PostHeaderIcon 13 Crossover Wagons You Could Buy Instead of an SUV

High-riding vehicles, like crossovers and SUVs are at the height of popularity right now, but they’re not the only way to go if you want practicality and some off-road capability. Crossover style raised wagons are a great alternative and while they can still drive you over a rough field or rutted road with ease, they’re better to drive on road and actually pretty stylish.

They are essentially the wagon versions of different cars which have gained extra ride height and plastic cladding on the outside to protect them from scratches in their most vulnerable points. These vehicles usually have standard all-wheel drive and are usually a higher trim level, so they are not cheap (compared to the vehicle they’re based on) but they also come with a lot of equipment.

Here’s a list of the 13 coolest crossover-style wagons you can buy today.

Although overshadowed by the Volkswagen Golf, its platform sibling, sales-wise, the Seat Leon has been the more powerful race car in various series around the world. The TCR is one of them, having been set up after Seat designed the Leon Cup Racer, also the car that was used as a template for aerodynamic regulations. The increasingly popular series is still dominated by the Leon, which received an update in 2017.

Renamed the Leon Cupra Evo 17, the Spanish race car is more aggressive than ever. The hatchback sports bigger wheel arches, just like the Volkswagen Golf GTI TRC, a massive rear wing, and the copper highlights we’ve seen on recently unveiled Cupra road models. The Leon will continue to race in the TCR International Series, where it will face competition from Audi, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Opel, Volkswagen, and many more carmakers.

PostHeaderIcon Seat Is Going To Have Its Hands Full Over The Next Few Years With New EVs and The Fourth-Gen Leon On The Table

Everybody’s getting in on electrification these days, and you can add Seat to the growing list of automakers that are making a push for the burgeoning segment. The Volkswagen-owned Spanish automaker is planning to release a plug-in hybrid version of the next-generation Leon as the company begins its push for more all-electric cars in the future. The new Leon isn’t going to be Seat’s first all-electric car, but the model that’s going to come after it will be. The yet-to-be-named model is expected to arrive in 2019 where it will be developed alongside Volkswagen’s ID hatchback.

The fourth-generation Seat Leon is getting first dibs on a state-of-the-art infotainment system that’s being developed by the Volkswagen Group. The new infotainment system is reportedly being developed with an eye towards improving its functionality to include certain abilities like updating maps, apps, and other features over-the-air. Once the system is used on the new Leon, it’s expected to filter down across the entire Volkswagen Group range.

“A new infotainment system may not be as important as a car’s wheels and engines, but in today’s world of increased connectivity, it might as well be”

A new infotainment system may not be as important as a car’s wheels and engines, but in today’s world of increased connectivity, it might as well be. It says a lot about the importance of this new system when Seat CEO Luca De Meo admits to Autocar that the company has spent the last two years developing it. In addition to its ability to do over-the-air updates, the new infotainment system will be versatile enough to accommodate a variety of car functions, including air-conditioning and heating. “It will have fewer buttons, more voice control and be much more coherent than (the system) today, Matthias Rabe, Seat research and development boss, said.

Once the new infotainment display hits the market with the fourth-generation Leon, it could end up drawing comparisons to the infotainment system Tesla uses with its own lineup of models. The California-based electric car maker has been at the forefront of infotainment technology, having evolved the system to a point that its models, including the upcoming Model 3, depends almost entirely on its touchscreen, turning it into the brains of the operation with frequent over-the-air updates coming from Tesla itself.

“A similar system from the Volkswagen Group would be beneficial for all the brands under the German conglomerate.”

A similar system from the Volkswagen Group would be beneficial for all the brands under the German conglomerate. This includes Seat, which has worked hard to reinvent its image to cater to younger markets. It’s no secret that this is one of the reasons why the new technology is going to debut in the fourth-generation Leon.

In addition to the new infotainment system, the fourth-generation Leon will also receive a number of body styles, including a five-door hatchback that Rabe hinted will “not be a typical hatch.” It will use Volkswagen’s MQB platform, the same platform that models like the Audi A3 and current-generation versions of the Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Polo, and Tiguan, among others. The hatchback will eventually be joined by a wagon version and a crossover that will sit between the hatchback and the Ateca SUV, another Seat model that uses the same MQB underpinnings.

