PostHeaderIcon Land Rover Discovery Sport Landmark Edition

Introduced in 2014 as a replacement for the Freelander, the Land Rover Discovery Sport needs only a few years to become the fastest-selling Land Rover of all time. The crossover’s popularity prompted Land Rover to create a range of special-edition models, the latest of which is called the Landmark Edition and it’s available for the 2018 model year.

Another reason why Land Rover chose the Discovery Sport to be the designated nameplate for special-edition model is because it was also the first model to be built on the company’s 70th birthday on 30 April. The vehicle will thus be used to support a number of projects in 2018, starting with a community resilience project in Scotland. The Landmark Edition adds unique color and trim combinations to the popular crossover, pairing them with a powerful version of the 2.0-liter Ingenium diesel engine. Let’s find out more about it below.

PostHeaderIcon The UK Bans BMW Ad For Depicting Dangerous Driving

When you consider the constant bombardment of advertising that we all must endure on a daily basis, it comes as no surprise that grabbing the attention of consumers is no easy feat. Bimmer thought it had the right recipe with this ad aimed at the U.K. market, but apparently, it violates the sensibilities of regulators by depicting “dangerous” and “irresponsible driving.”

PostHeaderIcon As Ford Cancels its Future Sedans in America, Honda Introduces the Civic Saloon to the U.K.

Honda’s new-gen Civic is quite the looker. Here in the States, we were lucky enough to get both the hatchback (and the Type R, finally) and the sedan or “saloon” as our European brethren call it. Over in the U.K., however, the only choice is the Civic Hatch, but that will change now as Honda plans to bring the saloon to U.K. dealers by August 2018.

PostHeaderIcon The Focus RS Heritage Edition is Here to Bid Farewell to the Current Generation

The current-generation Ford Focus RS has enjoyed an eventful life since it was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. But like all good things, the Focus RS’s time in the sun is about to end. Weep not, though, dear friends, because Ford is giving the hot hatch the proper swan song with the release of the Focus RS Heritage Edition. Limited to just 50 units, the Focus RS Heritage doesn’t dabble in the subtleties. It’s got enough goodies and equipment to make even hardened hot hatch fans tremble in excitement. And, if that little tease isn’t enough to persuade you, maybe the hatch’s bright orange exterior will do the trick.

“April 6, 2018. That’s the date the final MkIII Ford Focus RS will roll out of the production facility in Germany”

April 6, 2018. That’s the date the final MkIII Ford Focus RS will roll out of the production facility in Germany. When that day comes, we can officially say goodbye to the hoonigan hot hatch. Fortunately, we still have a little over a month before that date so we might as well celebrate the release of the Heritage Edition. We don’t know when the next-gen Focus RS will arrive, but you can bet it’s not going to be for another few years.

The Focus RS Heritage Edition is hard to miss. That’s usually what happens when a car — any car — comes with a Deep Orange paint finish. In addition to its attention-grabbing color, the RS Heritage Edition also features contrasting black door mirrors, a black rear spoiler, and grey brake calipers peaking from behind the black forged alloy wheels. Step inside the interior of the hot hatch, and you’ll be welcomed by part-leather Recaro seats, a heated steering wheel, and privacy glass for those moments where you want some, well, privacy. Stare up at the roof, and you’ll see a nice sunroof that’s also included in the package.

As splashy as these upgrades are, they’re not the headline acts of the Focus RS Heritage Edition. Those distinctions belong to the FPM Mountune power upgrade and the front mechanical Quaife limited-slip differential. The former is made up of a high-flow induction kit and uprated turbo re-circulating and calibration, helping the hot hatch’s 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine increase its output from 350 horsepower to a mouth-watering 375 ponies. Torque numbers also increased from 347 pound-feet to 377 pound-feet, enough to help the Focus RS Heritage Edition accelerate off the line an orange-clad speedster. Ford also focused on improving the hot hatch’s driving experience. That’s where the front mechanical Quaife limited-slip differential comes into the picture.

“The Ford Focus RS Heritage Edition is a fitting send-off special edition model for a hot hatch that has made many of us squeal in delight while driving it”

Overall, the Ford Focus RS Heritage Edition is a fitting send-off special edition model for a hot hatch that has made many of us squeal in delight while driving it. It seems unfair to think that the next installment of this fiery pocket rocket has no timetable yet, but that’s the nature of the beast. There have been rumors that the RS will make a comeback on the fourth-generation Focus, but we’re not going to get our hopes up this early. The potential for disappointment is there.

