PostHeaderIcon 2019 Ram 1500 Departs From Classic ‘Big Rig’ Design

The next-generation Ram 1500 has been spotted by spy photographers and boy; the differences are huge! Scheduled for the 2019 model year, this half-ton truck departs from the classic Ram “big rig” design that dates back to the second-generation Dodge Ram that debuted for 1994. Gone are the crosshair grille and the big step between the hood and headlights. Ram has also moved the model and engine badge to the hood, leaving the doors free of clutter. But the front isn’t the only change.

The spy photos show a completely revised pickup with new metal from bumper to bumper. Even the cab section looks new. The doors certainly have new skin, and the weather stripping around the windows seems thicker, likely to help reduce wind noise. The Ram’s rear features new taillights, a new tailgate skin, and an interesting bumper with a full-length step that should make getting into the bed a bit easier. The bumper-integrated dual exhaust does make the generational jump.

Naturally, Ram hasn’t said a word on its new pickup, but the updates are expected to be more than just skin deep. Expect a strengthened frame, updated suspension components, and maybe even some aluminum body panels to decrease weight in key areas. The RamBox bed should return, along with the multi-link rear suspension an air-ride option.

As for engines, the prototype truck is clearly wearing a badge for the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. We fully expect the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel to return – likely unchanged – along with an updated 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. The ZF eight-speed automatic will likely be standard equipment across the board. The other badge, though covered by tape, will likely be the R-A-M lettering within the horizontal bar in the new grille.

This is an unprecedented look at the upcoming 2019 Ram 1500, however, we see something missing. Keep reading to find out what.

“The new Ram has less distinctive styling than before – at least in our eyes”

Thanks to a loose tarp, a windy day, and Dodge Forum, we’re getting a very good look at Ram’s new truck. Of course, it’s still a prototype, so anything could change before Ram pulls the covers off the truck. That’s expected to happen at the Detroit Auto Show in January of 2018.

As for its appearance, the new Ram has less distinctive styling than before – at least in our eyes. The move away from the “big rig” styling might prove a mistake, though Ram has certainly ridden that design theme for quite a while – 24 years, to be exact. Still, some folks might argue the 2019 Ram looks too similar to the 2018 Ford F-150.

Subjective takes on its appearance aside; the Ram does seem to be missing one feature we were really excited about. This test mule doesn’t have that dual-opening, “multi-use” tailgate Ram has purportedly been working on. The design allows for the conventional use of the tailgate, letting it drop down in the typical fashion, but a split in the middle will also allow the tailgate to open like a double door. Though it would add complexity and cost, the double door-style opening would give amazing access to the cargo bed.

“This test mule doesn’t have that dual-opening, “multi-use” tailgate Ram has purportedly been working on”

Then again, all hope on the tailgate isn’t lost. Back to that rear bumper – its full-length step would be perfect for getting into the bed and could provide a place to locate hidden handles to open the tailgate’s two sides. In fact, the Honda Ridgeline uses a very similar step bumper design and handle location. And since the double door tailgate would surely be an optional extra, perhaps this test mule simply didn’t have it. After all, we have seen previous Ram 1500 test mules running around with big, padded camouflage covering the tailgate area. Imagine how handy the cargo bed would be with the multi-use tailgate paired with the RamBox system. How cool would that be?!

So, what do you think? Do you like the 2019 Ram 1500’s design? Do you hate it? Let us know in the comments below.

PostHeaderIcon Ram Shows Love For Tractors with Harvest Edition Trucks

Ram recently debuted a new line of special edition trucks at the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois called the Harvest Edition. The package is available on the Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 in Quad, Crew, and Mega Cab configurations with all powertrains but the base V-6. Headlining the Harvest Edition are two paint colors: Case IH Red and New Holland Blue. Other upgrades include a one-inch increase in ride height on 1500 models, on/off-road tires, and other farm-ready accessories.