PostHeaderIcon Seat Leon Cupra R

The 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show is just around the corner and we’re already getting a steady stream of cars that will be in attendance at the event. One car that has our attention is a hot hatchback from an automaker that normally doesn’t get its share of the spotlight. Prepare yourselves as Seat is looking to take Frankfurt by storm with the new Leon Cupra R, the automaker’s most powerful road car in history.

The Leon Cupra R will be joined by the likes of the Ibiza and the Leon Cupra Evo 17 in Frankfurt, but make no mistake, the Cupra R will be the highlight of Seat’s booth, in large part because of its status as a limited edition model and its significance for the company moving forward. Remember, Seat recently filed trademark applications for a Cupra sub-brand, seemingly separating the model from the entire Seat family in hopes of turning it into a performance sub-brand. I can’t
help but wonder then if the Leon Cupra R is more than just a limited edition hot hatch, but a preview of sorts of what we can expect from the Cupra sub-brand in the event that its separation from Seat does happen. For now, though, our attention should be on the Frankfurt-bound Leon Cupra R. With its credentials, the hot hatch has at least earned its place as one of the most exciting cars to hit the upcoming motor show.

PostHeaderIcon SEAT Leon X-Perience Hits the Sahara Desert

SEAT Leon X-Perience

In one of the more unusual stunts they have ever pulled, Spanish car maker SEAT one of their Leons out to the Sahara Desert. The SEAT Leon X-Perience that took on this challenge had to face many difficulties along the way such as high temperatures and massive sand dunes.

And it goes to show how ridiculous are those people who insist on using SUVs in the city even though they live in apartment blocks and everything in every direction within a 100 mile radius is paved and ordered. Here we have the SEAT Leon X-Perience,which is only a jacked-up hatchback, and it can take on the Sahara desert spanning Morocco and Algeria. Surely, it can take your kids to school in Birmingham or Sheffield without taking up too much space on the road or guzzling fuel like there is no tomorrow.

SEAT Leon X-Perience Sahara Desert Adventure Highlights:

  • A 22,000 metre long dune: The route, which was in the zone of Errachidia, Morocco, took the car over rocky terrain, sand and the Erg Chebbi dune. At 22 kilometres long, five kilometres wide and with ridges that exceed 150 metres in height, this is one of the most well-known dunes in the Sahara desert.
  • Facing the challenge of temperature variation: With outside temperatures that vary from below zero at night and 50 degrees during the day, the temperature inside can reach up to 60 degrees. One of the challenges of driving in the desert is to ensure that outside variations do not affect the interior of the passenger compartment nor the driver.
  • Dust particles smaller than one micron: The Scirocco, a south-eastern wind common to this area, can carry dust particles that measure one micron, or one-thousandth of a millimetre. Before a model goes on sale, the SEAT prototypes undergo several tests to ensure the passenger compartment is water and airtight. The goal is to ensure that, in real driving conditions such as the one carried out by the Leon in the desert, not a micron of dust gets into the passenger compartment.
  • Extreme weather events: Sandstorms are a common weather phenomenon in desert areas. Although they move quickly, reaching up to 75 km/h, it is not advisable to attempt to cross through them when driving in the desert. When a sandstorm kicks up, the best thing to do is to stop, face the car away from the direction of the wind and wait until it blows over.
  • Climbing a mountain of sand: Unlike driving on a paved surface, one of the keys to driving on sand is to slightly decrease the pressure of the tyres so that they have greater ground contact. Likewise, in order to drive across a dune, you have to face it straight on and go up at a certain speed. To ensure you remain in control of the vehicle, you should never go downhill in neutral.

The latest-generation Leon came to be in 2012, some 14 years after Seat launched the nameplate. The third-gen car brought many improvements over its predecessor, being significantly lighter and incorporating more technology. The exterior was also redesigned with sportiness in mind, while the interior gained better materials and a more upscale look. Sharing its platform with the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3, the Leon also borrowed its drivetrain from its German counterparts. In 2016, the third-generation model received its mid-cycle facelift.