For now, let’s celebrate what the MkIII Ford Focus RS meant to all of us. It was the first hot hath to have its very own drift mode, and anybody who has ever gotten to try it out will attest to its pee-inducing capabilities. So if you’re ready to say goodbye to the current-generation Focus RS, there’s no better way to say adieu than to make a run at one of the 50 Focus RS Heritage models that Ford is rolling out. It doesn’t come cheap — price is at £39,895 ($56,000) — but that’s the price you have to pay for a chance to own a future collectible, even if it’s dressed up in a color that would make the sun turn its head around.

PostHeaderIcon Honda, Toyota, and Nissan Threaten to Leave the U.K. if Brexit Kills Profits

The uncertainty of the U.K.’s “Brexit” away from the European Union looms as one of the world’s biggest storylines since the shock vote that happened in 2016. There’s still a year away before the U.K. formally leaves the European bloc, but there are already concerns from other countries all over the world about the kind of trade agreements that will arise from the country’s departure from the EU. One of the concerned nations is Japan and, in an unusual move for the normally docile Japanese people, the country said that its companies would leave Britain if trade barriers made them unprofitable. Among the Japanese companies that could exit Britain include Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.

“The potential backlash of the U.K.’s Brexit is serious business”

The potential backlash of the U.K.’s Brexit is serious business. A lot of industries are going to get affected, and for a country like Japan that considers the U.K. its second most important destination for investment outside of the U.S., the uncertainty of its future trade laws could have adverse effects on the Asian giant. Japan’s ambassador to the U.K., Koji Tsuruoka, made that point clear in a conversation with reporters. “If there is no profitability of continuing operations in the UK – not Japanese only – then no private company can continue operations,” he said. “So it is as simple as that. This is all high-stakes that all of us, I think, need to keep in mind.”

High-stakes. That’s a good way to describe Japan’s position here. The country has spent more almost $60 billion in the U.K. on the shoulders of a business-friendly base with the country. But those investments came with the potential of profitability, something that’s now going to be thrown into limbo until the U.K. enacts new trade laws that are independent of the European Union.

Among the industries that will be most affected is the auto industry. Collectively, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan build almost half of the U.K.’s 1.67 million cars. If these companies leave the country because of restrictive and unreasonable trade laws, the ramifications are impossible to predict. Safe to say it’s going to be in the realm of a doomsday scenario for the U.K.

“A Brexit-type move is not unprecedented in the annals of history, but it is today given how important the EU is in stabilizing the world’s economy”

For now, everyone’s walking on eggshells. A Brexit-type move is not unprecedented in the annals of history, but it is today given how important the EU is in stabilizing the world’s economy. Any disruption to that will have an effect on the entire world. That fear and uncertainty is a big reason why major Japanese corporations have sought a two-year transition period, which they hope will ease Britain into its new relationship with the bloc.

It may be unfair to say that the responsibility to make Brexit work falls squarely on the U.K., but the country wanted this. Now that it’s on the precipice of exiting the EU, it needs to make sure that its trade relationships with the rest of the world don’t fall by the wayside as well.

PostHeaderIcon Chevrolet Sold One Car – One! – in the U.K. Last Month

Chevrolet did well for itself in January 2018 when it moved 141,947 units for the whole month. That represents an increase of five percent from its sales total in the same month a year before. Good stuff. Unfortunately, the Bowtie didn’t do as well in the U.K. For the entire month of January — that’s 31 days — Chevrolet sold a grand total of one unit across the pond. One. One!

2014 - 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray - image 526910
“Chevrolet ceased operations in the continent in 2016, leaving behind whatever stock it had left from the time it was selling rebadged Opels.”

I know what all of you are thinking. That can’t be right, right? Well, it is. Chevrolet did sell just one model in the U.K. for the whole month of January. It’s a staggering number considering how big of a company Chevy is. But there is an explanation, one that’s going to burst the bubble on this otherwise incredible story.

See, Chevrolet is not officially represented in the U.K. anymore. It ceased operations in the continent in 2016, leaving behind whatever stock it had left from the time it was selling rebadged Opels. There are some dealers that still have stock of these models so that’s probably where the one sold unit came from. Where it came from is another question entirely, the answer of which I don’t think I want to know to preserve the hilarity of this story.

