PostHeaderIcon Volvo S60 & V60 Polestar Champion Edition

Volvo took a title win in the FIA World Touring Car Championship this year thanks to the efforts of Cyan Racing and its S60 Polestar TC1 racer. Leading the charge was driver Thed Bjork, who also managed to grab the Driver’s Championship, making him the first Swede to “win a motor racing world title” according to Volvo. In recognition of that, the brand is releasing upgraded iterations of the S60 sedan and V60 wagon dubbed the Polestar Performance World Champion Edition.

What Makes The Volvo S60 And V60 Polestar Champion Edition Special

“These machines come from Polestar, a dedicated tuner and performance company that specializes in making fast Volvos”

Volvo released updates for the S60 and V60 just a few years ago and recently announced the arrival of a third generation for the 2019 model year. That makes these hot-to-trot iterations well timed to take advantage of any renewed interest in the nameplates before the arrival of the all-new models sometime next year.

Luckily, these aren’t some poseur special editions with a little black trim in the cabin and an overinflated price tag. Rather, these machines come from Polestar, a dedicated tuner and performance company that specializes in making fast Volvos. Polestar announced it was becoming a dedicated electric performance car company last October, but before that happens, we’re getting these slick-and-quick four- and five-doors.

“Upgrades were added everywhere.”

Upgrades were added everywhere. Under the hood, Polestar optimization added newfound ponies and torque, with up to 10 extra horsepower and 50 Nm (38 pound-feet) of twist at the top of the heap. You’ll also get quicker shifts and a sharper throttle response. Hard bits include a free-flowing exhaust and sports air filter, while outside, there are new 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tires, plus fresh styling and aero thanks to a new rear spoiler and diffuser combo. Upping the handling chops are new dampers and springs. Inside, there’s a new Polestar shifter.

“The engineers from Polestar and Cyan Racing have worked collaboratively on engineering developments for existing Polestar road cars for many years,” says Christian Samson, Product and Development head at Polestar. “It’s therefore fitting that we celebrate the remarkable achievement of securing our maiden World Championship by adding more performance to the cars that have been instrumental this season.”

The S60 and V60 Polestar Performance World Champion Editions are offered on all D4, D5, T5, and T6 trim levels, and will head to all markets globally.

PostHeaderIcon 2018 Volvo S60 and V60 Get Carbon Fiber Enhancements From Polestar

Of the models in Volvo’s automotive lineup, the S60 and V60 are the two that have yet to adopt the Swedish automaker’s design language. Don’t worry though because that’s coming in the next few years. In the meantime, the two models are getting a nice treat for the 2018MY, all thanks to some new aerodynamic accessories provided by Polestar.

The kit itself covers plenty of real estate on both the S60 and V60 and was designed to help enhance the sedan and wagon’s performance and handling credentials. It covers upgrades on both the exterior and interior of the two models, with the exterior of each model promised to receive improvements in downforce by as much as 30 percent. There are no power upgrades, though, so don’t expect anything on that front. Still, there’s plenty of new bits and pieces to get excited about, especially for those who are looking into either the S60 or the V60 as their new automotive purchase. Best hurry though in making up your mind because Volvo is limiting production of the Polestar aerodynamic package to just 1,500 units. Should you decide to hold off until the next-generation models for both the S60 and V60 arrive, you’re going to have to wait at least another year for both cars to adopt Volvo’s current design looks. Either way, it’s not a bad idea to go in either direction.

PostHeaderIcon What’s The Best Upscale Performance Sedan You Can Get For Less Than $50K?

The sport sedan – talk about a hotly contested segment. Almost every major automaker out there has one, but as you might expect, not all are created equal. And that’s where we come in, armed with a boatload of facts and figures to help rank the various entries from best to worst. Of course, more attentive TopSpeed readers out there are sure to point out that this is a topic we’ve covered before, most recently in a comparison piece looking at the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Chrysler 300, Infiniti Q50, Jaguar XE, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. But unlike that last article, which focused on luxury cars with a sporty flavor, this piece will instead focus on cars that place a greater emphasis on performance, with luxury as a secondary priority. As such, we’re picking apart the Acura TLX, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Cadillac ATS, Subaru WRX STI, and Volvo S60. Sure, there’s overlap, but in this crowd, the effort is made more for grins behind the wheel than backside coddling.

