PostHeaderIcon 2018 Honda Civic Type R Bags Another Record – This Time Silverstone

As part of the marketing campaign for the new 2018 Honda Civic Type R, the Japanese company has been around the world setting new lap records for FWD cars at remarkable circuits. The latest in the ‘Type R Challenge 2018’ series of stunts is a fastest FWD time at the Silverstone GP circuit.

This record was not an altogether exciting affair for a number of reasons. First of all, everybody knows that the 2018 Honda Civic Type R is a frighteningly fast FWD car. Then there is the fact that it snatched the record from the previous generation Type R. And third, the driver setting the record was no other than Matt Neal,  who is currently campaigning a Honda Civic Type R in the 2018 BTCC with Halfords Yuasa Racing.

But still, the feat was an impressive one. 2018 Honda Civic Type R went around the 5.89 km GP circuit at Silverstone in 2mins 31.32secs without breaking much sweat. The 2.0 liter VTEC offered all of its 320 PS and peak torque of 400Nm to Matt Neal who showed an impeccable performance in piloting the hot hatch around the technical track. Matt had this to say after the deed was done:

“Where I found the real advantage of the Type R was really in the high-speed corners – the stability which is a combination of the aero and the new advanced suspension system. Into corners like Copse and Stowe at the end of the Hangar straight, you can carry big entry speed with supreme confidence.”

Nissan GT-R Nismo-acc

In another one of their no holds barred tests of acceleration, the guys at Motorsport Magazine pointed a Nissan GT-R Nismo toward the end of a runway and floor it. What followed was a demonstration of Japanese engineering excellence as the car rocketed forward with such ferocity, the speedo needle could barely keep up.

This is a one-take demo of Nissan GT-R Nismo sprinting from o to 260 km/h using Launch Control:

Nissan GT-R Nismo Highlights:

Maserati Levante Action-0

It didn’t take long for the new Maserati Levante to hit the streets after its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and now we get the first video reviews of the car and the official pricing details. Looks like Maser is in a hurry to put this thing out and get on with their other projects.

That’s fair enough, seeing as how much time they wasted developing, redesigning and even renaming this product. What they have ended up with seems like an acceptable effort, at least on the surface. If it manages to trump the main rivals in the luxury SUV segment in at least a few of the categories that matter, then we will concede Maserati Levante is a class act.

Before we get to the information regarding the pricing of the Levante, let’s check it out in action. The commentary is Italian, but you don’t need words to understand the language of beauty:

As for the official MSRP, Maserati Levante starts at $72,000 for the 3.0-liter V6 model you see in this video which boasts 345 horsepower and comes as standard with dual-zone air con, infotainment with 8-inch display, premium audio and power tailgate. $83,000 will buy you the Levante S with a much more exciting 425 horsepower output and the ability to hit 100 km/h from 0 in 5.0 seconds flat. Please note that these prices are before tax and delivery, and do not include any of the optional packages and features.

PostHeaderIcon Rolls-Royce Dawn Road Test Review

Rolls-Royce Dawn-tested

On the face of it, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is a pointless car. If a big Roller with a huge engine and a quiet ride is what you want, what’s the problem with the Phantom Drophead? But when you get up close and personal with this exquisitely crafted machine that you start to realize why it is not only better than the Drophead, but could very well be the finest luxury drop-top in the history of cars.

Join AutoExpress’ News Editor Richard Ingram as he sails asphalt a light blue Rolls-Royce Dawn while discussing what makes this car tick:

Rolls-Royce Dawn is powered by a twin-turbo 6.6-litre V12 powertrain which is the same unit they use in the Ghost and the Wraith. Here it is tuned for extreme smoothness and quietness, and makes 563bhp and 80Nm or 575 lb ft of torque. The fabric soft-top on this car has a very quiet movement as well, so much so that it’s called a ‘Silent Ballet’. The roof opens electronically in 22 seconds and can be operated at cruising speeds of up to 50km/h.

Despite everything the Dawn has going for it, if we were in the market for a four-seater luxury droptop, we wouldn’t spend £265,000. We’d save a hundred grand and get a Bentley Continental GTC.

Range Rover Sport SVR-drag

In another one of their classic drag race/acceleration challenge/who’s got a bigger willy events, Top Gear Magazine lined up the sportiest of all the SUVs currently out there, the Range Rover Sport SVR, against the benchmark of this segment, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and the bulked-up-as-a-Navy-SEAL Jeep Cherokee SRT.