And if you think about it, the paltry sales volume isn’t that bad when you consider how Chevy performed in the months earlier. According to CarSalesBase, Chevrolet’s sales in the U.K. in December 2017 was double the amount it sold in January 2018. Yes, Chevy sold two units in the last month of the year, one more than its volume in November when it also sold one unit. None of those numbers compare to its sales volume in October 2017, when it sold a staggering total of zero vehicles.

How the mighty have fallen. Then again, I guess the old saying also rings true in this instance. One is one better than none.

PostHeaderIcon London Poised To Enact New Ultra-Low Emissions Zone By 2021

In the ongoing effort to curb emissions amid growing concern over pollution and air quality, London is looking to enact expanded ultra-low emission zones (ULEZ) that will fine older-model vehicles to travel through the city. Some analysts estimate the move could force upwards of 1.6 million motorists into a more modern automobile, which is a huge shift in just three years’ time.

Continue reading for the full story.

The Full Story

“Classic cars built between the '80s and early 2000's will also see a significant impact, which means enthusiasts driving machines like the Mazda MX-5, BMW M3, and VW Golf GTI might not be able to afford the vehicle as a daily driver in London traffic.”

Anyone who’s been stuck in gridlock in a major urban area will agree – breathing fumes is no fun. And while the necessary actions required to clamp down on air pollution remain a matter of debate, those living in and traveling through London will need to adapt to a new set of rules slated to go into effect in 2021 that fine individuals driving in older-model vehicles.

“Urgent action is required to tackle London’s air quality crisis and reduce emissions from older more polluting cars,” said Alex Williams, Director of City Planning at Transport for London (TfD). “We are currently consulting on expanding the ULEZ, which would see a 71 percent reduction in schools in high pollution areas in 2021 – lowering the exposure of school children to harmful toxins that can reduce their lung development.”

The expanded ultra-low emissions zone would levy a 12-pound charge (roughly a little over $17 at current exchange rates) against car owners for each day they use their older-model vehicle, with the ultimate goal being the widespread adoption of newer, lower-emission vehicles.

The rule change could affect upwards of 1.6 million motorists according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders, as reported byAutocar. That number is far more than the roughly 500,000 motorists as estimated by the Transport for London.

Owners of EU5-designated (Euro 5) diesels, the same models associated with the Diesel Gate scandal, are likely to be among those most affected by the new rules. Classic cars built between the ’80s and early 2000’s will also see a significant impact, which means enthusiasts driving machines like the Mazda MX-5, BMW M3, and VW Golf GTI might not be able to afford the vehicle as a daily driver in London traffic. If used every day, they will likely incur an additional annual cost of 4,380 pounds ($6,248 at current exchange rates).

London Poised To Enact New Ultra-Low Emissions Zone By 2021 - image 765049
“Additional proposals are lining up for other major cities in the U.K., including Birmingham, Manchester, and Oxford.”

Older classics (those built before 1981) will be exempt, as it’s argued they contribute only a small amount to overall air-quality degradation due to their low usage numbers.

Those affected by the new regulations are encouraged to contact the consultation putting the plan together to help the new proposal take shape.

Additional proposals are lining up for other major cities in the U.K., including Birmingham, Manchester, and Oxford.

Without a doubt, these new regulations affect less wealthy individuals more prominently, as it’s far more likely that those at the lower end of the income scale are the ones driving an older-model vehicle. Not only that, but less wealthy individuals are less likely to be able to afford the extra daily charge in the proposal.

Of course, the fact that air pollution in centralized cities is getting out of hand is more than obvious, and a tax on high-emissions vehicles is probably the most direct way to address it.

What would your reaction be if similar proposals were laid for a city in the U.S., such as New York or San Francisco? Let us know in the comments.

PostHeaderIcon A 50-Year-Old Coal-Powered Steam Land Rover? Yup, There’s One Out There

If there’s anything the iconic Land Rover Defender proved in its 67-year run that concluded in 2016, it’s that it could be used in a variety of ways. Whether it was used as a military car, an off-roader, or even as an expedition car, there was no purpose the OG Defender couldn’t fulfill. Apparently, as one British man proved, it can also be turned into a fully functioning coal-powered steam car.

Meet Frank Rothwell. He’s a 67-year old retired British businessman man who happens the own one of the most unusual custom Land Rover Defender 88 models in the world. On the surface, we can still make out traces of its old identity. The body still has the Defender 88’s styling cues. but the recessed grille has been replaced by boiler front with a working chimney for the coal smoke. There’s even a Land Rover badge thrown in there for good measure, presumably to keep up with the appearances.