That isn’t to say these cars aren’t comfortable – indeed, each offers a fair amount of upscale treatment, some more so than others. That said, we weighed performance much more heavily this time around, giving otherwise more spartan models a shot at the top of the list. So how do we place these five four-doors? Read on to find out.

PostHeaderIcon 2016 New York International Auto Show – Worst In Show

Meeting the high standards of a major international auto show is not easy. It takes creativity, an appropriately sized budget, and no small measure of polish. When it all comes together, the result is a beautiful thing to behold. A single model can shed light on an entire brand, sparking passion and lust in every corner of the automotive universe. We’ll cover those drool-makers in an upcoming Best In Show piece, but this article hits the other side of the spectrum – the monotonous, the poorly conceived, and the yawn-worthy.

This time around, our list of Worst In Show has a theme – special editions that aren’t that special. The 2016 New York International Auto Show was chock full of ‘em this year, so we collected some of the worst offenders for a little collective disdain.

Enjoy!

PostHeaderIcon Volvo S60 Edition

The Volvo S60 was designed as a replacement for the Volvo S70 and has seen just one generational change since its debut 16 years ago. That second generation came in 2010, with the new S60 taking styling advice from the Volvo ECC Concept and the Volvo S80. The look was fresh back then, but today it’s starting to look a little aged, and it’s about time Volvo steps up its game and ushers in a new Generation. So far, we haven’t heard anything about that, but for 2016 Volvo is releasing a special edition of its premium, midsize sedan.

Björn Annwall, the Senior Vice President of marketing, sales, and customer service for Volvo, said, “The S60 and V60 are drivers’ cars. Our focus with the Model Year 2017 Edition is to take this winning concept even further with a combination of fresh design features.”

So, what he’s basically saying is that instead of designing a new generational model for the six-year-old model, Volvo decided to offer up a special edition that features some options as standard equipment. Not that it is necessarily a bad thing, but after six years a fresher look would be nice. Some minor changes take place inside in out. Some new wheels and new body colors are available for the exterior and a few things to talk about on the inside.

So, with that said, let’s take a look at what we know about the Volvo S60 Edition and what will make it stand out in the lineup. For those of you interested in Volvo wagons, the five-door V60 Estate has also received the same treatment – you can read about that model here.

PostHeaderIcon Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 Race Car

It’s been 30 years since Volvo won the European Touring Car Championship with the 240 Turbo but the Swedish brand is celebrating by preparing a race car for the 2016 World Touring Car Championship. Based on the S60 sedan, the four-door was developed by Polestar, the company’s performance division, and will be campaigned in the WTCC by Cyan Racing.

Polestar’s official motorsport partner since 1996, Cyan Racing has six Swedish/Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) driver titles and seven team titles under its belt and will now take part in Polestar’s first multi-year program in a world championship.

Volvo’s previous factory effort in the WTCC dates back to 2011, when Polestar Racing completed a full season with a track-prepped version of the C30 hatch. The Swedes weren’t successful though, finishing last in the manufacturers’ championship, failing to score wins or podiums. Previously, Polestar raced an S60 in the Swedish event of the 2007 season, while Olsbergs Green Racing fielded C30s at Brands Hatch in 2008 and 2009.

”We have chosen the FIA WTCC as our global motorsport platform as it combines the cutting edge technology of our Volvo cars with exciting racing all over the world. The championship enables us to further develop our technology and utilize development from the racing circuits directly to our products for performance oriented Volvo customers,” said Niels Möller, COO of Polestar.

In 2016, Polestar will face competition from Citroen, Honda, Lada, and Chevrolet.

PostHeaderIcon Volvo Starts Building Its First American Factory

In May of this year, we brought you news that Swedish automaker Volvo had announced plans to build its first U.S. assembly plant. A recent press release officially announced that Volvo kept its word and has begun construction of its new facility in Berkeley County, South Carolina. A time schedule for completion has yet to be announced, but the Swedes still intend to roll their first U.S.-made vehicle off the assembly line by the final quarter of 2018.

