PostHeaderIcon Volkswagen ID Roomzz Concept

It’s not the lineup we can expect, but Volkswagen’s growing family of I.D. concepts welcomed its newest member to the fold at Auto Shanghai 2019. The new model, called the I.D. Roomzz Concept, is yet another concept crossover that previews a production model that’s scheduled to hit the Chinese market sometime in 2020. If VW’s grand EV plans come to fruition — the German automaker is putting up almost $35 billion in investments to its EV cause — the production version of the I.D. Rooms Concept would follow the all-electric hatchback and all-electric crossover that Volkswagen already has in the pipeline. Testing of the hatchback model, called the ID.3, is now in full swing after a series of videos previewing the model’s Launch Edition leaked online. The budding excitement surrounding the ID.3’s coming launch shouldn’t take away from the potential of the I.D. Roomzz Concept, especially with what this concept brings to the table.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-AMG A 35 L

The Chinese market has always been a hotbed for limousines. In recent years, though, a different kind of limousine has enraptured the hearts and wallets of Chinese consumers. Stretched sedans have exploded in popularity in the People’s Republic, so much so that automakers from all over the world build these models specifically to cater to the whims of the Chinese car-buying population. Mercedes-Benz has taken full advantage of this. It offers the A-Class L, C-Class L, and now, the AMG A 35 L. As the name implies, the AMG A 35 L carries a bit of AMG’s racy DNA with it. It’s fast, powerful, and, most importantly in this instance, has a stretched out interior that provides more rear legroom space for an owner to take full advantage of as the business of hard labor is left in the hands and feet of the hired chauffeur. The Mercedes-AMG A 35 L is the latest example of the automotive mind meld that is the stretched sedan. But, hey, it’s popular in China, and what’s popular in the world’s largest auto market is a goldmine for auto brands like Mercedes. Better get used to the stretched sedans; it doesn’t look like they’re going away anytime soon.

PostHeaderIcon Karma Pininfarina GT Coupe

Karma Automotive, the company that emerged after the bankruptcy of Henrik Fisker’s first automotive venture, came to the 2019 Shanghai with its own “Big Three”: A flamboyant open-top concept, the revised Revero GT and this lavish and elegant two-door sports car penned by Pininfarina which could be produced in limited quantities by Pininfarina if enough buyers get together. As it’s based on the Revero’s underpinnings, it should be at least as quick and agile if not more so.

Karma has been around for a few years already, but it was seen as a stagnant company. After all, its only product has been the Revero, essentially an exercise in rebadging the Fisker Karma. In a way, it makes sense as Chinese company Wanxiang who bought Fisker’s assets (as well as a production plant and other things) paid over $149 million for them and, anyway, the Karma’s bad rep was never due to its design since it’s arguably one of the prettiest four-door GTs of the 21st century (just look at the curvaceous rear fenders).

Last year, Karma introduced the Aliso, a limited-edition version of the Revero and the company announced that only 15 will be made with a base price of $145,000, some $15,000 on top of the Revero’s base MSRP of $130,000. This luscious coupe we see here should be at least as expensive if it will be put into production. If not, just look at it in concept form and think that it’s a source of inspiration for Karma products to roll out in the near future.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz Concept GLB

.split798005

The Mercedes-Benz Concept GLB is a concept vehicle that previews a new crossover from the German company. As the name suggests, the GLB is the SUV equivalent of the B-Class compact; thus the production model will slot between the existing GLA and GLC, corresponding to the A-Class and C-Class, respectively. The concept vehicle was unveiled at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show in near-production-ready form.

Notably larger than the GLA, the Concept GLB is actually almost as big as the GLC. But the crossover stands out through its boxy design cues. Although it’s not the baby G-Class it was rumored at first, it’s notably boxier than the coupe-styled GLA, and it also feels more utilitarian than the GLC. The concept features a production-ready design, it’s equipped with technology already available in Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and comes with a production four-cylinder engine under the hood. Let’s find out more about it in the review below.

PostHeaderIcon Infiniti Qs Inspiration Concept

The latest in Infiniti’s growing line of Inspiration concepts made its debut at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. Called the Qs Inspiration, the concept is the latest in a series of concept cars that Infiniti has showcased to spread the word of its plans for greener powertrains and other new technologies that will shape the future of the brand. Like most automakers these days, Infiniti has moved well beyond “talk is cheap” model by showing an increased commitment in demonstrating what it intends to do now that the industry is in the middle of shifting eras. The Qs Inspiration still looks like a concept, but it’s not really just a concept in the traditional sense of one. It’s a look into a future that isn’t that far away anymore. In fact, look for the next-generation Q50 or Q70 sedans to draw inspiration from the Qs. That’s how close this concept is to becoming, well, more than a concept.