Rothwell said that he spent around £24,000 (about $34,000) on the project after buying the Land Rover for £4,000 (a little more than $5,600). From there, Rothwell spent more than 400 hours working on the conversion, most of which were used in fitting a coal-fired boiler that heats water into steam that is used to power the steam engine. The result speaks for itself.

The Defender 88, or whatever remains of it, now looks like something Jeremy Clarkson would build after one of his old late night benders.

Functionally, Rothwell claims that his Defender can top out at speeds of 15 mph with a full head of steam. It’s not much, but it’s enough for him to make his usual trips in and around town. More importantly, the car represents something of a love project for his grandchildren. “I think it’s really good for children of this era to do things like lighting fires and using coal,” he says, “because they have little access to using things like that these days.”

PostHeaderIcon TVR Gets Huge Investment From An Unlikely Source

The Welsh government has investing £500,000 ($690,000) to TVR, acquiring a three-percent stake in the British automaker. The government is also sending a £2 million loan to the company and purchased the Ebbw Vale production facility where TVR plan to produce its current and future models, including the recently launched Griffith sports coupé.

“The investment deal between TVR and the Welsh government isn’t actually a new development”

The investment deal between TVR and the Welsh government isn’t actually a new development. In fact, TVR boss confirmed to Autocar that the government’s investment actually happened back in March 2016. Predictably, politics played a role in the delayed announcement. The Welsh Conservative party (the opposition to Wales’ leading Labour party) was identified as being the cause of delay, primarily because it wanted assurances that public money would be protected in the deal with TVR.

With that wrinkle already sorted out, the deal is now being made public, opening the door for TVR to proceed with the development of the 500-horsepower Griffith at the Ebbw Vale factory that the government purchased for an undisclosed amount last month.

“With the investment, loan, and new facility in place, TVR plans to turn its attention to building the first pilot prototypes of the Griffith sports car”

While it’s not unusual for a national government to control stake in an automaker — the U.S. government actually owned a significant part of General Motors after the automaker filed bankruptcy in 2009 — it is, according to TVR boss Les Edgar, uncommon for the Welsh government to invest in a company that’s still trying to work its way back to relevancy. “In fact, I don’t think it’s ever happened before,” Edgar added. “I see it as a sign of their faith in TVR.”

With the investment, loan, and new facility in place, TVR plans to turn its attention to building the first pilot prototypes of the Griffith sports car. The company has said that production of the car is expected to start in the beginning of 2019.

That’s something we can look forward to now that TVR has the backing of the Welsh government.
Here’s to hoping that there are no hiccups along the way.

PostHeaderIcon Land Rover Goes Supernova; Takes 1,400 Cars With It

A parking garage in Liverpool, England turned into a huge firebox on Sunday night, engulfing a seven-story parking deck near the Liverpool International House Show. Authorities believe that the fire started in a Land Rover, which triggered a chain reaction that ended up roasting 1,400 cars in the process. Not exactly how you want to ring in 2018, right?

Video from the scene showed how huge the fire turned after it started. According to The Guardian, the fire got so big that firefighters couldn’t control the blaze quickly enough to save the cars that were trapped in the parking building. By the time they were able to access enough water to combat the fire, the parking building had already been engulfed in flames. Even with their resources, firefighters still took some time before they were able to successfully control the blaze.

Fortunately, and somewhat miraculously, nobody was seriously hurt from the fire, though there were reports of people abandoning their vehicles and running for their lives once after the fire broke out. Neighboring apartments were also evacuated, with scores of people finding temporary accommodation in a nearby leisure center. As it is, the parking garage has been described as “unstable,” even though it has not yet collapsed. Either way, firefighters remain on the scene.

It’s unclear if the owner of the Land Rover will face criminal charges, but local authorities have so far deemed the incident as an accident. Hopefully, that’s the case because it’s bad enough to lose your car to a fire at the start of the year, it’s worse if you find out that someone did it on purpose.

PostHeaderIcon Britain’s Dream Car for 2017 Is a Frankenvehicle with Lambo, BMW, and Alfa Romeo Cues

Dream cars, we’re talking about them on a regular basis. They’re usually exotic vehicles that we can’t afford, and we wish we will be able to buy them at some point. But dream cars isn’t always about Bugattis, McLarens, and Ferraris. A recent study conducted in Great Britain revealed that the country’s dream car for 2017 is a mess design-wise, combining features from vehicles that are radically different. More than 2,300 motorists were polled in this study on what makes their perfect car, with options ranging from badges and headlamps to doors and paints. And the result is essentially a Frankenstein of car features and designs launched over the last decade.

