PostHeaderIcon Ram Recalling 228,508 Trucks For Brake-Shifter Interlock Failure

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is voluntarily recalling roughly 228,508 Ram 1500 and Heavy Duty pickups due to an issue with the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock on trucks with a column-mounted shifter. The system keeps the shift level from leaving Park without the vehicle’s key in the ignition and the brake pedal depressed.

The problem occurs when the BTSI system overheats, potentially occurring when the brake pedal is held for an extended time while the transmission is in Park. Once overheated, the BTSI system fails to keep the shift lever in Park without the brake depressed and ignition on. This means the at even without the key inserted, the truck could be shifted into gear or neutral, causing an unintentional roll-away.

“FCA’s voluntary recall covers 180,975 Ram trucks in the U.S., 42,045 trucks in Canada, 4,066 trucks in Mexico, and another 1,422 in locations around the globe”

FCA’s voluntary recall covers 180,975 Ram trucks in the U.S., 42,045 trucks in Canada, 4,066 trucks in Mexico, and another 1,422 in locations around the globe. Thankfully, no injuries or accidents have been reported due to the BTSI issue.

The majority of truck affected by the recall are 2017-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, and certain 2017-2018 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs. There are also a number of 2017-2018 Ram 3500 chassis cabs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of less than 10,000 lbs. To a lesser extent, a certain 2017-2018 Ram 1500 pickups are also included in the recall campaign, but FCA says heavy-duty trucks represent the majority of affected vehicles.

As with any recall, the automaker will repair the issue at no cost to the owner.

Ram’s Previous BTSI Recall

Ram Recalling 228,508 Trucks For Brake-Shifter Interlock Failure - image 513188

Ram’s February recall of BTSI systems in 2017-2018 trucks follows a similar recall in December for trucks from the 2010 – 2017 model year. They include the same group of Ram Heavy Duty trucks and a small number of Ram 1500 trucks, all equipped with the column-mounted gear shifter.

The recall included roughly 1.48 million trucks in the U.S., 249,520 trucks in Canada, 42,747 trucks in Mexico, and roughly 14,950 trucks outside the NAFTA region. Unfortunately, as of December 2017, FCA was aware of seven “potentially related” injuries and a “small number of potentially related accidents” with the BTSI in question.

All new vehicles manufactured after September 1, 2010 are required to have a BTSI.

PostHeaderIcon How We’d Spec It: 2019 Ram 1500

Ram has made a massive splash in the half-ton pickup segment with its all-new 2019 Ram 1500. It debuted at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show in January and is expected to arrive in showrooms by the end of the first quarter. That’s an impressively quick turn-around time as this processes normally takes six months to a year with most vehicles. Nevertheless, we’re restless to get our hands on the pickup.

In the meantime, we’re left dreaming of the ideal build configuration for an average American. Modern pickups offer literally thousands of possible cab, bed, engine, and trim combinations. Here, we’re shooting for that middle-class family who might tow a small boat to the lake on the weekends, haul sports equipment in the bed, and carry those 2.5 kids to their various extracurricular actives – all while staying within a reasonable budget.

The Configuration

How We'd Spec It: 2019 Ram 1500 - image 769590
“Crew Cab pickups are extremely popular these days and for good reason”

Crew Cab pickups are extremely popular these days and for good reason. They offer room for five to six people, have rear seats that fold away for storage of larger items, and still have a large enough cargo bed for most users. As such, we’d definitely opt for the Crew Cab for this build.

As for trim level, we’d opt for the Laramie. It lands slightly above average in the scale of trims, offering more standard equipment than the Big Horn but less than the Western-themed Laramie Longhorn and the range-topping Platinum. For those with a slightly more conservative budget, the Big Horn would still work nicely.

And speaking of price, this comparison will unfortunately not include MSRPs or package pricing. That’s because Ram hasn’t released the numbers as of this writing. Nevertheless, we can guesstimate the final price based on the outgoing 2018 model.

Exterior

“In addition to the Crew Cab configuration and five-foot, seven-inch cargo bed, we’d also opt for the incredibly handy RamBox system”

In addition to the Crew Cab configuration and five-foot, seven-inch cargo bed, we’d also opt for the incredibly handy RamBox system. The integrated storage boxes are watertight, lockable in conjunction with the doors, illuminated inside, and have a drain plug for evacuating water after they’ve been used as a cooler.

The Laramie trim comes standard with 18-inch aluminum wheels, which are just fine. On top of that, we’d pick Blue Streak Pearl as the paint color, just as something a bit more exciting than gray, black, or white.

Interior

How We'd Spec It: 2019 Ram 1500 - image 769602
“Ram has two big option packages for the Laramie: the Level 1 and Level 2 Equipment Groups.”

The Laramie trim level comes standard with leather seats with a front bench seat. This means there is room for six people, which for some families, is a necessity. For those who would rather have the extra storage space, Ram has the front bucket option. The integrated center console that accompanied the bucket seats has space for hanging file folders, cup and coin holders, and even an optional wireless phone charger.

Ram has two big option packages for the Laramie: the Level 1 and Level 2 Equipment Groups. Level 1 adds things like automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a remote tailgate release, and a CD Player.

Level 2 adds even more goodies like a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, heated second-row seats, a rear under-seat storage compartment, the wireless phone charger, and the lovely 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system with navigation. Naturally, Level 2 also includes all the features in the Level 1 package.

Drivetrain

How We'd Spec It: 2019 Ram 1500 - image 769591
“The 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie will initially be available with only the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8.”

The 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie will initially be available with only the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. That’s fine with us since the engine kicks out an impressive 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Better still, customers can also get the Hemi with Ram’s new eTorque system, the mild-hybrid addition that helps with low-end power while offering an improvement in fuel economy.

The standard transmission is the new, next-generation TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic. Customers do have a choice between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Since most people never venture off the pavement, we’d stick with rear-wheel drive and save on fuel economy and the initial purchase price.

Ram offers three rear axle ratios: the standard 3.21, a 3.55, and a 3.92. We’d stick with the 3.21 since towing and drag racing aren’t on the agenda. This ratio will also greatly help with fuel economy. We would, however, spend the extra money on the Anti-Spin differential. This will help with all-weather traction. Last but not least, we’d opt for the 33-gallon fuel tank, which gives the Ram an impressive cruising range.

To save on cost, we’d skip the four-corner air suspension option.

Pricing

How We'd Spec It: 2019 Ram 1500 - image 769603

Like we mentioned, Ram has not announced pricing for the 2019 model. So, in order to get an understanding of how much out specific configuration might cost, we’re looking at the outgoing model from 2018.

Configured with the same cab, bed, and drive type, the 2018 model starts at $42,095. Upgrading from the 3.6-liter V-6 to the 5.7-liter V-8 costs $1,450, though that cost might be baked into the 2019 model since the 3.6-liter doesn’t appear to be available. The Anti-Spin Differential is a $435 upgrade, the up-sized fuel tank costs $405, the Convenience Group adds $545, and the RamBox another $1,295.

On the inside, the removing the front bench seats for the buckets costs $695, while getting navigation programmed on the 8.4-inch Uconnect system costs another $795. Ram charges $345 for the CD player – something that comes included in the 2019’s Level 1 Equipment package.

The total price comes to $49,955, including the options and Ram’s $1,395 destination fee. Now, according to Ram’s Build And Price website, there is $7,500 in discounts on the 2018 model, which brings the price back down to $42,455. Of course, we don’t expect to see such hefty discounts in the first few years of the new Ram’s lifecycle, so the final price will likely be higher. Add to that the inevitable increase in price Ram will charge for the new truck.