So, what’s the deal with Case and New Holland? Well, both tractor brands are owned by CNH Global – a holding company that also includes Fiat Industrial S.p.A. Ever notice how all the equipment seen in Ram media photos are Case? There’s your answer. (Too bad John Deere isn’t in the mix – that awesome shade of green would look great on a Ram.) Aside from the corporate affiliations and cross-marketing, the Harvest Edition Rams provide a real-life benefit for customers. Not only are the 1500s lifted one inch and come with meaty tires, all models have a specific list of options that cater to daily operations on a farm.

PostHeaderIcon FCA Could Be Bought by a Chinese Automaker

Formed in 2014, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) alliance has been doing very good these past three years, which is why Sergio Marchionne is on the lookout to either sell the company or make another merger with a big brand. FCA was refused by General Motors back in 2015 and Marchionne’s attempts to find a new collaboration have been unsuccessful so far. However, it seems that FCA is actually on the brink of finding a new owner. According to new reports, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has received at least one offer in August from a “well-known Chinese automaker.”

That’s the word from Automotive News, which claims that the over was slightly higher than FCA’s current market value, but the Italian-American alliance rejected it for not being enough. There’s no detailed information as to what Chinese automaker made the offer, but speculation has it that FCA is negotiating with more than one company. Also, a source close to FCA said that company executives have traveled to China to meet with Great Wall Motor Co., while different sources claim talks with Dongfeng Motor Corp., Zhejiang Geely, and Guangzhou Automobile Group.

PostHeaderIcon Ram 3500 Heavy Duty

The current Ram Heavy Duty has been around since 2010 with an update in 2013 and smaller updates scattered throughout the years. Not much changes for 2018, save for one aspect: the Ram 3500’s 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six turbodiesel is getting a healthy bump in torque for class-leading numbers. Turbo boost limits were raised, fuel flow was increased, and a retuning of the ECU adds 30 pound-feet of torque for a total of 930 pound-feet. This surpasses both General Motors and Ford’s maximum torque ratings of 910 and 925 pound-feet, respectively.

This veritable arms race between the Big Three has been ongoing for several decades, but the Torque Wars have really heated up in the last decade. Diesels are popular and the biggest numbers win – both in power figures and towing capability. Ram isn’t short on either. The 2018 Ram 3500 also boasts a new fifth-wheel hitch assembly from Ram Engineering that offers 30,000 pounds of towing. Ram says its the hitch is strongest hitch in the industry. Customer can add the hitch for $1,395, either with a built-to-order truck or as a dealer add-on. The Ram’s gooseneck hitch rating remains unchanged at 31,210 pounds, while its receiver hitch can pull 20,000 pounds. Compare that to Ram 3500’s numbers from 2011. It could only pull 15,540 pounds with a gooseneck and 12,000 pounds at the receiver. Yep – the truck’s towing capabilities have nearly doubled in eight years. But towing and torque aren’t everything, so let’s have a deep look at the 2018 Ram Heavy Duty.

Continue reading for the full review.

PostHeaderIcon Holy Torque! The 2018 Ram 3500 Now Makes 930 Pound-Feet!

The Cummins-powered Ram 3500 will make a whopping 930 pound-feet of torque for the 2018 model year. That puts Ram in the lead of the unofficial Torque Wars raging between the Big Three. Ford and its Power Stroke turbodiesel previously held the lead with 925 pound-feet of torque and the GM twins aren’t far behind with the new-for-2017 Duramax and its 910 pound-feet. Ram also announced its new fifth-wheel hitch designed and built in-house. The beefy hitch, combined with the Cummins’ extra grunt, pushes the 3500’s max fifth-wheel tow rating to 30,000 pounds – another segment-leading figure. Ram’s gooseneck and conventional tow ratings remain unchanged at 31,210 and 20,000 pounds, respectively.