Although facelifts operated by the Volkswagen Group aren’t exactly comprehensive, the revised Leon arrived with many new exterior features, as well as a significant amount of new technologies in the infotainment and safety departments. The hatchback also gained a couple of new engine options, which make it a more versatile car compared to its main rivals, including the Golf it is based on. Like the outgoing model, the refreshed Leon will be offered in three body styles: the five-door hatchback, three-door hatchback (Sports Coupe), and the five-door station wagon (Sports Tourer).

The facelifted Leon will hit showrooms in early 2017, about the same time Volkswagen is expected to start selling the revised Golf. The Spanish hatch will face massive competition in Europe from the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i30, and Kia Cee’d, among other nameplates. Find out how it compared with its most important competitors in the review below.

PostHeaderIcon Seat Leon Cupra 290

Seat’s Leon Cupra line has been making a lot of waves since the Cupra 280 seemingly came out of nowhere to set the lap time record for a front-wheel-drive production car at the Nurburgring in 2014. That record has since been claimed by the 2016 Honda Civic Type R, but Seat still proved something more important than a record lap time. It showed the world that it can compete with the best hot hatchbacks in the business. The success of the 280 is also a big reason why Seat seemingly fast-tracked the launch of its successor, the Leon Cupra 290.

Boasting all the standard features of the 280 and adding some notable upgrades on the engine and handling fronts, the Leon Cupra 290 aims to take the popularity of its predecessor to new heights, renewing Seat’s goal of hot-hatch dominance with an engine output that now eclipses that of the 2015 Renault Megane RS 275 Cup-S, a similar hot-hatch that will share the stage with the Leon Cupra 290 at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

It’s only fitting that the Leon Cupra 290 will make its debut opposite the Megane RS 275 Cup-S in the same event. After all, it was their predecessors — the 2015 Seat Leon SC Cupra 280 and the 2014 Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy — that battled for the lap record that now belongs to the Civic Type R. The Leon Cupra 290 looks up to it, as does the Megane RS 275 Cup-S.

PostHeaderIcon Seat Leon Cross Sport

Struggling to make a profit for quite a few years now, Seat is in the middle of a massive makeover that includes new products for the brand’s entry in previously unexplored segments. Having launched both a new hot-hatch and performance estate under the Cupra 280 badge, as well as the 2014 Seat Leon X-Perience, a competitor for the 2013 Audi A4 Allroad and 2014 Skoda Octavia Scout, Seat is now preparing the launch of its first SUV, due to arrive in 2016. Meanwhile, the Spanish automaker unveiled the Leon Cross Sport concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

A hybrid between the newly introduced Leon Cupra 290 and the Leon X-Perience, the Cross Sport concept is a high-riding hot-hatch the folks over at Seat describe as “a performance athlete in high-tech trekking shoes.” There’s no word as to whether it will spawn a production car, but we hope so.

Either way, the Cross Sport concept is likely Seat’s way of raising awareness about the company’s future, which will include at least a couple of crossovers by the end of the decade.

PostHeaderIcon IAA Preview: SEAT Leon Cross Sport

SEAT Leon Cross Sport-1

The Spanish are not exactly economic with words, but when they wanted to announced the launch of a new crossover concept at the IAA 2015, SEAT thought one sentence would do! To they go: This is SEAT Leon Cross Sport, it’s dynamic, and aimed at young spirited customers.

You gotta love that. Still, we cannot just leave it at that. We can discuss how the car looks like a Leion Cupra with raised suspension and bi wheels, or how the black bits on the bumpers and around the sills make SEAT Leon Cross Sport looks like a cheap, entry-level model. Or, instead of nitpicking we can tell you how excited we are about the possibility of a handsome three-door crossover getting into production.

SEAT Leon Cross Sport-2

Three-door SUVs usually don’t turn out as great as they first look in the sketches. OK, Range Rover Evoque 3-door is an exception. But even that has not been particularly successful, because it is common sense that when you buy a car that large, it should have enough doors to make it easy getting in and out of.  SEAT Leon Cross Sport will debut at the upcoming IAA Motor Show where we will hopefully find out if it’s going to be produced or not.

