Spy Shots Of New BMW 1-Series

The marvelous next-generation BMW 1-Series has been seen driving around in Munich, Germany yet again. Though the car is still covered in some very odd swirlies, we can see that the basic shape hasn’t changed a whole lot. For those of you who are keen BMW buffs, you will have noticed that this is a five-door model. We have only ever received the coupe and convertible in the U.S., so chances are we will not be seeing this five-door over here any time soon.
The headlights appear to be sloped back and stretched along the top of the fender, similar to what we see on the 5-Series. It’s also clear that there is a wider grille that has been pushed forward, like most of BMW’s current sedans. In total, the new 1-Series seems to be taking most of the design elements from the new BMW models.
Some sources have indicated that a new turbocharged motor might live under the hood. We hope that it’s the new N55 twin-scroll single-turbo, but one can never be sure at this time.
We are going to assume that the car is still rear-wheel drive, not that anybody actually knows it is anyway. BMW did hint that they might make it a front-wheel drive machine, but it doesn’t appear to have happened. The car should be here around 2012.

New Renderings Of The Renault Alpine DeZir

After reading the title you might be wondering why should you care about a car that you can’t even buy in the United States. The answer is simple really, because you never know when Renault will return to our shores and, if they do, the new Alpine might lead their charge.
Even if this car doesn’t make it to America, it sure is special. The Alpine has a special place in the company’s history. It was produced between 1986 and 1991 and it was the first car launched under Renault ownership of the Alpine company. In 1991, a new Alpine, the A610, was produced until 1995.
Both of these machines were not sales successes, despite their great looks. The A610 was loved by the motoring press and it even got the approval of Top Gear, but all the accolades in the world couldn’t save it.
Renault, despite their poor sales success, is hoping to bring the Alpine sports car back. The car might make an appearance at the Paris Auto Show, but those are only rumors at this point.
According to Auto, Motor, und Sport, the production version of the Alpine could be in showrooms around 2012. It will likely be called the DeZir and it could be a less extreme replacement of the Renault Spider.

2012 Ford Taurus SHO To Have 400 Horsepower?

The world of automotive snooping is a unique one. There are unnamed sources giving out secrets and pictures taken of cars wrapped in interesting material. This latest photo is no different. It’s clearly a Ford Taurus, but Brenda Priddy says that this is not your everyday Ford. The SHO wheels and the dual chrome exhaust tips tell us a different story.
For 2012, designers wanted to give the high-performance Taurus a unique look. Priddy’s sources are saying that this new SHO will pack 400 horsepower from the 3.5-liter EcoBoost motor.
From the photos we have, you can see an updated grille, but the rest is mostly the same. Priddy says that a completely updated car isn’t expected until 2015.
We’re not sold on all of this new information. There is no clear evidence that there is a new motor under the hood. Ford appears to be hot weather testing, which could mean there is a new motor or it could mean they are testing the new grilles airflow in hot weather. We’ll have to wait until we get some serious proof.

Strange looking Chevrolet Corvette spied testing

GM has already denied rumors about a future mid-engined Corvette, but Jalopnik has some spy pictures of a very strange looking sports car. This spied Corvette features an extended wheelbase Corvette with modified bodywork and a lot of space behind the front seats.
We do not know for sure, but considering the manufacturer plates, we presume this is a testing mule of the future generation Corvette C7.
The guy who caught this car testing said: “It’s a hybrid mule, it has narrow width front tires, extended body to accommodate the drivetrain (Corvette has a rear transmission), and, interestingly, a plug outlet cover on the ass of it? The front wheels also do not match the rear wheels. Just my thought…. since GM mentioned a hybrid Corvette sounds possible.”
The future C7 will go into production in April of 2012 and will then go on sale for the 2013 model year. As previously reported, its exterior design will be inspired by the Stingray concept.
Update: Some readers have pointed out that the manufacturer plate on this vehicle is not from Michigan, as all GM test vehicles usually are. It seems the California manufacturer plate 44699 belongs to Fisker. This should be enough to put GM out of the equation and assign this car to the Fisker company. That also explains the rear plug, as Fisker is primarily focusing on electric cars.