Ram says its engineers worked along side Cummins to enable the torque increase. Minimal changes were actually needed, and consist of a higher-flow fuel delivery system and giving the variable geometry turbo a higher boost limit. A retuning of the ECU is also highly likely. What Ram (or Ford or GM) doesn’t mention: any vehicle with a Gross Combined Weight Rating of 26,001 pounds or more requires the driver have a commercial driver’s license to legally operate on any public road. Hope you’re ready for a written skills evaluation, driving test, and drug testing, depending on your state’s laws.

The 2018 Ram Heavy Duty will begin arriving at dealerships this month. Customers can buy the new fifth-wheel hitch as a dealer add-on for $1,395. But beyond the extra power and new hitch, the Ram Heavy Duty doesn’t change for 2018. Ram is expected to debut the next-generation HD in 2020, which follows the new Ram 1500 in 2019. Stay tuned for our full review of the 2018 Ram Heavy Duty coming soon.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty with 930 lb.-ft. of Torque!

Ram_3500_Longhorn_with_5th_wheel_travel_trailer

Ram Trucks is setting the bar really high for heavy duty pickup trucks with the launch of their new 2018 Ram 3500 HD. This torque monster delivers a ginormous 930 lb.-ft. of torque power, the highest ever for a pickup, which gives it the ability to tow 30,000 lbs worth of stuff.

Now that could be a trailer, a mobile home, or an airliner. Assisting the 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty in this task is a newly engineered fifth-wheel hitch. Ram’s new hitch will allow customers to move away from Class 4 and 5 trucks to haul trailers that would have otherwise been limited to 24,000 lbs.

The massive torque of 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty comes from a Cummins 6.7-liter diesel engine. Improvements resulting in that oomph include higher boost limits through a variable geometry turbo and flow rate increases through the fuel delivery system, enabling the 6.7-liter I-6 to produce an additional 30 lb.-ft. of torque. Al of this makes the new 3500, which starts production this week, a workman’s dream. It’s not just the amazing capabilities of this truck, or the fact that it looks kind of cool. 930 torque also gives you a lot of bragging right in those all too important bar conversations!

PostHeaderIcon Next-Generation Ram 1500 Debuting At The 2018 Detroit Auto Show

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne has confirmed the next-generation Ram 1500 is on-schedule for its debut and production in January 2018. The unveiling festivities will take place at the Detroit Auto Show between January 14 and 16, while production begins that same month at the Ram’s new Sterling Heights assembly plant. And despite its early production, the new Ram will be a 2019 model. The next-generation Ram 2500 and 3500 are expected to debut the following year with similar design and engineering updates.

The 2019 Ram – codenamed DT – is expected to be lighter thanks to an expanded use of aluminum, though its cargo bed will remain steel for durability. Spy shots of a longer Crew Cab version suggest a Mega Cab option for the 1500, as well, setting the Ram apart in its highly competitive segment. A rumored split-tailgate design is also a possibility. Ram’s prior patent drawings detail a tailgate that acts like the Honda Ridgeline’s, but with a vertical split in the middle allowing for added versatility. A new rear bench seat with “Stow-n-Go”-like folding abilities might offer a completely flat load floor, too, as reported by Allpar. Drivetrain options will include a new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with direct fuel injection and horsepower levels hovering between 310 and 320. An all-new turbocharged inline six-cylinder is expected for 2020, which might replace the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Rumors of an improved (and EPA-certified) EcoDiesel V-6 with a higher tow rating and a turbocharged four-cylinder have also been rumbling around the Internet. None of this has been confirmed, of course, as Ram has a tight hold on its upcoming pickup. Thankfully, the nitty-gritty details are coming in January.

PostHeaderIcon Next-Generation Ram 1500 Gets Mega Cab Option, Spy Photos Show

Spy photos of the 2019 Ram 1500 give a clear indication the Mega Cab option is returning to the half-ton pickup – a feature not seen since its single-year run in 2008. But as pickups become evermore luxurious, Ram is undoubtedly pushing the envelope. As such, we can expect the next-generation truck to offer outstanding levels of luxury – and rear-seat legroom. The crop of spy photos also give a glimpse at the Ram’s all-new dashboard and front grille.

