand dusted off the M3-based model to serve as the start of this Christmas-themed commercial. The ad itself is pretty straight-forward. It starts with a mother and a daughter making final preparations for their Christmas decorations. The father is noticeably absent because he’s bringing home the Christmas three, all wrapped up in the M3 pickup’s bed. It turns out; dear ‘ol daddy had far too much fun power sliding the M3 pickup that he forgot about the tree at the back. Once he gets home, beaming with pride over his road exploits, he turns to see what was left of the Christmas tree. It wasn’t a pretty sight, and his daughter’s face has “disappointed” written all over it.

“For better or worse, the ad does a good job touting the performance abilities of the M3 pickup.”

For better or worse, the ad does a good job touting the performance abilities of the M3 pickup. The vehicle started its life using a 2.0-liter engine sourced from the 320iS before being replaced by the 2.3-liter unit powering the M3 E30. The latter was capable of producing 200 horsepower, so it’s understandable for the dad to go a little crazy with it in the snow. If only he remembered there was a Christmas tree in the back…

PostHeaderIcon GM Will Continue Current Silverado & Sierra Production Past 2019 Model Launch

General Motors has apparent plans to keep the current-generation 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 in production while simultaneously building and selling the all-new, 2019 versions. GM has tapped its Oshawa plant in Canada to continue production while its other plants in the U.S. and Mexico will build the new model.

“This strategy will help us meet customer demand as we transition our production and introduce our exciting new models into the market starting later in 2018,” said Jennifer Wright, a GM Canada spokeswoman to Automotive News Canada. “The length of the program in Oshawa will be dependent on market demand.”

For anyone who has followed the auto industry, this news isn’t surprising, especially for GM. Most recently, GM built both the previous and new generation of Equinox crossover and Jeep plans to do the same with the outgoing Wrangler JK while the new 2018 Wrangler JL’s production is ramping up. Automotive News reports that even the current Ram 1500 will continue production alongside the next-generation Ram 1500 when it begins assembly in early 2018.

As for the Oshawa’s future, Canada’s Unifor union president Jerry Dias, told AN, “They are being very careful about what they are announcing right now. But they have invested a fortune in Oshawa. Right now the commitment is to the existing portfolio. More decisions will be made.”

Why It Matters

GM Will Continue Current Silverado & Sierra Production Past 2019 Model Launch - image 753281
“By continuing to produce current models, it gives automakers the chance to perfect the new model’s assembly while giving customers a shot at deeply discounted “classic” models.”

Automakers cannot afford to create a gap in their sales flow. Simply ending production of an outgoing model, allowing for weeks of renovation and retooling, and then spending several more weeks ramping up production just isn’t feasible. By continuing to produce current models, it gives automakers the chance to perfect the new model’s assembly while giving customers a shot at deeply discounted “classic” models.

That “classic” name actually has a history at GM. The automaker has used it on several occasions to denote previous-generation models that share the same model year as the new generation vehicle. Notable nameplates with the Classic treatment include the Malibu, Caprice, and of course, the Silverado. The last Silverado Classic happened in 2007 as GM transitioned from 1999-2006 GMT800 pickup to the 2007-2013 GMT900 pickup.

PostHeaderIcon Add UPS to the Growing List of Companies That Have Placed Orders For Tesla’s Semi Trucks

Gets Tesla Autopilot and all autonomous features

Walmart, DHL, Anheuser-Busch, and PepsiCo. have all signed up and ordered Tesla’s all-electric semi trucks. Now you can add DHL rival UPS to that list. The global delivery giant has pre-ordered 125 semi trucks from the electric car maker, making it the latest large-scale company to try out Tesla’s new breakthrough product.

Add UPS to the Growing List of Companies That Have Placed Orders For Tesla's Semi Trucks - image 745865
“Taking into account UPS’ pre-order of 125 semi trucks, Tesla probably has over 500 orders of its trucks already”

It’s no secret that Tesla’s all-electric semi trucks have the attention of a lot of companies. Taking into account UPS’ pre-order of 125 semi trucks, Tesla probably has over 500 orders of its trucks already. That’s an impressive feat for something that a lot of people were skeptical about when Elon Musk first announced plans for the all-electric trucks.

In the case of UPS, no less than the company’s chief information and engineering officer, Juan Perez, confirmed the company’s pre-order of 125 trucks. “For more than a century, UPS has led the industry in testing and implementing new technologies for more efficient fleet operations,” he said. “We look forward to expanding further our commitment to fleet excellence with Tesla. These groundbreaking electric tractors are poised to usher in a new era in improved safety, reduced environmental impact, and reduced cost of ownership.”

That’s as good a stamp of approval as you’ll see from a company that’s considered as one of the biggest fleet operators in the world with 108,000 delivery vehicles scattered all over the globe.

Add UPS to the Growing List of Companies That Have Placed Orders For Tesla's Semi Trucks - image 746090
“UPS didn’t say how many of these orders are for the 300-mile range version of Tesla’s electric semis and how many are for the 500-mile range version”

UPS didn’t say how many of these orders are for the 300-mile range version of Tesla’s electric semis and how many are for the 500-mile range version. What we do know is that UPS is already making a huge push towards offering this kind of service for the future. In addition to its order of Tesla’s electric semis, the company is also converting as many as 1,500 of its delivery trucks to battery-electric. Likewise, it has also purchased Daimler’s new electric trucks to add to its growing fleet. All these moves are part of UPS’ goal to bolster its fleet by buying one vehicle with alternative fuel or advanced technology for every four vehicles it buys by 2020.

UPS’ order of Tesla’s all-electric semi trucks didn’t come cheap either. Taking into account the deposit price of $20,000 for a base reservation of the production model, UPS’ order comes with a deposit of $2.5 million.

Through all of this, one thing has become clear about Tesla’s all-electric semi trucks: the demand for it is strong.

