PostHeaderIcon Clarkson, Hammond and May Spotted in a Bigfoot Mercedes!

clarkson-mercedes-surey

So while the new Top Gear crew is sweating out of their heads putting together the first episodes for their debut season filming in America and South Africa, the old TG boys – Clarkson, Hammond and May – seem to be having a lot of fun with their new Amazon show. Recently they were spotted sailing in Barbados and now they were caught driving around Surrey in a custom bigfoot Mercedes SLC.

So basically they are doing what they used to do on the previous show, only more of it as Amazon is an overall less restricted organization than the BBC. It is not likely they run of money on this show, no matter what they get up to. What’s particularly amazing is that Clarkson, Hammond and May do not seem to be even making an effort with the new program. It just looks like a big vacation for them, as opposed to what the new Top Gear team is going through, which looks like a drag even in the pictures.

So whatever Jezza, Slow, and Hamster are cooking, it’s going to be like the good old days with three overgrown children falling about and catching fire a lot. We know so far they are going to have a three-way with three hyper cars, do something with in the water in Barbados, and most likely have an off-road challenge of some kind, at least if this modified Mercedes SL convertible with its jacked-up ride height and massive monster truck wheels is any indication. Come to think of it, Clarkson getting canned was the best thing that could happen to him.

New Top Gear Cast

Following last week’s announcement regarding the addition of Matt LeBlanc to the the new Top Gear as co-host, the BBC has now revealed the full cast of presenters for the show. It’s a pretty diverse crew including Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris, Eddie Jordan, Sabine Schmitz,  and Rory Reid.

Now, this is Top Gear a team BBC could be happy with. It includes a person of color and a woman, plus various nationalities including American, British, German, even Pakistani (if what we’ve heard about Chris Harris being a Pakistani Brit is true).

This colorful group of presenters is led by Chris Evans who is the most famous of the bunch in the UK, while Matt LeBlanc will be in charge of adding a bit of sex appeal to the show and attract foreign viewers. Meanwhile Chris Harris and Sabine Schmitz will do most of the driving and sliding about in fast cars. As for ex-F1 star Eddie Jordan and journalist Rory Reid, well, who cares what they do in the show. They’re not interesting.

Chris Evans has also claimed The Stig, a Clarkson creation, for himself. Chances are he will only do the lap times and none of the shenanigans he got up to in the old Top Gear. The new TG is just too crowded for The Stig to really shine. The show will return on BBC on May 8.

PostHeaderIcon Chris Harris Indirectly Confirmed as Top Gear Co-host

chris-harris-top-gear-0

Following yesterday’s surprising news that American actor Matt LeBlanc has joined the cast of the new Top Gear, the lead host of the show sent out a tweet welcoming his new co-host and, probably inadvertently, revealing the other. If you look close at the picture Evans published, you see a very familiar face.

Yep, sitting pretty close to Chris Evans is the one and only Chris Harris, a man who’s been suspiciously busy lately but not with his usual job of releasing awesome review videos. They are trying keep this under wraps until the official announcement, but when you are photographed at the “weekly TG production meeting” with the lead host, it leaves very little to the imagination.

chris-harris-top-gear-1

That said, Chris Harris may not be one of the co-hosts, but as rumored, one of the many recurring presenters or contributors, as it were, doing the actual reviewing and sliding about in cars, while Evans and LeBlanc and maybe one other high-profile celebrity try to fool around like the old Top Gear boys, Clarkson, Hammond, and May. Meanwhile, the originals are busy settling in their new Amazon offices and filming the first season of their new show.

This is something we never thought we’d say, but This looks like the making of a proper car show feud!

Matt LeBlanc Joins New Top Gear

Wow, nobody saw this coming. BBC Top Gear announced today that American actor Matt LeBlanc, whom you may know better as Joey from Friends, will be presenting the new series alongside Chris Evans and a few other yet-to-be-announced media personalities.

Now, you may need some time to adjust to this news because, well, Matt LeBlanc? On Top Gear? WTF? What can he bring to the table apart from his fame as a Hollywood has-been (not that we think he is a has-been, but some people definitely think that)?

But before you make judgments based on your prejudices, or accuse a desperate BBC of trying too hard to jam the new Top Gear down people’s throat by buying celebrities, we should point out Matt LeBlanc could turn out to be a pretty good Top Gear presenter. The man is known petrolhead and most likely the only actor who knows what Gemballa is, since he has a Gemballa-tuned Porsche himself. What’s more, Matt was the fastest Star in a Reasonably Priced car, when that car was a Kia cee’d, setting a lap time of 1m 42.1s. So it could all turn out better than what we expect.