Check out the race before we discuss the results. It contains some delicious V8 noise:

So turns out Range Rover Sport SVR is not the fastest super SUV, or the best to drive, or the nicest sounding. But the British car here would still be out pick on account of the completeness of the package it offers. Sure the Cayenne Turbo is quicker and the pointless SRT might be a bit more fun to play with. But neither of those cars have the prestige of the Range Rover, and neither can match its off-road capabilities. But really, the SVR is better simply because it is much, much cooler than the other two.

Bugatti Chiron-new-0

After the debut of the all-new Bugatti Chiron at the Geneva Motor Show we got a tone of new renderings trying to imagine the open-top version of the car, but not that many good pictures of the car itself. Well, that issue is about to be rectified.

To be brutally honest, it was a bit hard to excited about the looks of the Bugatti Chiron, what with it looking exactly like the Vision Gran Turismo concept, which we’ve already seen plenty. But still, when Bugatti releases new photos of the car at their super prestigious factory in Château St. Jean, it is not something you would want to miss.

There is also new live photos of the car from the Geneva debut, but they are not reliable in giving you a good idea of what Bugatti Chiron really looks like. All those powerful lamps ought to affect your vision to some extent. Wo we guess the video above will have to do until we finally see one of these bad boys out on the street.

PostHeaderIcon Harry Metcalfe Reviews 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera S

2016 Porsche 911-Metcalfe

It is usually the range-topping, most expensive versions of the latest supercars that are featured in one of Harry Metcalfe’s brilliant review videos. But this time he’s gone for the base version, picking a 2016 Porsche 911 C2S (that’s Carrera 2 S) as the representative for new, turbocharged 991.2 range.

So here’s Harry’s verdict on the 2016 Porsche 911 in all its turbocharged-ness. It’s about the C2S, yes, but the principles apply to models higher up the ladder:

Of course, Carrera 2 S has always been the 911 of choice for those who know their Porsches on account of it being the purest car in the entire range. It’s not really the base model because of that S at the end of its name, but it can be considered basic compared to the Carrera 4 and Turbo and GT3 and the Turbo and the RS and the GTS and…

McLaren P1 GTR-corkscrew

Every petrolhead in the world worthy of the name is familiar with the fearsome Corkscrew corner of the famed Laguna Seca circuit. The unforgiving, difficult, and extremely exciting downhill corner nearly claimed a McLaren P1 GTR a couple of days ago as the car took it on too vigorously and failed to cope.

The near accident took place during a McLaren P1 GTR private track event at Laguna Seca, and the funny thing about it is that it wasn’t one of the rich, clueless clients making the mistake, but rather one of the professional instructors who was trying to set a lap time for the rich, clueless clients to try and match.

PostHeaderIcon Stephen Hawking Stars in First TV Spot for Jaguar F-Pace

Jaguar F-Pace-Hawking-ad-1

Jaguar kicks off their promotional campaign for the new Jaguar F-Pace SUV with a super cool television commercial starring renowned physicist – and massive TV fan – Professor Stephen Hawking. The new ad sort of continues the “British Villains” spots they made a while back, only this time it’s “British Intelligence” they are emphasizing upon, hence the addition of Professor Hawking to the cast.

The hugely expensive first commercial for the Jaguar F-Pace is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Tom Hooper:

“The all-new F-Pace is a Jaguar that customers around the world demanded that we make. The targets we set are among the most challenging we’ve ever had to deliver but I’m proud to say that the all-new F-Pace meets or exceeds every one of them. This is a performance crossover with outstanding dynamics yet also delivers a smooth, quiet ride. The F-Type-inspired design combines dramatic looks with a spacious interior and an exceptionally large luggage compartment. Together with our all-new infotainment system, our most advanced all-wheel drive system and an outstanding range of active safety technologies, the all-new F-Pace makes every journey a better, more rewarding experience.” Kevin Stride, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar F-Pace.

Evoque Convertible Tested-1

There is no doubt that the new Range Rover Evoque Convertible is a complete smoke show in terms of styling, at least with the roof down. But as it turns out, the car is less than glamorous in certain other aspects such as practicality and usability. The boys at AutoExpress have more in the video review after the jump.

Before you watch the video though, keep in mind that Range Rover Evoque Convertible is not really meant for braving snowy mountain roads or hauling a ton of gear across the Sahara. It’s a boutique car, a fashion statement. It is built predominantly for ogling and admiring. Still, it probably could have been better at being a car!

