PostHeaderIcon TVR Gets Huge Investment From An Unlikely Source

The Welsh government has investing £500,000 ($690,000) to TVR, acquiring a three-percent stake in the British automaker. The government is also sending a £2 million loan to the company and purchased the Ebbw Vale production facility where TVR plan to produce its current and future models, including the recently launched Griffith sports coupé.

“The investment deal between TVR and the Welsh government isn’t actually a new development”

The investment deal between TVR and the Welsh government isn’t actually a new development. In fact, TVR boss confirmed to Autocar that the government’s investment actually happened back in March 2016. Predictably, politics played a role in the delayed announcement. The Welsh Conservative party (the opposition to Wales’ leading Labour party) was identified as being the cause of delay, primarily because it wanted assurances that public money would be protected in the deal with TVR.

With that wrinkle already sorted out, the deal is now being made public, opening the door for TVR to proceed with the development of the 500-horsepower Griffith at the Ebbw Vale factory that the government purchased for an undisclosed amount last month.

“With the investment, loan, and new facility in place, TVR plans to turn its attention to building the first pilot prototypes of the Griffith sports car”

While it’s not unusual for a national government to control stake in an automaker — the U.S. government actually owned a significant part of General Motors after the automaker filed bankruptcy in 2009 — it is, according to TVR boss Les Edgar, uncommon for the Welsh government to invest in a company that’s still trying to work its way back to relevancy. “In fact, I don’t think it’s ever happened before,” Edgar added. “I see it as a sign of their faith in TVR.”

With the investment, loan, and new facility in place, TVR plans to turn its attention to building the first pilot prototypes of the Griffith sports car. The company has said that production of the car is expected to start in the beginning of 2019.

That’s something we can look forward to now that TVR has the backing of the Welsh government.
Here’s to hoping that there are no hiccups along the way.

PostHeaderIcon Les Edgar Is Pleased Enough With The TVR Griffith To Drop Some Expletives

As an employee, there’s no better feeling in the world than seeing your boss crack a smile or pat you on the back, recognizing you for a job well done. The team behind TVR and the just-launched Griffith sports car may not have been in the vicinity of CEO Les Edgar when he took the sports car out for a spin, but judging by his reaction in driving the sports car, I’d say he approves enough of how the Griffith turned out.
He threw expletives left and right out of sheer excitement.

Such was his reaction when he was captured behind the wheel of the Griffith shortly after the sports car made its debut at the Goodwood Revival a few weeks ago. I don’t know the circumstances behind him driving the Griffith, but I do know that when he tickled the gas pedal and summoned the car’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine to come to life, the 500-horsepower more than obliged, eliciting a hearty curse word and a somewhat shocked look on the face of Edgar. The TVR boss’ excitement didn’t end there either as Edgar let out and dropped an excited F-bomb as he and his companion were making their way back to the Gordon Murray Design office.

It certainly looks like Edgar had a good time experiencing the Griffith in all its glory, and why wouldn’t he? By all accounts, the Griffith looks to be, at the very least, a proper sports car. It has a hearty V-8 engine that packs 500 horsepower, all of which goes to the rear wheels courtesy of a purist-loving six-speed manual transmission. No wonder Edgar had a look of surprise on his face when he floored the sports car. He probably didn’t expect it to be as good as it turned out. We’d be cursing with excitement, too, if we were in his position.

PostHeaderIcon TVR Griffith

Well, Folks, the day is here. TVR has shocked the world by debuting the new TVR Griffith at the Goodwood Revival. One of the most anticipated cars of the year, the Griffith has a lot to live up to, but luckily the team responsible for this piece of rolling artwork has managed to deliver a car that resides well above our expectations and should send marques like Aston Martin and Jaguar running for the hills. Featuring a look that reminds me of an FD-gen Mazda RX-7 on steroids, the Griffith features a stunning design, a 50:50 weight distribution, a Cosworth-enhanced V-8 that’s good for at least 400 ponies, and a Magnum XL gearbox that can handle as much as 700 pound-feet of torque. It’s beautiful iStream architecture provided by none other than Gordan Murray, paired with that beautiful carbon composite body means we’re talking about a car that isn’t only exceptionally light but exceptionally strong as well and could very well push TVR beyond being the brand it once was as it steps into the ring with the big boys for the first time in nearly two decades.