“As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I’m honoured and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter,” said Matt. “What a thrill!”

Chris Evans said of his new TG presenter: “Matt’s a lifelong fellow petrolhead and I’m thrilled he’s joining Top Gear. Acting out our craziest car notions on screen is a dream job and I know we’ll both be debating some epic road trip ideas. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to on screen later this year.”

PostHeaderIcon Aventador SV, 991 GT3 RS and McLaren 675LT in Lake District

lake-district-supercars

Top Gear’s new TV show might be off to a poor start, but their magazine is still going strong, probably because they never got mixed up with what was going on with the show. For the main feature of their February issue, the boys hit a wet Lake District in three of the latest, greatest super cars: Lamborghini Aventador SV, Porsche 991 GT3 RS and McLaren 675LT.

While you have to go get the magazine to read the whole story, the video below will give you a taste of what it’s like driving these magnificent machines on some of UK’s greatest driving roads. And don’t mind the wet. If anything, it makes things more interesting.

Just a quick recap of these cars specifications: Lamborghini Aventador SV is powered by a 740bhp V12 engine and boasts a single-clutch transmission. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. Porsche 991 GT3 RS packs a 500 horsepower flat-six unit with a dual-clutch PDK gearbox and takes just over three seconds to hit 60 mph. And as for the McLaren 675LT, this car features a 670 horsepower turbo V8 and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Zero to 60 in this car depends on where you set the power and handling switches, but you should be able to do it with launch control in about 2.9 seconds.

PostHeaderIcon Top Gear’s New Lead Host Is Prone to Car Sickness!

chris-evans-car-sick-0

The new Top Gear is off to a shabby start filming the new series. Turns out the show’s lead presenter, the famous Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, gets car sick when driven around a race track. That’s an issue, because it’s kind of like a surgeon getting sick at the sight of blood.

The new Top Gear crew is in America these days filming bits of their first season with Evans. One of these bits is evidently a review of the latest Audi R8 V10 and it includes a track test at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in which the other new presenter, the German Sabine Schmitz, puts the car through its paces with Evans in the passenger seat. And, well, that was when things went sort of wrong.

The crew had to stop filming when Chris Evans got a bit sick handling all the G Force Sabine forced upon him by cornering way too fast. The man was then photographed throwing up by the side of the track which is frankly a very poor spectacle for someone trusted with the job of making the world’s second-best motoring show (Clarkson, Hammond, and May’s new Amazon show will be the very best, obviously!).

If Evans can’t handle Schmitz’s precise driving style, how’s he going to fare drifting around the Top Gear track with Chris Harris?

PostHeaderIcon Chris Harris Joining New Top Gear

harris-happy

OK, this is just a rumor for the time being, but the social media is abuzz with news of Chris Harris joining the cast of the new Chris Evans-led Top Gear. Reports also mention German racing driver Sabine Schmitz and David Coulthard as the other co-presenters.

Chris Harris, undoubtedly one of the world’s top motoring journalists, is known for his technically brilliant and hugely amusing car reviews. He is also an accomplished track driver and an ace drifter. Lately he has been posting less and less videos on his YouTube channel, adding fuel to the fire of the aforementioned rumors. Although at this point they are more than just rumors as even Tiff Needell has taken to Twitter to vent his frustration that Harris is joining Top Gear and not Fifth Gear on which he even once made a guest appearance.

As for the other two possible new Top Gear presenters, the world is Evans is bringing in Sabine Schmitz whom you may remember as the Nurburgring Queen, the girl who beat Jeremy Clarkson around the Green Hell in a diesel Jaguar, drove a van around the same track faster than Porsches and Bimmers, and then took on the trio in an English versus German motoring program duel. The other is just David Coulthard.

New Top Gear

So while the old Top Gear crew – Clarkson, Hammond and May – are off doing live shows and making ads for their new employer, Amazon, the BBC is busy filing the new TG with Chris Evans. The presenter revealed during an interview that the first episode is scheduled to be aired on Sunday 8 May next year.

As for what we can expect from the new Top Gear, Evans revealed only a few tidbits such as an intercontinental journey to America. He remained tight-lipped on who would be presenting the show with him, reinforcing previous rumors that it could be a solo act, even though the American journey seems way too big for just one presenter, even one as good as Chris Evans. The Stig will be there, though.

Whatever the BBC and the broadcasting legend that is Evans have planned for the new Top Gear, they are going to have a hard time competing with Amazon’s new show with the ex-TG boys. We know they have filmed something with the hypercar holy trinity, and, well, it’s Clarkson, Hammond and May. They are like the Gods of TV motoring. All we want know is for them to be done with the live show nonsense so they can get filming!