Conclusion

How We'd Spec It: 2019 Ram 1500 - image 769600

While not cheap by any means, this configuration offers the best of both worlds – swanky tech, leather seats, a powerful V-8, and tons of interior space while not cresting beyond the $50,000 mark.

What do you think of this build? What would you do differently? Let us know in the comments.

PostHeaderIcon Ram 1500 By Mopar

It’s been just a month since Ram debuted the brand-new 1500 pickup truck at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and FCA is already offering a wide range of aftermarket parts and accessories. Showcased on a concept truck at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, these new accessories cover everything from the exterior and interior to the drivetrain and the chassis. Most of them will become available in a few months, so you can start planning a Moparized model if you’re not happy with the standard and optional Ram features.

Described as an “outdoor, sport-themed truck,” this Mopar-specced vehicle sports a unique, slightly more aggressive exterior, a more upscale interior, and lift kit that turns it into a more capable off-road explorer. The parts and accessories are taken from a list of around 200 items that can be purchased from Mopar via FCA dealerships. That’s quite a big selection, unlike anything you get from the competition. Let’s have a closer look at some of these features in the review below.

  • 35-inch off-road tires
  • Black stripes
  • Blacked-out badges

“The biggest change lies below the bodywork, in the form of 18-inch wheels wrapped in massive, 35-inch tires”

The new Ram 1500 looks surprisingly boxy. At least compared to the outgoing model. Not that I have a problem with that, but it feels as if the new 1500 blends in with the other trucks easier than before, and I used to Ram being a bit unique. The good news is that the new Mopar parts work great with the truck’s new design. Based on the Big Horn Sport model, the show car is finished in Flame Red, a color that already gives it a sporty look. Granted, the biggest change lies below the bodywork, in the form of 18-inch wheels wrapped in massive, 35-inch tires.

The red paint is combined with black accents here and there. There are black stripes on the engine hood, blacked-out emblems and badges all over the place, and black wheelarch trim. The truck is also equipped with body-length Mopar off-road cast aluminum running boards, which add both visual appeal and functionality. A skid-resistant stepping surface offers better grip in muddy or wet conditions.

“The front and rear seats are wrapped in black Katzkin leather, and feature Rebel Red stitching”

Finally, the concept features the unique Ram Rack first showcased as prototype part on the Ram Macho Power Wagon at the 2016 SEMA. Set to become available this year, the rack is adjustable, can slide all the way up to the front section, and mounts to the available production bed rails. A Mopar bed step makes loading stuff easier.

The interior standard out by means of added premium features and a color layout that matches the exterior. The front and rear seats are wrapped in black Katzkin leather, and feature Rebel Red stitching and logos on their seatbacks. The same stitching adds a splash of color to the door panels and center console. The new all-weather floor mats with Ram’s head logo have deeper channels and higher, more rigid side walls to contain water and debris. Now that’s one feature that helps keep the cabin clean. Finally, the doors sill guards are now made from brushed aluminum and have “RAM” lettering.

2019 Ram 1500 By Mopar - image 767471
“The Mopar Ram Airflow cold-air intake system feeds a steady flow of air into the engine”

The Mopar package doesn’t alter the engine. In this case, the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 remains standard and generates the same 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. The only improvements here are the Mopar Ram Airflow cold-air intake system that feeds a steady flow of air into the engine and the performance cat-back exhaust. The latter is made from stainless steel and have bigger, five-inch tips for an aggressive look.

The truck benefits from a two-inch lift kit for additional off-road clearance. The lift also enables the 1500 to accommodate the oversized tires and six-lug rims. The black wheel flares provide additional protection against trail hazards.

Most of these parts and accessories will become available to customers in the coming months.

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 hasn’t even hit showrooms yet, and Ram is already rolling out the special editions. Just this week saw the new iteration of the Texas-inspired Lone Star edition. But now, it’s Canada’s turn. Ram is launching a Canada-only trim called the Sport.

Continue reading for more on the 2019 Ram 1500 Sport.

What makes the 2019 Ram 1500 Sport special

2019 Ram 1500 Sport - image 768778
“The Sport name isn’t new to Ram; it’s had the trim around for several years.”

The Sport name isn’t new to Ram; it’s had the trim around for several years. What’s new, though, is its application on the new 2019 Ram 1500, codenamed DT. The truck gets several Canada-specific features that help it stand out in the land up north. Of course, the Sport edition gets all the new technology and features packed into the 2019 Ram truck.

The Ram 1500 Sport will come in both Quad Cab and Crew Cab versions. On the outside, the truck has a monochromatic theme with body-colored bumpers, mirror caps, and grille surround. Aside from the machined faces on the 21-inch and optional 22-inch wheels, there is no chrome on the truck. Nine different colors are offered. As for the wheels, this marks the first time Ram has offered 22-inch wheels on 4WD models.

Accenting the monochromatic appearance are black accents. This includes the grille louvers and R-A-M logo, the badge on the front doors, the Ram’s Head logo on the tailgate, and the identifying Sport badge near the rear bumper.

2019 Ram 1500 Sport - image 768777
“The Sport comes standard with bi-LED headlights with blacked out internal bezels.”

The Sport comes standard with bi-LED headlights with blacked out internal bezels. LED daytime running lights add function and form thanks to their distinctive shape. LED fog lights are present, too.

For those wanting an even sportier look, Ram is offering an optional Sport hood with heat extractors and a rear louver. It’s the same hood that’s found on the Ram 1500 Rebel.

Speaking of the Rebel, the Sport borrows some interior features, as well. The “light black chrome highlights, real metal trim, and a diamond plate-look” on the center stack is a shared piece. The rest of the interior trim, however, is mostly unique to the Sport. The black interior boasts soft-touch materials on the dash and gauge cluster hood accented with Diesel Gray contrast stitching. The upper glove box on the passenger side gets a Sport badge to signify the trim level.

2019 Ram 1500 Sport - image 768774
“The Ram 1500 Sport comes standard with cloth and premium vinyl seats with both power adjustments and three-way heating”

The Ram 1500 Sport comes standard with cloth and premium vinyl seats with both power adjustments and three-way heating. For those who want something more upscale, Ram offers full leather seating with both heat and ventilation. The leather seats also come with an embossed texture that’s unique to the Sport. For an even more extravagant touch, Ram’s new dual-pane sunroof is offered on Crew Cab models.

Regardless of the seat choice, the Ram 1500 Sport gets power-adjustable pedals, a CD player, a heated steering wheel, and front bucket seats with the large center console. Ram’s 7.0-inch Uconnect infotainment system comes standard, but the 8.4-inch system is optional. The massive 12-inch screen isn’t available, however. Nevertheless, both the 7.0 and 8.4 Uconnect systems include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a full-color touchscreen.

Powering all this leather and glass down Canada’s snow-covered highways is the venerable 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Ram makes no mention of it, but the optional eTorque mild hybrid system is likely available on the Sport. Either way, the V-8 kicks out 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. The next-generation TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard, as does rear-wheel drive. 4WD is optional. Our guess is the Ram 1500 Sport’s build numbers will skew heavily towards the 4WD, given Canada’s propensity for massive amounts of snow.

“Hockey moms will be thankful, then, that the 2019 Ram 1500 comes standard with a slew of safety features”

Hockey moms will be thankful, then, that the 2019 Ram 1500 comes standard with a slew of safety features. They include the ParkView backup camera, brake assist, hill start assist, rainy day braking, ready alert braking, and trailer sway control. Optionally, the Advanced Safety Group adds blind-spot monitoring with trailer detection, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with stop, lane departure warning, 360-degree surround view camera, automatic high beams, and the ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist.