Britain's Dream Car for 2017 Is a Frankenvehicle with Lambo, BMW, and Alfa Romeo Cues - image 754154

Commissioned by webuyanycar.com, the survey reveals that drivers favor sporty car features but prefer the higher ride of an SUV. Specifically, most participants nominated the Lamborghini Urus as their body of choice. Far from surprising given that crossovers are highly popular now and considering that the Urus was unveiled only a couple of weeks ago. And it makes you better understand why Lamborghini wanted an SUV in the first place.

But things become really weird once we take a look at the other styling elements combined with the Urus body. The SUV combines an Alfa Romeo Giulia grille with BMW 6 Series headlamps up front, a Lamborghini Gallardo spoiler and Hyundai i30 exhaust around back, and Audi R8 doors with Honda Civic Type-R wheels wrapped in off-road tires onto the sides. The mash-up is rounded off by a Bentley badge and an electric blue color. Well, while none of the cars mentioned above are ugly, all these features combined into one vehicle make for a horrible concept. It’s so awful that it took “several weeks” to turn it into an accurate 3D rendering.

The company that commissioned the survey says it’s a bit surprised that people didn’t vote for two-seat configurations, convertibles, and high-performance supercars, opting for a high-riding body instead.

Britain's Dream Car for 2017 Is a Frankenvehicle with Lambo, BMW, and Alfa Romeo Cues - image 754156

Design aside, the study also revealed that drivers are willing to spend an additional £1,552, on average, on upgrades and add-ons, while more than a third said that heated seats are a must. Nearly half wanted a personalized registration plate. One in three drivers would want their car to handle any type of terrain, while an equal amount with their cars would have the ability to fly. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to see this FrankenUrus fly in front of my bedroom window.

PostHeaderIcon Introducing The Snoozeliner: The Bus You Want to Travel the Country In

Long-distance public commutes can be tricky, especially if you’re just off of a long day at work. You sit down, close your eyes, and before you know it, you’re dozing off, completely unaware of your surroundings. One stop turns to two, two turns to five, and when you wake up, you’re over ten stops past your own. This happens to a lot of commuters, which makes the idea of the Snoozeliner more appealing.

Introducing The Snoozeliner: The Bus You Want to Travel the Country In - image 753173
“The goal is to have these buses in operation on eight routes across four UK cities — London, Manchester, Leeds, and Birmingham — by August 2018.”

To the uninitiated, the Snoozeliner is the creation of Simba, a UK-based bed company that should not, under any circumstances, be confused with the lion cub and his Hakuna Matata-loving friends, Timon and Pumba. Simba (again, the bed company) has and idea to build a bus that has 14 sleeping pods in it to help carry tired and weary passengers and give them actual beds to sleep in their long commutes. The company’s even working with the UK-based Andersson-Wood architectural firm to help bring its vision to life. The goal is to have these buses in operation on eight routes across four UK cities — London, Manchester, Leeds, and Birmingham — by August 2018.

As ambitious as the timetable is, the idea is cool enough to get my attention. Should you decide to board the Snoozeliner, you will be welcomed by a ‘vertical forest’ of air-purifying plants. You will then be asked which stop you intend to disembark. Once that’s done, onboard attendants will lead you to your pods where you can enjoy a number of creature comforts, including a plush memory foam mattress from Simba, a pillow, a duvet, unlimited mineral water, and options to buy a host of other drinks on the menu, as well as “individual revitalizer kits, one of which is called liver-cleansing Milk Thistle. I don’t know what that is, and I have no plans of finding out. Each pod will also come with USB chargers, WiFi access, and a storage system for your shoes and valuables.

Introducing The Snoozeliner: The Bus You Want to Travel the Country In - image 753172
“Simba has yet to specify how much a trip on the Snoozeliner is going to cost, but it did estimate a starting price of £8.50.”

Attendants will notify you once you’re near your stop so you can disembark, presumably refreshed from your trip to dreamland. Simba has yet to specify how much a trip on the Snoozeliner is going to cost, but it did estimate a starting price of £8.50. That’s around $11.50 in our money.