New Lancia Stratos spied testing

If you have been following the automotive industry, then you probably already know that Lancia is preparing a new Stratos model. At first it was thought that the model seen testing was just a little project being worked on by a European industrialist, but rumors are suggesting that the Stratos model is definitely in the works. And these latest spy shots seem to be the proof you might have needed to believe them.
The new Lancia Stratos will be based on the structure and running gear of the Ferrari F430 Scuderia and will be unveiled later this year. It will weight less than 1200kg and the Scuderia’s engine will be lightly tuned for its application in the Stratos.
The Stratos was originally conceived as a rally car and was designed by Bertone. It was powered by a Dino sourced engine, with an output of 280 HP, but possible to be updated to 560 HP when a single KKK turbocharger was added. There were only 492 units ever made, so the Stratos is very rare to this day. In 1978, Bertone created and designed a concept car based on the Stratos called the Sibilo, although it was never intended for production.

Chevrolet Camaro Z28 caught testing next to a Shelby GT500

Listen, we know that not everyone is a big fan of the Chevrolet Camaro. It’s not something we understand, but it’s a fact and we can live with it. Now, not liking the upcoming Camaro Z28 is just plain ridiculous. It’s not that we only favor the Camaro though. It’s really more of a good old fashioned muscle thing. That being said, we were thrilled to find the Camaro Z28 testing next to none other than the Ford Shelby GT500. It’s like heaven on a street.
The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 will feature a 6.2L LSA V8 engine, even though the Corvette ZR1’s 638 hp LS9 was cruising around the rumor mill for awhile. The awesome news regarding the new Camaro’s engine is that it will more than likely feature more than the 556hp found in the Cadillac CTS-V. Stopping power will come from the 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers.
The future Camaro will be distinguished by enlarged air intakes at the extreme, a larger bubble on the hood to make room for the supersized engine, rims inspired by the ones from the CTS-V, and 20″ wheels.
The fact that it was caught testing next to the Shelby is juicy enough for us to salivate on for quite awhile. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to pin these two muscle cars together. The new Camaro Z28 is expected to go on sale in 2011.

The Next Porsche 911 Rendered

The next Porsche 911 will be revealed next year at the Frankfurt Motor Show and we can’t wait. Until then, we have Autocar to give us a look at what the next 911, codenamed the 991, might look like.
Porsche is hoping to win back a few customers that might have gone off to drive a Ferrari or any other Italian product. This new machine should cement the company’s role with Volkswagen.
The 991 will be a heavily re-engineered product that should go on sale around October 2011 in the United Kingdom. The exterior will get redone – in that typical Porsche way – and there will be a more powerful and more fuel-efficient flat-six motor.
The prices will rise, as the company wants to move the car up in the market in order to make room for a new entry-level model. Porsche engineers hope that this 991 model will be good enough to carry on through 2017, when the next update is due.

Trio of 2011 BMW 6-Series convertibles spied in Europe

A convoy of three 2011 6-Series Convertibles was spotted by some German auto enthusiasts on the Autobahn, testing at speeds exceeding 160 mph. Last time we saw the new 6-Series testing it was at the renowned Nurburgring race track; now the 6 series takes on the high-speed tarmac of the German Autobahn.
Usually prototypes such as this one are captured by professional spy photographers; however, this time the shots have come in from a member of M5Board driving a modified M3.
This particular trio of BMW prototypes happens to consist of three different 6-Series models. One model sports the same square exhaust tips that we saw on the Nurburgring 6-Series; presumably the high performance model as suggested by a passenger in the video.
The new 6-Series features styling fairly similar to that of the GranCoupe Concept, but we expect the new 6-Series won’t veer to far off from the old design thanks to BMW’s tentative designers.

New spy shots of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera Spyder

Back in June a mystery Gallardo Spyder prototype was caught testing at Nurburgring. Now the car is testing again, only this time we know what it is. Check out the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera Spyder.
The prototype caught testing features the same wheels, diffuser, and rear bumper as the Superleggera model, but has a smaller rear wing. Its coupe brother is powered by a 5.2 liter V10 engine that delivers an incredible 570 hp. The result is a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and from 0 to 124 mph in about 10.2 seconds later. Top speed goes up to 202 mph. Expect the roadster version to deliver the same performance, with most likely a lower top speed due to the aerodynamics of the fabric top.
The Superleggera is all about losing weight, so expect the roadster version to also focus on that same idea, but with a little extra for the addition of the top’s weight. However, total weight will be kept in the 3000 lbs area.