Ram hasn’t announced pricing for the 2019 Ram 1500 Sport (or any other trim level), but the Sport will arrive in Canadian showrooms beginning in the second quarter of 2018. That’s not far off, and the order books are already open.

PostHeaderIcon Ram-Texas Love Affair Continues with the Texas-Only 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star Edition

Back in 2002, Ram introduced the Ram Lone Star Edition as a tribute to Texas. It was described as the first truck designed by Texans and built specifically for Texans. Fast forward 16 years later and the pickup brand is launching another ode to the Lone Star State with a new version of the Ram 1500 Lone Star Edition. The special edition model was introduced at the Dallas Auto Show, and if it lives up to the success of its predecessor, we’re going to be seeing a lot of these Lone Star Editions in the heart of Texas.

“In Texas Ram has sold more than 250,000 units of these Texas-only models since the first version was launched in 2002”

The Ram 1500 Lone Star Edition is no joke, folks. It’s arguably one of the most important special edition Rams in history, particularly in Texas where Ram has sold more than 250,000 units of these Texas-only models since the first version was launched in 2002. It certainly goes without saying that the new Ram 1500 Lone Star Edition has some enormous shoes to fill.

Fortunately, it looks like it has nice cowboy boots of its own. The 2019 Lone Star Edition features a good amount of standard equipment. On the outside, the truck receives front and rear bumpers, chrome door handle centers, fog lamps, and a bright grille surround with billet inserts. The whole ride sits on a set of 18-inch aluminum wheels. Step inside the cabin, and you’ll see a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and a 60/40 split rear bench seat.

The upgrades aren’t fancy, but they do get the job done in giving the Lone Star Edition a distinct look compared to the standard versions of the truck. Besides, if you’re not feeling the new bits, you can appreciate that the special edition truck is also eligible to get “Sport” and “Black” appearance packages. Likewise, there are four interior trim levels available, including the choice of getting a six-passenger bench front or five-passenger bucket seats in the event you’re feeling a little sporty. Speaking of options, you can get from a long list of functional add-ons for your truck There’s a Bed Utility Group, a 4×4 Off-road Group, a Protection Group, Trailer Tow Mirrors and Brake Group, and a Max Towing Package and Premium Lighting Group.

“The truck will become available in Texas in the first quarter of 2018”

Ram has yet to announce the pricing details for the 1500 Lone Star Edition. It did say that the truck will become available in Texas in the first quarter of 2018. Given that the standard Ram 1500 starts at $27,095, it’s fair to say that you’re going to have pay around $35,000 to $40,000 for the 1500 Ram Lone Star Edition. It’s not cheap, but it’s still cheaper than the 1500 Laramie Longhorn, the other special edition 1500 truck that Ram introduced a few weeks.

Unlike the 1500 Lone Star’s focus on improving the truck’s functionality and go-anywhere credentials, the Laramie Longhorn offers more premium upgrades like real barn wood accent trim, full leather seats with contrast piping, and brushed-nickel badging and accent trim. In other words, they’re upgrades that a lot of Texans are probably allergic to.

It’s fitting, then, that the 1500 Lone Star is going to a state where vanity isn’t a top priority. Down there, deep in the heart of Texas, it’s all about strapping those boots and getting dirty. That’s why the 1500 Lone Star Edition is built for Texas. They’re made for each other.

PostHeaderIcon Butthurt Alert: Ram Superbowl Commercial Sparks Outrage

As expected, Super Bowl LII had its fair share of commercials. There were some good ones, and there were some bad ones. None of them, though, were as controversial as the Ram commercial that used a portion of Martin Luther King Jr’s speech. To say that it wasn’t well-received would be an understatement. It was panned, criticized, and obliterated for using the speech as a means to sell Ram trucks, a clear misinterpretation of the actual message of King’s speech. But given what we’ve come to know since, was it really a case of insensitivity on Ram’s part or was it all a big misunderstanding of the ad’s real purpose?

I understand the initial negative response towards the commercial. I found it a little too self-serving myself, not because I thought Ram was intentionally using the message of King’s speech in a bad light, but because it was doing it — indirectly, at least — to peddle its products.

It’s come to light since the ad drew backlash that the Estate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., through its manager, Eric D. Tidwell, made the decision to allow King’s sermon to be used in the ad. “When Ram approached the King Estate with the idea of featuring Dr. King’s voice in a new ‘Built To Serve’ commercial, we were pleasantly surprised at the existence of the Ram Nation volunteers and their efforts,” Tidwell said in a statement to The Washington Post.

“We found that the overall message of the ad embodied Dr. King’s philosophy that true greatness is achieved by serving others,” Tidwell added.

Unfortunately, the King Center, which was founded by his wife, Coretta Scott, tweeted that center and its chief executive, Bernice King, the youngest of King’s children, did not approve the use of King’s speech in the commercial. “Neither @TheKingCenter nor @BerniceKing is the entity that approves the use of #MLK’s words or imagery for use in merchandise, entertainment (movies, music, artwork, etc) or advertisement, including tonight’s @Dodge #SuperBowl commercial,” the tweet said.

Clearly, someone from King’s side dropped the ball there. If the estate gave the go-signal to use the speech, why wasn’t his family notified of the decision?

For its part, FCA defended the commercial, saying that it “worked closely with the representatives of the Martin Luther King Jr. estate to receive the necessary approvals and estate representatives were a very important part of the creative process every step of the way.”

Regardless of what you think, the commercial will live in infamy now, even if it probably wasn’t the intention.

PostHeaderIcon All-New Ram 1500 Gets the Full Mopar Treatment

It’s been a busy 2018 for the all-new Ram 1500, hasn’t it? In the six weeks that we’ve had of 2018, we’ve seen the Ram 1500 make its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show, star in the most controversial ad in Super Bowl LII, and get decked out in full Mopar garb. The last of these happenings took place at the Chicago Auto Show where Ram and Mopar showed off the many ways you can customize your Ram 1500. From expected accessories to those that aren’t available on the market yet, there are over 200 Mopar accessories available for the Ram’s new heavy-duty pickup.

All-New Ram 1500 Gets the Full Mopar Treatment - image 766759
“The most obvious place to begin is the two-inch lift kit. It’s a modest increase, but it does provide extra clearance for the pickup”

Where do I even start? The most obvious place to begin is the two-inch lift kit. It’s a modest increase, but it does provide extra clearance for the pickup. That clearance will be useful if you want to go big with those 35-inch tires. The rubbers are wrapped around 18-inch Mopar wheels that are beadlock-capable. This means that the tires stay attached to the rims like a clingy spouse even when they’re aired down to lower pressures. Mopar’s also giving the Ram 1500 fender flares and full-length off-road cast aluminum running boards to further showcase its rough and rugged appearance.

Open the doors to the pickup’s interior and you’ll be greeted by a cabin that’s dressed in premium black Katzkin leather seats with matching Rebel Red stitching on the seats, door trim, and center console. The same stitching is also used on the Ram head logo on the seatbacks. The cabin also claims brushed aluminum door sill guards and Mopar all-weather floormats with higher sidewalls and deeper channels as its own.