The car was presented for the very first time in Launched Edition spec, a model that will go for £90,000 or about $119,000 a current exchange rates. It boasts a full leather interior to go with custom wheels, a special paint selection, and a bespoke infotainment system. A good number of these have likely already been spoken for so if you’re hoping to get one of the first models that rolls off the line, you might want to get with TVR quickly as once they are spoken for, that’s it. Production is slated to start sometime in late 2018 with a total of 500 Launch Edition models on the bill. After that, you’ll be stuck with the standard production model, which will likely go for a bit more once in production and ready to hit the streets. So, with that in mind, we should start seeing the Griffith on the street in the next couple of years, so let’s talk more about this stunning masterpiece and see just what it brings to the table.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 TVR Griffith Goes Official

So after years of rumors and speculation TVR is now officially back and they have a new product to prove it. this is the all-new TVR Griffith and it’s a modern sports car inspired by the British sports car maker’s 70-year history. That means it has a fair bit of craziness in it.

Let’s start with the looks where 2018 TVR Griffith manages to be sleek and cool and trendy, but also brutal and harsh and angry. The front-end is a bit meh to be honest, but we absolutely love the rear of this car, which is macho as Lawrence Dallaglio’s jaw. Some of the awaesomest highlights of the design include the side exhausts which exit the front fenders, air vents integrated into the tail lights, retractable rear spoiler, and a motorsport-grade diffuser. A lot of thought and engineering has gone into shaping the Griffith and it is said to be excellent in terms of aerodynamics and downforce.

With a dry weight of 1,250 kg, 2018 TVR Griffith is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre Cosworth-enhanced V8 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. That is the TVR craziness we all love. Nobody uses a setup like this anymore, but these crazy Brits think they know better. The car has a power to eight ratio of 400bhp per tonne which is all the power figure they have given us so far. That is enough to give the Griffith a 0-60 mph sprint time of under four seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

Set for production in late 2018, TVR Griffith will have a starting price of £90,000 which is not bad, considering it has a carbon fiber chassis and a nice interior with leather and infotainment and stuff.

PostHeaderIcon The TVR T37 Sports Car Will Get A Manual Transmission, Or So This Teaser Shows

It’s been almost 20 years since TVR launched a sports car. Think about how long that’s been. A generation’s worth of gearheads know TVR as nothing but a fragment of days gone by, not realizing that one point in time, it was the creator of some of the most exciting British sports cars to hit the streets. Since the launch of the Tuscan in 1999, TVR has trudged through the mud of mediocrity, collapsing into administration in 2006 through numerous ownership changes. Fast forward to this year and things are finally looking up for TVR as it’s on course to present its first production sports car in 18 years. The car still doesn’t have an official name (it’s codenamed “T37”), but if recent teaser photos are any indication, the name can come later. What’s important is the car is set to make its debut at the Goodwood Revival this coming September.

TVR has released a number of revealing information about the car, but in true automotive fashion, it’s kept most of the details under wraps, opting to release a handful of teasers of the model, including this one featuring the sports car’s manual transmission. It’s admittedly not much to go by in the way of deciphering the car’s design, but the revelation of it coming with a manual transmission means that customers will have to make good use of their driving skills if they hope to drive the car up to its full potential.

PostHeaderIcon All-New TVR T37 Confirmed for Goodwood Revival Debut

tvr t37 interior

So we finally have a date and a venue for the debut of the all-new, reborn, resurrected, highly anticipated, probably awesome 2018 TVR T37. In its 70th anniversary the British marque will unveil the new sports car at the Goodwood Revival on 8th,9thand 10th September.

Announcing this, TVR has also released the first shot of the the new car’s interior, revealing a slim McLaren-like center console and, more importantly, a manual gear knob. Seeing this we can’t help thinking They are truthful when they say the new TVR T37 wil be a true TVR, although one that is no longer plagued by reliability issues or wayward handling. As long as they can make the T37 feel as mean and angry and brutal as, say, the Sagaris, this is a job done in our book.