Remember when the M5 was caught testing and some sly cat took a picture of its engine? Well, it’s been quite some time since then and we have yet to see any more photos of the M5 in the wild, but somebody decided to change all that by leaving the new M5 in a parking lot in what appears to be a rest area or a gas station.
We can see the new production wheels, the new shift knob, and the meaty looking Pirelli tires. There are new interior shots that show new seats and a tachometer with a reduced redline.
Under the hood is a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that will put out around 555 horsepower. That will make this model far more powerful than the old model and not to mention, far better looking.
The chassis will likely be aluminum and there should be loads of carbon fiber parts. The new M5 will also get an electronically controlled limited slip differential and Dynamic Performance Control.
The official car will debut at the Paris Motor Show.

Subaru FT-86 sports car rendered

Everyone has played enough with the idea of the Toyota FT-86. We have all seen renderings of the future sportscar and have even been privy to a few rumors circulating, but were eventually squashed by Dr. Shigeyuki Hori, Project General Manager for the Sports Vehicle Management division and Kazuo Okino, Group manager for the same division. They state that the Toyota FT-86 will be ready by November 2011, and not the 2013 date that was rumored, and that it will be very close to the Toyota/Subaru concept version that debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show this year. Well, the fans have had it and now we are moving on to Subaru’s version of the FT-86 sports car which has managed to stay under the radar until now.
The two versions of the FT-86 will use similar technology since the concept was a collaboration between the two companies, but Subaru’s version, compared to the Toyota version, will be sportier and will develop much higher performance. The Subaru model will be powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat four engine that will develop around 200 HP, however the STI version will use a turbocharged powerplant with around 260 HP. Both versions will use a six-speed manual gearbox. The two versions will be distinguished by bumpers, front grilles, and wheels.
The new sports car is already testing at the Nürburgring race track, so expect the official debut to occur sometime soon. When it does go on sale, prices will range from $30k to $40k.

Dodge Avenger gets a facelift

There’s been some vital talk surrounding the Avenger/Sebring duo and whether or not significant changes need to be made to them. Diehard Avenger/Sebring fans, most of which probably only rent them during their vacations, will say the cars are great just the way they are. Others, we would tend to say most, believe these two models are just plain tired. Unfortunately, until now, we hadn’t heard anything concrete on the updates that are being made on them other than a reworked suspension and some upgrades in the interior.
Thankfully, the guys over at Secret New Cars were able to get a few spy shots of the next generation Avenger. The main focus of the shots is the heavily cladded front end leading us to believe that the next Avenger will be sporting a whole new face. We anticipate a new grill and a new front bumper as well as some new headlights. Other than that, the Avenger will pretty much stay the same. Maybe, eventually, Dodge will decide it’s time for a complete remodel. We just hope the car doesn’t completely die out before that happens. Then again, we really wouldn’t care if it did.

A Look At The BMW MegaCity Vehicle

BMW has never been a company of conservative designers. After all, this was the company that hired Chris Bangle to design their models, including the infamous 7-Series with the massive rear end. The same design was used on the 3-Series and the 5-Series, and each was criticized by the automotive media.
We admire them for their bold adventures and we liked the 5- and 3-Series. There have been some which were plain awful, like the 5-Series GT, but overall things have been decent.
BMW engineers have taken a turn to the right with a new MegaCity Vehicle (MCV) electric machine. This will be another green car that looks like it was taken straight out of the future for BMW. Remember the Vision Plug-In Hybrid and the Active E? A word of advice for BMW, you won’t make much money creating concepts. It’s time to put one of these into production. Maybe they should just start with the MCV.

2011 Nissan GT-R Spec M spied at Nurburgring

The Nissan GT-R Spec M has been the object of desire for many since rumors started circulating that Nissan was planning for a modified “Godzilla” in the near future. Back in March, Nissan confirmed those rumors and announced that the Spec M would make its appearance sometime this winter. Fortunately, those with a taste for the fast and scrumptious will be able to feast their eyes on the Spec M as it performs some testing on the Nurburgring, courtesy of the boys over at Auto Motor Und Sport.
The future Spec M is based on the GT-R SpecV and will receive an aerodynamic package and a new interior. This interior is rumored to be highly customizable to the customer’s every need and want. The Spec M will also be getting ripple control shock absorbers, a refined suspension, and an optional spoiler package. Customers can also opt for an aluminum or wood grain trim and a choice of seat colors.
Official specs have yet to be released for the GT-R Spec M, but we should see some sort of performance upgrade to go along with the new front bumper, new lower air intakes, and the new exhaust system.
The price for the 2011 Nissan GT-R Spec M is said to be around $140,000.