“Mopar’s also giving the Ram 1500 fender flares and full-length off-road cast aluminum running boards”

Move to the pickup’s bed and you’ll see an item that technically isn’t available yet. It’s a lifestyle Ram Rack that can be mounted to utility rails that are already in place in the bed. We first saw this equipment at the 2017 SEMA Auto Show and while it’s still not available today, the company said that it’s arriving in the “near future.” I suppose that estimate isn’t that long for a piece of equipment that will offer plenty of use to future owners.

Speaking of components that aren’t available yet, the new Ram Airflow cold-air intake is also coming in the “near future.” Unlike the Ram Rack, the new cold-air intake is all about working in concert with the pickup’s 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine. The system is also versatile enough that it can work on any hood application, provided that the Hemi V-8 is sitting in the engine bay. It’s also designed to work seamlessly with a Mopar performance exhaust system. Ram didn’t say if the cold-air intake is capable of adding more power to the Hemi.

As extensive as the showcase upgrades are on the Flame Red 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn Sport 4×4 that’s sitting in Chicago, those components are just a handful of Mopar’s entire catalog for the all-new pickup. Makes you wonder then what the 1500 will look like if all available Mopar components are added to it. I don’t think it’s possible because there’s bound to be some overlap, but I’d like to see somebody give it a go.

PostHeaderIcon FCA Showcase Mopar Accessories for 2019 Ram 1500 in Chicago

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 pickup hasn’t been debuted more than a month but Mopar already has accessories ready for the truck’s launch into showrooms. The long list includes wheels, tires, side steps, bed-mounted storage racks, and even performance accessories.

Mopar, Chrysler’s famed parts and accessories division that dates back to the 1920s, worked in-house with Ram’s engineers and designers to develop the accessories to work with the truck. Customers can buy the parts alongside their pickup at any Ram dealership and have them installed before final delivery with the price rolled into the vehicle financing. Best of all, the parts and accessories are covered under the Ram’s warranty. And since accessories like the high-flow air intake and cat-back exhaust are designed and installed by Ram, they do not void the truck’s warranty.

Of course, we’ve seen Mopar do this before. The most recent example is the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL. Mopar showcased over 200 parts at the 2017 SEMA show weeks before Jeep officially debut the Wrangler JL.

“The truck was fitted with a two-inch suspension lift, 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires on 18-inch faux beadlock wheels”

Ram displayed several of Mopar’s 200-plus accessories on a Flame Red 1500-series Big Horn 4WD truck at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show. The truck was fitted with a two-inch suspension lift, 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires on 18-inch faux beadlock wheels, black fender flares, and black aluminum running boards not too dissimilar from the Ford F-150 Raptor’s.

Adding to the functionality is the “Ram Rack” cargo system. The slidable hoops mount to the inside of the bed rails and will carry extra large items like kayaks and cargo baskets. Other exterior upgrades include a fold-out step under the rear bumper for easy access to the bed and racing stripes that accent the 2019 Ram’s new hood design.

“Performance wise, Mopar is offering a cold-air intake and stainless steel cat-back exhaust for the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8.”

Inside the truck, Mopar fitted the interior with Katskin leather with red contrast stitching and the Ram’s Head logo. All-weather rubber floor mats protect the carpet from getting soaked with wet shoes or stained from muddy boots.

Performance wise, Mopar is offering a cold-air intake and stainless steel cat-back exhaust for the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. No performance gains were specified, but the extra airflow will certainly add to the Hemi’s 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Interestingly, the cold-air intake shaped so it fits within the “power dome” of the Ram’s new hood. It looks really slick. The cat-back dual exhaust is also form-fitted to match the cutouts in the rear bumper.

The 2019 Ram 1500 is expected to arrive in showrooms by the end of Q1 2018, so we won’t have to wait long. Best of all, these Mopar accessories will be available on day one of sales.

One thing that was sure to make you happy either way was the various car commercials that debuted during the game. There was certainly something for everyone, like the Lamborghini Monster ad for supercar freaks or, if you’re into Offroad, the Jeep commercials. Hell, the Ram commercials hit us right in the feels on a number of levels. Needless to say, if you didn’t watch the game, you should probably catch up on all of the car commercials. They didn’t all have the pizzazz that we’ve come to love from the past, but they are all worth their weight, that’s for sure. So, with that said, we’ve compiled them all down below. PostHeaderIcon Ram 1500 Super Bowl LII Ad Takes Subtle Shot at Minnesota Vikings

There’s something to be said for a commercial that nails it with the subtlest of hints. I’ll submit this ad for the new 2019 Ram 1500 pickup as a perfect example of that. The theme of the ad centers around a group of Icelandic Vikings who make the trip to Minnesota from Iceland to watch Super Bowl LII, presumably because they thought the Minnesota Vikings were actually playing in it. From there, hilarity — and a fitting closing tagline — ensues.

The ad itself has a lot of authenticity to it because it was shot in Iceland. The commercial starts off with a Viking driving the Ram 1500 and picking up his buddies for the long row from Iceland to Minneapolis. An uptempo cut of Queen’s song, “We Will Rock You” sets the stage for the commercial, which cuts to the Vikings in a longship, rowing to Minneapolis with the Ram 1500 in tow. Once they hit land, the rambunctious group make the drive to Minneapolis, only to find out through the radio that the Vikes of Minnesota aren’t playing in “tonight’s matchup.” (FYI, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC title game on their way to beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII).

Dejected, the suddenly forlorn group of Vikings make a U-turn back to their longship where they once again sing their rousing rendition of Queen’s hit song. That’s when the voice-over comes in with a perfectly placed tagline, calling the Ram 1500 as a pickup that’s “built for the unexpected.”

It’s a tremendous exclamation point to a fantastic commercial from Ram.

PostHeaderIcon The new Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn is a Cowboy’s Dream of Luxury Come True

After a long day of riding hawses on the range and ropin’ dogies, a cowboy likes to kick his boots off and sit a spell. Well, Ram now has a pretty good place to relax. The new 2019 Ram 1500 is completely new, and with it comes a revised and upgraded version of the Laramie Longhorn trim.

The new Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn is a Cowboy's Dream of Luxury Come True - image 763507

The high-class Laramie Longhorn places second only to the Limited in Ram’s trim level lineup. The trim brings a two-tone paint scheme and 20-inch or optional 22-inch wheels to the outside and an interior filled with full-grain leather, real metal, and open-pore wood. Outside of a luxury sedan or SUV, the Ram’s new interior is about as swanky as it gets.

Interior equipment includes the new 12-inch Uconnect screen, an upgraded center console with covered storage bins, and seats that boast both heating and venting in all outboard positions. The 2019 Ram 1500 is the first pickup to offer vented rear seats. Ram’s rear seats also recline, too, for a completely relaxed ride. Legroom and headroom are nothing short of limousine level.

Smaller details include leather seatback pockets with metal buckles, brushed-nickel metal badges with the Laramie Longhorn logo, and a branded Laramie Longhorn logo seared into the passenger side’s wood dash trim. For the connected cowboys, the Ram has 4G LTE Wi-Fi, five USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM radio. A 360-degree camera system is also present. Once the sun goes down, the cabin floods with ambient light.

“The trim brings a two-tone paint scheme and 20-inch or optional 22-inch wheels to the outside and an interior filled with full-grain leather, real metal, and open-pore wood”

Like the other trim levels in the 2019 Ram 1500 lineup, the Laramie Longhorn’s available 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 can be had with the new mild hybrid system. The system replaces the alternator with a motor-generator and includes a 48-volt battery pack mounted to the cab’s rear bulkhead. During low-speed acceleration, the motor-generator helps turn the crankshaft via the accessory belt. Though it doesn’t help top-end power or torque, the system saves fuel at lower speeds and helps give the truck extra torque off the line. An upgraded eight-speed automatic comes standard and is controlled by an updated rotary shifter on the dash.