If the idea still sounds like a pipe dream, let Simba CEO James Cox convince you that it isn’t. “We’re always looking at how we can use our technology to redefine an existing experience,” he said. “The Simba Snoozeliner service is all about helping people top up some valuable lost sleep time in a design that’s every bit as comfortable as their bed at home.”

PostHeaderIcon Mini Cooper 1499 GT

It’s a funny thing what a special edition car can do to polish an automaker’s shine. Nobody knows this better than Mini, which has created its fair share of special edition models, including one that it had just announced for the French market: the Mini Blackfriars Edition. Now, it’s doubling down on the SE goodness with yet another offering called the Mini 1499 GT.

In essence, the 1499 GT is not a special edition model that was concocted out of someone’s imagination, but rather, a tribute piece to one of the most iconic Minis to have hit the pavement: the 1971 1275 GT. Most of the functioning 1275 GTs have probably been lost in the sands of time and rust, but the 1499 GT is now here to breathe some life back to the legacy of the legendary hatchback. Between exterior features that pay homage to the classic Mini to suspension tweaks that ensure that it can perform as well as advertised, the new Mini 1499 GT is a stunning example of the best of what Mini can come up. The only downside is that only 1,499 units of the car will be made, and worse, all units will be sold exclusively in the UK market. It’s a bummer, sure, but don’t let dampen your spirits. It’s rare enough to see a special edition tribute car that properly pays homage to the car it’s supposed to be tipping its hats to. It’s even rarer to see one that takes the inspiration to a level that makes people actually reminisce about the classic. The 1499 GT does that, and then some.

What makes the Mini Cooper 1499 GT special?

“There’s a lot to like about the Mini Cooper 1499 GT, especially if you count yourselves as fans of the original 1275 GT”

There’s a lot to like about the Mini Cooper 1499 GT, especially if you count yourselves as fans of the original 1275 GT. I may not be old enough to remember the latter’s rise to fame, but I do remember riding in one when I was a little tot. It wasn’t the most luxurious car to begin with, and the interior space was literally unbearable even for a petulant child. But boy, oh boy, the old 1275 GT had character, something that a lot of today’s cars continue to lack. Not only that, but the 1275 GT also attracted plenty of attention, something I’m confident the 1499 GT will also have in droves.

The biggest and most important styling cues of the 1499 GT can be found in the exterior where customers are given a choice of getting the special edition hatchback with either a Pepper White finish or a Midnight Black paint. Here’s the catch though: depending on the color, the color of the distinctive graphics on the body will also change. Should customers opt for the Pepper White version of the 1499 GT, the graphics will be featured in pure black. On the other hand, a Midnight Black body will be treated to gold side stripes, the same exact stylistic feature that elevated the 1275 GT into one of the most famous cars Mini has ever produced. Don’t take my word for it; look at the photo. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

Outside of the choice in body color, the 1499 GT also received a slew of aesthetic and aerodynamic upgrades, most notably the inclusion of John Cooper Works front and rear bumpers, spoiler, side skirts, and even bespoke door entry plates. The special edition Cooper also benefits from getting tinted windows, clear indicator lenses, and a set of 17-inch black allow wheels.

Step inside the car and the upgrades to the interior are just as dramatic, maybe even more so than the exterior. Greeting you once you open the door are sports seats dressed up in leather and Dynamic. Just in front of the driver’s sports seat is another JCW transplant: a sports steering wheel with its own Chili Red stitching. There are also scattered Piano Black trimmings throughout the cabin, to go with carbon black details, an Anthracite headlining, and enough JCW badges to emphasize the contributions made by the German automaker’s performance division.

“Step inside the car and the upgrades to the interior are just as dramatic, maybe even more so than the exterior”

Suffice to say, the Mini Cooper 1499 GT hit all the right spots as far as paying homage to the 1275 GT is concerned. It even has the whole “affordable” spiel down pat, thanks in large part to the car carrying nothing more than a small-capacity Twin Power turbo three cylinder engine that produces a total of 102 horsepower. Powerful it is not, and the 1499 GT shows as much with an acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph of 10.1 seconds and a top speed that’s likely locked in at around 120 mph.

Designed to pay homage to the classic 1275 GT, the car will be limited to just 1,499 units in the UK market. The automaker says just like the car that inspired it, the new 1499 GT is affordable, offers unique styling features and an “entertaining drive.”