PostHeaderIcon Word Has it the Tesla Semi Performance Specs are the Real McCoy

Gets Tesla Autopilot and all autonomous features

Are Tesla’s electric semi trucks really capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds on their own and 20 seconds with a full load behind them? Better yet, can these trucks really hit a top speed of 65 mph while going up a five-percent grade? Since we’re already asking these questions, do these trucks really have the range to travel up to 500 miles? All these numbers were presented by Tesla during the electric truck’s unveiling last month. Almost all of them are mind-blowing by industry standards so, naturally, the specs came with plenty of skepticism. Are these specs real or fabricated? Well, according to Electrek, a transporter that participated in the Tesla Semi test program confirmed that the specs are, in fact, real — or at least most of them are.

Word Has it the Tesla Semi Performance Specs are the Real McCoy - image 745865
“When it comes to vehicles as important as Tesla’s all-electric semi-truck, there’s bound to be a lot of discussion surrounding its capabilities”

When it comes to vehicles as important as Tesla’s all-electric semi-truck, there’s bound to be a lot of discussion surrounding its capabilities. That’s completely understandable, and it’s also to be expected. What gets lost in all the hype is the veracity of Tesla’s claims. Well, it’s not as concrete an answer as we’re expecting, but Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas claims to have spoken with XPO Logistics, a company that helped Tesla test its prototypes, and it revealed that there’s a lot of truth to Tesla’s claims.

“The Tesla Semi has already received important validation from some customers,” Jonas wrote in his note clients. “We spoke with mgmt. at XPO Logistics, one of the largest logistics companies in the country, that has been talking to Tesla on their EV semi for the past 18 months, including testing live prototypes. XPO mgmt. confirmed that in their testing, the features and capabilities of the truck mostly lived up to Tesla’s claims at the launch event, including the performance vs. diesel trucks up a 5% grade (55 mph vs 45 mph), recharging time, safety/anti jackknifing features and payload (similar to a typical diesel truck, as confirmed by Tesla).”

Word Has it the Tesla Semi Performance Specs are the Real McCoy - image 746090
“The range of miles on a single charge with a full load will largely decide how successful these all-electric semi trucks are.”

These are incredible revelations, for sure, but there was no mention on whether the electric semis are capable of the 500-mile range that the company promised. As impressive as these performance numbers are, the range of miles on a single charge with a full load will largely decide how successful these all-electric semi trucks are. Granted, XPO Logistics may not have been able to test that one completely, so it’s still too early to assume the real range these all-electric semis have.

But as far as Tesla’s other performance claims go, they look to be legitimate. Incredible, right?

PostHeaderIcon New vs. Old: Exterior Updates to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado

Chevrolet’s soft debut of the 2019 Silverado 1500 Trailboss foregoes the big, juicy details, but gives us a great first glimpse at the all-new, next-generation pickup. About the only official specs include the higher strength steel bed floor, a substantial reduction in overall weight, and the presence of that new Trailboss trim. Chevy is withholding the rest until the 2018 Detroit Auto Show in mid-January.

Nevertheless, we’re going over what we know so far and taking a close look at the differences between the outgoing 2014-2018 Silverado and the 2019 model. Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments below!

Continue reading for more on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado.

What We Know

“The 2019 Silverado is completely new – that much we fully expect”

The 2019 Silverado is completely new – that much we fully expect. A new frame made from stronger and lighter steel, updated suspension parts, and lighter body panels are all highly probable. Chevy did say the 2019 Silverado will be substantially lighter than before while its capability will be greater. New engine and transmission combinations are officially happening, though Chevy was mum on the details.
Expect updates to the 4.3-liter V-6 and 5.3- and 6.2-liter V-8s. Chevy will certainly include its new 10-speed automatic transmission in the Silverado, too. A possibility of a forced-induction engine – like a turbocharged V-6 – could be happening, as well.

As for the added lightness, Chevy only revealed details of its new cargo bed. The floor is made from a roll-formed, higher-grade steel alloy. Chevy says it’s stronger yet lighter. The rest of the Silverado will use “mixed materials and advanced manufacturing, “ though no word on what that actually means. Rumors suggest the bed could be made of carbon fiber. Since the floor is known to be steel, perhaps it’s the bed walls that get the high-tech material.

More Off-Road Tech

New vs. Old: Exterior Updates to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado - image 753284
“The Z71 package includes a two-inch suspension lift and Goodyear DuraTrac tires”

The truck Chevy used to debut the 2019 Silverado is the Trailboss trim – an upgraded Z71 package that includes a two-inch suspension lift and Goodyear DuraTrac tires. Chevy says it’s one of eight trim levels available, which falls in line with the trims currently available on the 2018 Silverado. These include the WT, LS, LT, LT Z71, LTZ, LTZ Z71, and High Country. The Trailboss will be available in the LT trim and likely the LTZ trim. The red one seen here is the LT trim.

It’s clear the Silverado Trailboss isn’t a Ford F-150 Raptor fighter. Rather, this will go head-to-head with the Ram Rebel and Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. Technically, the Ford F-150 FX4 package should be included in the fight, as well, though it’s not as dedicated as the others.

A Visual Comparison

left
right
“It’s clear from the images the 2019 Silverado shares no exterior parts with the outgoing pickup”

It’s clear from the images the 2019 Silverado shares no exterior parts with the outgoing pickup. Even the A-pillars, roof, and doors are new, confirming the 2019 Silverado’s complete revamp. The windshield is more raked for better aerodynamics and the side mirrors are now perched on the doors rather than mounted by the windows. This will help both reduce wind noise and aerodynamic efficiency.

Up front, the grille is still upright but shares no cues or design features with the outgoing style. Projector beam headlights are stacked atop the amber parking lights with the fender cutting into the grille and housing the LED daytime running lights. The bumper has a familiar design with the fog lights and tow hooks mounted together, a design cue seen on older Silverados. Red tow hooks apparently come on the Trailboss trim, too. Noticeably missing is a big, ugly front air dam, though we expect non-Trailboss models will have one.