PostHeaderIcon BBC Pays Homage to Clarkson with Christmas Special

Clarkson--May--Hammond

News emerged today that in spite of their rough divorce, the BBC is going to honor the memory of Jeremy Clarkson and his years of service to the corporation with a new Christmas Special called “Top Gear: From A to Z.” It will highlight Clarki’s career as the lead TG host.

After Clarkson’s dismissal following the infamous fracas – in which he punched a producer for his inability to procure warm food for him – the BBC said things that amounted to “Clarkson is not welcome here anymore in any shape or form.” So it is a bit of a surprise that they are going to release a full Christmas Special about him.

Could it be that the BBC is regretting firing Jezza? Are they missing all the money he and his colleagues, Hammond and Clarkson used to bring in? Are they jealous of Amazon who now owns the genius of this eccentric, angry, and slightly racist man? We don’t know and don’t care frankly. All we want is a new car show with the three stooges, whatever it’s called and wherever it’s aired.

So this holiday season keep an eye on BBC Two for a Top Gear last hurrah with Clarkson, Hammond, and May. Who knows what Chris Evans is cooking for the new TG? For all we know it could suck.

PostHeaderIcon Punched Top Gear Producer Suing Jeremy Clarkson

clarkson-sued

Just when we thought everybody had put the fracas behind them and moved on with their lives, news emerged that Oisin Tymon, the Top Gear producer Jeremy Clarkson punched for his inability to procure hot food for him, is suing the presenter and the BBC.

In what appears to be a make-a-quick-buck attempt, Oisin Tymon and his lawyers are seeking one hundred thousand pounds in damages for racial discrimination, verbal abuse and personal injury. They evidently thought that sum is reasonable enough for the defendants to want to pay up and settle, which is how these cases usually play out. If they don’t settle, the case will head to a full employment tribunal and could take months to get processed.

So yes, the whole thing stinks a bit, but you can’t really blame Oisin Tymon, for he is the victim here. To be honest you can’t even blame the BBC for firing Jeremy Clarkson and not wanting to have anything to do him anymore. They covered up his racial slurs and bigoted comments for as long as they could. But he bodily harmed a producer, well, that’s not something you can close your eyes on, no matter how much you like the man’s character and his work as a presenter.

Jeremy Clarkson-Amazon-Ad

Yep, guess who’s back? Looks like the filming for the new Amazon motoring show starring Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond – formerly known as Top Gear trio – is well underway and they are gearing up for launch in the near future. Here’s the first commercial Jezza has made for Amazon “Fire Stick” thingy in which he also promotes the show.

Amazon’s Fire Stick apparently helped Jeremy Clarkson a lot during his “unbusy” period. He had so much good stuff to watch, it stopped him from getting depressed and jumping off a bridge. Then Amazon came along and hired him, reportedly for a very, very handsome fee. So things are good again in the Clarkson world.

In this commercial Clarkson also takes an ever so gentle stab at his former employer by pulling one of his classic disgusted faces when BBC iPlayer app shows up on the screen.

PostHeaderIcon New Top Gear to Have an Entirely New Format

New Top Gear

Chris Evans, the host of the new Top Gear, has finally spoken a few words about the show and how he is going about “the biggest job” he’s ever had in his life. According to Evans who spoke to reporters in Cannes, the new Top Gear won’t use same three-presenter format.

“I’m a solo artist,” says Chris Evans who believes they are going to need a completely new approach to the show, otherwise it will fail. Evans wants to steer clear of anything that would be considered copying the old Top Gear. One would imagine that has something to do with the fact that the old TG trio, Hammond, May and Clarkson, are in the process of making their own three-man show.

As to what the new Top Gear will look like, Evans does not say. “We’re going to change that,” he said. “I can’t tell you into what. I know, by the way, but I can’t say at the moment.” That is all he is going to say about it for now. Even the Stig is not sure he is going to have a job in the new show. He was with Evans in Cannes, but he is kind of the symbol of old TG, which Evans want to do away with.

“They’re the Three Stooges, they are the Bee Gees, they are that and I’m not, I’m me,” Chris Evans said. “I’m a solo artist at the moment, I’m on my own, so do I form a band or not?”