The 2019 Ram 1500 will go on sale by the end of Q1 2018. Prices have not been announced, but expect the Laramie Longhorn to increase in price over last years’ model, which held a base MSRP of $49,670.

PostHeaderIcon Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Edition

Ram has introduced the Laramie Longhorn trim level on its all-new 2019 Ram 1500 pickup. Like on the outgoing truck, the Laramie Longhorn is western-themed luxury trim filled with high-end materials. However, thanks to the vast improvements made on the 2019 Ram 1500, the Laramie Longhorn trim sees equally impressive advancements.

Designed to compete against the Ford F-150’s King Ranch and the Chevrolet Silverado’s High Country trims, the Laramie Longhorn goes above and beyond with real barn wood accent trim, full leather seats with contrast piping, brushed-nickel badging and accent trim, and Ram’s new 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen engulfing the dashboard. There is even the Laramie Longhorn badge branded into the wood trim above the glovebox – branded, like with a hot iron. That attention to detail continues through the cabin and onto the exterior.

What Makes the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Edition Special?

“Ram’s interior designer, Ryan Negode, took inspiration from antique pocket watches, hand-tooled leather cowboy boots, and a horseman’s saddle”

According to the head of Ram, Mike Manley, “The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn is a no-compromise luxury truck that delivers what buyers want most: strength, durability, technology, and efficiency. Wherever you look, whatever you touch, the Laramie Longhorn is filled with more craftsman-like details, including wood surfaces and 100 percent full-grain leather seats, than any other truck in the segment.”

Ram’s interior designer, Ryan Negode, took inspiration from antique pocket watches, hand-tooled leather cowboy boots, and a horseman’s saddle. As such, all the details within the cabin are as authentic as they look. The wood trim is really wood; the meal trim is really metal; and the leather seats are 100-percent, full-grain natural leather.

“The wood trim is really wood; the meal trim is really metal; and the leather seats are 100-percent, full-grain natural leather.”

Other details include an alligator skin pattern on the center console and part of the seat accents, the southwestern inspiration on the door panels, and contrast stitching on just about every leather surface. Like the Laramie Longhorn before it, the 2019 version continues the buckled satchel backs as map pockets on the front seatbacks.

Ram offers two interior color choices for the Laramie Longhorn: Mountain Brown/Light Mountain Brown and Black/Cattle Tan. Both have the same wood and metal accent pieces and come with heated and vented front seats. Optionally, heated and vented rear seats are a class-exclusive option. Standard accent lighting helps give the cabin a warm glow at night.

On the outside, the Laramie Longhorn adds 20-inch wheels with 22s as an option. Several paint colors are present, but Ram seems most proud of its RV-match brown two-tone option. The option debuted on the outgoing Ram Laramie Longhorn and gives the truck a brown two-tone lower color that matches many RV trailers found on the market. This gives the truck and trailer a unified and customized appearance.

“Other exterior features include chrome on the grille, tow hooks, bumpers, mirror caps, door handles, and badges”

Other exterior features include chrome on the grille, tow hooks, bumpers, mirror caps, door handles, and badges. The high-class trim also comes standard with Ram’s upgraded LED headlights and taillights.

In addition to the swanky upgrades to the Laramie Longhorn trim, the 2019 Ram 1500 also boasts a laundry list of upgrades. From the frame up, it’s a new truck that shares almost nothing with the outgoing model. Ram worked to increase the truck’s payload and towing figures, meaning it can better compete with Chevy and Ford. Properly equipped, the truck can pull 12,750 pounds, even with its multi-link coil spring rear suspension. Much of that credit goes to the new frame and optional next-generation air suspension system.

Power in the Laramie Longhorn comes from updated 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engines mated up to an updated eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive comes standard and 4WD is optional.

2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Edition - image 763506

Ram has not released the pricing for any of the 2019 Ram 1500 trim lines, but we expect to see a marked increase in pricing. Ram’s outgoing trucks were underpriced compared to the Ford and Chevy. While that’s great for customers, it shows Ram has room for added profits. The 2018 Ram 1500 started at $27,095. Check every option box on the 2018 Laramie Longhorn and the price hovers around $55,000. Expect the 2019 model’s pricing to expend into the low $60,000s.

PostHeaderIcon Ram’s New Emblem Gets Tougher for 2019

The Ram 1500 is completely new for 2019 and with it comes a revision of the Ram’s Head emblem. The new logo is more angular and sculpted than before, losing its rounded shape. Even the shield behind the Ram’s Head emblem is different, moving from a heptagon to an octagon. Emblazed at the top is the R-A-M name, completely ending any prior associations the Ram’s Head had with Dodge.

The new logo mirrors the design theme of 2019 Ram 1500 pickup. Joe Dehner, Head of Ram Design for FCA, said his team made sure the truck maintained a tough appearance despite its more luxurious interior.

“Regardless of the material it’s made of, whether its glass, plastic, metal, composite, or aluminum, it looks like if it were to take a beating it would survive,” Dehner said. “I jokingly say if you hit it with a sledgehammer, it would break the hammer. We took that to heart and put that into the design of the new Ram, and also into the logo.”

The new logo isn’t found on the 2019 truck’s front grille, however. That’s reserved for the new R-A-M logo. The crosshair grille has been completely phased out. The full Ram’s Head and octagonal shield are only seen on the tailgate. Elsewhere on the truck, the plain Ram’s Head is seen. It’s found on the steering wheel, center caps on the wheels, and several other places.

What do you think of the new Ram’s Head logo and its updated octagonal shield? Let us know in the comments.

PostHeaderIcon Ram 1500

The 2019 Ram 1500 is completely new from the tow hooks to the hitch and wears a new design that departs from the iconic crosshair grille of the last 25 years. It rides on an all-new frame that’s lighter and stronger, boasts a new interior that’s far more user-friendly and luxurious, and has a new mild hybrid system on both its 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8.

The truck moves into its fifth generation for 2019 and doubles down on every major selling point in a bid to win market share from Ford and General Motors. Weight has been reduced by 225 pounds, the frame is built from 98 percent high-strength steel for increased payload and towing, and the segment’s first-ever deployable front air dam will work in conjunction with the mild hybrid systems to improve fuel economy. Ram will continue offering its popular 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, too, but with more power and torque.

The Ram Rebel returns, as well, but with more off-road equipment and twice the attitude. The other familiar trims include the Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited.

While pricing hasn’t been announced, the 2019 Ram 1500 will arrive in showrooms by the end of Q1 of 2018. That means we don’t have long to wait.

Continue reading for more on the all-new 2019 Ram 1500.

Exterior

  • First all-new design in 25 years
  • Longer, wider, but lighter
  • Three cab sizes
  • Ram Rebel brings off-road attitude
  • Segment-first deployable front air dam

“Gone is the iconic crosshair grille, replaced by a bold RAM logo centered inside a six-sided grille”

The 2019 Ram 1500 enjoys fresh styling for the first time in 25 years. Gone is the iconic crosshair grille, replaced by a bold RAM logo centered inside a six-sided grille. Available adaptive LED projector-bean headlights add both style and functionality, while LED fog lights and taillights mean more of the same and fewer bulb replacements. Headlights on lower trims include the standard halogen and mid-grade LED headlights without the adaptive system.