Fender Vents

New vs. Old: Exterior Updates to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado - image 753325
“Perhaps the most interesting feature of the 2019 Silverado’s front end is the fender vents”

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the 2019 Silverado’s front end is the fender vents. The vertical vents are located between the front bumper and fender. The fender bulges outward, leaving space between itself and the amber parking light and bumper. How this plays into aerodynamics or drivetrain cooling is yet unknown. This feature could also be unique to the Trailboss trim, too. That seems especially plausible considering the body seam between the vent and front fender.

Around the Sides

New vs. Old: Exterior Updates to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado - image 753330
“The 2019 Silverado is far more sculpted and swoopy verses the previous Silverado”

The 2019 Silverado is far more sculpted and swoopy verses the previous Silverado. Gone are the squared-off fenders, replaced with rounded wheel wells for the first time since the second-generation C/K generation ended in 1972. A strong character line runs from the headlights through the front fender and then dives sharply under the side mirror. The line then runs across the doors and then dissipates within the rear fender bulge. A second character line runs just above the door handles and into the rear taillights before continuing onto the tailgate. A detail worth pointing out is the keyless entry button on all four door handles.

The Silverado Trailboss comes with some handsome and blacked out, double five-spoke wheels. They come wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires. It is interesting that no side steps or rock sliders come with the Trailboss package, especially considering its off-roading intentions.

Out Back

New vs. Old: Exterior Updates to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado - image 753283
“New for 2019 are the chrome-tipped dual exhaust pipes integrated into the bumper’s lower half”

The 2019 Silverado’s business end is highly stylized yet ready for work. The tailgate features a retro-style CHEVROLET embossing right into the metal, while the Silverado and trim level badges are chrome lettering. The step bumper returns with larger steps for easier access into the bed. The trailer hitch receiver and trailer wiring connection remain almost unchanged, as does the access hole for the hand-crank winch that lowers the spare tire from under the bed. New for 2019 are the chrome-tipped dual exhaust pipes integrated into the bumper’s lower half. This looks similar to the Ram 1500’s dual exhaust treatment, but doesn’t blatantly copy the design detail.

Looking closely, more aerodynamic features are seen back here, too. The trailing edge of the cab has a spoiler integrated into its design. The third brake light seamlessly follows the spoiler and even appears to incorporate a camera for viewing the bed. The tailgate has a slight spoiler, as well, with a thick lip along the top. These two features should help the 2019 Silverado slip through the air more efficiently.

Badge Locations

New vs. Old: Exterior Updates to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado - image 753328

General Motors’ pickups have had numerous locations for badging over the years. The outgoing Silverado has its main badges on the front doors, while the GMC Sierra places the high on the font fenders. It seems Chevy will follow GMC’s lead for 2019; the Z71 badge seen on the new Silverado is placed predominately ahead of the side mirrors. At face values, this serves two purposes. One, it puts the badge at eye level, making the truck’s trim level easy to spot, and two, it frees up the door space for company logos.

Around back, the Silverado badge and trim level continue to reside on the tailgate, though the embossed CHEVROLET logo hasn’t been seen in several generations. Most recently, the embossed logo was seen on the ill-fated Pro-Tec composite bed offered on the 2001-2003 Silverado.

What We Expect Next

“Chevy will divulge all the details at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show come mid-January”

Chevy will divulge all the details at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show come mid-January. Until then, we can only speculate. We expect the interior to have improved fit and better materials, more storage space, and hopefully a completely flat rear load floor in extended and crew cab models. Updated in-dash tech will also be included, along with a 360-degree camera system should be present.

As for powertrains, expect to see the venerable 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s return, but perhaps with updates for more power and increased fuel economy. The 4.3-liter should be present, too, but perhaps with a turbocharger or two for increased power with added fuel economy. Chevy’s 10-speed automatic transmission is expected on all but the WT trims, which will likely get the existing six-speed or even the eight-speed automatic. The base trucks will likely continue using a manual transfer case, while upper trims will get a push-button system with an Auto mode.

The 2019 Chevy Silverado will make its appearance in dealership showrooms sometime in the third quarter of 2018. Pricing hasn’t been revealed, of course, but expect a slight increase over the outgoing Silverado.

PostHeaderIcon This Is It! Meet the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Continuing the modern trend of sneak-peak reveals ahead of official debuts, Chevrolet dramatically introduced its all-new, 2019 Silverado 1500 pickup truck by airlifting the truck under a helicopter on December 16. The spectacle took place at the Texas Motor Speedway in view of the media and members of Chevy’s new Truck Legends owners club.

Chevy hasn’t released much information on the new 2019 Silverado, but we do know several key points. For starters, the new Silverado will come with a Trailboss trim. First seen on the Chevy Colorado, this trim takes the Z71 off-road package and adds a two-inch suspension lift and Goodyear DuraTrac tires. Chevy also says the new Silverado will come with more engine and transmission combinations, more technology and convenience features, and has a “significant reduction” in weight over the outgoing Silverado.

What We Know

“The new Silverado 1500 is lighter than before thanks to "mixed materials and advanced manufacturing."”

Chevy didn’t divulge too many details about its new 2019 Silverado – we’ll have to wait until its official debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show come January. For now, we know the new Silverado 1500 is lighter than before thanks to “mixed materials and advanced manufacturing.” While Chevy did not confirm the rumored carbon fiber cargo bed, it did reveal the bed’s floor is a higher-grade steel alloy that’s roll-formed for added strength and added lightness. Perhaps the bed walls will use carbon fiber. Either way, it seems Chevy smartly avoided using aluminum so it won’t have to backpedal on its “aluminum sucks” ad campaign that targeted the aluminum-bodied Ford F-150.