TVR T37 has been designed and developed in collaboration with Gordon Murray Design, a name associated with one of the greatet cars in the all of human history, McLaren F1. Gordon Murray says : “We developed the new TVR as a product that builds on all the magic and excitement of our hand-crafted British motor cars of yesteryear. We combined this with a most rigorous engineering and assembly process design to ensure outstanding consistency, build quality and reliability.”

Once a successful company known for building some of Britain’s most exciting sports cars, it’sTVR has had it rough over the last two decades, struggling to come up with new designs after the release of the Tuscan in 1999. Purchased by 24-year-old Nikolay Smolensky in 2004, TVR collapsed in a little more than two years, closing its factories and going into administration by December 2006. After six more years of speculation that the brand might return to the market, Smolensky sold his ownership of TVR to TVR Automotive Ltd, a British company led by Les Edgar, in 2013. Come 2017 and TVR is ready to launch its first new sports car in almost two decades.

Set to break cover at the Goodwood Revival in September, the new-generation TVR is being developed under codename T37, will use a V-8 powerplant, and will be offered with an optional carbon-fiber chassis. TVR also revealed that it the first-year allocation for its future sports car has been already sold out, which is an astonishing performance for an automaker that hasn’t built any cars in decades. How is this possible when this brand doesn’t have an actual product to show its future customers? Well, while TVR might not be as popular as Ferrari or Lamborghini globally, it enjoys a cult following in Britain. Moreover, TVR enthusiasts seem to trust Edgar, the man who has finally given them something to be excited about.

Update 9/5/2017: We have just received word that the TVR T37 will make its long-awaited global debut on Fri, September 8, 2017, at the Goodwood Revival Earls Court Motor Show as part of a celebration to mark TVR’s 70th Anniversary. It will debut at 8:30 BST, or 3:30am EST if you’re on this side of the pond. No further information has been released, but we’ll be sure to update you as more information becomes available.

PostHeaderIcon TVR to unveil its new sports car at Goodwood Revival

Recently revived, British sports car firm TVR has confirmed that its first vehicle in almost two decades will be unveiled at the 2017 Goodwood Revival in September. Developed under codename T37, in conjunction with Gordon Murray Design, TVR’s first new design since 1999 promises tremendous performance and a pure British design. TVR will become the first manufacturer to globally launch a new vehicle at the Goodwood Revival.

Not a lot is known about the T37 at this point, but TVR said the coupe will tip the scales at only 1,200 kg (2,645 pounds) and hit 60 mph in “less than four seconds.” Its top speed is estimated at 200 mph, a mark that very few supercars can reach. The sports car will also get its juice from a custom-made, 5.0-liter V-8 developed by Cosworth. With a power-to-weight ratio of 400 horsepower per tonne, the TVR should come with almost 500 horses on tap.

After six more years of speculation that the brand might return to the market, Smolensky sold his ownership of TVR to TVR Automotive Ltd, a British company led by Les Edgar, in 2013. Soon after that, Edgar announced that TVR will be revived as a pure British sports car brand with new vehicles to arrive by the end of the decade.

After two more years of silence, TVR slowly began to unveil details about its new product. Come 2016, and we already know that the next-generation TVR is being developed under codename T37, will use a V-8 powerplant, and will be offered with an optional carbon-fiber chassis. TVR also revealed that it the first-year allocation for its future sports car has been already sold out, which is an astonishing performance for an automaker that hasn’t built any cars in decades.

Although much of the car’s design is still a mystery, a clay prototype displayed at the 2016 London Motor Show and a teaser photo released by company confirm that the new sports car will feature the traditional TVR styling of the 1990s with design cues borrowed from the Sagaris. The covered silhouette is displayed alongside a 1960s TVR Griffith 400, which means that the Brits are considering a revival of the Griffith nameplate.

Either way, we are thrilled to see that TVR is closer than ever to making a comeback, which is why we decided to take a closer look at its upcoming sports car.

Updated 05/20/2016: TVR dropped a new teaser image for its upcoming sports car, and this time its a cutaway image that reveals the chassis of the upcoming “Griffith.” Continue reading to learn more about it.