Like with nearly any vehicle, the Ram’s appearance changes with each trim level. The base Tradesman wears a black grille and bumpers, while the Rebel gets powder-coated trim pieces. The upper trims are decked out in yards of chrome. A whopping 16 wheel designs are spread through the lineup and sizes range from 18- to 22-inch in diameter. A total of 12 colors are available, including four new colors that include Billet Silver, Tri-coat White, Patriot Blue, Diamond Black Crystal. The popular two-tone paint scheme can also be had.

The Ram’s size has grown to make extra room in the cabin. The wheelbase is four inches longer, which translates directly into more legroom in the second row of the Quad and Crew Cab models. The truck is also a half-inch wider. Ram also proudly announced its new shark fin antenna, making the Ram the first pickup to abandon the traditional mast antenna.

2019 Ram 1500 - image 760762
“All Ram 1500s now have a spoiler integrated onto the rear edge of the cab and bed walls that are 1.5-inches taller than before”

Aerodynamics are aided by that deployable front air dam and several other key design features. The air dam is only needed on trucks without the optional adjustable air suspension. All Ram 1500s now have a spoiler integrated onto the rear edge of the cab and bed walls that are 1.5-inches taller than before. The extra height is said to cut wind resistance, though it will make loading the bed a bit harder for “vertically challenged” people. Even the new aluminum tailgate employs a small spoiler lip to manage airflow. As before, every Ram features active grille shutters that redirect air away from the engine bay when cooling isn’t an issue. All told, the truck boasts an impressive 0.357 coefficient of drag.

Unfortunately, Ram made no announcements about the rumored split tailgate we’ve seen in spy shots and patent documents. The option will hopefully become available later in the Ram’s life cycle and not wind up in FCA’s dumpster.

“The interior obviously changes drastically between the trim levels, but even the Tradesman boasts better materials and updated technology”

As nice as the Ram’s exterior updates are, its interior is even more impressive. Not one part is carried over from before as Ram ushers in a new era of class and design. The interior obviously changes drastically between the trim levels, but even the Tradesman boasts better materials and updated technology. The big news is Ram’s new 12-inch Uconnect infotainment system. Like in Volvo and Tesla vehicles, the massive screen controls the HVAC system as well as entertainment and navigation. The familiar 8.4-inch screen returns, but with updated software.

The Ram Crew Cab’s increases overall length means more legroom for rear seat passengers. Making the absolute most out of the extra space, Ram installed reclining rear seats. Yep, the back seat is just as comfy as the front. The Rear bench even has heated and vented seat bottoms – a segment first. Yet despite the added luxury, the bench still folds up against the rear wall, revealing the Ram’s new flat load floor. Gone is s the transmission tunnel hump and the cumbersome folding racks that pretended to be a flat floor.

“The big news is Ram’s new 12-inch Uconnect infotainment system”

On models with a full center console, which is optional on lower and mid-grade trims and standard on upper trims, the new design has movable front cup holders, a wireless phone charger cleverly named the “Ram Charger,” a deep storage container large enough for a 15-inch laptop, and side pockets that run the outside length of the console. In addition to the wireless charger, the center console has a total of five USB ports, including the new USB-C style.

Those trucks without the massive 12-inch Uconnect infotainment system have knobs for radio and HVAC controls, along with other ancillary controls like seat heaters. A row of toggle switches down low is paired with an integrated trailer brake controller. Thankfully, Ram includes hard-key buttons along the vertical sides of the 12-inch screen for the radio volume and the HVAC’s dual-zone temperature control and fan speed, meaning quick adjustments are still easy to make. Both the 12- and 8.4-inch systems come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The 12-inch Uconnect system also makes available a crazy powerful audio system from Harman Kardon. The system boasts 19 speakers, a 10-inch subwoofer, and a 900-watt amplifier. The premium speakers feature active noise cancellation and are covered with metal speaker grills.

“The rotary shift knob returns for 2019, but with an updated design”

The rotary shift knob returns for 2019, but with an updated design. Its surrounded by the 4WD controls, the cancelation button for the automatic start/stop system, and on trucks with the Off Road and Rebel packages, buttons for downhill descent control and the locking rear differential.

Speaking of the Ram Rebel, the sporty trim comes with a unique interior treatment. The red-on-black design includes red contrast stitching and anodized aluminum trim, along with red leather door panel inserts. And like the previous generation Rebel, the seats feature the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac’s tread pattern embossed right into the cloth. It’s a clever touch.

“The Ram’s familiar 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 return for 2019 with some significant updates”

The Ram’s familiar 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 return for 2019 with some significant updates. Both engines now have a mild-hybrid system that helps with low-end torque right off idle and restart the engine nearly instantaneously after an automatic start/stop event. Called the eTorque system, the hybrid unit replaces the alternator with an eclectic motor-generator connected to the engines’ crankshaft via a belt drive. With the engine running, the motor-generator charges a 48-volt current to a 300 watt-hour, briefcase-sized, lithium-ion battery located behind the rearmost seat. During acceleration from a stop, the motor kicks out 90 pound-feet of torque for the V-6 and 130 pound-feet of torque for the V-8. At higher revs, the system recharges the battery, allowing the gasoline engine to run normally. This means horsepower and torque figures remain unchanged from the outgoing truck.

The 3.6-liter V-6 makes 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, while the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 makes 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.

Though Ram didn’t make an official announcement at the Detroit debut, we know the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 will be available in the new truck. Best of all, horsepower has increased from 240 to 260 and torque goes from 420 to a stump-pulling 442 pound-feet.

“All three engines are mated to an updated eight-speed automatic transmission that is said to have reduced internal friction and are calibrated to work with the eTorque system”

All three engines are mated to an updated eight-speed automatic transmission that is said to have reduced internal friction and are calibrated to work with the eTorque system. Further helping with efficiency is an industry-first rear differential warmer on rear-wheel-drive trucks. The system uses engine coolant to more quickly bring the rear differential fluid to a higher, more viscous temperature to help with fuel economy. 4WD Rams won’t get this system, though all Rams will continue using a similar system to warm the transmission fluid, just as on the outgoing truck.

Both the part-time 4WD transfer case and the upper-level on-demand 4WD transfer case are reworked for 2019, both for improved fuel economy and to better handle the increased payload and towing specs of the new truck. The same is true for the axles. Ram moves from a five- to a new six-lug pattern for added strength. Axles ratios on both rear-drive and 4WD trucks include 3.21, 3.55, and 3.92. That new electronic locking rear differential is an option with the 3.55 and 3.92 ratios on trucks with 4WD and either the Rebel or 4×4 Off Road Package.

“The 2019 Ram 1500’s more impressive 12,750-pound towing capacity is thanks to a new Max Tow Package”

The 2019 Ram 1500’s more impressive 12,750-pound towing capacity is thanks to a new Max Tow Package. It includes the 5.7-liter Hemi and rear-wheel drive. The package adds a unique Dana Super 60 center axle section with a 256-millimeter gear set, 35-spline axle shafts, and the 3.92 final drive ratio with an open differential. It’s likely the Max Tow Package will be a special-order option and not a common sight on dealership lots.

2019 Ram 1500 - image 760606
“The 2019 Ram 1500 takes a massive leap forward in terms of active safety technology”

The 2019 Ram 1500 takes a massive leap forward in terms of active safety technology. The truck now offers adaptive cruise control with stop, go, and hold functions, LaneSense lane departure warning and keeping, and ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park, which will help with parking in tight spots. Better still, the truck has Forward Collision Warring-Plus. This system will warn the driver of an impending crash and automatically stop the truck should the driver fail to in time.