Chevy also dropped clues on the 2019 Silverado’s trim levels saying eight will be available. Currently, seven trim are available. These include the WT, LS, LT, LT Z71, LTZ, LTZ Z71, and High Country. Adding the Trailboss trim brings the count to eight. There is one catch, however. Chevy says the truck that debuted is an LT Trailboss; that suggests an LTZ Trailboss is possible. If that’s the case, other changes to the standard trim level lineup will be required.

“As for the 2019 Silverado’s outward appearance, the truck is sleeker than before, with zero body panels shared from the outgoing truck”

As for the 2019 Silverado’s outward appearance, the truck is sleeker than before, with zero body panels shared from the outgoing truck. The grille is still flat and upright, but its details are completely new. Updated LED daytime running lights and projector beam headlights define the face, while lower fog lights sit next to the Trailboss’ red-colored tow hooks.

Gone are the squared-off fenders and replaced with a more rounded, sculpted design. The side mirrors are now separated from the door rather than attached next to the window. This will help reduce wind noise while cutting drag. The step bumper returns, but now features rectangular, chrome-tipped exhaust pipes tucked into its lower half. The trailer hitch receiver, trailer wiring connections, and access hole for the spare tire winch remain unchanged.

Last but certainly not least, the tailgate features a retro-style CHEVROLET stamping. The Silverado and trim level badges are set in chrome letter along the tailgate’s lower edge.

Thankfully, we won’t have long to wait before Chevy releases the full barrage of information on its new half-ton truck. The 2018 Detroit Auto Show is happening January 13 through 28, with all the reveals scheduled during the first two days. As always, stay tuned to TopSpeed.com for the latest in breaking news.

PostHeaderIcon 2019 GM Pickups May Have Carbon Fiber Beds

General Motors might be using carbon fiber construction within the cargo bed of its next-generation 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The news comes from an insider close to GM who spoke with The Wall Street Journal. Apparently, GM will use the composite beds to save weight while adding strength. Only higher-end trims will be available with the composite box, though its availability could spread throughout the lineup.

The move would come as an alternative to aluminum, which Chevrolet has relentlessly poked fun at Ford for using with its 2015-current F-150. TV commercials and other ads have portrayed Ford’s aluminum beds as weaker than Chevy’s steel beds. Moving to carbon fiber would reduce the bed’s weight while providing more strength than aluminum – or so the insider says.

We can expect GM to debut its new pickups at the 2018 Detroit Auto show in January or the Chicago Auto Show in February. Sales will likely begin in the third or fourth quarter of 2018. GM hasn’t commented on the WSJ report or alluded to carbon fiber being present. There is also no word on whether the beds would be an extra-cost option or come as standard equipment on LTZ or High Country models. We should find out more in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to TopSpeed.com for the latest.

Is The Market Ready For This?

“Moving to carbon fiber would reduce the bed’s weight while providing more strength than aluminum – or so the insider says.”

it might come as a surprise, but this won’t be GM’s first attempt at using alternative materials for cargo bed construction. Back in 2001, the Chevy Silverado 1500 was available with a composite (read: plastic) cargo box as an $850 option. It was called the Pro-Tec bed. Chevy barely advertised the feature but promoted the bed’s inability to rust or dent. The bean counters high in GM’s towers expected to sell 50,000 examples a year, but missed the mark by an insane margin; only 5,000 were sold in 2001 and another 5,000 in 2002. Chevy canned the Pro-Tec bed after just two years, despite the massive $64 million investment in design, development, plant expansion, and production equipment. It was a massive corporate blunder.

Hopefully, GM has been studying its history in order to not repeat the same mistakes. A lot could go wrong with a carbon fiber bed. The material is notoriously hard to produce relative to stamping steel or aluminum and the costs associated are far greater. Perhaps that’s why GM will only use the carbon fiber beds on high-end trims. That would allow fat-wallet customers to eat the development costs before making the bed available elsewhere in the lineup.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 - image 524787

Ram is also rumored to have some innovated bed technology coming, too. Its next-generation Ram 1500 will debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show and arrive in showrooms as a 2019 model. Patent drawings and spy photos show the Ram’s tailgate having a 60/40 vertical split, allowing for more customizable uses. The tailgate will open both in the traditional fold-down manner, along with swinging open like French doors. Only the Honda Ridgeline has something similar.

Advancements in bed design have been sorely lacking compared to innovations found elsewhere in modern trucks, so it will be nice to see two automakers debut new bed technologies side-by-side.

What do you think? Is carbon fiber a good choice for a pickup bed? Let us know in the comments below.

PostHeaderIcon PepsiCo Orders Up 100 Semi Trucks from Tesla

Gets Tesla Autopilot and all autonomous features

Add PepsiCo to the growing number of companies that are buying in on Tesla’s new electric truck. The food and beverage giant has reserved 100 units of the electric semis, joining the likes of Wal-Mart, Anheuser-Busch, and Sysco as the first wave of companies that are buying into what the electric car maker is selling. The electric trucks are seen as affordable alternatives to diesel trucks with the range and cargo capacity to compete with its traditional counterparts.

“PepsiCo’s order of 100 trucks is the biggest one to date for Tesla”

PepsiCo’s order of 100 trucks is the biggest one to date for Tesla. It’s a big deal for the EV company to have a company as big as PepsiCo step in and show some confidence in its product. Other companies like Wal-Mart and Anheuser-Busch have placed orders. Fleet operator J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc and foodservice distribution company Sysco Corp. have done the same too. According to Reuters’ tally, the total number of reservations to date sits at 267 trucks. But that number could also be the tip of the iceberg. It’s possible that Tesla has also taken reservations from other companies and smaller truck operators without publicly announcing it. Other reports even suggest that Tesla has actually taken around 1,200 reservations for its trucks. Regardless of the number, the interest in the product is a good thing for Tesla.