The plant will first begin production of the redesigned, Volvo S60 sedan that Volvo has been busy developing in its home country. There will be a second model built at the plant as well, but Volvo has yet to release details on which model it has in mind. Initial staffing of the plant is expected to reach up to 2,000 employees, with a long-term goal of increasing to upward of 4,000. The American-built S60 will be exported globally to markets all over the world.

PostHeaderIcon Volvo S60 Cross Country

What the hell is that thing? Some sort of weird concept? Maybe Volvo’s sorry attempt to enter rally racing? Nope, that dear readers is the new Volvo S60 Cross Country. Yup, the AMC Eagle segment is reborn!!! All hail the jacked up, AWD sedan segment!

Having expanded the V60 range to include a Cross Country model in 2014, Volvo has now launched a similar package for the S60. Yes, that’s not a spelling error, the compact sedan now has a crossover version of its own, with all of the bits and pieces that made the V60 Cross Country one of the greatest wagon-based crossover, minus the massive storage area in the rear. Introduced at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show and scheduled to go on sale later in the year, the S60 Cross Country gives Volvo bragging rights as the only manufacturer to sell a crossover-like sedan. Sure, the S60 isn’t the first of its kind, but both the Legacy-based Subaru Outback Sedan and the AMC Eagle are long gone.

More importantly, Volvo’s perched sedan is the first such configuration to come in a luxury package and I can’t help wonder whether the S60 Cross Country will influence other compact sedans to don on a crossover suit in the near future. Meanwhile, Volvo’s “unique expression of adventure and all-road readiness” rides on its own globally as far as body styling goes. Read on for the full run-down.

Updated 05/21/2015: Volvo announced prices for the 2016 S60 Cross Country, which will go on sale later in the summer. The model will be priced from $43,500.

PostHeaderIcon Volvo S60 Inscription

Volvo has released a new range-topping S60 that adds in some new goodies. Is it worth the extra scratch? Check it out at TopSpeed.com.

Although Volvo is often referred to as the automaker producing the safest vehicles in the industry, the Swedish manufacturer is also known for the massive amount of luxury and technology it puts into its cars and SUVs. Sure, Volvo still lags behind German companies like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi in terms of sales, but the Chinese-owned brand’s lineup is as lush as it gets, with the brand-new 2016 XC90 paving a new path in terms of exuberance. While it may take a couple of years for the entire Volvo lineup to align to the trend set by the SUV, the Swedes are trying to keep up with the Germans by bringing more Inscription models into dealerships. At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Volvo unveiled the S60 Inscription, basically the range-topping version of its compact sedan.

Introduced in early 2014, the Inscription trim is essentially a package that adds several unique features inside and out, including soft leather upholstery, bespoke paints, new wheels, and custom interior amenities with embroidered logos. The S60 is the latest to receive the Inscription trim, which will arguably enable the sedan to fare better against similar competitors from Germany and the United States as well.

Updated 05/21/2015: Volvo announced prices for its entire 2016 model year lineup, including its new addition: the S60 Inscription. The model will be offered in two versions, with prices starting from $38,700.

PostHeaderIcon Volvo S60 – Driven

I’ve actually owned about 11 Volvos over the years, so I may be a little bit biased when it comes to the new S60. It’s not the bias you’d expect, however. As the proud owner of a veritable fleet of “brick-“era Volvo 240s and 740s, the marque’s gradual shift from plain and simple to svelte and luxurious has had a tendency to leave me behind, ideologically. The pragmatic old 240 is a much, much different animal from the new S60, which has high rollers like Audi and Infiniti in its sights.

If you’re expecting criticism of that direction from this Volvo diehard, you’re not going to get it. Change is good, and Volvo’s evolution has resulted in a handsome and unique addition to a rather crowded segment of the premium-car market. I spent a week with the 2015 Volvo S60 T6 and, traditionalist or not, we got along just fine.