Of course, the Ram comes filled with passive safety equipment, too. Dual front airbags, side impact airbags, side roll-over airbags, front crumple zones and side-impact door beams. The front crumple zones use Ram’s new “splayed and tapered” frame rails. Basically, the frame gets wider ahead of the engine and mounts to the bumper in front of the wheels. This is expected to help with the IIHS’ small-overlap crash test. Wheel blockers are mounted behind the front wheels to keep them from deforming the cab floor if shoved rearward by an impact. Undoubtedly, Ram is shooting for a Top Safety Pick+ award.

Pricing

2019 Ram 1500 - image 760561

Prices for the new 2019 Ram 1500 hasn’t been announced, though we won’t have to wait long. Ram says the new truck will arrive in showrooms by the end of Q1 2018. Prices for the current Ram 1500 start at $26,495 for the base Tradesman trim and peak around $56,000, just to give an idea. We expect Ram to really explore the upper pricing realm with its Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims, especially with all the new luxury-minded equipment that’s available.

The Competition

2018 Ford F-150

2018 Ford F-150 - image 700449

The biggest competitor in the half-ton pickup category is the F-150. It’s also the best-selling vehicle in America, The F-150 underwent its latest update for the 2018 model year, making it still very fresh. The F-150 comes in literally hundreds of bed, cab, trim, drivetrain, and option combinations, making the truck incredibly customizable.

The powertrain list is long with no less than six engine options. It starts with a 3.3-liter V-6 as the base engine. A 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 are the mid-range engine choices, while the 3.5-liter EcoBoost is what Ford wants you to buy. Those getting the F-150 Raptor will automatically get a high-output version of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost that’s rated at an impressive 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Most models come with Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission Lower trims get the familiar six-speed automatic.

Ford’s latest engine, announced for late 2018, is a new 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel. This new Power Stroke makes 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy and towing specs have not been announced, though the many say Ford is shooting for 30-plus mpg on the highway.

Prices range wildly depending on trim and options. The base XL truck starts at $27,380, but a decked-out Limited trim with all the options checked will top $68,000.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado

2019 Chevrolet Silverado - image 760482

Debuting alongside the 2019 Ram 1500 at the Detroit Auto Show is Chevy’s all-new Silverado. The 2019 model is new from the ground up, getting a new exterior design, a revised interior styling, and updated V-8 engines. While impressive, we’re admittedly more impressed with the 2019 Ram thanks to its laundry list of innovation. Still, the Chevy isn’t without some new-age technology.

Much of that is under the hood. The familiar 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8 get an industry-first fuel-saving technology Chevy calls Dynamic Fuel Management. The system can shut off any number of cylinders – right down to two! – in order to save on fuel, depending on the engine load and operating temperatures. Basically, the engine’s computer will determine how many cylinders it needs to feed fuel, spark, and pressure to for smooth operation. The engines continue to use direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. As of its debut at Detroit, Chevy has not announced power or fuel economy figures.

Pricing for the 2019 Silverado is also still under wraps, though we will be waiting until the end of 2018 before seeing the new truck in showrooms. Estimated pricing will start around $30,000 and cap around $65,000.

Conclusion

Ram certainly knocked its 2019 pickup out of the park. Between the new styling, the swanky interior, the extra interior space, loads of technology, and new active safety equipment, the Ram is poised to take some serious market share away from Ford and Chevy. We’ll have to see what GMC has up its sleeve for its 2019 Sierra, but we’re guessing it will be very similar to the 2019 Silverado. If so, Ram will be ultra competitive.

We’ll bring updates as Ram announced pricing and fuel economy for its new truck, so stay tuned to TopSpeed.com.

PostHeaderIcon Should Ram Resurrect The Ramcharger?

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 is a wonderful improvement over the outgoing generation. Not only is it sleeker and more luxurious, its frame is stronger, its overall weight is down, and its drivetrain has been updated with mild hybrid systems in both the V-6 and V-8 engines. The truck will undoubtedly be very successful in competition with the also-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and the recently revised Ford F-150. But Ram is missing something – a full-size SUV based on its pickup.

Both Chevy and Ford have body-on-frame SUVs based on their half-ton pickups, and both have a long and rich history. In fact, the Chevy Suburban is the oldest automotive nameplate in existence. The Expedition is newer, having debuted in 1997, but over its 20 years, has made quite a name for itself. Ram, on the other hand, hasn’t had a truck-based, full-size SUV since 1993. That vehicle was the Ramcharger. Though only offered in a two-door model, it competed strongly against GM and Ford’s two-door SUVs, the Chevy Blazer and Ford Bronco – both of which were based on their respective half-ton trucks.

So, now that Ram has its all-new, fifth-generation truck, is it time the automaker resurrected the Ramcharger name? I say yes. Here’s my reasoning.

Ram 1500 Ramcharger

Should Ram Resurrect The Ramcharger?
- image 759915
“The long-wheelbase Ramcharger could ride on the Ram 1500’s current wheelbase and offer tons of room for third-row seating and boundless cargo space behind”

Ram could very easily adapt its half-ton frame and body for use in an SUV. In fact, everything ahead of the B-pillars could be shared with the Ram 1500, just as the Suburban and Expedition have done in the past with their respective pickups. And like both Chevy and Ford, Ram could have two versions with different lengths. Chevy has the shorter Tahoe and longer Suburban, while Ford has the Expedition and Expedition Max.

The long-wheelbase Ramcharger could ride on the Ram 1500’s current wheelbase and offer tons of room for third-row seating and boundless cargo space behind. A Tahoe-like short wheelbase version would still offer a third row, but with less cargo room and a more compact footprint for easier in-town driving.

Making the transition even easier is the Ram 1500’s rear suspension. It’s already a multi-link coil sprung suspension with a solid axle – just like the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban. (Ford spent the extra cash to develop an independent rear suspension for the second-generation and newer Expedition.) The Ram’s optional adjustable air suspension would make for an even smoother ride.

Should Ram Resurrect The Ramcharger?

“The Ram’s optional adjustable air suspension would make for an even smoother ride.”

The same is true for the drivetrain. Ram’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with its new mild hybrid system would be just fine for lower trimmed, short wheelbase Ramchargers, while the updated 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and its mild hybrid system would make a perfect engine for upper trimmed models and the long wheelbase version. Naturally, the eight-speed automatic would be standard and part-time 4WD would be optional.

Making the case even stronger (and more plausible) is the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer and luxury-minded Grand Wagoneer. Both are slated to ride on the fifth-generation Ram’s chassis and compete with mid-level and high-level luxury SUVs. The Wagoneer will cater to the upper-middle-class family, while the Grand Wagoneer will compete with the Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade, and other high-end SUVs.

“The case for a Ramcharger is extremely strong”

Ram could easily co-develop its Ramcharger alongside the Jeep Wagoneers. Not only would it save on development costs, but the would give FCA another vehicle to help pay for development costs – making both the Ram and Jeep versions less expensive to make.

Last but certainly not least is the current market for SUVs and pickups. Thanks to lower and more stable fuel prices, SUVs and trucks have experienced a resurgence in popularity. Three-row vehicles that can haul seven people and tow 8,000 pounds are hot these days. And there is no question that FCA needs more vehicles in its lineup after killing off the unpopular Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200.

The case for a Ramcharger is extremely strong. Let’s just hope Ram is actually thinking about the possibility as hard as I am.

PostHeaderIcon All-New 2019 Ram 1500 Steals The Show at Detroit

The 2019 Ram 1500 is making big waves at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show thanks to an all-new design that departs from years past, a swanky new interior with the segment’s first 12-inch touchscreen, a completely new frame, revised suspension designs, and a new mild hybrid system on both the 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter V-8.