In PepsiCo’s case, the F&B giant indicated that its order of 100 trucks is intended for shipments between manufacturing and distribution facilities and to retailers within the 500-mile range that Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised. There’s a possibility that PepsiCo orders more trucks in the future, but that’s contingent on how successful its trial runs are.

“PepsiCo and all the other companies that placed orders for the trucks still have some waiting to do before taking delivery of the haulers”

For now, PepsiCo and all the other companies that placed orders for the trucks still have some waiting to do before taking delivery of the haulers. Tesla doesn’t expect the electric big rigs to hit production until 2019, and that’s assuming that there are no delays on that front. That, in itself, is a tough ask from Tesla, a company that’s known for production delays.

Still, expect more companies to get in on Tesla’s new semi trucks. Demand is strong at this point, and if the trucks live up to the hype, they can be industry-changing. Reuters is even reporting that after initially asking $5,000 per truck for pre-orders, Tesla has bumped that figure up to around $20,000. That’s a sign that there’s a lot of activity happening on that front.

PostHeaderIcon Budweiser Deliveries Get Electrified: Anheuser-Busch orders 40 Tesla Semis

2019 Tesla Semi

Tesla has been racking up pre-orders for its all-electric Semi truck since its debut in mid-November, with Anheuser-Busch being one of the latest corporations and the first brewer to join the fray. Anheuser-Busch has reportedly ordered 40 Tesla Semis, making the second-largest order in the truck’s short history. Food giant Sysco announced its pre-order of 50 Semis shortly after AB.

“Anheuser-Busch will use the Tesla Semis to deliver Budweiser beer from its brewery locations to wholesalers within a 150- to 200-mile range”

James Sembrot, AB’s senior director of logistics, is quoted on insideevs.com as saying, “At Anheuser-Busch, we are constantly seeking new ways to make our supply chain more sustainable, efficient, and innovative. This investment in Tesla semi-trucks helps us achieve these goals while improving road safety and lowering our environmental impact.”

Anheuser-Busch will use the Tesla Semis to deliver Budweiser beer from its brewery locations to wholesalers within a 150- to 200-mile range, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Teslas will join AB’s fleet of roughly 750 trucks nationwide, which are owned and operated by third-party companies. It’s unknown whether AB will lease the Tesla Semis, outright buy them, or have its third-party companies purchase the trucks.

AB declined to disclose the reservation price of each truck but admits it placed its order long before the Tesla Semi’s debut in November. At that time, deposits were $5,000. Tesla has since raised the price to $20,000 in a response to demand. The Semi’s full price is expected to range from $150,000 to $200,000 when it finally reaches the market in 2019. So far, Tesla has accumulated an estimated 200 pre-orders for the Semi. Naturally, that number is expected to grow as more companies jump on board.

PostHeaderIcon Torque Wars Continue as Ford Boosts Super Duty Power Stroke Torque to 935 Pound-Feet

Because pickup trucks usually carry heavy loads other than their bodies, acceleration is important in getting these vehicles to move. That’s why torque numbers are just as important, maybe even more, as horsepower in this segment. This explains why Ford and Ram have been engaged in a perpetual battle of “can-you-top-this?” with regards to the amount of torque their models can produce. Well, it’s Ford’s turn atop the mountain after the automaker announced that for 2018, the Super Duty line’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 diesel engine packs 450 horsepower and 935 pound-feet of torque, edging out Ram’s 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six turbodiesel engine by five pound-feet of torque.

“The Super Duty line’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 diesel engine packs 450 horsepower and 935 pound-feet of torque”

It’s an incremental gain, but don’t tell that to these two companies. In their minds, any number that puts either of them on top counts as a significant victory. This constant game of one-upmanship between Ford and Ram has been going on for the better part of two years. Remember back in 2015 when Ram’s Cummins engine came out with 865 pound-feet of torque to wrestle the crown away from Ford’s 860-pound-feet torque output? It didn’t take long for the Blue Oval to upgrade its Power Stroke to 925 pound-feet of torque. Ram quickly answered back by boosting the Cummins’ output to 930 pound-feet for its 2017 models. It’s been a year since any response has come from Ford, but now it’s back on top, taking the crown from Ram yet again by the slimmest of margins. All it took was a redesign of a cylinder head and changes in fuel and turbo boost calibration.

Now it’s Ram’s turn to come out with a response. I don’t know how long it’s going to take the Chrysler-owned company to return fire, but you can expect that it’s coming, regardless if it’s tomorrow, next week, next month, or even next year. That’s life in the pickup segment for these two automakers. It’s not the flashiest of competitions, but it sure makes for good entertainment.

Now if only General Motors can catch up…

PostHeaderIcon Stereotype Turned Fact: Trump Supports like Big Trucks; Democrats like Sedans; Liberals like the Toyota Prius

Stanford University put together a study based on millions of images from Google Street View and voting\demographic data to come up with a shocking but expected result: Trump supporters (Republicans) love their big trucks while areas that voted for Hillary (Democrats) have significantly more sedans. And, to top it off, the Toyota Prius is the most popular car in San Francisco – pretty much the liberal capital of the world and one of the smuggest places you can visit. Big surprise here, right?

Stanford’s Pickup Truck and Sedan Study

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 Midnight Edition: Dissecting The Name - image 739905
“The study found that if there are more pickup trucks in a neighborhood, there is an 82-percent chance it voted Republican”

The researchers from Stanford University used an artificial intelligence algorithm (let’s hope that, for the sake of accuracy, it isn’t biased to the left or right) to sift through millions of images from Google Street View, demographic data, and voting data to determine which areas were Republican or Democrat based only on the cars found throughout the city. The study found that if there are more pickup trucks in a neighborhood, there is an 82-percent chance it voted Republican. If there are more sedans, there’s an 88-percent chance it voted Democrat. There’s no specific data on the Toyota Prius aside from it being the most popular vehicle in San Francisco, but it’s been the liberal, save-the-earth, green-car poster car for years now, so do we really even need that data to confirm that truth? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

The whole point of this study was to see what could be done, census-wise, by computer automatically instead of the traditional door-to-door surveys conducted by The American Community Survey, whose canvassing, by the way, costs around $250 million in taxpayer money annually.