Available in two SE Dynamic and HSE Dynamic trim levels, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible boasts a four-seat interior, a fabric roof with tension-bow architecture and Z-fold mechanism which lowers in just 18 seconds and rises in 21 seconds, exclusive 20-inch rims, Roll-over Protection Device (RPD) system, InControl Touch Pro with a 10.2-inch capacitive touch-screen, and a 2.0-liter petrol engine with  240-hp and 251-lb-ft of torque with a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 112mph.

Petroleum companies are typically cynical, money-grabbing bastard corporation who have no problem destroying the environment for their own profit. They’re kind of like tobacco companies in that sense. And just like them, the promotional videos they make are utterly awesome! Check out “Joyride” clip here, made by Pennzoil, starring pro drifter Rhys Millen and a Ferrari 488 GTB.

Just as you want a cigarette after watching a tobacco company ad (not that they’re allowed to make ads anymore these days), you want to go out and drift around your car, whatever it is, and make pretend your’e Millen. It won’t make you as cool as Millen, in the same way that smoking doesn’t make you as cool as Don Draper.

PostHeaderIcon Lotus 3-Eleven Laps Hockenheimring Faster Than Hyper Cars

Lotus 3-Eleven Hockenheimring

You are probably familiar with Christian Gebhardt of Sport Auto magazine as we often feature his exploits here. The race car driver and road test editor has done pulled off something with the new Lotus 3-Eleven that has attracted the attention of the company, because even they didn’t except it.

What Gebhardt has done is lap the Hockenheimring short circuit in 1 minute 06.2 seconds. That puts Lotus 3-Eleven sports car above the likes of Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari 458, Corvette ZR1 and Gumpert Apollo in the rankings. Lotus also likes to boast that the car was on road tires and the weather was less than perfect, which makes the whole effort more impressive.

Jean-Marc Gales, CEO of Group Lotus plc said, “Christian set a fabulous lap in less than ideal conditions. We knew from the outset that we have created a simply phenomenal car that is capable of great things, and this lap record proves that beyond doubt. This is the ultimate embodiment of the Lotus design philosophy; it’s a beautifully engineered machine that doesn’t carry one ounce of excess weight. With 460hp on tap and race car handling at your disposal, this car is the ultimate giant killer”.

PostHeaderIcon Awesome New Promo for Porsche 911 R + New Interior Pics

Porsche 911 R-promo

More materials came in today on the brand-new and incredibly hot Porsche 911 R, focusing on the car’s back-to-basics philosophy and the kind of old-school fun that entails. Mind you, Porsche subtly hints that the R is far from an un-sophisticated, semi-stripped out racer by placing a satellite in the new promotional clip.

In this clip you see the Porsche 911 R drive in an exuberant manner on some empty desert roads. Does anybody else think NFS: Porsche Unleashed seeing this?

Along with the new promo video Porsche has also released new photos of the R’s interior which is yet another one of the car’s retro-inspired features. There is carbon full bucket seat with fabric centre panels in Pepita tartan design like the one in the 1960s 911 R, GT sport steering wheel, and a cool manual gear shifter. There is also a touch of modernity with the carbon trim pieces, but instead of an infotainment you get a big hole!

And in case you’ve already forgotten, Porsche 911 R is powered by a 500 horsepower flat-six engine and weighs just 1,370 kilograms.

PostHeaderIcon Sport Auto Gives Pagani Huayra BC a Good Workout

Sport Auto Pagani Huayra BC

Christian Gebhardt of Sport Auto magazine was among the first journalists who got to drive the new Pagani Huayra BC prior to its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Now that the car’s gone official, he can release the footage he’s filmed from his experience, delivering a good look at the BC inside and out, and giving us a taste of the car’s soundtrack and performance.

So here’s Pagani Huayra BC taking on some of the nicest mountain roads in Northern Italy in an exuberant manner. If God wants people to believe there is a heaven, he should make a promotional clip for it featuring this exact location and that exact car.

As I’m sure you know by know, Pagani Huayra BC is a limited edition, track-focused version of the Huayra hyper car designed and built in honor of Pagani’s friend, Benny Caiola. The main highlights of the car include a massive new aero kit, new wheels and tires, uprated brakes and suspension, new paint schemes with exclusive stripe designs, and most importantly, an upgraded, 750 horsepower V12 engine mated to a brand-new AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) designed mainly for lightness.

PostHeaderIcon Aston Martin Vulcan in Action at Yas Marina

vulcan-yas-marina

Recently Aston Martin held an exclusive event at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit for the handover of the first production units of the Aston Martin Vulcan track car. They also invited a few high-profile motoring journalists along to have a go in this speed machine and report back just how awesome it really is.