PostHeaderIcon Audi AI:ME Concept

Audi revealed the AI:me concept at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, and it clearly gives a preview of what our future will look like. Audi has been on an electric vehicle onslaught, and this concept shows one of the many facets that the company is capable of. Audi’s creation prior to the AI:me, the Q4 e-tron EV, looks like it could be ’production-ized’ soon. But with the AI:me, Audi aims to show what an urban, electric autonomous car could look like in a couple of decades from now.

PostHeaderIcon 2019 Auto Shanghai – Worst In Show

Auto Shanghai 2019 brought out all kinds of attractive new four-wheeled creations, with the best of the best compiled in our traditional Best In Show list right here. Unfortunately, there were a few debuts that definitely left us unimpressed, so we’re calling them out with a follow-up Worst In Show list. Regular readers will no doubt recognize some of these entries from our Best In Show list – as it turns out, we here at TopSpeed can’t always agree when it comes to matters of automotive opinion. PostHeaderIcon 2019 Auto Shanghai – Best In Show

Although the Chinese car market is currently undergoing a sales slump, it’s still the biggest car market in the world. No surprise then that the recent Auto Shanghai show brought out oodles of attractive new debuts, many of which provide clues as to what’ll arrive on these shores in the near future. As such, we’ve got the best of the best lined up right here in the following list.

PostHeaderIcon Should Volkswagen Fight BMW with a Production Version of the 2019 SUV Coupe Concept?

.split768449

Volkswagen just showed off the SUV Coupe Concept at the 2019 Shanghai auto show, a coupe-like version of the China-only Tayron SUV. The automaker calls it a concept, but we already know it will go into production by the end of the year, so it’s more of a pre-production prototype, really.

PostHeaderIcon The 2019 Lotus Evora GT410 Brings Redefined Performance to China

The Lotus Evora is already ten years old as of 2019, but it’s still going strong. Although Lotus is working on a successor, the current Evora is still being used as a base for special-edition sports cars. The latest model is called the GT410 and was unveiled in China, at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. This isn’t the first Evora to sport a “GT410” badge — a one-off was built for the Jim Clark Trust Foundation in 2018 — but it’s the first production run to feature the nameplate.

PostHeaderIcon Stunning Nio ET Preview Concept Would Be A Win For The U.S.

Starting its operations in 2014, Chinese car company Nio already reached the spotlight of the car industry. At the2019 Shanghai Auto Show, it revealed the elegant sedan-coupe called the ET Preview Concept, but you may have heard about it after the Nio EP9 set a Nurburgring lap record for electric cars. While the Nio only sells one electric SUV in China (more than 10,000 of them are on the roads), the ET Preview Concept is a rather surprising proposition for the future. In Shanghai, almost everyone revealed some sort of electric SUV, but Nio went with a fastback sedan. It is the one to compete with the likes of the Tesla Model S and the new Polestar 2. I will go on a limb here and say that it looks better than any one of them.

PostHeaderIcon The 2020 BMW 3 Series LWB Came To Shanghai With Its Sights Set On the Audi A4 L and Mercedes C-Class L

.split798158

The BMW 3 Series has a long-wheelbase variant, and it’s only available in the Chinese market. The newest version of the stretched 3 Series is on display at Auto Shanghai 2019,proving yet again that, at least in China, stretched sedans are the business. The 3 Series LWB shares most of its features with the standard 3er. The only benefit is that it’s longer, which, in turn, provides more interior space for its owners, particularly those who would want to stretch their legs in the back seats. The long-wheelbase 3 Series will go on sale in China by the middle of the year, where it will compete with similar stretched models like the Mercedes C-Class L, Audi A4 L, and Jaguar XEL. Production will take place in the country through BMW’s partnership with China’s Brilliance Auto Group.

PostHeaderIcon The Infiniti Qs Inspiration Previews an All-Electric Sports Sedan

Infiniti is known for building some of the most awe-inspiring concepts you’ll ever see. It’s nice to see, then, that Infiniti’s form is holding up nicely, as we can see from the Qs Inspiration Concept that’s currently on display at Auto Shanghai 2019. Developed as a sports sedan that showcases Infiniti’s push towards electrification, the Qs Inspiration Concept is a sign that Infiniti’s not just talking the talk when it comes to its electrification plans, it’s provided us with a physical example of what we can look forward to in the future. More importantly, the Qs Inspiration won’t stay a concept for long; Infiniti has plans to build a production model in China, for the Chinese market. It’s all part of the automaker’s goal to offer a diverse lineup of electrified models in the world’s biggest car market. The Qs Inspiration Concept is the first step in achieving that goal.