“These types of approaches will be most useful in places where it is very expensive to perform a survey based census,” said Timnit Gebru – lead author of the research paper completed at the end of the project. “While the US has many resources to conduct such studies, there are other countries in the world where this is not the case. Using publicly available data could allow countries to understand the distribution of income in different regions or other demographic characteristics,” he continued.

And, while cars were used for this study, they are only one data point that can be used: “While we used cars in this study, what we wanted to show was that such work is possible using publicly available images and computer vision.”

As you can see, there’s a lot more than meets the eye, and it’s not just about political data gathering. A study like this can be used to collect all kinds of data – it’s just funny and provocative that one of the most popular stereotypes since Donald Trump’s election is actually true – go figure.

PostHeaderIcon Nissan Titan AT-M6 Walker

Stars Wars: The Last Jedi is hitting theaters next week, and like in year’s past, Nissan is hitching its wagon on the monolithic movie franchise. We saw the fruits of that partnership last year with the launch of the Nissan Rogue One Edition. This year, Nissan and LucasFilms are upping the ante by launching a whole fleet of Stars Wars-inspired creations, including the vehicle you see here.

This is a Nissan Titan, or at least it was until it was redesigned to look more like one of those giant AT-M6 Walker bots that the First Order deployed against the Resistance in The Force Awakens. The overall look and the details that went into creating the Titan Star Wars is a feast for the senses. We should give credit to Vehicle Effects for making this transformation. The California-based company is famous in Hollywood circles for building some of the best cars to hit the silver screen, including all the vehicles in The Fast and Furious and Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises. In addition to the Titan, Vehicle Effects also created the Nissan Altima Special Forces TIE Fighter, Nissan Maxima Kylo Ren, Nissan Maxima Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer, Nissan Maxima Captain Phasma, Nissan Rogue Poe Dameron’s X-Wing with BB8, and Nissan Rogue Sport A-Wing.

What makes the Nissan Titan Star Wars special

2018 Nissan Titan AT-M6 Walker - image 750470
“The finished product looks incredible, particularly in the way some of its features are in sync with the actual parts from the AT-M6”

With respect to the other Star Wars-inspired Nissan vehicles, the Titan AT-M6 is, without question, the most elaborate creation of the fleet. According to Eric Shimp of Vehicle Effects, most of the materials that were used in this build are made from aluminum. There are also 3D-printed parts, most notably the circuit panels that we can see on the sides of the truck.

The finished product looks incredible, particularly in the way some of its features are in sync with the actual parts from the AT-M6. The hood of the truck features the top end of the walker’s head, right down to the red highlights that represent the windows of the walker. The front bumper of the Titan also gets a pair of proper blasters. Both are flanked by smaller protrusions that resemble the array of artillery that the actual AT-M6 has at its disposal. The rest of the pick-up gets wrapped in the same colors as the AT-M6, complete with black definitions that represent the natural wear-and-tear these walkers get when they’re on the battlefield.

2018 Nissan Titan AT-M6 Walker - image 750464
“The rest of the pick-up gets wrapped in the same colors as the AT-M6, complete with black definitions”

The other significant feature of the Titan AT-M6 is sitting at the back, prominently placed for the whole world to see. For those who don’t know, that part there is the body of the AT-M6, and that satellite dish-looking equipment is actually the megacaliber six cannon from which it gets its name.

As elaborate as the exterior is, the Titan’s interior remains largely in stock form. The only modification in this section is the sound equipment that was installed to help recreate the effects of a stomping AT-M6 Walker. Imagine driving in your neighborhood and seeing this in your rear-view mirror. It’s a cool sight, but also not a pleasant one.

No work was done to improve the Titan’s performance capabilities. I don’t see that as an issue though because if you watched The Force Awakens, you’ll know that these AT-M6 Walkers aren’t exactly known for being fleet-footed. The absence of any power upgrades isn’t a reflection of the kind of work that Vehicle Effects put into this build. In fact, the finished vehicle reportedly weighs around 6,500 pounds. That’s 1,500 pounds in added weight to a pickup that already weighs a little over 5,000 pounds, to begin with.

2018 Nissan Titan AT-M6 Walker - image 750473
“The finished vehicle reportedly weighs around 6,500 pounds”

Don’t expect the Nissan Titan AT-M6 to somehow find itself in the classifieds anytime soon. Like the rest of the The Last Jedi-inspired Nissan models, this creation will be making the rounds of other auto shows through the first quarter of 2018. Even if the movie itself runs its course at that time, there’s no doubt that these cars will still be major attractions.

PostHeaderIcon Devel Sixty

Big trucks are all the rage these days. Not just big, though, really big. The Devel Sixty is the latest six-wheeled monster to the scene and it comes from a company best known for the outlandish, 5000-horsepower Sixteen. The new truck has seating for six people inside its aircraft-like cabin accessed by an aircraft-like door. Devel debuted the Sixty at the recent 2017 Dubai Auto Show, which is a logical place to debut something so illogical.

Detailed specs are few and far between, but Devel does say the Sixty is powered by a 6.7-liter V-8 turbodiesel making 720 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. The Sixty also has military-style wheels with a Central Tire Inflation System that allows for changes in tire pressure on the move. And in low pressure in the knobby tires isn’t enough to blast through mud or sand, the Sixty has a winch at each end for recovery.

Continue reading for more on the Devel Sixty.