The photos, courtesy of Truck Trend, show the 2019 Ram 1500 in heavy camouflage. However, hints of the grille can be seen. It appears only horizontal bars are present, suggesting the iconic crosshair grille may be gone. It’s also possible Ram is using different grille designs to denote trim levels, just as currently does. Inside, the Ram wears a new dashboard. The design isn’t groundbreaking, but is more modern than the current dash. The Uconnect screen does appear larger than the current 8.4-inch unit. Thankfully, volume and tuning knobs return. Also visible is a conventional, three-knob HVAC controller, a bank of auxiliary switches, and a trailer brake controller. The rotary shift knob returns, too, as does a large TFT screen between analog dials in the gauge cluster. A smaller-diameter, leather-wrapped steering wheel caps off the new cabin.

PostHeaderIcon Ram Limited Tungsten Edition

Ram is jumping aboard the metal trim train with Ford and Nissan. But rather than platinum, Ram is going tungsten with the Limited Tungsten Edition. Offered on the 2018 Ram 1500 and HD pickups, this new trim marks the highest available on a Ram. The new Tungsten Edition includes all the luxuries found in the Limited trim, but includes “Natura Plus” leather seats colored in Frost and Indigo, unique exterior trim, and the first-ever suede headliner in a pickup.

Ram’s target customer is an even more affluent truck buyer, one with a discerning taste, yet who still needs the utility offered by a pickup. Ram boss, Mike Manley, says, “The new Tungsten Edition is an example of how Ram directly responds to customer input by offering the industry’s most luxurious pickup. Premium truck buyers will recognize the attention to detail, surrounded by quality materials.” And Ram sure knows how to sell premium pickups. More than 40 percent of Ram 3500s are optioned in one of the three premium trims, which include Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. The Limited Tungsten Edition is available on the Ram 1500 Crew Cab and both Crew Cab and Mega Cab on HD trucks. The HDs are also offered with short- and long-beds, 2WD and 4WD, single- and dual-rear wheels, and gas and turbodiesel engines, making the Tungsten Edition widely applicable to various needs. Pricing for the 2018 Ram 1500 Limited Tungsten Edition starts at $55,120, which is roughly $2,200 more than the standard Limited trim.

PostHeaderIcon Is Ram Dumping its V-6 & V-8 For A Boosted Inline Four- & Six-Cylinder?

Bob Dylan said, “the times, they are a changin’” back in 1964, but the singer/songwriter’s words have never been truer than today. Rumor suggests Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is expediting development of the new turbocharged four-cylinder engine dubbed the Hurricane and its big brother, the turbocharged inline six-cylinder named Tornado. The high-tech engines are said to be replacements for the well-loved 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and the legendary 5.7-liter Hemi V-8.

Sadly, this isn’t the first we’ve heard about the Hemi getting the axe. Back in February, Allpar cited its multiple insider sources saying FCA was stockpiling 5.7-liters ahead of a planed discontinuation of the V-8 engine sometime after the 2018 model year. Allpar is now reporting the Hemi’s replacement, the Tornado, could be ready within four to five years. There’s a rather large discrepancy between those dates, but it’s easy to speculate FCA is planning some big changes. The Pentastar reportedly has a slightly longer lifespan, lasting another six to 10 years before it’s completely replaced by the Hurricane. The fates of the larger 6.2- and 6.4-liter Hemis are still unknown.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles looks to be cutting the mileage coverage of its powertrain warranty for nearly every vehicle in its fleet, including all gasoline-powered Ram and Jeep vehicles. Since 2009, the automaker has offered a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, but starting on 2016 models, FCA will only offer a five-year/60,000-mile coverage.

So much of life is about choosing the right tool for the job – or at least, knowing what that job is before you choose the tool for it. Take the hammer, for instance. In theory, it’s just a weight on a stick, used for bashing things. But there’s a big difference between a ball peen and a sledge, between a recoil-less claw hammer and a deadblow. Not every hammer will do every job every time.