PostHeaderIcon Karma Gives Us a Look At Its Future With the 2020 SC1 Vision Concept

Karma came with its truck filled to the brim at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. Not only did the company built from the ashes of Fisker Automotive present its sole production model, but it also previewed its path into the future with two exquisite concept cars. One of these concept cars is the SC1 Vision Concept that is an unapologetically flamboyant supercar with butterfly doors and a hood so long you could fit a continent between the windshield and the tip of the nose. This EV’s strongpoints are 5G connectivity and a humanized communication system. It’s said to be a sneak preview at the future of Karma’s design language.

Karma brought to Shanghai a trifecta that the company calls its ’New Dawn.’ I see it as sort of rebirth or, at the very least, an attempt at rebrand and repositioning by a company that was known for years as one that simply assembled the cars designed by someone else that they acquired the rights for. Of course, this is an over-simplified view of how things stood, but I’m sure that’s how many thought of Karma, beside the many people that have never even heard of the company altogether. Now, the Chinese conglomerate that urges the automaker on plans to change this and this in-your-face concept might just do the trick. Why? Well, just look at it!

PostHeaderIcon Chevy Has Debuted the All-New 2020 Trailblazer and Tracker in China, But is it More of the Same?

The Shanghai Auto Show is now in full force, and despite declining sales numbers, automakers are still flocking to the event to show off their latest and greatest China-bound model lines. Chevy is getting in on the action with the release of the 2020 Trailblazer and 2020 Tracker, two small SUVs designed to tempt younger buyers with sharp style and loads of practicality. However, does either one have what it takes?

PostHeaderIcon The 2020 Renault K-ZE EV Showed up in Shanghai Ready for Production

.split630820

Six months after it made its debut as a concept car at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, the Renault K-ZE broke cover in production form at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. The tiny electric crossover was designed in China as part of the eGT New Energy Automotive Co. Ltd. joint venture between the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance and local carmaker Dongfeng.

PostHeaderIcon The 2020 Lotus Evora GT4 Concept Previews The Official 2020 Race Car

The Lotus Evora has been around for a fair few years, hasn’t it? It was introduced a decade ago and, since then, not much has changed about what was Evo Magazine’s Car of the Year in 2009. Now, however, Lotus tries to remind us that the Evora is yet to kick the bucket by introducing a revised GT4-spec racing version. The Evora GT4 Concept is also a way for Lotus to announce that it’s launching the Lotus Driving Academy in China and will go on a tour with its new Chinese works drivers to showcase the car’s prowess.

For starters, let me tell you this isn’t really a concept – not like, say, the Volkswagen I.D. Roomzz is a concept. I mean just look at it, for all intents and purposes it looks ready to race. It doesn’t have cartoonishly large wheels or anything that could be considered out of order on a racing car. What it is, is the updated version of the Evora Cup GT4. The Cup GT4 model was based on the 2009 Lotus Evora Type 124 Prototype that previewed Lotus’ambitions to return to GT-based endurance racing. Now, the Evora looks meaner than ever, and we may see it race Stateside too, as well as in Europe.

PostHeaderIcon The 2020 Karma Revero GT Features 535 Horsepower of BMW-Powered Goodness

The Karma nameplate has a rather checkered past, first appearing on an ill-fated hybrid GT sedan from Fisker Automotive in the late 2000s. After Fisker Automotive went bankrupt in 2013, the China-based Wanxiang Group Corporation purchased the assets, renamed the company Karma Automotive, and set about fixing the vehicle’s many lingering issues. Now, five years later at Auto Shanghai, Karma Automotive is ready to reveal the fruits of its labor with three new models that springboard off the original Karma’s impressive design.

PostHeaderIcon The 2020 Karma Pininfarina GT Coupe is a Gorgeous EV

Automotive history books are littered with stories of cars with European bodies and American running gear, commissioned by American companies, many of which were very good. Cases of successful fusion that resulted in some very pretty limited run cars like the Hudson Italia, the Scaglietti Corvette and, with that in mind, we give you the spectacular Karma Pininfarina GT Coupe that was just unveiled at the 2019 Shanghai auto show. Yet another name to add to that list.