2017 Mini Cooper 1499 GT - image 737854

In other words, the Mini 1499 GT is an affordable Mini hatchback with a unique personality of its own. Don’t confuse it for a road-wrecker because it’s far from one. It does offer a good and hearty slice of Mini nostalgia, something that very few of its kind have been able to do. By that merit alone, the 1499 GT already stands out from other special edition Minis around, including the Blackfriars Edition.

What’s the deal with the Mini 1275 GT?

2017 Mini Cooper 1499 GT - image 737864

The Mini 1275 GT’s history dates all the way back to 1970 when then Mini owner British Leyland decided to bring Ford designer Roy Haynes into the fold. Haynes, as some of you may know, is the designer of the Ford Cortina Mk II, and his initial responsibility was to revamp the Mini lineup. Tapping into his experience with Ford, Haynes went and restyled the Cooper, giving it larger headlights, a revised bumper, a boxy snout with a fender-to-fender grille section, and was fitted with a set of 10-inch Rostyle alloy wheels. That design eventually came to be the Mini 1275 GT as we know it today.

The 1275 GT ended up being a unique car of its own, owing to the fact that it was offered with a 1.275-liter four-cylinder engine that used a four-synchro close-ratio four-speed manual transmission. More to that, the 1275 GT was also the first Mini in history to receive a tachometer, a pretty useful trivia for the next time you find yourselves talking to someone who claims he knows more about the automaker than he actually does. Soon enough, the 1275 GT laid the foundation for what would come to be known as the “People’s Car” in Britain, a status that not a lot of other cars have been able to replicate in the years since. The 1275 GT even proved successful enough that its production ran for nine years before it was replaced by the Austin Metro in 1980. In that time, a total of 110,673 1275 GTs were made.

2017 Mini Cooper 1499 GT - image 737863

Incidentally, one of those 1275 GTs actually went up for sale earlier this year in Los Angeles, California. According to Petrolicious, the model in question came with a Bronze Yellow exterior and a Black Vinyl interior. It also underwent significant restoration, owing to the fact that its owner actually found it “unloved on his brother’s work premises at Somerford Mini” back in 2004. The unidentified owner eventually bought the car and spent good money restoring it, even going so far as to get specialists from Somerford Mini to carry out the car’s complete restoration.

In the end, the car itself sold for $25,000, as good of a deal as you can find for a restored 1971 Mini 1275 GT that, at that time, only had 10,000 miles in it since it was rebuilt.

PostHeaderIcon Mercedes-Benz GLS Grand Edition

Mercedes-Benz has dropped a new special edition for the 2018 GLS, its three-row SUV. It’s called the Grand Edition, and it brings a swanky new leather treatment to the interior and the choice between two sets of 20-inch alloy wheels. The Grand Edition can be had on the GLS 350d, 400, and 500, but is only offered in Europe. Sorry, Cowboy. Though Joe America can’t have this beast parked in his driveway, more of his cattle will be found inside.

As mentioned, the interior’s new extended leather treatment involves a leather-covered dashboard with real, open-pore wood accents and seats with quilted patterns and a porcelain and espresso color combination only found in the Grand Edition. Outside, those getting the Grand Edition can choose to get the Exterior Package, which includes a slightly more aggressive lower front fascia and AMG-style 20-inch wheels. All Grand Editions come with badges on the front fenders denoting their grandeur.

What makes the GLS Grand Edition special

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS Grand Edition - image 736667
“Added comfort and exclusivity are often all it takes to push customers to upgrade.”

In reality, the Grand Edition isn’t all that different. Yes, there are “exclusive” wheels, new stitching patterns in the seats, and Nappa leather and wood on the dash, but that’s it. Then again, that’s all it takes to push customers to upgrade – added comfort and exclusivity.

While this isn’t Mercedes’ first time launching a Grand Edition SUV, there is speculation this might be the current GLS’ swan song. Spy shots have already surfaced of a large SUV draped in camouflage and wearing a three-pointed star. A new GLS would certainly be welcomed. Though its exterior aesthetics have aged rather well, the SUV’s interior – particularly its dashboard – is in serious need of an update. Just look at that center stack. It has telephone buttons like its 2003. An S-Class/E-Class treatment would definitely be a welcomed upgrade, digital dash and massive screens included.

“Mercedes is offering the special edition trim on the GLS’ three main trims – the 350d, 400, and 500, all with 4Matic AWD”

But back to the 2018 GLS Grand Edition.