Exterior

  • Six massive tires
  • Custom body design
  • Private jet style folding door
  • Two winches
  • Central Tire Inflation System

2018 Devel Sixty - image 749127
“The front looks like nothing we’ve seen before and takes a big departure away from conventional design layouts”

The Devel Sixty looks like something from some cheesy Michael Bay flick. It’s extraterrestrial proportions and menacing black paint give it an ominous, if not villainous appearance. The front looks like nothing we’ve seen before and takes a big departure away from conventional design layouts. The long, boxy body leads to an angular rear end with LED light strips for tail and brake lights. Big D-ring shackles serve as easy recovery points for pulling stranded vehicles to solid ground.

The Sixty rides on Continental MPT 81 tires sized in something over 40 inches tall. They’re mounted on multi-piece beadlock wheels that incorporate the tire inflation system. Ground clearance is best measured in feet.

interior

  • Room for six people
  • Likely finished in high-end materials

2018 Devel Sixteen - image 745560

Note: Devel Sixteen pictured here.

Devel hasn’t shown any interior photos of the Sixty, so the cabin is still a mystery. We do know it seats six people and access is gained via a folding door on the driver’s side reminiscent of a private jet’s door that turns into a staircase. Regardless of the lack of details, expect the interior to be awashed in leather and high-end finishes. This thing isn’t cheap, so its interior will have to match the price tag. Keep reading for that amount.

Drivetrain

  • 6.7-liter V-8 turbodiesel
  • 720 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque
  • Six-wheel drive

2018 Devel Sixty - image 749131
“Powering this beast is a 6.7-liter V-8 turbodiesel making a respectable 720 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque”

Powering this beast is a 6.7-liter V-8 turbodiesel making a respectable 720 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to push this six-wheeled wonder to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds and to a governed top speed of 93 mph. Devel didn’t announce information on the transmission, transfer case, differentials, or where the powertrain is sourced. Our bed is Ford since it makes a 6.7-liter V-8 turbodiesel in the U.S., which conveniently, is also where Devel is based.

Devel does say the Sixty has an independent suspension system and portal axles, but from the photos we see, we’re thinking that might not be true. In fact, the front axle looks suspiciously like the solid front axle on a Ford Super Duty, which is not a portal design. The rear suspension clearly has leaf springs spanning between the two axles, making them not independent.

We hate to say it, but the clues point to the Devel Sixty being nothing more than a rebodied Super Duty with an extra axle added on. After all, only Ford makes a 6.7-liter V-8 turbodiesel and aftermarket tuning kits can easily increase power past 700 horses. We’ve reached out to Devel for clarification.

Pricing

2018 Devel Sixty - image 749128

Big trucks aren’t cheap and the Devel Sixty is no different. It starts at $450,000. Orders will take roughly a year to fulfill and it isn’t clear if Devel has sold any. Since the debut happened in Dubai, though, we’re betting at least a handful were preordered by some oil tycoons.

Competition

Mercedes G63 AMG

2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6X6 - image 494841

Perhaps the most popular 6×6 is Mercedes’ outlandish G63 6×6 it launched for 2014. It’s based on the G-Class and adds another axle under a lengthened chassis. There’s also a cargo bed for hauling all the expendable income somebody must have to buy something so ridiculous – though we’d probably buy one, too, given the chance.

The G63 6×6 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 making 536 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. The Mercedes features portal axles for improved ground clearance without a tall suspension. It also has five differential locks. Add on 37-inch-tall mud tires, and the 6×6 is basically unstoppable – unless you high-center it.

Mercedes is extremely proud of its six-wheeled creation. In 2013, the price was $511,000, but the limited supply of 100 examples has seen pre-owned 6x6s selling for nearly $1 million.

2018 Devel Sixty - image 749130

Devel is known for off-the-wall vehicles, namely the Sixteen concept seen several years ago. Along the Sixty came the new version of the Sixteen, meaning Devel has been busy at the drawing board. The U.S.-based company could position itself as the go-to automaker for all things extreme, should it play its cards right. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out.

  • Leave it
    • Few details at this point
    • $450,000 is expensive
    • Could it be a rebodied Ford Super Duty?

PostHeaderIcon DHL Delivery Service Orders 10 Examples of the Tesla Semi

2019 Tesla Semi

DHL, the worldwide shipping service, has reportedly ordered 10 Tesla Semi trucks. DHL joins big-name companies like Wal-Mart, Ryder, J.B. Hunt, and Loblaws in the early adoption of Tesla’s newest model. The down payment for reserving a Semi is $20,000 – 10-percent of the truck’s full price. And though Tesla has not released its official numbers, roughly 200 trucks have reportedly already been ordered.

DHL told the Wall Street Journal it will use the Tesla Semi for shuttle runs and same-day customer deliveries in major U.S. cities while testing the trucks on long-haul-routes to evaluate driver safety and comfort. Like its other products, the Tesla Semi will offer self-driving capabilities, which should be a big help to truck drivers. Ther’s also an energy-saving “convoy mode” that allows for an autonomously controlled line of closely spaced Semis, which reduces aerodynamic drag on the following trucks.

Tesla says its Semi will travel a minimum of 500 miles on a single charge and have access to Tesla’s planned network of charging stations called Mega Chargers. The powerful electric motors will outgun current turbodiesel trucks, too. It has a claimed 0-to-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds when empty and only 20 seconds when loaded with a full 80,000 pounds. Climbing and descending hilly terrain will also be easier and safer, as well.

Though this is Tesla’s first swing into the 18-wheeler market, the California company has been working with DHL and other potential customers over the last year to offer feedback on prototype trucks. Needless to say, a mistake in this segment would be terribly costly for all involved.

PostHeaderIcon 2019 Jeep Scrambler Spotted On The Road

It’s no secret Jeep is developing a pickup version of its next-generation Wrangler SUV. We’ve seen countless test mules and pre-production examples driving around, but this might be out best look yet. A YouTuber caught this one on video from mere feet as the pair was stuck in rain-soaked traffic.