PostHeaderIcon TVR Announces Launch Edition for New Sports Car

New-TVR

The rebooted TVR announced further details and specifications of their new sports car, to be launched later this year. The most exciting tidbit is that they will release a Launch Edition model with a carbon fibre chassis designed by the legendary Gordon Murray.

The new sports car will make use of the first-ever, full-production, carbon fibre construction by TVR with a platform that will underpin the next four production models. Looks like they are confident this time around things are going to be a lot better. This lightweight and cost-effective chassis is Gordon Murray’s own design built using iStream Carbon manufacturing process. It allows for making stand-alone tub and shell made from carbon fibre composite at a fraction of the cost of other methods.

The Launch Edition TVR will get the carbon chassis as standard, but subsequent production cars have to be specified with carbon fibre option package to get it. Otherwise they will be built from composites. Since they started taking deposits for the new car, the British automaker ha received 300+ orders.

Les Edgar, Chairman of TVR said: “Historically, carbon fibre has been reserved for motorsport and high-end supercars, but now TVR will be offering customers a slice of that technology at a fraction of the price. The spotlight has been on us from the start, and with the help of Gordon Murray Design and its innovative processes, we have made sure that our new sports car can really shine and deliver beyond expectations. The carbon manufacturing process really is a game changer, and one I’m delighted to offer to all of our early adopter Launch Edition customers within the package cost. I am sure those models will be much coveted, but carbon will continue to be available as a cost option.”

New TVR

So after months of nothing but speculations and rumor, the re-launched TVR is dishing out some details about their upcoming new sports car. They have created a ‘new car’ section on their website where they give a few vague clue as to what this product will be like and expect people to place a deposit based on it.

The thing is, the details they have revealed about the new TVR are juicy enough to persuade the most strong-headed among us to click the deposit button, even though it is not a hundred percent certain the car will make it into the production.

First off, there is this teaser image that’s hit the web, showing a super sexy coupe in the style of the old Sagaris but not as insane. So it hasn’t got slashes on the wings and bonnet, but you get large air scoops and side exhausts plus a very curvy roof. Then there is all the characteristics TVR has listed as selling points.

They begin with “British in every way,” assuring their fans they are not giving in to the current trends and will stand by their values and remain “true to TVR’s DNA and heritage.” The car is also going to be “incredible value for money” with an affordable Gordon Murray designed carbon fiber chassis. He is like the Martha Stewart of the car world. As for the real specs, the new TVR, to be launched in late 2016, will boast a V8 engine at the front manual transmission and rear wheel drive, and come in coupe and convertible guises.

PostHeaderIcon TVR Now Accepting Deposits for New 2017 Model

2017-tvr-sketch

Legendary British sports car maker TVR (named after a bloke called Trevor) is officially back in business, accepting deposit for an all-new model they are all set to launch in 2017. They say it was the “popular demand” that persuaded them to go ahead with the relaunch sooner than originally anticipated.

So TVR is back and they have an all-new product in the pipeline. But obviously they don’t have any money to build it, otherwise they would have at least released a concept and then ask people for a deposit. It’s a small deposit of £5,000 they are asking for, but still.

At any rate, the new TVR is not going to let you down, at least if the big names associated with the project are anything to go by. The brand-new model is being created in conjunction with Gordon Murray Design, and it will boast a bespoke Cosworth V8 engine, doubtless featuring the signature TVR growl. It will have a manual transmission and rear wheel drive, and will comes in both coupe and convertible body styles. Nothing else is known about the 2017 TVR at this moment.

The company has also announced that it will offer a limited quantity of reduced deposits (£2,500) to the club members during July as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Car Club.

John Chasey, Operations Director of TVR, says: “We’ve been totally blown away by the reaction to the new car. Our phone lines and online enquiry system went into meltdown when the news was announced, and we decided that we must begin to bring a structure to the enquiries and build a delivery pipeline well in advance of production. Volumes in year one will be limited as we ramp up production,  so this allows us to reward those individuals prepared to make a financial commitment at this early stage.”