2012 BMW 1 Series Spied!

Ah, we love seeing pictures of prototypes with their wild white and black wraps. Although we barely have a clue on what the final production model will look like from these famous spy shots, it does look like the new 1 series 5-door will stay true to the original that debuted in Europe back in 2004. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to the consumer.
The new 1 series will come out as a 5-door hatchback first with a 3-door following sometime after that. It is rumored that this 1-series will improve on the not-so-roomy back seat of the model and will have a longer wheelbase and wider track. Although these bodystyles have not been available in the States, there’s a strong possibility they will jump the pond to rival the new Audi A3. The new 1 series will keep its RWD layout and its 4.0 liter four-cylinder engine, with later versions appearing in the 140-180 hp range. A turbo and diesel in the 300 hp range will also be released. An engine stop-start system, an electrical-regenerative system, and the new EfficientDynamics technologies will more than likely appear in this new model as well.
The new BMW 1 series is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2011. Expect prices to be in the same range as the current 1 series models which start at $29,150.

2013 Chevrolet C7 Corvette Rendering

There have been quite a few talks of the next C7 Corvette and those talks have been circulating for some time now. In fact, there have been so many talks that Chevrolet chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, even had a few words to say in defense of the next generation C7. But with all of those talks, there still aren’t too many hard facts, leaving everyone with plenty of opportunities to speculate.
This speculation comes to us from MotorAuthority and it is a rendering of the 2013 Corvette as drawn up by Schulte Design. It draws inspiration from the Stingray Concept as seen in the Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen movie and brings forth the egg-crate grille, vertical slat headlights, side vents, and the jet-fighter glasshouse. Adding some truth to speculation, this rendering also includes a split rear window that will be a part of the next C7 according to GM’s product design head, Ed Welburn.
Very little details are known as to the engine options for the Corvette. GM says there have been talks about a 440-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 version of the next-gen GM small block engine, but others say a smaller, forced induction engine may also be possible. We think Chevrolet is going to keep the lid tightly closed on this one until the car debuts in late 2011. Sales should begin in early 2012.

Photos of Audi A7 Leaked In Advance Of Public Unveiling

The 2011 Audi A7 is scheduled to be unveiled tomorrow, but as is the case with the Internet these days, you can always count on something being leaked in advance of the big day.
And so, here we are, a few days before the new A7 Sportback’s official debut and leaked photos of the car are already proliferating the Web. Can’t say we’re surprised. While we weren’t all that surprised with how the new A7 looks like given that it took a few styling cues from the A7 Sportback concept that we all saw at the 2009 North American Auto Show, there are still elements of the car that have been tweaked to give it an original look.
Among the notable features of the car – and something that’s becoming a staple among Audis these days – includes a new and aggressive bumper, unmistakable Audi LED headlights, and a single block grille. Meanwhile, the interior of the 2011 A7 Sportback comes with a pop-up navigation system, wooden trims – including those on the dashboard – posh leather upholstery, redesigned doorpads, and a slightly tweaked center console that gives the A7 an infused look of luxury and comfort.
In any event, the new A7 Sportback will make its official debut tomorrow so people won’t have to wait long to see Audi’s new luxury baby in the flesh.

Ford has one more teaser of the 2011 Explorer to show us

The good news is that the unveiling of the 2011 Ford Explorer is just one day away. The bad news is, with one day before the unveiling, we don’t know how many more teasers of the new SUV we can stomach from these guys.
Okay, it’s not that we don’t appreciate the effort they give out, but at some point, the whole definition of ‘teasing’ a vehicle loses its meaning when you come out with one every other day – or so it seems.
We can only be teased for so long without the whole thing becoming ridiculous and in the case of the 2011 Explorer, we’ve seen just about enough teasing of it – and, unwittingly, the front office execs and their smiling faces on some of the photos – that it’s becoming a little, shall we say, repetitive.
Thankfully, we’ll all be spared from anymore of this on the 26th of July, at which time Ford will officially take the covers off of the SUV on their Facebook page. Now, here’s to hoping that July 26 comes fast enough, or we might be treated to yet another ho-hum teaser photo.