PostHeaderIcon Top Gear’s Stig Unveils Forza-Themed Ford Focus RS

Forza-Ford Focus RS-1

Celebrating the European debut of Forza Motorsport 6 at the 2015 Gamescom exhibition in Cologne, Germany, Xbox teamed up with Ford to host a special exhibit of their own from whose buzz the game would benefit big time. They enlisted the services of Top Gear’s Stig who unveiled a Forza-inspired Ford Focus RS at special Microsoft event prior to the show.

That dude probably wan’t the real Stig, just some guy dressed like him. But the Ford Focus RS he brought along was real, and it will be on display during Gamescom along with the all-new Ford GT supercar which has been on a grand tour of Europe this past few weeks.

The Ford Focus RS on display at the show features a unique livery designed by players of Forza Motorsport. The 350PS all-wheel-drive hot hatch, which also has a drift mode, is an amazing car in its own right. But its vigor sort of pales when you put it next to something like the Ford GT, with its out of this world design, carbon fiber construction, and 600PS EcoBoost V6 engine.

Forza-Ford Focus RS-2

“In Forza Motorsport 6, racing and gaming enthusiasts all over the world will be the first to experience Ford’s new ultra-high-performance supercar, the Ford GT,” said Dan Greenawalt, creative director at Turn 10 Studios in Redmond, Washington, U.S. “In Cologne we’re excited to showcase the real all-new Focus RS clad in a special paint scheme created by the Forza community. During Gamescom, gamers will also get to see the Forza Motorsport 6 cover-car Ford GT in person.”

PostHeaderIcon Clarkson, Hammond and May Sign with Amazon for New Car Show

clarkson-hammond-may-new-show

So after months of uncertainty about what will become of the former Top Gear trio, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, they announced on Twitter today that they now have a new employer. The boys have signed with Amazon Prime Video for a new car show, to be produced at former TG boss Andy Wilman.

Nothing is as yet known about the format of the show and its ingredients, but chances are Clarkson, Hammond and May will pick up where left off at Top Gear. These guys have enough feather in their caps for us not to worry about the quality of the new show. In fact, it could end up being much better than Top Gear since online media is a lot less, well, conservative than an organization like the BBC. Jeremy was quoted likening leaving the BBC and joining Amazon to climbing “out of a bi-plane and into a spaceship.”

Clarkson, Hammond and May’s new car show has no name yet, but the announcement alone is enough to cause the new Top Gear and its head host Chris Evans sleepless nights from now on. Well, unless it turns out Amazon is only releasing the show in select regions, or if they somehow limit its availability. But hey, the boys are back and it’s time to celebrate!

PostHeaderIcon This Is What The New Top Gear Will Look Like

New Top Gear

Yep, it’s pretty much the same as the old Top Gear. There will be lots of super car, lots of sliding about, clouds moving backwards, metaphors getting tortured, and some celebrities too. What it will lack is Clarkson’s wit and humor, Hammond’s hilarious facial expressions, and May’s gentlemanly manners.

Top Gear may have canned Clarkson, but they are keeping his best invention, the Stig. And he is apparently playing a bigger role in the new Top Gear, helping with car reviews by testing doors, wipers, and boots:

It was a very ballsy move for Chris Evans to replace Jeremy Clarkson as the head presenter. He is an accomplished radio and TV personality, sure, but he looks too… well, normal for this job. Jezza was – is, he ain’t dead yet! – properly insane, a self-proclaimed idiot, and that was the main reason why he was so damn entertaining to watch. Things are going to be hard for Evans at Top Gear, especially as Clarkson, Hammond and May are only steps away from landing their own car show, most likely on ITV. Still, we commend Mr. Evans for accepting this enormous challenge.

“I honestly didn’t think I would get the phone call. I was amazed that I did. I ruled myself out, because I didn’t want to be part of all the nonsense that was going on,” said Evans in an interview with the August issue of Top Gear Magazine. “But then the situation changed, and I wasn’t stepping on anybody’s graves or toes.

“[But] if I make television programmes for a living, and love motor cars, and love the biggest challenge in the world, why wouldn’t I do it?”

PostHeaderIcon Clarkson Laps Top Gear Track One Last Time

clarkson-last-top-gear-lap

So yesterday, as promised, Jeremy Clarkson went to Dunsfold Aerodrome to have one last lap of Top Gear test track built within the facility’s airstrips. Jezza’s farewell lap was mainly a charity thing which, according to the man himself, raised “a load of cash for a good cause.”

No videos of Clarkson’s last Top Gear lap has surfaced yet, but he published the picture above on Twitter showing him trying to work out what would be the best car for the occasion: Mercedes AMG GT, Ferrari LaFerrari, or Ferrari 488 GTB.