The camouflage is almost not needed at this point, since Jeep has already released photos of the two- and four-door Wranglers. The only parts in question are behind the B-pillar. It’s unknown how Jeep has designed the transition between cab and bed, what the rear fenders will look like, or how the rear bumper lines up with the bodywork. On that note, this video shows the Scrambler’s rear bumper hanging well below the cargo bed. It actually looks like a Ram 1500’s bumper, but with D-ring shackles like on the Hummer H2. Jeep will have to rework this transition for the production version.

The Scrambler will share most its parts with the Wrangler Unlimited, including its four removable doors, powertrain options, solid axles, and overall design ahead of the cargo bed. The 2.0-liter turbo-four isn’t expected in the Scrambler, leaving the 3.6-liter V-6 and 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 as the two choices. Jeep would be wise to offer the six-speed manual transmission with both engines, too. We know the eight-speed automatic will be offered, as well.

Differences from the Wrangler will include a unique hard top that is hopefully removable, a lengthened frame and wheelbase, and the obvious addition of the bed. We expect to see the Wrangler’s trim levels carry over to the Scrambler, too, including the Rubicon, but new trim lines might debut.

PostHeaderIcon GMC Sierra 2500HD All Mountain Concept

About the best means of transportation on snow-covered mountain trails is a Snowcat – those machines that cross between a tank and snowmobile. The only problem is luxury or that vast lack thereof. Well, GMC now has an answer for this frigid conundrum. Meet the 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD All Mountain Concept.

This one-off monster is basically a Sierra 2500 with a ton of upgrades, but its foundation is familiar. The truck runs the new-for-2017 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8 with a stump-pulling 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. The Alison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission and two-speed transfer case are responsible for shifting gears while five people can ride in the leather-lined crew cab. Naturally, GMC started the concept build with a Sierra Denali, meaning nearly every available feature and amenity comes standard. Oh, and of course heated seats and a heated steering wheel are included.

Keep reading for the rest of GMC’s upgrades.

What makes the GMC Sierra 2500HD All Mountain Concept special

“The large inner wheel turns the rubber tracks while smaller caster wheels contour to the ground while keeping the track tight”

Quite obviously, those treads are the biggest change to this 2018 Sierra 2500HD Denali. They’re from a company called Mattracks and chances are good you’ve heard of them and seen their tracks before. This particular setup is Mattracks’ 150 Series Tracks and have that added touch of GMC red, matching the GMC logo. The Mattracks bolt right to the truck’s hubs. The large inner wheel turns the rubber tracks while smaller caster wheels contour to the ground while keeping the track tight. The extra wide and long footprint provide all the traction needed to scale slippery slopes.

The 2018 Sierra 2500HD Denali is also fitted with the All Terrain X suspension upgrade available from the factory. This includes shocks and springs tuned for off-roading while still capable of hauling 2,513 pounds in the bed or towing up to 13,500 pounds on a fifth-wheel hitch. Just don’t expect to be towing with those Mattracks. The All Terrain X package also adds the front bumper guard, the bed-mounted sports bar, and tubular side steps.

Other upgrades include the custom body wrap with loud graphics, LED off-road lights that illuminate the undercarriage, a 30-inch LED light bar for better forward visibility, Thule snowboard racks, and a soft tonneau cover that rolls up for access to the cargo bed. Inside the cab, the stereo system has been upgraded with an amp and a Dual Pod Speaker kit from Kicker.

GMC built this rig in conjunction with Vail Resorts; a big-time report company focused on mountain and ski getaways. The truck will be on display at Vail Mountain in Vail, Colorado through this winter season.

What do you think? Would you like to power through some powder at the local ski slopes? Let us know in the comments below.

PostHeaderIcon Tesla Announces Pricing for the Semi; Raises Deposit to $20,000

500-mile range towing 80,000 pounds

Tesla has announced pricing for its new Semi truck and has increased the amount of the initial down payment as well. The down payment for a new truck is now $20,000, $15,000 more than Musk previously promised. And, that’s just for the base model, which has an “expected” price of $150,000 with 300 miles range per charge. Move up to the 500-mile-range model, and you’ll have to pony up an “expected” price of $180,000 with down payment of at least $20,000 if not more. Finally, the Founders Edition Semi will have an “estimated” price of $200,000 and requires a $200,000 deposit up front at the time of reservation. These prices are current as of November 22, 2017, but are for the U.S. market and will likely vary depending on the international market.

Along with the release of this information, Tesla as released some additional information about the Semi. Keep reading to find out more.

Tesla Semi Specifications

2019 Tesla Semi - image 746085
“According to Tesla, the new battery-powered Semi can manage to hit 60 mph in as little as 20 seconds while pulling an 80,000-pound load”

According to Tesla, the new battery-powered Semi can manage to hit 60 mph in as little as 20 seconds while pulling an 80,000-pound load behind it and can manage to chug up a five-percent grade at 65 mph. The Powertrain consists of four electric motors, two on each rear axle while energy consumption is less than 2 kWh per mile. That figure, according to Tesla, means the Semi will have a range of 300 miles in base form or 500 miles if you go with the upgraded model. The Founder’s Series model should carry the same range and energy consumption but should feature a couple of extras over the base model. Tesla claims a fuel savings of $200,000+, but that doesn’t account for the fact that there will be waiting in-between charges – charging time that has yet to be announced, by the way.

This sounds good and all, for a local or regional truck, anyway. For something that you’re planning to drive on the national level, however, it seems as if the Tesla Semi will be inadequate unless it can suck up a full charge in a matter of 30 minutes. Tesla could offer up a solution with a trailer that houses extra batteries, but with the Semi not likely to hit production until 2019, at the earliest, I wouldn’t expect to see that before 2023.