SEAT Leon CUPRA 290-1

Following the launch of the new Ibiza Cupra, Spanish automaker SEAT now announced the arrival of a spicier model. The 2016 SEAT Leon CUPRA 290 hot hatch comes with sharp styling, loads of power, and advanced technologies promising to make a great driver’s car.

To be launched into the European markets after its debut at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, the new SEAT Leon CUPRA 290 packs a 2.0 liter 290 PS TSI turbo engine. That is a lot of power for a front-wheel-drive car, which is why they have equipped it with DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control), front differential lock, progressive steering, and CUPRA Drive Profile.

SEAT Leon CUPRA 290-2

A lot is going on up there, but the result is a good drive and a huge turn of speed. When fitted with the optional DSG transmission, SEAT Leon CUPRA 290 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The manual is a tenth of a second slower. The performance can be enhanced further with the optional Sub8 Performance Pack, which includes a set of Brembo brake callipers, an exclusive wheel design and special tyres.

SEAT Leon CUPRA 290-3

Styling-wise, typicalSEAT features, such as sharp angles and frowning LED headlights, give the Leon CUPRA a familiar look – somewhat indistinguishable from the Ibiza, some may argue. The car has a nice interior though, featuring a lot of Alcantara, CUPRA steering wheel and the Satellite Navigation with a 6.5 inch screen.

PostHeaderIcon Seat Leon ST Cupra 280 Is The Fastest Estate At Nurburgring

Spanish automaker Seat recently announced that its Leon ST Cupra 280 wagon has lapped the Nurburgring in 7:58.12 minutes, making it the fastest estate ever to go round the infamous German race track. Not only did the five-door missile manage to trump the AWD, V-8-powered Audi B7 RS4 on its way to snatch the title, it also outpaced its lighter and shorter hot-hatch stablemate by a few fractions of a second, despite the three-door setting a new FWD record last year.

At the helm was Spanish racing driver and Seat spokesman Jordi Gene, who commented on the blistering time in a press release, saying: “It was an indescribable feeling to get the best out of this car and to be the first to achieve this record.”

To help him eke out every tenth, the Cupra was outfitted with the optional £2,025 ($3,190 at current exchange rates, 5/14/15) Sub8 Performance Pack, which adds larger Brembo brakes and 19-inch alloy wheels. Gummy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, a £460 ($725) option, were on hand for contact-patch duties. The wagon also benefitted heavily from its limited-slip front differential, which made the most of available traction offered from the front-wheel-drive layout.

“The Leon ST Cupra reinforces that an estate car doesn’t have to be a compromise,” said Dr. Matthias Rabe, Seat Vice President for Research and Development, in a press release, adding, “The [ST Cupra 280] is a sports car for the whole family.”

PostHeaderIcon SEAT Leon ST Cupra Named Nürburgring’s Fastest Estate

006ST CUPRA NBR

This past few SEAT has developed quite an obsession with the Nürburgring and fastest lap times records. After securing the title of the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the Nürburgring, they have now set the record for the fastest estate car as well with the new SEAT Leon ST Cupra 280.

The waited for the Wörthersee Treffen in Austria and the car’s debut to announce this, because otherwise SEAT Leon ST Cupra would be just another estate car that just happens to have a beefy engine. Now though, the ST has some proper bragging rights.

In order to become the fastest estate car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife SEAT Leon ST Cupra 280 popped in a 7:58.12 minutes. What makes this record more impressive is the fact the ST is still front-wheel-drive, and it still doesn’t have more than 280 PS to play with. The car does, however, boasts a great chassis as well as a Limited Front Slip Differential (VAQ) and a six-speed manual gearbox. This combination evidently works really well.

Other highlights of the SEAT Leon ST Cupra incldue 19-inch alloy wheels, BREMBO high-performance braking system and body-colour side skirts. The car is also one of the roomiest mid-size estate cars with decent cargo space. It is, after all, a wagon, and a wagon has to be good at carrying stuff no matter how fast it might be.