After the lap was done Clarkson tweeted: “My last ever lap of the Top Gear track is done. Bit sad leaving the place for the final time.” Then another photo of him emerged showing Marino Franchitti and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason the way around the Top Gear track in a Volvo, which was probably a part of the charity thing mentioned before.

As for the final thoughts that passed the unique mind of Clarkson after his last ever lap of the Top Gear test track, well, it was vintage Jezza:

I did the motherfucker of all tail slides through Chicago.”

PostHeaderIcon Top Gear Lists Top Caravan Crashes of Clarkson Era

Top 10 Caravan Crashes

In a new video Top Gear’s Youtube channel, which recently passed one billion views, has put together a montage marking the top caravan crashes from the show’s golden era with Clarkson, Hammond, and May. It is both sad and hilarious.

They have cut the boys out of the footage (you only see the back of Hammond’s head in one of the shots), but still, these caravan crashes bring back a lot of fond memories. Do you agree with Top Gear’s number one choice?

To give you an update on what’s going on in the world of Top Gear and Clarkson, Hammond and May, the show is being renovated with a new cast headed by Chris Evans and maybe a female presenter for the first time. As for the boys, they are currently busy with their live tour, after which they are said to be launching an all-new car show, most likely on Netflix. It will be interesting to see Top Gear versus a Clarkson in a different show. It will prove, once and for all, that TG will be nothing without good ol’ Clarki!

PostHeaderIcon Chris Evans Reveals How He Got the Top Gear Gig

Evans-TG

If you are even remotely interested in cars, or television, you have probably heard that Chris Evans has been named as the replacement for Jeremy Clarkson to host a new version of Top Gear. So far it seems the fans are happy with BBC’s choice as we’ve been hearing nothing but compliments and congratulations for the white-haired man.

This is obviously a very huge move for both Chris Evans and the BBC, so the new Top Gear presenter decided to talk directly to the fans in his BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show and tell them how he landed the job and what went into making that decision. Yes, Chris did talk to Jeremy, Richard and James. Well, he texted them, because that’s what you do in this day and age.

So here’s a transcript of Chris’ words thanks to the good folks at TopGear.com:

Last Thursday, I got a text from Mark Linsey, who is head of entertainment for BBC TV. Basically it said, “Would you be interested at all in having a Top Gear conversation?”

I had never been offered the Top Gear job before that. […] So I called Mark Linsey back, and Mark explained to me that the situation had changed in the last 24 hours because Richard and James had finally ruled themselves out of a return to Top Gear.

Before that, they were very much considering returning. The BBC had made an offer to them, I was aware of that. And I wanted them to return, wanted Top Gear to carry on, as a fan. And I thought, honestly, as a betting man, that was going to happen.

So whenever I said I categorically rule myself out of ‘running for office’ […] it was because I didn’t want to be a pawn in a chess game involving two – and in fact three, including Jeremy – of my friends.

A few weeks ago, James and I went on holiday together – me and my family, and him and his partner – for three days in France. We talked about what he might do, what Jeremy might do and what Richard might do… for most of the three days, if I’m honest with you.

I did not want to be involved in bookies’ odds and all that kind of stuff, because that’s not what the situation needed. I had to get out of that madness, and let other people get involved in that if they wanted to.

But it all changed, as I say, on Wednesday. Mark phoned me up and said, “That’s [James and Richard returning] not going to happen, are you up for it?” At which point I said, “Can I think about it? I’ll call you back…”

I talked to Will [MacDonald] about it. Will and my wife were the only two people I told. We decided that what I do for a living is radio and television and a bit of writing, and it [Top Gear] is the biggest television show in the world. It’s my favourite television show of all time, you know how much of a fan I am of the show.

I love producing […] so I said yes. We had our first meeting about it on Friday, and that was basically that. The weekend was strange and calm and exciting.

[…] Yesterday was a very interesting day. We decided we were going to announce it at 7.15[pm] on the BBC2 Twitter feed. We pressed the button […] and waited for our phones to melt, and that’s exactly what happened.

Before it was announced, I texted Jeremy and James and Richard and Andy [Wilman], and I’ve heard back from all of them.

James called me back straight away, within a minute of me texting him to have a chat, and we’re going to meet up today and tomorrow and talk about things. Who knows what might happen there?

And then Jeremy texted me. He said, “I knew they would. […] I knew you would, best of luck,” and gave me a piece of advice, which I’m not going to repeat on the radio, to be honest.

Then Richard texted me back […]. He said, “You were designed and built for that job and it’ll be great. It was also always the BBC’s very best option.”

[…] So there you go, that’s it. Now all I need to do is remember to breathe…