Starting with the frame, Ram managed to cut weight by 100 pounds yet make it stronger thanks to its 98-percent composition of high-strength steel. Overall, nearly 225 pounds has been cut from the truck. Aluminum is used extensively in the unseen parts. The transmission crossmember, steering system, front suspension, and even the engine mounts are made from the lightweight yet strong material. The tailgate also uses an aluminum skin.

“On trucks not equipped with the active air suspension and the Rebel, the air dam lowers by 2.5 inches at speeds above 35 mph.”

Aerodynamics are improved thanks to a segment-first active air dam. On trucks not equipped with the active air suspension and the Rebel, the air dam lowers by 2.5 inches at speeds above 35 mph. The active grille shutters return from the outgoing truck, too.

Inside, the Ram 1500 boasts a high-class interior regardless of trim level. Each trim takes inspiration from different hammers – yes, hammers – Ram says represents the different customers the trim levels are geared for. The big news, of course, is the massive 12-inch touch screen running a new version of FCA’s Uconnect software. The screen is basically two 8.4-inch screens stacked vertically and can run two separate applications or operate in a full-screen mode. The 12-inch system is standard in the range-topping Limited and available in the Laramie. The 8.0-inch and 7.0-inch systems fill the lower trims.

“Each trim takes inspiration from different hammers – yes, hammers – Ram says represents the different customers the trim levels are geared for”

The crew cab model is nearly 4.0-inches longer than before, allowing for reclining rear seats. A completely flat load floor is finally included, and the in-floor storage bins return, too.

Under the hood are revised versions of the familiar 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Both come with mild hybrid systems called eTorque that use a large electric motor to help twist the crankshaft via a belt-drive system. The motor also acts as the starter for the auto start/stop system and also recharges the Ram’s 48-volt battery pack during braking. The battery is a briefcase-sized unit located along the cab’s bulkhead.

“Both engines come with mild hybrid systems called eTorque that use a large electric motor to help twist the crankshaft via a belt-drive system”

The 3.6-liter V-6 is rated at 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. The 5.7-liter V-8 is rated at 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. While the same as the outgoing truck, the fuel economy is said to be much improved. Ram hasn’t announced those numbers, yet.

A new 4×4 Off-Road package is now available on nearly every trim. It comes standard with part-time 4WD, an electronic locking rear differential, a one-inch suspension lift, and 32-inch all-terrain tires. It can be had with or without the four-corner air suspension. It also includes hill-descent control and the same off-road-biased rear suspension geometry as the Rebel.

“The 2019 Ram 1500 can be ordered starting in late January and will arrive in showrooms by the end of Q1 2018”

And speaking of the Ram 1500 Rebel, it returns for 2019 with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires on 18-inch wheels, skid plates, and a one-inch suspension lift. Changes include the availability of the Quad Cab, the air suspension as an option rather than standard, a locking rear differential, and new Bilstein shocks.

The 2019 Ram 1500 can be ordered starting in late January and will arrive in showrooms by the end of Q1 2018. Pricing has not been announced at this time, but shouldn’t be long before Ram released the information.

PostHeaderIcon Leaked: 2019 Ram 1500 in All its Glory

Much has been speculated about the upcoming, all-new 2019 Ram 1500. It’s a huge player in the half-ton pickup segment and a big moneymaker for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Thankfully, the speculation can end, at least concerning the truck’s front-end appearance. This photo was leaked on Reddit. It clearly shows the 2019 Ram 1500 in all its glory as it just rolled off the assembly line.

While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Ram’s face, this is by far the clearest shot we’ve seen. The new grille style, the intricate headlights, and the new bumper design are all plainly visible.
We’ve also seen spy shots of the Ram’s side badges’ new location on the hood, but again, this is the first time we’re seeing how the truck looks as a whole. The photo also reveals the trim level badge will remain on the door.

Ram’s tilting towing mirrors are present on this particular truck, suggesting it is optioned for heavier towing. The smallish wheels support that theory. We fully expect Ram to keep the 1500’s multi-link coil spring rear suspension, however. The setup has become an endearing trademark of the truck thanks to its softer, less truck-like ride. Ram seems to have no problem letting Ford and GM fight for bragging rights in the half-ton towing battle. It knows the average 1500-series consumer will appreciate the ride more than towing capability.

This unprecedented early glimpse at the 2019 Ram 1500 won’t be important for long. Ram is set to officially debut the truck at next week’s 2018 Detroit Auto Show. At that point, Ram will announce details on the interior, powertrain, and the slew of other updates we’re expecting will be included.

You won’t want to miss the debut, so stick around to TopSpeed.com for that and all the other breaking Detroit Auto Show news and debuts.

PostHeaderIcon Peek-A-Boo! 2019 Ram 1500 Slips From Under Covers

The next-generation Ram 1500 will debut in a few weeks’ time at the Detroit Auto Show on January 15 to much anticipation. Yet ahead of the show, we’re getting a solid look at the half-ton’s new grille and front fascia design. Gone is the iconic crosshair grille design that’s been a mainstay since 1994. It’s replaced by a six-sided grille with the R-A-M logo brazened right in the center.

This is a change Ram has been preparing its customers for over the last few years. Trim levels like the Ram Rebel and Laramie Longhorn have departed from the traditional grille in favor of a nostril-style grille with the R-A-M logo rather than the ram’s head emblem.

The 2019 Ram also features headlights and fog lights are more integrated into the body; the stepped fenders and tall hood are reduced to a barely-noticeable feature on the new truck. Thankfully, the tow hooks are still easily accessible, and the air dam seems to be rather minimal for a better approach angle.

What We Know

2019 Ram 1500 - image 689823
“The 2019 Ram 1500 might be completely new, but it’s shaping up to be more evolutionary versus revolutionary.”

The 2019 Ram 1500 might be completely new, but it’s shaping up to be more evolutionary versus revolutionary. The venerable 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and eight-speed automatic transmission are expected to return, as well as the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, though perhaps with the automatic start/stop feature found on the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL. Last but not least, the lovely 3.0-liter EcoDiesel will return, though with the healthy boost in power that is scheduled for the Jeep, as well. Horsepower is up from 240 to 260, while torque moves from 420 to 442 pound-feet.

We also know the Ram’s tailgate will be getting an innovative new feature. As we reported in November 2017, the tailgate will have a vertical split (roughly 70/30) that will allow for either side to operate independently. The tailgate will also swing open like French doors, while still being able to fold flat like conventional tailgates. The RamBox storage system should return, as well.

Spied: 2019 Ram Getting Massive Vertical Screen - image 742287
“The interior will have the latest version of Uconnect, the Uconnect 4 system, along with a large vertically oriented screen”

The interior will have the latest version of Uconnect, the Uconnect 4 system, along with a large vertically oriented screen. The gauge cluster should see an enlarged driver information screen, too. The rotary shift knob for the eight-speed automatic will also be present.

Save for pricing and final fuel economy numbers; Ram will announce all the official details come January 15, 2018, at the Detroit Auto Show. Of course, Ram won’t be the only new half-ton truck from a domestic automaker. General Motors will debut the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. We’ve already gotten a substantial view of the Chevy at the automaker’s centennial celebration at the Texas Motor Speedway in December 2017. Still, we know nothing beyond what the Trailboss trim package looks like from the outside. GMC could also debut the 2019 Sierra at Detroit, as well. The GMC is expected to have a greater departure from the Chevy, giving GM customers more variety rather than different grilles and badges.