So yesterday we showed you a mean matte black Aston Martin Vulcan, now let’s check out a white one with Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage behind the wheel giving it the beans:

Aston Martin Vulcan detailed specs:

Chassis

  • Using the learning from One-77, we have designed and created an all-new tub. This incorporates a new rear scuttle and tunnel for the integrated roll-cage and a new rear ‘doghouse’ subframe to package the transmission, suspension and increased loading from the rear wing.
  • The use of Carbon Fibre for the whole chassis provides the perfect combination of a lightweight but incredibly stiff structure that provides a strong foundation with which to build Vulcan around it.
  • Produced by Multimatic, the raw tub weighs around 180 kg, and is produced over four days by a dedicated team of 9 people in Canada. It passes into the ‘autoclave’ oven three times.

Engine

  • Designed and developed in conjunction with Motorsport Partner, Aston Martin Racing, the unique engine is based around the architecture of the engine found in our GT3 race car, the naturally aspirated V12 has been enlarged to 7.0 and comprises a new block, pistons, liners, conrods, crank – all controlled by a Cosworth ECU.
  • The engine is located completely behind the front axle for better weight distribution and therefore dynamic performance.
  • The engine will feature 3-position adjustable power outputs which allows the driver to unleash true performance potential as their track skills develop.

Gearbox

  • Supplied by world-renowned motorsport transmission manufacturer Xtrac, the 6-speed transaxle sequential gearbox is controlled by steering wheel-mounted paddles (not fixed on steering column).
  • The 600E gearbox houses a straight-cut gearset with drop gears to the crown wheel and pinion and, at 200+ mph, is geared for a higher top speed than our GT race cars (depending on tyre and downforce set up).
  • Compared to a standard 600 gearbox the design for the Aston Martin Vulcan features a higher grade of steel for the gears as well as a unique set of gear ratios.
  • The gearbox weighs only 70 kg and features a lightweight aluminium casing.

Suspension

  • The front suspension is comprised of a Double wishbone arrangement with anti-dive geometry operated via a pushrod mechanism.
  • The rear suspension comprises Independent double wishbones with anti-squat and anti-lift geometry, again pushrod operated.
  • The front and rear anti-roll bars are also adjustable.
  • The dampers are of a 4-way adjustable design featuring Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) technology. These state-of-the-art valves enable both high and low speed bump and rebound to be adjusted independently on each individual damper.
    Blue = (B)ump, Red = (R)ebound
  • The rear dampers are horizontally opposed whereas the front dampers are mounted front to rear to enable weight save.

PostHeaderIcon Aston Martin DB11 Promo Will Melt Your Heart

Aston Martin DB11 Promo

So as the dust starts to gradually set on the Geneva Motor Show and all the amazing cars it brought us, it’s time to kick back and take a closer look at the most important debuts. And we begin with the Aston Martin DB11 – quite possibly the sexiest car to be launched this year – shown off in action in this first promotional video.

Aston Martin DB11 is one of those rare cars that just cannot be faulted in terms of design. We don’t know how they do it, but Aston designers seem to have a magical ability in creating flawless looks for the firm’s GT cars. We wish we could say the same about their four-door cars, but anyway, what they’ve achieved with the DB11 is nothing short of spectacular.

In case you have already forgotten, Aston Martin DB11 comes with a new 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine developing 600 horsepower, good for a top speed of 200mph and a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds. The car also boasts an 8-speed automatic ZF transmission together with the new electric power steering and Torque Vectoring by braking while increasing the firmness of the adaptive damping for a greater sense of agility. In plain English that means the DB11 is as good to drive as it is to look at.

The all-new and long-awaited Acura NSX has finally reached Jay Leno’s Garage for one of Jay’s famous once-over treatment which begins with a bit of history lesson, and continues with a discussion of the car’s features, culminating in a test drive around Burbank. This is sort of an infomercial, mind you, so they are not going to discuss the car’s drawbacks. And there are a few. We suggest you check out Motor Trend’s review if you want real consumer advice.

In this video Acura NSX head designer Michelle Christensen tells you the story of how the new super car came to be before Ted Klaus takes Jay out for a quick spin.

2017 Acura NSX launches in America this spring, priced at $156,000 for the base model and $205,700 for a fully loaded version. Both are powered by the same hybrid powertrain featuring a “Sport Hybrid Power Unit” consisting of a bespoke, mid-mounted twin-turbocharged, 75-degree 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine with dry sump lubrication, mated to an all-new 9-speed dual clutch transmission (9DCT) and Direct-Drive Motor. It delivers 500 hp and 550 Nm torque.