Mercedes is offering the special edition trim on the GLS’ three main trims – the 350d, 400, and 500, all with 4Matic AWD. The GLS 350d 4Matic is powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel making 258 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. The GLS 400 4Matic is powered by a gasoline-drinking 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 333 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Topping the range is the GLS 500 4Matic motivated by a twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8 with 456 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. All versions come with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all horsepower specs are measured in PS, pursuant to European standards.

“Adding the upgraded interior package of the Grand Edition costs £5,950, and the exterior package adds another £2,300”

As for costs and availability of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS Grand Edition, Mercedes has already opened the ordering books and models will be arriving in European showrooms in March of 2018. Adding the upgraded interior package of the Grand Edition costs £5,950, and the exterior package adds another £2,300. That currently equates to $7,764 and $3,001 respectively.

What do you think? Are the interior and exterior upgrades worth the extra cost? Let us know in the comments below.

PostHeaderIcon Caterham Seven SuperSprint

In today’s world where power and technology have become more and more important among automakers, it’s nice to see a company go in the complete opposite direction with a special edition offering that not only has 95 horsepower at its disposal but also packs the technological equivalent of a soapbox racer. This is the Caterham Seven SuperSprint, a special edition version of the retro-static Seven that was created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the legendary Lotus Seven.

The lightweight, two-seater Seven SuperSprint is about as fitting a tribute as you can have for a car that itself defined itself by the same tenets. The old Lotus Seven was not the most technologically advanced car of its time and neither is the Seven SuperSprint. But that’s not why the Seven SuperSprint is being offered. It’s a callback to the days when 95 horsepower was more than enough to provide a fun, open-air drive, provided that the car itself is as light as a strand of hair. The Seven SuperSprint even looks the part of a 1950’s racer. It features period-specific styling that today’s Caterham still adopts. It even comes with a choice of six different paint finishes with stories of their own, a completely spartan interior that looks to have been frozen in time, and a small three-cylinder engine that has enough power to really make the limited edition retro racer shine in any era. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that shortly after the SevenSuperSprint made its debut at the Goodwood Revival last week, Caterham made all 60 units available to the public. And as quick as that happened, all 60 units, priced at £29,995 ($40,450) each, sold out in a matter of seven hours.

PostHeaderIcon Why The U.K.’s Ban on Petrol and Diesel Cars Won’t Save The Earth

As I’m sure many of you’ve heard, the U.K. wants to ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles by the year 2040. According to the British government, the proposed ban is supposed to lower air pollution and save the penguins or something. I’m sorry, but this is total nonsense. The fact of the matter is, switching from diesel and petrol-fueled vehicles will, at best, do nothing. It is true that electric cars are more efficient than petrol and diesel-fueled vehicles, and they produce fewer emissions post-production. But by switching from petrol and diesel cars to electric cars, you are relying more on the nation’s power grid.

The British government hasn’t released full year statistics regarding energy production and consumption since 2015, and as a result, these figures may or may not be totally accurate. These figures were taken from the 2016 press release of U.K. Energy Statistics for 2015 and Q4 2015 [1]. According to this document, the majority of energy produced in the U.K. comes from non-renewable resources. Natural gas seems to be the energy source of choice, accounting for the most electricity generated at 29.5 percent. Renewable energy sources account for 24.7 percent, nuclear for 20.8 percent, coal for 22.6 percent, and oil and other sources for 2.4 percent.

PostHeaderIcon Mazda Introduces Virtual Reality Test Drives At U.K. Dealers

Mazda is giving its U.K. customers a chance to wring some zoom zoom out of the new CX-5 on the Longcross test track in Surrey, no helmets required. Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen, right? Not when the experience happens via virtual reality.

“With virtual reality our aim is to create a sense of oneness with the car through an immersive experience,” says Kim Crawford, Mazda U.K. Marketing Communications Manager. “You literally get a test drive experience on a track, whilst sat inside the all-new Mazda CX-5 without leaving the building.” U.K. residents are encouraged to check out the new tech at four select Mazda shopping centers, including Bullring, Birmingham, August 5th and 6th, Trafford Centre, Manchester, August 12th and 13th, Bluewater, Kent, August 19th and 20th, and Braehead, Glasgow, September 2nd and 3rd. And while the 175-horsepower SUV isn’t exactly the Japanese automaker’s most adrenaline-inducing model on offer, the virtual experience should be a big step up from the normal test drive routine on public roads. Which begs the question – how will technology change the car buying experience in general? Read on for our take.
